Why Originality Sucks

By Scott Bywater
If you want to write great ads, which sell through the roof, you need to toss all your fears from school... about CHEATING... out the window.

Here's why:

Let's imagine you have a competitor who's doing something which is bringing in bucket loads of cash. Maybe it's a mechanic who's offering a complimentary loaner car... or a coffee shop offering a complimentary coffee to draw in the customers.

Many businesses would look at their competitors and think 'Aren't they clever. What idea can I come up with to generate loads of customers for my business?'

But the thing is...

There's absolutely no benefit in coming up with new ideas which are not tried and tested. Especially when you can take someone elses idea, make a few small changes and use it yourself - instead of trying out 20 'original ideas' that don't work.

After all, would you go and invent a new car, instead of just buying one that already works? Of course not!

So why not steal others idea... and get rich!

Of course, to avoid infringing on copywrite, you'll need to change the wording... and how you explain your product or service. But you can certainly take the concept and use it.

Now don't just look to your competitors. Get ideas from other industries as well.

Let's take a fish and chip shop as an example. What ideas could they steal and apply to their own business.

- KFC has 11 herbs and spices. What would happen if the fish shop created their own blend of batter which tasted sensational? And made their Unique Selling Proposition... the '7 secret herbs and spices which makes our fish taste so good.'

- Or what about packaging their product like McDonalds do into 'meal deals' to increase the average dollar sale. Or upsell by asking 'would you like fries with that?'

- And if their competitor is offering '2 for 1 chips' every Thursday night, and it's working, why not do the same?

- Don't just copy similar industries. What about the hairdressing salon down the road offering every 10th haircut for free. Why couldn't the fish shop offer $10 free fish and chips for every $100 you spend? If it works for a hairdresser, human nature says the concept will work for a fish shop, too?

- Or what about the mechanic who's advertising: "If we don't fix your car... you don't pay." Could you advertise, "If our fish and chips aren't the best you've ever tasted, let us know... and there's no charge."

Ideas are everywhere. So keep your eye out for the next one. In fact, every time you see a great ad or sales letter file it away.

About the Author:
In the early 1900s, advertising was simply regarded as a way of “keeping your name in front of the public” by most businesses. However John E. Kennedy changed all that when he stated that advertising was really “Salesmanship in Print.” (perhaps Ogilvy) And yet, of the thousands of copywriters out there, relatively few have real-world sales experience, combined with an entrepreneurial background in business. Scott Bywater shares both.

Do you want to learn the easiest way to get more customers fast? I have just completed my brand new guide "7 Ways to Get More Customers" where I outline everything so it's as easy as 1, 2... 3. Download it for free by visiting http://www.copywritingthatsells.com.au

Ten Important Parts to Your Advertising Copy

By MJ Schrader
A sales page has several important components. While you might try looking at other sales pages to know what those parts are, a good sale page makes them blur into something that draws you in without you noticing the parts. What follows are the parts and the standard order in which you will see them on an advertising copy.

1. What is your headline?

This needs to get your potential buyer intrigued and get them to continue to read. You want your buyer to think you are talking to them, you know exactly what they need. But not from your point of view, from theirs.

2. Did you say hello?

Hello, Dear Home Owner, Dear Dog Lover, Dear Future Pro-Golfer, these are all salutations that help your sales letter sound personal. While there are programs you can get that make the sales letter add their name they are prone to glitches and of course pranksters.

3. What is their problem?

Explain their problem to them. Let the buyer know you understand their problem and why it bothers them. The shedding dog may seem like the problem, but it is not. The problem is the fur all over the couch, fur in the air conditioner and finding fur on the jacket worn to a job interview.

4. What is your solution?

Now that your buyers know you understand explain your solution. Your special shed solution may reduce shedding but that was not the problem. Your special shed solution means a fur free couch, a clean air conditioner filter and a clean jacket at that job interview. Tell them the features. Write a few lists and mix those into your sales letter.

5. Prove it.

Provide testimonials. Use real people with real pictures, people know when they are fake. Provide stories, facts, figures, just prove it.

6 What does it cost?

First discuss the value of the product. Less shedding means not having to buy vacuums, it means not having as much trouble with the air conditioner. Those are expensive. Another value you could use is how your price compares to similar products. Then discuss your actual price.

7. What is your guarantee?

Offer a complete money back guarantee to your buyers for a specific time. Better yet offer a no questions asked guarantee. Yes, it may be scary but this helps your buyers have more confidence in you and your product.

8. What do you want them to do?

This may seem like the most obvious thing in the world, but you need to be specific. Tell them to buy your product. Tell them when you want them to buy it. Explain why later will mean more air conditioner problems due to fur.

9. Thank your buyers.

It is the polite thing to do after all.

10. Add a postscript.

Restate the urgency. Restate the major benefits and again encourage them to buy posthaste.

Adlandpro Tips

Some detail into Adlandpro's products and services for the new or experienced user.

Common Technical Questions

Why do I not get the contact information of visitors to my ads? I get an email telling me they visited but all it has is an IP address is there a way to get the contact information?

One way to think about this, what if you are surfing the internet, would you expect that every time you visit a site your contact information would be made available to the site you just visited? Of course not. Responses to your advertisement are email messages we send to you when a visitor to our site clicks on the heading of your ad.

When this happens, our visitor is redirected to your site. At the same time, a message is being sent to you (if you selected this option) to notify you that a user has visited your site. This option helps you to analyze the effectiveness of your advertising. Those messages act like simple hit counters for your ad when you have no other sophisticated tools to track your responses.

In some cases when the user who clicked on your ad is our registered Adland Pro user, your confirmation email will contain a link to contact this person. The most effective way to capture the visitors contact information is to offer a free catalog, e-document, e-zine or some form of free download that would be of interest to the visitor. You would need their email address to send them the freebie and you would also have the email for your follow up.

If you have any questions regarding email notifications or if we can help in anyway please contact us.
