Subject: Online Marketing Techniques and FFA links

Doug Williams wrote:

"WHO looks through an FFA page?
I only know of one person for sure, ME!  When did I pick up this habit?
When I was a NEWBIE!  NEWBIES love FFA and Classified sites, they love the
ease of use and all the great places to link to with one click."

MY RESPONSE:
Most "newbies" are just like the rest of us, they use WINDOWS.
And Since Windows only comes with one browser, IE, they use IE.
So when a newbie wants to find something, what do they do? They use the
search function in IE...which of course uses search engines.
A newbie has no ideal what a FFA page is to begin with, nonetheless where to
find them!
I repeat my former statement:
"FFA pages are nothing more than SPAM bait!"
Their only purpose is to gather the posters email address for the purpose of
sending them email.
I notice the person who posted that newbies use FFA pages has something to
gain by it.
Sad.
I have nothing to gain...my only purpose is to help people get REAL traffic.
FFA pages only hold a certain amount of links anyways, therefore YOUR link
isn't visible for long..unless you have a spare PC that will submit to them
on a 24/7 basis.

I would like to say that Adland has done a great job not becoming what the
normal classified site is: The same as FFA pages!
Good and True classifieds like AdLand ARE worth the effort!
Unfortunately, most classifieds are become "junk sites".

Still the best way to advertise is search engines, PERMEANT links on other
websites, and click-through banner ads. Impressions do not guarantee even ONE
visitor, while click-thoughs banners usually run until are the click throughs
are used up!

Pay attention to how many people are coming to your site, and from WHERE.
Consider changing your keywords to better fit your sites content if it seems
they are not coming for your content.
Lets say you have a "auto parts" website. Well, you may get visitors by using
keyword: software, but do you really want them????
I want people who are looking for my TYPE of products...not just visitors!
Is does no good to get 1 million visitors per day if NONE of them are buying
from you!
BE SMART!

If your banner is not getting the desired click-throughs, try another banner!
Maybe even try an AUDIO BANNER!

Spend your time promoting your site WISELY...take the time you would normally
use promoting to those useless FFA pages on creating GOOD meta tags that are
relevant to your content, and promote to search engines and the like instead.

Once again, a newbie has no ideal what an FFA page is to begin with, so
ignore the hype!
Most search engines are filtering out FFA pages, by the way!
SEE YA!

Subject: Online Marketing Techniques and FFA links

Hi All,

>From the postings in this issue my original article relating to different
marketing methods has sparked some interesting debate.  I would like
to make a few comments on the responses.

Doug Williams wrote;

Most of the negative drivel about FFA sites and Classified Sites 'not
working' is pure poppy-cock.  Grant you, some perform poorly, but as a rule,
failure of performance is often the individual person's lack of skill using
these tools.  These are sensitive and precision tools that must be used
properly. How your Headline reads, what is the offer, etc.
Offering something no one wants is a guaranteed way for no results.

In Doug's article there are some interesting and useful tips, but I take
exception to the above paragraph, I and other contributors to the
Digest are Newbies and look towards experienced marketers in these
groups for advice.  Intimating that we lack marketing skills is an insult,
I for one have operated my own business successfully offline for more than
twenty five years, I am however on a new platform and going through a learning
curve in a new environment.  What I related in my article was my experience
and analysis on the effectiveness of different marketing media.

Reading Doug's article he has an obvious bias as he is in the business of
promoting FFA media, Classified's and other marketing tools.  I wish to
clarify one thing people are linking FFA's and Classified sites as being the
same, they are not.  FFA's are one line lists in the main, whereas classifieds
provide a more visible platform to expand your promotion with a visible
description.

I use classifieds and receive some responses from them, it is the one line
FFA's that for me have a zero hit rate.  I think Fiona put it well when she
points to targeting the correct classified environments, blasting out to
1000 FFA's is hardly a targeted market, that is the reason I prefer to do
manual submissions it is more effective.

Pred* wrote;

I agree with what Bryan is sayin here, by themselves they may be of little
value, but if we put them together we increase their effectiveness.

Simply put, by earnin the click-thru credits, we get more people coming to
our site which in turn increases our more targeted banner impressions.

