Activity or Achievement?

I used to work as a Car Sales Associate in a very prominent dealership here in my hometown.  It was my first BIG sales position.  I was 21 at the time and very wet behind the ears.  Before I started I bought pens, paper, a leather bag, an organizer, suits, ties, the whole 9 yards.  I must have blown about 500 bucks on "career necessities" as I termed them at the time.

After being on the floor for a week or two I realized that sales weren't rolling in.  My sales manager told me to "Get Busy".  Which was manager speak for, "If you don't start selling SOMETHING, you're fired."  Fair enough.  Benchwarmers are not welcome on a professional sales team so I decided to "Get Busy" as instructed.

I went over to my phone and checked my messages.  I shuffled my index cards.  I pulled out a motivational card on selling and I read it...7 times, I went and talked to a couple of the other reps and asked how their sales were going, read some information on our product line and then WOW!  Wouldn't you know it?  It's 12:30.  Time to go grab some lunch. Come back after an hour and a half and walk around on the lot.  Say hi to a couple of people, made a couple of phone calls to a couple of walk-outs the week before and before I knew it it was time to go home.  Boy was I busy.

NOT!

I carried this attitude through the 3 month probationary period after which time my sales manager had no choice but to let me go.  I'm not ashamed to admit it.  I hadn't yet learned the hard lessons at that stage of the game.  Believe me, I do now.

People often believe that if you're moving, you're being productive.  This is simply not the case and one is not necessarily indicative of the other.  You don't have to be moving to be productive but by the same token, just because you're moving doesn't necessarily mean you're being productive.  Jeff Schuman, our guest article contributor this issue demonstrates this in full-color detail.  This may be an awakening for many of you...myself included.

Enjoy this week's edition of the Adland Digest!

The Most Remarkable Thing

Sometimes, the best lessons about success come from the oddest places.

In his book, A View from the Zoo, Gary Richmond describes how a newborn giraffe learns its first lesson.

[excerpt]
"The mother giraffe lowers her head long enough to take a quick look. Then she positions herself directly over her calf. She waits for about a minute, and then she does the most unreasonable thing. She swings her long, pendulous leg outward and kicks her baby, so that it is sent sprawling head over heels.

When it doesn't get up, the violent process is repeated over and over again. The struggle to rise is momentous. As the baby calf grows tired, the mother kicks it again to stimulate its efforts. Finally, the calf stands for the first time on its wobbly legs.

Then the mother giraffe does the most remarkable thing.

She kicks it off its feet again. Why? She wants it to remember how it got up. In the wild, baby giraffes must be able to get up as quickly as possible to stay with the herd, where there is safety. Lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild hunting dogs all enjoy young giraffes, and they'd get it too, if the mother didn't teach her calf to get up quickly and get with it."
[end excerpt]

Kind of redefines "helping," don't you think? What many people perceive as help is often really just a generous plate of sympathy with a side order of compassion and encouragement.

Sometimes true help involves a kick in the hindquarters or ripping off blinders so we can see. Tough love is as hard to give as it is to receive. A lot of people don't have what it takes to give it, or receive it, so they defer to platitudes.

The late Irving Stone spent a lifetime writing novelized biographies of men such as Michelangelo, Vincent van Gogh, Sigmund Freud, and Charles Darwin.

Stone was once asked if he had found a thread that runs through the lives of exceptional people. He said;

"They are beaten over the head, knocked down, vilified, and for years they get nowhere. But every time they're knocked down they stand up. You cannot destroy these people. And, at the end of their lives, they've accomplished some modest part of what they set out to do."

Success is not determined by staying on your feet, nor by how many times you get knocked down. The key - is getting back up.

Podcast and how a blog can help

When you create a podcast, it's not always for a mobile device. Some people download and listen to podcasts on their personal computers. So really, what's the difference between a normal podcast and a mobilcast? The difference isn't so much in the creation of the podcast, but rather how it is accessed by the user. Rather than surfing the web to locate a podcast, you're locating them on your phone using the Mobilcast application and then downloading them directly to your phone.

How does this effect the end user of episodes that you, as a podcast creator, publish?

I think it is a fair question to ask. People who find and download podcasts to their storage/listening device over their PC are (in general) doing so from a static location. But people who download mobilcasts are, by definition, mobile. This means they are using their device while they are "on the move" to get their podcasts. And because they are using their device while "on the move" it is fair to assume that they are looking for podcasts to supply them with something related to their situation.

So what do we know about their situation? On the average we can assume that they are:

* Not at home
* Not otherwise occupied
* Looking for information or entertainment

That's really about it. We can't necessarily assume that they're looking for entertainment right at the moment because it's possible that they're going to listen to the podcast later.

In this forum, we want to look at scenarios involving how people use mobilcast podcasts. We (meaning anyone who makes mobile podcasts) can then use this information to better target our audience by creating podcasts for them.

With your blog set up and you having created catagories for your subscribers you can now give your listeners/readers a choice to content.

You are able to not only create a podcast for each catagory but you are giving them current and archived information.

And you can state that the podcast was sponsored by "YOUR WEBSITE". Now you are branding yourself.

This can be done in text as well as audio/video.

Ok, everyone, a quick stats for you to see.

SOLD IN 2005 (worldwide)
16 million iPods
200 million PCs
750 million Cell Phones

With an estimated 70 - 80 million mobilcast capable phones in the U.S. alone by the end of this year, why wouldnt you want to expand your audience?

Now, find a blog service that can accomodate your needs and start reaching those audiences.

Don't Mistake Activity For Achievement
Copyright 2006 by Jeff Schuman

I remember watching an NBA Basketball Game on t.v one
night. The Miami Heat were playing the New Orleans Hornets.
Miami was all over them yet when you looked at the score
New Orleans kept pulling ahead.

Bill Walton made the comment "Don't mistake activity for
achievement." I'll always remember that. Just because Miami
was playing hard didn't mean they were playing smart.

This can apply to our everyday lives and more directly to
our internet marketing careers. As we all work hard to make
money online and make money at home you should ask yourself
this question everyday, "Is what I'm doing right now going
to help me make move my business forward?"

I am as guilty of this as anyone. I check my email over and
over clicking on the send/receive button looking for new
messages that say something like "Congratulations You Have
Made Another Sale."

It is so easy to constantly log into a program and check my
stats over and over. What's the point? If they do change it
isn't enough to even merit the time it takes to do it over
and over.

How about this one. Reading posts in forums until your eyes
are blurry. That's o.k if you are involved and making some
posts as well. You might as well get your link out there
and posting is a great way to learn something as well as do
that. But you have to post once in awhile too.

Here's the key to getting yourself past the activity mode
and into the achievement mode.

Write down 5 specific things you want to accomplish
everyday to help you make money on the internet. Here is an
example of this.

1. Make 5 new posts in forums
2. Trade links with 5 quality websites
3. Submit my article to 5 article websites
4. Place my ad in 5 free classified sites
5. Call 5 of my home business prospects

Now what is the key to these 5 things on my list? Well for
starters they are written down. Next it is an advertising
and marketing driven list.

If you aren't spending 80-90% of your time on advertising
and marketing your home business then you have no right to
complain when you aren't making any money. It is that
simple.

You have to write down action items for the day and the
majority of those action items have to be doing something
to advertise and market your business.

Every one of us has different amounts of time we can spend
everyday working to make money online. It isn't how much
time you spend, but how you spend it that will determine
your long term success.

"Don't Mistake Activity For Achievement."
