Editor's Comments
Barry Scott -Digest
Editor
In the last Adland Digest (703)
I had written about the history of Advertising and the
mediums that lead the way through these times. I also asked
at the end of the article "What do you think? I did receive
a few responses and there was one in particular that I would
like to bring to your attention.
Larry asked "Could the Internet overtake TV
and Newspapers in a very short time because of its
popularity or at the very least do it much quicker than it
took Television to eventually beat out Newspapers?"
It is an interesting question, the Internet
is its own medium as there are certain businesses and
markets that would not survive without it, however there are
other mediums that use the internet as a marketing tool
(Television and Newspapers) and keep there mediums alive and
in some cases very healthy. As an example most cable
companies are broadcasting a digital signal through the
internet to homes, this is still considered TV revenue and
advertising but using the internet as the tool.
The internet is fairly young and still
experiencing growing pains and I have no doubts that one day
it will become the leader as newspaper and TV have, but I do
not anticipate it as being at any significant time period
that would be consider amazing compared to the speed of the
other mediums rise. However a sign that it has arrived is if
you should see an internet giant like Google or Yahoo bid
for the exclusive broadcast rights to a major sporting event
like a Super Bowl or World Series.
Of course any questions or feedback is
always welcome, send me an email to barry@softfornet.com or

How to Identify Niche Markets
By Ryan A Sullivan
As the article title suggests, here we will look at ways to identify and exploit niche markets. First of all let's take a brief look at why niche markets are important:
Exploitation of niche markets can work for both small home business, right through to large corporate. In the case of a small business, niche markets can provide the bulk of, if not all of your sales and can help to make you stand out from the search engine crowd. For example, let's say you sell t-shirts (like I do). If you have a product which is largely commercial, the chances are that other competing websites with more marketing power are also selling this item. This means that when somebody searches for this product, you are in direct competition with the big boys and unless you have gone mad on marketing and seo (search engine optimisation) for that particular product's page, then it is unlikely that you will come up near the top of the search results.
Now imagine that you have identified a niche product that either none, or very few of your competitors are selling. When somebody searches for this product (assuming that it is indexed with the search engines and you have done a reasonable job of seo and keyword placement) then you will come up somewhere very close to the top result in the search engines. Bingo you have a sale. Another added benefit of this is that if this product is unfindable elsewhere you will likely be able to charge a premium price for it.
Now let's take a look at how niche markets can benefit large business:
For large business, the exploitation of niche markets can perform several functions. First of all, it can grab traffic which otherwise would have been lost. But more importantly it lets your potential customers know that you are aware of the niche and that in turn makes you appear (a) more savvy, and (b) more exclusive. Again leverage can be gained on price as this is a rare product. Even more leverage can be gained from your trusted brand. EG, " I can get this product from bobby's bits at £13.99 or i can buy it from this highly trusted source for £ 16.99" Most internet users will buy from the trusted source as they feel it is worth paying the little extra for the security of the quality, delivery time and personal details security.

And now, How to identify Niche markets. First of all, in
my humble opinion, by far the most important tool for
finding niches is the keyword tool provided by Google
AdWords. To use this you will need to sign up for a Google
AdWords account (which is free). The main benefit of the
keyword tool is that it allows you to order your keyword
statistics by search volume and competition levels. Now its
simply a matter of searching for various keywords and
identifying which of them has a search volume which is
proportionately large when set against advertiser
competition. You can do this by clicking at the top of the
results to show first of all search volume, then by
advertiser competition.
Remember to dig further as there are usually niches
within niches.
The second way to identify niche markets is to simply
perform a Google or other search engine query and attempt to
asses the results, what you are looking for is a set of
results that contains a lot of reference to the subject but
a small amount or no actual products for sale.

The
Basics of PPC Publishing Explained
By Mark A. Abrahams
Pay-Per Click is one great advertising strategy that people earn great income from. This is because on the search engines and directories there are more than 350 million searches everyday necessitating close to 85% of the internet traffic. Some of the available PPC publishing agents include Google AdSense, Bidvertiser among others and it all calls for you to place them on your websites in order to get this substantial income that you have always wished for. PPC (pay per click) works in the sense that you make the specified payments to a particular host site when anyone happens to click on any of your ads. This should however not worry you because the charges are absolutely low and bids made for payments cannot be valued to the popularity you give your website and the number of followers you happen to recruit and retain.
This method has proven its impact with thousands of small businesses advancing greatly through the use of the same and succeeding online. The secret however lies on the modes of getting the maximum out of the specific PPC publishing.
One thing that you have to make sure of is that the main or carrier website is linked or has a similarity with your website and therefore people happening to click on the ad are pulled to their search even if it is not for your specific ad. If they happen to be different be sure that no one will click on your ad because their search will be completely different. Finally, bear in mind that it is all about keywords that people will gain interest on any ad, therefore make a point of structuring the best appealing headline for the sake of the website users' attention.
