From: Franklin Banker <altair2@ix.netcom.com>
Subject: Online Marketing Techniques and FFA links

Wow Bogdan,  this FFA subject sure brings out the strong opinions.  I am
certainly interested, as I use Free For Alls (FFAs) to market certain
services, products and affiliate programs, and I am not a Newbie to
Internet marketing.

Steve Angove said, "FFA pages are nothing more than SPAM bait!"
........
(somewhat true, but that's not the whole story).  Many newbies quickly
get into FFA sites by searching out sites, then finding the "FFA" link
on the site they have surfed to.  Then they bookmark the FFA site, and
use it for awhile.  If the newbie has developed a website, he/she will
post the urls on the FFA page, and will investigate some of the
interesting links found there. They will even link to someone else's FFA
page on their site, until they figure out how to get one of their own.

I frequently use Link-O-Matic to send urls to their FFA bank and when I
do, I (almost) always get results.  It's just one thing I do to generate
visits to pages I don't promote heavily on my site or in my e-zine.  I
get new 2nd level sign-ups for 2 tier programs, sell certain products,
and I occasionally sell a big ticket item for a good commission.  The
long and the short of it is that FFAs do work!  They are just  another
cog in the promotion wheel.

Steve, FFA blasting can produce results but everything depends on
timing, and the composition of the "TITLE" for the page.  If you are
creative you can grab a visitor or 2 as the link travels from the top to
the bottom of the category on a page.  Blasting the link into a system
of FFA pages during the early morning or the late evening seem to work
best.

My traffic comes from Search Engine listings mostly (60%) and from
reciprocals (40%), which includes a few FFAs, but admittedly not many.
By the way, Adland is one of my best referral sites, so I agree with
Steve's comments praising Bogdan's great site!  I think I am number 14
right now out of 2,200 or more.  Adland is part of my "REAL" traffic,
highly targeted for the entrepreneurial niche.

To sum up, I don't completely disagree with Steve's comments about FFAs,
just his implication that they are a spam paradise and not good for
anything else.  This is the Interactive Web, and every tool (except
spam) can be used by legitimate online business.  I want to say this
too:  The autoresponder e-mail from FFA sites if FAR LESS EFFECTIVE than
the autoresponder e-mail from Free Classified Ad Sites (food for
thought).  With that observation, I must clear out.  Thanks for the
oppotunity to "Blast" the group, and thanks to Steve Angove for
thoughtful provacation.

From: "Harvey Turner" <holton@iswt.com>
Subject: Online Marketing Techniques and FFA links

Hello All:

I am really enjoying the FFA thread.  As I've mentioned, I have had
no success with any submission service, free or other wise.  I am
still testing.  I've now had submitted a total of 8,000 to FFA pages
and still have not received a single response from them.  (New page
with no prior links or traffic.)

Hi Betty Ann:  Enjoyed your post.  I was caught in an Autoresponder
loop just once.  Had to disable my autoresponder to bring it to an
end.  I now use my regular email address for all autoresponders so
that when my autoresponder is send to another autoresponder - it
ends when that message reaches my inbox.  The delete key is
wonderful.

I have found, from personal experience, that Newbies do use and do
search for FFA pages.  I did!  Stumbled across one and then used
the search engines to look for others.  In the beginning they were
great.  I still believe that individual FFA pages, where an a surfer
must actually visit that page to make the post - will work.  It is just
difficult find those pages.

The main reason for this note is a new (to me) experience.  This
morning I received a spam letter - deleted it as usual and then I
began receiving a great number of complaints about the spam.
None of them addressed to me - but I was a part of the original
mailing so the complainers hit "reply to all" and "complained" to
the entire list.  That did it!  More & more began to hit the reply to
all and I've received hundreds of complaints and request to be
removed from the list.  They are not directed at me, but to the
originator . . . but the hit reply to all.  I wonder, since their signature
goes along with each complaint . . . . is this a new way to spam
without being accused of spam?

