Editor's Comments

Barry Scott -Digest Editor

Thank you for the responses that I received regarding the last newsletter. I spoke of preparing for the upcoming Fall holidays and a few members have told me they have already started promoting Back to School ideas and some have told me they are ready to promote Halloween themes by the end of August! It is interesting to hear your ideas on promotions (some promos are earlier than expected) however you never know what works until you try. Please keep the responses coming and I will keep you informed of the thoughts that come my way.

As always and feedback or questions are always welcome, just click on my name below

Sincerely, Barry Scott Editor

Video Streaming and Television Programming

By Scott Lindsay

How popular has video streaming become? Well, unless you're last name is Van Winkle and you've been sleeping a really long time then you are aware of the rampant success of video sites like YouTube.

Coming late to the party, but arriving nonetheless is several network and cable channels. Early adopters of the technology associated with making full episodes of network programming available have seen incredibly positive consumer response.

The grievances of the writer's strike that ended in early 2008 centered on how writers might be compensated for their work when it hit the Internet - and it IS hitting the Internet.

With many computer systems offering both DVD playback as well as high definition capabilities consumers are downloading movies online as well as seeking out full episode playback.

Obviously the networks are very interested in having viewers check out their first run listing via cable or satellite, but they are quickly accepting the role of online immediacy in the consumers demand for instant playback.

One site that provides a fairly exhaustive list of online locations where you can find television programming content for play back is tvsquad.com, but a quick tour through your favorite search engine will bring dozens of results for online viewing. Many of these sources provide the video streaming at no cost to online viewers. What that means is that the content will be ad supported in most cases (they have to pay the bills).

What may be frustrating is if you try to skip ads you may find they simply start over again. In some cases you will also find a segment repeating if you try to advance to a different part of the program. In other words patience is a virtue in online viewing.

Viewers of online material keep up with soap operas, reality TV shows, classics and the latest dramas. News hounds can find hundreds of news clips they can watch as often as they want.

Some networks may have been dragged into the online world of video streaming in various stages of kicking and screaming, but for those who have been a part of this from early on there has been the sense that this method of enhanced user experience has created greater brand loyalty and incredible flexibility for the end user.

I have also noticed something significant in relation to video streaming. First, more and more individuals are placing embedded video from places like YouTube in their social media sites and second, many individuals are sending links to meaningful or important video content to friends and family members.

Slide shows are also being created online and are placed on websites for video streaming as well. These video segments can be used as a marketing tool for businesses that want to put a visual spin on their product line. I've even encountered a stream that can help air travelers learn how to pack their bags for the best flying experience.

The roll of video streaming has become an integral part of the online experience for most users. There will always be both information and entertainment that the web user will gravitate toward. When they just have to know they will search first online.