Yes, utilising click-thru traffic to get the impressions up is a means to an
end, but how many sites have you visited that try to get every banner on
the internet on one page which results in the visitor leaving before the page
is loaded.  Being selective in banner programs is important, you cannot
utilise them all without destroying the design and layout of your site.

I prefer to use other means of generating traffic as it took me a long
time to get my site design right, in order to get repeat visits from surfers.

Since submitting the last article I have received a few emails and have seen
comments in newsletters confirming Altavista are indeed planning a bid
submission system, will this mean a two-tier society on the internet. Those
that have the money being in division one and those that do not in division
two. Have any of you got any ideas on how to overcome what could develop
into a disadvantageous marketplace for the little guys.

I am a Newbie not an expert and appreciate the dialogue and tips in the
digest, what I write is on my experiences of the internet and not qualified
advice, YET!!!!. I am learning very fast through forums like this one.

Thanks Bogdan

Good Luck and good business

<Frank Said: Will the internet grow infinately large and ultimately

must be reducing so that at some point it will  burst. Will the FFA
links acquire an infinate lenght over a period of time?
As things stand at the moment the internet appears to have
a very high noise to signal ratio. It resembles an intergalactic
black hole ...>snip>

I really smiled (and i love to be made to smile on here) when I read
those words...It sounds as though Einstein is looking at this...and I
wish he were!

I believe I began the thread about FFA pages being useless space-
sucking garbage.  Perhaps because they are the Easiest way-
people think they are *doing something* to promote...alais, the
only purpose they can possibly serve AT ALL is if your auto
responder is set to 20 responses and the Headline is SO catchy it
promotes opening (and Then your copy better be SO interesting...)
well... you get the picture.

I have had some luck with classified ads and powersubmission
software however...I think the classified ad sites that are actually
Read are the ones associated with sites that people use alot or
belong to such as your main browser home sites and paid for sites
like the internet warriors.  I am not mentioning the Warriors as a
Plug...it simply comes to mind as I myself browse its classified's.

I have found that if *I* don't do it....most other people probably don't
either.  I have to look at my Own behaviors whilst surfing and
shopping to become *Joe Average*...and make note if what I do!
Don't over look this simple thing.  We can spend SO much time
online and not even remember...how many times have you gone
somewhere only to be asked How you got there and don't recall???
Well, make note of it!

I have not yet found a way to be top listed in the search engines
without *cheating* and altho it IS tempting(the 1 sec refresh)-I don't
do it.  My conscience won't let me and I do believe that if you are
earnest and honest you will make it...karma karma karma! Just
don't give up-keep learning Every day and have FUN at this.  If you
make money at the same time, that's bonus.  If Internet marketing
were not Fun, I wouldn't be doing it.

So that's my 10 cents for this one...I really like this digest too...it's
the only one that makes me feel it really IS a true forum in the
quest for marketing betterment and not hype and BS.

P.S. If anyone feels so inclined to look at one of my sites for a
review, that would be nice...just don't be Too hard on me...my
fragile nature will be irrepairably damaged! lol

Hi to all at Adland Digest.

I heartily agree with comments made by previous posters about your

PS: I read with interest your comments in Issue #100 about clearing out all
the double ups....I always only got one copy until you did your house
cleaning....now I get two!  You have to laugh :-)

Further to the discussion on spam....I was amazed to receive an e-mail
recently which read in part something like this:- "I have just been spammed,
and the sender was stupid enough to include your address in his message.  If
you wish to back me up in a complaint about this spammer, please send me a
short note of support.  In the meantime, as a gift for lending your support,
may I direct you to my ........spam, spam, spam, spam..." !!!

So now it seems, not only do the spammers pretend that you wrote to them
first, now they are pretending to be anti spam crusaders, whilst slipping a
spam offer in through the backdoor while you're busy commiserating about
these awful spammers!

Does anyone ever fall for this line of garbage?  I hope not.

Thanks once again for a great publication.

From: Betty Ann <BettyAnn@onlines.com>
Subject: Falsely Accused (Spam issue)

Hi Bogdan,

Just a couple of comments.

