Do you have any comments or suggestions you would like to make about the Newsletter? If so, feel free to contact me any time, and let me know what you have to say...positive or negative! Criticism is taken by me with no problem because that just lets me know where we need to improve.

PRAYER REQUESTS

We have a couple of Prayer Requests that need to go out this time around!

We would like to continue to send our prayers out to MS LISA WESTBERRY and her family. Lisa's little girl Elizabeth has a very rare form of cancer. The family is back home in Charlotte now, and Elizabeth had one treatment of radiation, but hasn't had any more since then due to her having a breathing problem. She is better with that problem now, and the family is just waiting on the hospital to let them know when they are going to start radiation back up. Elizabeth has to go to the clinic everyday though to have blood drawn because the doctors need to keep track of her blood levels.

Please keep praying for Elizabeth that she has a full recovery, and for Lisa, George and the rest of the family and friends as this is a very stressful and difficult time for all.

We would also like to send our thoughts and prayers out to Nick Sym. I heard that Nick was not feeling very well so please keep Nick in your thoughts and prayers.

We have one last Prayer Request...we would like to send our thoughts and prayers to Robert Coaster and his family. Robert's Mom just got out of the hospital and is doing better now. However his uncle fell and had to have surgery because he fractured his neck. Robert is a caregiver for 3 people, which in itself is very difficult and stressful, so we ask God to continue to give Robert the strength and health to continue on with this very selfless act. Robert you are AWESOME!!

If you know of someone that needs praying for please send us the information and we will add them to our prayer list in the next Newsletter. Thank you.

NOVEMBER HOLIDAYS & CELEBRATIONS

We have a very diverse Community here at AdlandPro, and I thought it would be nice to have a section on Holidays being celebrated around the world. I will list and explain the Holidays that will be celebrated during the month, along with the date the Holiday is celebrated. This should be lots of fun, and a great learning experience for everyone.

Veterans/Remembrance Day -
Remembrance Day (Australia, Canada, United Kingdom. In 1918, World War I ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The entire world celebrated. A truce was signed declaring the "war to end all wars" was finally over. The next year, on November 11th, the US called the day Armistice Day, in memory of all the men and women involved in WWI. Armistice Day eventually evolved into Veterans Day, after WWII, and is a day observed around the world to remember the people who were involved in various wars.

Remembrance Day is also known as Poppy Day (Malta, South Africa) or Armistice Day (France, New Zealand, and a number of other Commonwealth countries; and the original name of the day internationally.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) - November 1st
You might think that the Day of the Dead sounds like a creepy day all about death and people cloaked in black, but you'd be wrong. The Mexican holiday has been celebrated for thousands of years and continues to be one of the bigger festivals of the year. Dia de los Muertos translates to Day of the Dead and is a day to celebrate the lives of lost loved ones. It's also a celebration of the circle of life.

Guy Fawkes Day - November 5th
November 5th marks the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, a conspiracy led by English Catholic soldier Guy Fawkes, to attempt to blow up the English Parliament and King James I in 1605. Guy Fawkes and his followers were angry that the King was making it illegal for Catholics to practice their religion, so they were going to blow up the Parliament building with King James in it. However, a letter was sent to Lord Monteagle that warned him of the fatal plot and the bombing was stopped. Now, every year on November 5th, the averted crisis is celebrated with bonfires and fireworks. At the time, Guy Fawkes was executed for treason - if he had attempted the same attack today, we would have called him a terrorist.

Thanksgiving -
The very first American Thanksgiving took place in 1621 and was a celebration by the English pilgrims that had landed in Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts. It had been a long and trying trip over from England on their ship, the Mayflower, and the pilgrims wanted to celebrate their arrival in the New World with a giant feast. Today, Americans still celebrate the arrival of the pilgrims every year, on the fourth Thursday in November.

Diwali -
Diwali is a major Indian and Napelese Hindu holiday, and is a joyous celebration of lights. It is an occasion to rejoice in the victory of good over evil 'n of light over darkness within every human being. The festival is also celebrated by Buddhists of Nepal, particularly the Newar Buddhists.

********* THE POETRY CORNER *********

profile pic

In this issue of the Newsletter we are featuring another one of AdlandPro's poets, MR DON WHALEN. I am sure there are lots of people here in our Community that have no idea that Don is a writer of poetry...myself included. I am really glad to have found out though because he writes beautifully, and with so much passion.

I didn't do an Interview like I normally do with Don, especially after he sent me his latest poem. I read it and I was very moved by it, and at the same time I felt quite saddened. So, I wrote to Don and let him know what I thought about his newest poem, and I will share that conversation with you after you read his poem.

Don wrote to me, "Hi Marilyn, don't know what inspired this, sometimes, when the train comes, I just ride it."

DYSFUNCTIONAL
By Don J. Whalen

In my life, it's always been one thing or another
never had a daddy, but got a stoned cold mother.
I can never count on my twisted little sister,
and my brother don't know if he wants to be a miss or a mister.

The devil keeps whispering in my ear,
says he's the only one who loves me,
and he'll always be near.

I been stoned with my teacher,
and propositioned by my preacher,
it's no wonder I worry when I'm alone,
I'm never in a hurry to get back home.

I'm in need of an angel,
to help me make it through,
my spirits broken down,
and I'm getting really blue,
feels like I can't go on,
but I know I will continue to...
carry on.

Copyright ©2007 Don J Whalen

I want to thank Don for this very heartfelt poem, and as I said to him in an email, "Your poem really touched me and I can feel your pain and feelings in it. I feel sorry that your family is like that, but I know what you mean. I hope that you have been able to find family in other people like I have. Sometimes friends can be family to us more than our own family can. We can not choose who our family is, but we can choose who our friends are...Thank God! If I can ever be of any help to you, or just someone to talk to please feel free to contact me anytime."

Don wrote back and said, "Hi Marilyn, thanks for your kind words, and offer of friendship. I accept! You are right, friends can be family, and if you are lucky, family can be friends!"

If you are not friends with Don already please invite him to be your friend today. Thanks very much and God Bless You All!

Jokes

Misheard Christmas Lyrics

No one can fracture a Christmas carol better than a kid. Sing along with these new takes on old favorites:

- Olive, the other reindeer.

- Frosty the Snowman is a ferret elf, I say

- Sleep in heavenly peas

- In the meadow we can build a snowman, Then pretend that he is sparse and brown

- You'll go down in listerine

- Oh, what fun it is to ride with one horse, soap and hay

- Come, froggy faithful

- You'll tell Carol, "Be a skunk, I require"

- Good tidings we bring to you and your kid

A Nice Boy?

One night a teenage girl brought her new boyfriend home to meet her parents, and they were appalled by his appearance: leather jacket, motorcycle boots, tattoos and pierced nose.

Later, the parents pulled their daughter aside and confessed their concern. "Dear," said the mother diplomatically, "he doesn't seem very nice."

"Oh please, Mom," replied the daughter, "if he wasn't nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?"

YIKES!!!