Any ideas?  Thanks for listening.

Subject: What type of Ezine ads work best?

Whether or not ezine ads work  depends on who your target
audience (and also the quality of your ad copy) is, whether the
circulation is 2500 or 25000. If you sell garden widgets you don't
want to to advertise in a sports ezine.

The really great thing about ezines is there are literally thousands of
them available on the internet and they cater to very specific
interest.  Whatever product or service you are marketing find the
ezine that best targets your audience and advertise there.

Another great thing about ezines is the ad rates are very
inexpensive in proportion to the audience you are trying to reach.  In
my opinion, and opinions are like noses everybody has one, you
can test your ads in targeted ezines with smaller circulations for a
lot less money. For example, my ezine the All Marketing Ezine has
a circulation of 2400 and a 6 line ad only cost $6.00.   So target
your audience and use ezines and you will get a good value for the
ad dollars you will spend.

Subject: What type of Ezine ads work best?

Hi Bogdan and Adlanders!

I just finished unsubscribing to several newsletters that
had exactly this situation!

>I would like to ask you or the group what type of Ezine ads work best.
>Ads run in Ezines with a bigger circulation (>10,000) with about 10-15
>ads or the smaller Ezines that have a much smaller circulation (<<2,500)
>and only 1or 2 ads per Ezine?

Randy, in my opinion, those ezines with (>10,000) who put
some re-hashed article that I already read on 3 or more
other ezines that day, and then fill up 3/4 of their space
with ads will not be keeping those subscribers for very
long!  I can understand the temptation to put ever more
ads into the ezine.. but let's face it - readers get glassy-
eyed when they have to read down through 30 ads!  I know "I"
do!  And I skip right past them all to see what other "good
stuff" there is in the ezine!  I certainly wouldn't pay
to have an ad in one of those!

I have only paid to place a few ads during my time on the
Net. Each time I kept a close watch on my visitor stats
to see if the ad was effective.  I found that those ads
that I placed in an ezine with a smaller subscriber base
(even as small as 150 subscribers) resulted in a lot more
visits to my site than those I placed in a larger ezine
amongst a million other ads.  Since it was the same ad in
both cases, I tend to think it simply got "lost" amongst
all the other ads.

One thing I did to promote my site that resulted in a HUGE
leap in visitors was to submit my URL to a site that was
directly related to my target market.  One of my hobby sites,
Wild Women of the Web at http://members.tripod.com/~queen_/woman.html
had been puddling along with 400 or so visitors a month for
several months.  When I submitted my URL to women.com, it
suddenly leaped up to nearly 2000 visitors and a lot of
them came from there!  I am still researching to find a
site like that to submit my business URL to.  *smile*
Just my $.02 worth on that  :)

Hi Bogdan and Fellow Adlanders,

I wanted to give everyone on this excellent digest a chance to win my
new "Name that Zine" Contest which ends June 29th.
In one of the mailing lists that I am active in, someone mentioned that
there is a negative connotation to "Opportunity" in my ezine called
"Opportunity Knocks Free-Zine" and that he feels that may be what is
hampering my subscription growth.

I decided to hold a contest for a new name on the topic of marketing and
promotion tips.  I write original articles for each issue and have had
positive response to my newsletter.  In fact, Bogdan had included one of
my articles "The Power of Personal Promotion" in an earlier Digest.

If any of you are feeling creative, feel free to send me your ideas for
new names and you could be eligible to win.  The winner will receive
a Press Release sent out to 5000+ reporters ($250 value), a Free Web Page
makeover by OCD3 Designs, a banner creat
ed by myself, as well as a permanent link on my ezine page.  All those
interested can check out the details at
<http://www.healthandmoneytips.com/namezine.html>.

Thanks Bogdan for providing this special digest and thanks in advance
to those who would like to participate in some free promotion.

