From The Editor...

The next issue of the Comm News has just hit your inbox hot off the virtual presses and here I am again hoping you all had productive and exciting weekends!  For my friends in the US, I hope you are having a good Memorial Day.

Speaking of the US, I'll be in Los Angeles between June 10 and June 13th attending a business seminar and I'm pretty excited about that.  It's good to get away from the city every once in a while.  Feel free to send me a message over the community.  I'd love to meet some of you guys personally over coffee if I have time!

Meantime, enjoy this next issue of the ALP Community Newsletter.

Cheers!

How Much is Too Much?

After having a look at the forums this morning just to catch up on some of the things I missed recently as well as look for more topics for this newsletter, I noticed a small issue brought up by a couple of members of Adlandpro.  Not thinking much of it, it seems that I may have underestimated the importance of this topic because there is an entire forum thread nearly 8 pages long with over 60 replies that developed almost overnight in response to it.

Even though I work for Adlandpro, I believe there is a time and a place for Advertising and that timing is key.  You simply don't take advantage of the opportunity that everyone is gathered at someone's uncle's funeral to unveil your new program or product.  You do however offer your assistance if you are a final arrangements consultant to a friend or family member in their time of need.  See the difference?

Though this was meant to be a funny example and most of you are saying "Yeah, right, like I would ever do that" the reality is that many of us are guilty of something very close; myself included (I pitch Adlandpro wherever I can in a signature).  How many of us have seen a serious discussion going on about a topic and then all of a sudden, someone says "Hey, check THIS out!  It worked for me." and then a signature longer than that the eastern seaboard riddled with links follows.  I bet there's a few red faces out there now.  Please don't misinterpret what I'm saying.  I'm not condemning anyone as even I am sometimes guilty of the same crime to a certain degree.

So the questions to be answered are like this: if advertising through posts, signatures, and invitations to join forums were to stop, be more closely regulated, or be reduced significantly, would you as an advertiser still see value in participating in our community?  How many of you would remain if you couldn't "show us your wares" so to speak?   Or should you have the right to post whatever you wish wherever you wish?  Do you believe the quality of the community would change if certain restrictions were imposed and how would it change?  Should there be a limit on the size of signatures?  These are all questions that beg to be answered and soon.  Let's hear your opinions on the matter and bring it right down to discussion in the open.  I'll post replies to this topic next issue.

Make Your Subscribers Beg You for Content via RSS
By Kent Thompson

Hold on to your seats ezine owners! Microsoft recently announced that they will be releasing a new browser version sometime this summer that could revolutionize the way your subscribers want their content delivered.

The new browser version was to be released with Longhorn, the code name for their next operating system to replace Windows XP. But Microsoft decided they needed to release it sooner than that.

Many think the reason is because Firefox, the popular new browser, has some key features that many surfers have come to expect. These features may have put pressure on Microsoft to respond with a browser with similar specs.

One of these key features is tabbed browsing, which allows you to browse to multiple sites using just one window with tabs rather than opening a new window for each page.

But tabbed browsing isn't all...

I am really excited about the possibility of a new feature that could change the way web-surfers get their content!

Although there has been no formal announcement about this, there has been a lot of speculation about the new browser including a built-in RSS aggregator.

An RSS what?

Let me explain...

RSS has taken off like a rocket. Blog sites love it, and every major website out there now supports it including CNN, ESPN, Yahoo, Google, and MSN.

RSS is nothing more than a format for delivering article headlines that can be read and neatly displayed by RSS readers, much like an email program displays email messages.

But so far the popularity of RSS has been confined mainly to blogsites and tech-saavy individuals who know how to "tune in" to an RSS Feed. Though it is spreading like wildfire, many average web users have no idea what RSS is! (I've confirmed that by recently asking several of my friends, and none of them had ever heard of it.)

This is all about to change!

Microsoft has very good reason to include an RSS reader with their new IE version. If they don't, surfers may have reason to switch to another browser that does. Firefox already includes an RSS reader.

