MAY HOLIDAYS & CELEBRATIONS

We have a very diverse Community here at AdlandPro, and I thought it would be nice to have a section on Holidays being celebrated around the world. I will list and explain the Holidays that will be celebrated during the month, along with the date the Holiday is celebrated. This should be lots of fun, and a great learning experience for everyone.

May Day - May 1st
May Day, the first of May is celebrated around the world. It has a number of meanings. In many other countries it is a celebration of spring and the coming of summer. It is celebrated with many spring flowers. To communist and socialist countries, it is a celebration for the workers.

In many countries it is celebrated as part of a one to three day holiday. Of particular note, it is not a national holiday in the United States, except in Hawaii where it is known as "Lei Day".

Cinco de Mayo Day - May 5th
On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Pueblo. This single military battle signified defeat of a European colonial power and a victory for the Mexican people. This single battle was the roots of Cinco de Mayo.

Mother's Day - May 11th
The second Sunday in May is always set aside for Mother's Day because there is no one better than your Mom. Father's are important, but mother's are just more special! She is the one that carries the new life for 9 months, feeds, bathes, clothes, cares for, protects, and loves her child always unconditionally.

Moms, well they are just the greatest. Often taken for granted, they are always our strongest supporter. You can never do wrong in Mom's eyes.

Armed Forces Day - May 17th
This is simply a day to salute all of the men and women in all branches of the service who protect our country and you. They can be called upon at a moment's notice to perform a risky and perilous mission for freedom and country.

Victoria Day - May 24th
Victoria Day is held in honor of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), to celebrate the birthday of the long reigning and popular queen of England. It is celebrated in England, Canada and other former British colonies and territories. Her 63 year reign of the huge global British Empire was the longest of all monarchs.

Memorial Day- May 26th
Memorial Day is traditionally celebrated on the last Monday during the month of May. Memorial Day is dedicated to service men and women who gave their lives for freedom and country. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have passed away. The roots of Memorial Day go back to 1865 and the end of the Civil War. Memorial Day was originally called "Decoration Day", but was changed in 1882 to Memorial Day.

Buddha's Birthday - May 20th
The Buddhist tradition is founded on and inspired by the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama. He was called the Buddha and lived in the 4th or 5th century B.C. in India. Buddhism is the main religion in many Asian countries. It is a religion about suffering and the need to get rid of it. A key concept of Buddhism is Nirvana, the most enlightened, and blissful state that one can achieve. A state without suffering.

********* THE POETRY CORNER *********

profile pic

In this issue of the Newsletter we are featuring another one of AdlandPro's poets, MS. BABETTE GUMAHAD. Babette is an awesome poet.

Q. How long have you been writing poetry, Babette?

A. I used to write as a child, but stopped when I went through teen-age "rebellion". Then I started writing again in my mid-late 20's, and then I stopped completely again. I recently started writing again, all the poems posted in my forum I wrote in July 2007.

What motivates your writings?

Well, Nov. 05 I began experiencing neurological symptoms. Jan. 06, I was diagnosed with having a brain lesion, then Feb. with a serious neurological illness. Procedures were again repeated in latter part of April 06 to re-confirm. Went through the whole roller coaster ride of emotions, denial, etc. I had to take medical leave from work Feb 5, 2006 and returned April 9, 2006. I found out that day that I had been demoted from being Executive Director to Sr. Director of Operations. It took a lot of courage to continue with the company. May 21, 2006, 911 was called...then I knew I was going to be placed on short-term disability and now long-term disability through my employer. My illness is my motivation. I find it as a release of internal and external emotional pain and anger

Does the writing just flow, or is it something you have to work at?

For some reason words suddenly appear in my vision. Once I start writing, all words used just fluidly flow in my vision, then onto the paper. I can describe it as if someone is dictating these words to me. It takes about 5-10 mins to finish a poem. This is considered as God's blessing, bringing back the creativity once hidden and lost.

'ANSWERS'
By Babette Gumahad

Punishing one's worth, with thoughts of only you
Coming to conclusion, addiction, is this true?
The path chosen, every moment, everyday
Pure obsession comes to mind for it is the only way
Overcoming ill feelings buried deep within the heart
Why is it, questions of emotions, questions of desire?

Trusting fate as one can only hope,
The addiction of obsession will soon fade away
Answers draw closer, fruition as they say
Believe within your soul, is the only way
Must unleash all feelings, must choose a different path.

Release the angst unbind the emotions,
For this will set you free at last
Parting from you is difficult to do
Sorrows within my being,
Forever lingering within the heart,
So please go, let it be just so.

Copyright ©2007 Babette Gumahad

I want to thank Babette for this great poem, and for letting us know a little bit more about herself. We would like to wish Babette much more continued success with writing her poetry, and with whatever else life has to offer her. Good Luck to you!

Jokes

Parking Fine

You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windshield that said "Parking Fine."

That was so nice.

*********************

Before our division was deployed, we had to repaint our Humvees from their normal "olive drab" to a "sand" color. The result was a pinkish hue ... and then the jokes began. One guy renamed us the Pink Panzer Division, but the best was the bumper sticker that said:

"Ask me about Mary Kay."

*********************

A New York boy was being led through the swamps of Louisiana by his cousin. "Is it true that an alligator won't attack you if you carry a flashlight?" The cousin smirked and replied, "Depends on how fast ya carry the flashlight."

********************

I was shopping with my roommate, and I saw a humorous button that said, "It might look like I'm doing nothing, but on a cellular level, I'm quite busy." I showed it to her, and her response was,

"Oh, I should buy that one, I'm always talking on mine."

THE 23rd ART EXHIBITION

I am thrilled and honored to be the writer of this edition of THE ART CORNER. These ladies work so hard always. These 3 ladies, ROSE ENDERUD, JENNY SJ, VENERINA CONTI, really out do themselves presenting this forum to us every 3 weeks.

I have the extreme privilege and honor to bring to all of you the artwork of our very own ROSE ENDERUD. Rose as you all know is the creator of this fantastic forum, and Rose, Jenny & Venerina have done an absolute marvelous job continuously with it!

Rose has been a member of AdlandPro since October of 2005, so she has been with us for quite a while and is well liked by all! She is very active in the Community, and she brings us 2 wonderful Art forums that are very enjoyable to read, and filled with alot of valuable information. All of us at AdlandPro appreciate all that she does for the Community, and for her love of artwork and presenting it to us.

Rose says she grew up around artists, her Mom did some artwork, at school they pushed the children to explore their artistic talents, and she watched many Artshows on Public television. Rose has a sister who is an accomplished artist, so I guess maybe it runs in the genes! Rose has no formal training she says, but her sister does help her out by giving her pointers from time to time, so I am sure that has helped her a great deal.

Please visit Rose's website at www.artisticrose.ws and you will be able to see alot of Rose's artwork there. Rose has some really beautiful paintings there! I hope that you all will enjoy reading more about Rose and her artwork on her forum, and here are a couple examples of her talent;

I hope you will enjoy this Art Exhibition as much as I did.
