JULY HOLIDAYS & CELEBRATIONS

We have a very diverse Community here at AdlandPro, and I thought it would be nice to have a section on Holidays being celebrated around the world. I will list and explain the Holidays that will be celebrated during the month, along with the date the Holiday is celebrated. This should be lots of fun, and a great learning experience for everyone.

Canada Day - July 1st
Canada Day celebrates the events that occurred on July 1, 1867, when the British North America Act created the Canadian federal government. The BNA Act proclaimed "one Dominion under the name of Canada," hence the original title of the holiday, "Dominion Day." Dominion Day was officially renamed "Canada Day" by an Act of Parliament on October 27, 1982. This change reflected the policy of successive governments to down play Canada's colonial origins

Independence Day - July 4th
On July 4, 1776, the United States claimed it's independence from England and Democracy was born. Each year on July 4th, also known as Independence Day, Americans celebrate their independence with picnics, barbecues, fireworks and family gatherings.

There are many other countries that will be celebrating their own "Independence Day" throughout the month of July. Just to name a couple of countries that will be celebrating this month, Colombia, Liberia, Rwanda, and Peru. We wish everyone a Happy Independence Day!

Tanabata - July 7th
July 7th is called Tanabata in Japan. It's a Japanese tradition wherein people write their wishes on tanzaku paper (colorful, small strips of paper) and hang them on bamboo branches. People also hang many kinds of paper decorations on bamboo branches and place them outside their houses.

Many cities and towns hold festivals and have Tanabata displays decorating the main streets. In some regions, people light lanterns and float them on the river, or float bamboo leaves on the river.

World Population Day - July 11th
For the past 13 years, countries around the world have been observing World Population Day on 11 July to raise public awareness and draw policy makers' attention to population issues such as poverty, reproductive health, education, and HIV/AIDS.

OBon - Starts July 13th

Obon is an annual Buddhist event for commemorating one's ancestors. It is believed that each year during obon, the ancestors' spirits return to this world in order to visit their relatives.

Traditionally, lanterns are hang in front of houses to guide the ancestors' spirits, obon dances (bon odori) are performed, graves are visited and food offerings are made at house altars and temples. At the end of Obon, floating lanterns are put into rivers, lakes and seas in order to guide the spirits back into their world. The customs followed vary strongly from region to region.

Jokes

Parking Fine

You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windshield that said "Parking Fine."

That was so nice.

*********************

Before our division was deployed, we had to repaint our Humvees from their normal "olive drab" to a "sand" color. The result was a pinkish hue ... and then the jokes began. One guy renamed us the Pink Panzer Division, but the best was the bumper sticker that said:

"Ask me about Mary Kay."

*********************

A New York boy was being led through the swamps of Louisiana by his cousin. "Is it true that an alligator won't attack you if you carry a flashlight?" The cousin smirked and replied, "Depends on how fast ya carry the flashlight."

********************

I was shopping with my roommate, and I saw a humorous button that said, "It might look like I'm doing nothing, but on a cellular level, I'm quite busy." I showed it to her, and her response was,

"Oh, I should buy that one, I'm always talking on mine."

THE 24th ART EXHIBITION

I am thrilled and honored to be the writer of this edition of THE ART CORNER. These ladies work so hard always. These 3 ladies, ROSE ENDERUD, JENNY SJ, VENERINA CONTI, really out do themselves presenting this forum to us every 3 weeks.

I have the extreme privilege and honor to bring to all of you the artwork of our very own Susanna Jade Angolani.

Susanna has been a member of Adlandpro since May 2007. She is a very nice person. You are going to love her artwork, I know I do! Please invite her to be your friend if she is not already.

Susanna says she has been drawing, coloring and painting ever since she was a child. It appears Susanna was born with an innate talent for Art! Susanna was fortunate to live enough to live in Italy and meet her mentor that taught her to paint murals and more. For the past 25 years though she has lived in California and New Mexico and has had her own home studio.

Please visit Susanna's website at www.susannajade.com/collection.html and you will be able to see alot more of her artwork there. Here are a couple examples of Susanna's talent;

I hope you enjoy this Art Exhibition as much as I did.