From: Marianne E. Payton
Subject: SPAMMING

Today, May 30th, a day to remember our veterans and I received a beautiful
card via e-mail, as a lot of you probably did, with a nice salute to our veterans
submitted by, a Webmaster, I believe, honoring Memorial Day and what it
stands for.  Later on in the afternoon the internet went absolutely crazy and it
appears it was pointed at the person who created this nice memorial.  I received
so many e-mails that were not addressed to me, asking to be REMOVED FROM
MY LIST.  Being comparatively new on the Internet, I don't have a 'LIST' and,
of course, I answered a couple of these people.  Then it hit me that they were not
aiming at me.  In fact, it appeared they were "spamming the internet".   E-mail was
going everywhere and definitely not to the right person.  Finally, another Webmaster
sent out a notice to everyone - how, I don't know because I received one, but he
told everyone to sit tight and he would get it stopped.  And apparently he did.   I
really felt sorry for the guy and could tell who it was for because of the 'headers' on
the e-mails I received.  Why do people do this?  Anyone experience this today?

I also have a problem I do not know where to turn for help so maybe someone here
has the answer.  My first domain that I submitted was for the Merchant Accounts
which I handle and I am not quite sure how this came about, but my domain address
is re-directed to the Merchant's page.  I want to use this domain name for another website
but don't know who to go to to get this straightened out.  Anyone have any advice?   I
have read enough to know that people do not like the 're-directed addresses' and I would be
just as happy to use the regular address to the Merchant site.

Also, if anyone would have the time, I would love to have my site visited so I can see
where I need to tweek it up.  I have had a lot of compliments, but I would like to see just
what I can do to improve it.  It has grown to 3 pages and may grow even larger.   The main
theme was the Merchant Accounts and Credit Cards, but it has grown since that beginning.
I devote parts of the first and second page to Corey Rudl's Internet Marketing Center and
his reports.  I also have included many opportunities for those looking for a path to follow
in this vast cyberspace market.  My site, Marianne's Creations  http://mep224.com

Thank you for reading my first attempt, but I'm still learning and willing to learn more.

Subject: Altavista search engine

Live-learn, bang head on computer, and scream arrrrrrrgh at top of my lungs.
Now that my temper tantrum is over let me share what I discovered.  I
updated my web site at Altavista two days ago by adding my URL.  Today I
went in to look and see if it was changed.  No problem - it was changed. So
what's my problem?

Well I also discovered they do not take off the pages I have changed or
renamed so when you click on the URL, a 404 message pops up big as life.
Yikes, this means people who have tried to access my site
think I'm no longer there.  Not good, not good at all -- no wonder my
counter has been showing less people visiting my site.

Altavista indexes all your site's pages via their robot.  Apparently, you
must go in to their Add URL page and input those pages you want deleted
individually.  So there I was inputting 44 pages because Altavista calls up
the particular page and when it sees the 404 error message, it will delete
it from its index.

My point -- think carefully about changing your web site's file names like I
did.  Who knows what other search engines do the same.  A lesson learned the
hard way.

======================Site Review Response (1)===========================
From: Peter G. Browne <pgb@swdomains.com>

Hello Again Bogdan & Adland Readers,
Well here we are once again having a look see at some
websites for review. We have a total of four sites this
time around from the Adlands Digest #99. Well actually
three and you will see why as I progress.

Site 1) http://www.themaindomain.net

What we have here is a site that will submit your URL to
an abundance of locations on the net. They also list a huge
amount of affiliate programs that when you join one from
this website they will submit your site for free.

The website is appealing to look at, doesn't blind you
with colors that don't work. But thats about it.
As the owner of a website design and hosting company we
have come to understand how the search engines work and if
all you want to do is pump your out on the net then this
site can do that for you.

It has been my exerience that to properly submit a site
to the search engines you need to start from the basic
design stages and work your sunmission into the coding of
your pages.
If your meta tags don't work with the coding on your pages then
it doesn't mean bupkis if you submit your site to 75,000
loctions or one. It will not get proper indexing.