Like Harvey, I try not to send any email that could even remotely
be considered spam.  It would just cause too much trouble.  I get
my share, sometimes more than my share of spam.  I do not use
the delete key.  I have a special file where all the spam goes.  In
fact, I keep just about every piece of email that I ever receive.  I
prefer to be safe rather than sorry.

The spam issue is too controversial.  Everyone has different opinions
and some take it to heart and can feel personally attacked.  I have
felt that way in the past but had to toughen up and learn to live with
it if I was going to continue doing business on the Internet.

Harvey's sending an message to those that post a classified or link
on his site is not spam.  It is acceptable practice.  Some people
just like to be contrary and create a problem.  It seems that a lot of
people on the Net are very bold when it comes to email -- they don't
have to face a person or hear their voice.  Some don't even stop to
realize that there is a real flesh and blood human being reading the
nasty email they have just sent.  That is part of the territory if you
want to do business on the Internet.  You have to keep your wits
about you and toughen up to some of the things that may come into
your in-box.

Yes, Harvey, I too have noticed the new trend you mentioned.  A
person will request info from my autoresponder or from me directly
and then send their ad.  I usually send back a tasteful email that
commends them on finding such a sleazy way to spam and that
usually ends the correspondence with that particular individual.

The one other trend I have noticed that seems to be dying down a
bit (I hope and pray) is the spam that is sent with an autoresponder
as a reply address.  They never notice who they are sending to.
I can't tell you how many times one of my autoresponders has got
caught in a loop with one of these type of spammers.  In fact, so
many where coming from bigfoot.com and usa.net that my ISP said,
"Sorry, but I am shutting them down."  So now I can't receive email
from those domains.

I do believe it is a rotten shame that we all have to go to such lengths
to avoid spam and the problems it can cause.  And the spammers
are only hurting themselves - there are so many free ways to get
your message out to people without damaging your reputation.

Just my two cents.

Have A Great Day!!!  :-)
Betty Ann

Hi,
I wanted to let you know what a breath of fresh air your digest is.
It's nice to read something that I can actually learn something
from, not the same old "rehashed" articles that too many ezines run.

I would like to ask you or the group what type of Ezine ads work best.
Ads run in Ezines with a bigger circulation (>10,000) with about 10-15
ads or the smaller Ezines that have a much smaller circulation (<2,500)
and only 1or 2 ads per Ezine?
Thank you and keep up the fine work,

Lisa, you are mistaken, your site is a wide variety of LINKS for a variety of
products and services. Your crafts are nice, but they seem to not be the main
focus of the site since the link is not first and foremost as I think it should
be.
You have a nicely laid out site with much potential, use your main target, the
crafts, to get things going and lose the distraction links or risk losing your
visitors.

And now continuing from a previous Site Review that I did about 5 weeks ago, or
so.

Readers, please take a look at Aardvark Business Solutions now
http://homepages.tesco.net/~stevedoc/
I had blasted poor Steve pretty brutally when he had at first asked for a site
review here.
Sites that are nothing more than pages of unrelated money making opportunities
do NOT make money for anyone other than the ISP's that charge by the minute.
Steve has now redesigned his site to make it user friendly and informative. The
site now navigates with a purpose, and I believe that he has started on reaching
his goal of REALLY making money on the Internet, not just believing the words of
others, but in the proof that Aardvark now offers.
Those of you with a pipe full of dreams hoping for internet money from the sky
may just learn a thing or two.
Go and take a look.

Thanks Bogdan, I feel better already.

An effective 7 part marketing system
By
TIM FLEAGLE <fleagle@bright.net>

My Name is Tim Fleagle and I own The Eagles Nest. I market toys and
marketing tools online at my website. I have developed an effective 7 part
marketing system I think would be useful to new and experienced net-preneurs.
I developed my marketing system based on many months of online marketing trial and
error. The system consists of picking the right Product and target market;
creating your own website, a FFA automated Url listing site, an auction search
engine, free classifieds, and safe e-mail lists. All my advertising is paid
except for my free classified advertising. I have fond that I get much better
results with paid media.
Most ISPS will allow you to create a website with about 5 meg of storage space
witch ism plenty for a beginners website. You need to have some knowledge of
HTML format and some sort of web page software. Microsoft has Front Page and
Netscape has composer. You can find some marketing programs that offer web
creation software. I market a service that has that option.