If they DO include an RSS reader, think of the implications:

1) You could browse to a webpage and IE could "discover" any RSS links on the page and notify you of them through the browser status bar or elsewhere.

2) You may be able to Right-Click on an RSS Feed and have an option to "Add to RSS Reader", which would instantly subscribe you to the Feed.

3) Web developers may be able to write web pages that allow visitors to automatically subscribe to a feed by clicking a button or submitting a form.

Remember, Firefox already has all these features, but the vast majority still uses IE!

Once visitors learn how RSS works and figure out how easy and convenient it is, RSS could quickly become the expected format for ezines and newsletters.

Soon you may be forced to offer RSS content because subscribers will not want to hand out their email address anymore!

The time will come...will you be ready to deliver via RSS?

Editor's Note: Guys, RSS appears to be the wave of the future when it comes to delivering online content.  This is one of the reasons I'm really pushing this subject and getting you guys to promote your forums on sites which allow you to submit RSS Feeds (MSN, Yahoo! etc.) because every day, users sign up for new feeds.  I know that personally I have a local news feed and a weather feed on my RSS Reader here at the office.  And another great feature, because of the nature of RSS Feeds, you don't have to worry about spam complaints.  Just keep your RSS content engaging and the user will never delete your RSS Feed.  You can continue to promote your website, your expertise, your products or what have you.  Remember, you can promote your RSS link on your websites your signatures, herever.  Anywhere you see this icon Read this section in your RSS reader you can right click, copy shortcut, and get yourself an RSS link.

If you're having troubles, see the previous issue of the Newsletter for ideas on how you can promote your own RSS Feeds on Yahoo! and MSN.

2.1  Create-A-Quote Contest

"The Thing I Believe Most In Life Is That _________________ and The Reason For That Is _______________."

Sadly, after my pleas for more entries, there were only 2 for the Create A Quote this round.  C'mon guys.  I know you are all out there and can do way better than THAT!  Hopefully you guys aren't getting bored of this but if you are, let me know and I'll see what other fun stuff I can dream up.

For those of you who haven't played, the basic rules are copy the quote above and add your own input by filling in the blanks.  If you want more details on how to play, you can find the 4-1-1 on how to play by [ Clicking Here ].

Due to the lack of entries this round, I've decided to just introduce a new quote and see how that goes.  Good luck everyone!  I'm looking forward to reading those entries.

1.  Success Training with Unlimited WebWealth

Thomas Marguccio comes to the table this week with some serious positive information.  He takes a no-nonsense approach to providing info which will keep you focused on business and improving your life from the works of Leslie Fieger, the author of The DELFIN Knowledge System Trilogy: The Initiation, The Journey and The Quest plus many more success publications.  If you're looking for something to inspire you into action, look no further.

2.  Keep Your Teen Drivers Safe

Thanks to Melih Oztalay for submitting this forum to the Featured Forums section.  Normally, I don't like to provide links to product as advertising but this particular product serves a very noble purpose.  Using a combination of GPS, cellular, and internet technology, vehicles can be tracked, disabled, and locked to prevent road-related tragedy or in the event that tragedy should strike.  Perfect for parents of teens who drive, your spouse who may be on the road frequently, truck drivers, and more.  The applications are endless.  Take a look!

3.  The Classified Ad Clinic - Test Drive Your Ads!

And of course my own personal plug: The Classified Ad Clinic.  I've designed this thread to be more like an ad critiquing forum.  Post the ads you are considering placing anywhere on the internet and test drive them here.  We'll rate your ad copy in several areas such as:

1) Creativity - Rate how creative the ad is
2) Originality - Rate the ad's uniqueness
3) Clarity - Is the message getting across?
4) Value - Does this message convey value
5) Appeal - Are you drawn to read the ad?
6) Clickablity - How likely you are to click.

and then provide comments or suggestions for improvement.  In the end, you should have a good idea of how appealing overall this ad is and where you need to make some adjustments.

Please note: This is a non-confrontational, moderated forum and any irrelevant or rude posts will not be approved.