There are definite advantages to have your own website. You can modify your Html
to include what is called meta tags. Meta tags are essentially imbedded search
terms at your website. Most search engines list your site based on its content
of search terms. Meta tags are hidden and not visible at the website. Your site
is rated, and as a resulted, listed based on the number of search terms that are
in the content of your site. It is very important to use all the tricks of the
trade to generate traffic. There are many website services on the net, of witch
some even generate meta tags for you.

Many advertisers prefer that you have your own website, and some search engines
will not list duplicated or affiliated sites. If you would like more information
any of the information, just send me an e-mail at fleagle@bright.net with "more
info sky net publication".

Purchasing a FFA service is essential to giving your business a traffic
generation jump start. The service I subscribe to sends 2000 e-mail messages to
prospective customers Spam free. When people list their URL at your site, an
automated message is sent back to their e-mail address. The message includes a
welcome and thank you for listing at your FFA site, An option to return to the
site and check on their listing, and a short advertisement of your other
businesses. You want to subscribe to a site that has the option to be a
reseller, because the site can pay for its self once you have sold a few
memberships. The service I use uses multilevel marketing and can pay for its
self after you have sold 5 memberships. The service I subscribe to also does all
the list management and consistently sends out 50,000 messages monthly. If you
only generate 1-% return traffic you will be getting 500 people to your website
monthly!

IF you want and instant 30% increase to your website than investing in an
auction search engine service is the answer. The service is the most expensive
that I use and also the most effective. I generate 100 + people to my various
business sites on a daily basis. The service will not list your business if it
is an affiliated site. An auction of search terms is the basis for this type of
advertisement. You specify a search term when listing you headline and URL. You
than bid a price on how much you want to pay. The highest bidder for that search
term is the first person on the page that comes up when a person hits the enter
button. After you put your bids in you can go to the management site and up or
lower your as you like. The key here is to have a product that you have already
sold or are relatively sure will sell. You will generate traffic immediately
using this service if you are in the top 5 when you bid. The top five listings
will show on the first page of results. After the first page, the percentage of
people accessing your site goes down considerably. I would recommend using this
service only after you have created your website and purchased your FFA site.
You will need some practice writing headlines and advertisements. You will be
able to get a feel for what is good ad within a few days of having your trial
ads sent out in your automated messages sent out with your FFA site.

The Last two advertising mediums I use are Safe lists and the old reliable
classified ad. And Safe lists. A safe list is a mailing list that people have
signed up for so they can send out information to list members advertising their
businesses. The only draw back is every one on the list will be sending you
information also. You can learn a lot from subscribing to these lists about
headlines and classified advertisements. These lists are an in-exspense way to
experiment with different styles of classified advertisements. When you find
send an ad to the list that generates some traffic you will want to save it and
use it when posting to free classified sites.

I market a marketing service that blasts classified advertisements to multiple
free sites from one ad posting. The benefit of doing this is time. If you can
see the timesavings if you are sending to 500 sites at one time.

In Summary, The key points of my plan are:

1 Find a product that is marketable and fits your style.
2 Create a website with meta tags
3 Purchase a FFA site.
4 Purchase safe e-mail lists
5 Sign on with an auction search engine.
6 Purchase safe e-mail lists
7 Purchase a marketing service that provides the capability to post multiple

classified advertisements at one posting.

I can recommend to you all the services above. If you are interested in any or
all of the information I have talked about e-mail me at fleagle@bright.net and
type "more info sky net publication" in the subject.

Joke provided by
Laurie Delk <delk@columbia.total-web.net>

A man placed some flowers on the grave of his dearly
departed mother and started back toward his car when his
attention was diverted to another man kneeling at a grave.

The man seemed to be praying with profound intensity and
kept repeating, "Why did you have to die?  Why did you have
to die?  Why did you have to die?  Why did you have to die?"

The first man approached him and said, "Sir, I don't wish
to interfere with your private grief, but this demonstration
of pain is more than I've ever seen before.  For whom do you
mourn so deeply?  A child?  A parent?"

The mourner took a moment to collect himself, then replied...
"My wife's first husband."