What could this site do to improve themselves in my opinion,
offer more of a hands on approach to search engine
submission. Anyone can use software to submit your site, but
if it aint coded right it aint going anywhere. If you look
at the meta tags for this site, the relavancy of the tags,
to the wording on the site will not get them a great
listing in the search engines.

So like I said if you just want to get your name out there
this is a good way to do it. If you want to get noticed in
the search engines start from the ground up and build your
site for the submission, everything must fall into place.
Its like a symphony, if everyone was playing from different
music it wouldn't sound all that great.

2.)http://www.myfreeoffice.com/aaainfosource//Affiliates.html

Now this site is why this is really only a review of three
sites When I got there the cupboard was bare, I received
the following "The page you are trying to access is
unavailable at this time."
Oh well, you gotta love the easy ones. :)

3.)http://members.aol.com/Globempo

The best thing I saw here was the splash page. This site is
very colorful and one of largest sites for affilite programs
I have been to in a while. It is like saying I don't know
what you want but I am sure that I have it here someplace.
If you are into searching through websites to see if you want
to buy something then this might be the place for you.
You will need to have a lot of time to kill, it will take a
while to get through everything.

One of the biggest problems here is the size of the mainpage
after the splash page, it is huge. I have heard it said that
if your site doen't load in 15 to 30 seconds you have lost
the visitor. If I wasn't going to have a look for the purpose
of a reveiw I would have been gone long before it finally
opened.

4.) http://www.momsnetwork.com/suites/countrysuite

What we have here is a mix of a personal homepage and the
beginnings of a website. I really think  there is a
difference between the two.
You will find a lot of information here for women. It sort
of made me feel like I was peeking where I shouldn't. There
wasn't anything that really let men know its okay, come on
in. Like when you go to the womans dress store and there in
the corner is two chairs and a small table. Their not there
for the women, its a courtesy for the men.
I really like the wealth of information that is available.
It makes for some good reading, but like I said there was
no real welcome for the males of this planet.

On a personal note I went to look at the cows and what did
I find? Although what I found was pleasing to the eyes I
really wanted to see the cows :) .<< attempt at humor >>
Don't want to let the "cow" out of the bag you will have to
go see for yourself if you want to know more.

So like I said what you will find at this website is a cross
between a personal homepage and the start of a website. With
time it will grow and include much more information.

No place for the men not even one picture of a big ol bucket
mouth bass. :)
================================================
I wish everyone the best with their individual endeavours on
the internet.

Sincerely,

Of Rhyme & Reason of Associate Programs
By  Linda Caroll

Little Jack Horner sat in a corner eating his marketing pie.
He stuck in his thumb and tossed me a crumb and said;
"Oh, what a smart boy am I!"

It was one of those nights. Wide awake. Tic toc, two o'clock.
My thoughts were on the people that requested website critiques.

Very often, the sites are a kalaidescope of someone's hopes
and dreams of Internet wealth all rolled up into a series
of associate programs, banners and associate id tags.

As I thought about the sites I'd visited, the ditty about
Jack Horner popped into my head. Silly?  Absolutely, but
have you ever found yourself reciting "30 days hath September"
or "i before e, except after c"? Funny how rhymes stick,
isn't it?  They help us remember things.

The next morning, Jack Horner was still kicking around, hawking;
"Sign up here. Do what I do. Sell my pies & get rich, too."

Okay, Jack, reality check. Let's look at numbers. Lets say,
hypothetically, that I make $7 for every $70 pie I sell.
I bust my tail promoting. I sell 10 pies. Jack makes a cool $630
from my work while I pocket $70. Works pretty good- for Jack.
Especially since hundreds of people sell his pies.

I DO think associate programs are GREAT, but most people don't
seem to make much profit selling them.  Know why?  Selling online
is different than offline. All grocery stores sell apples & oranges.
We choose where to shop by location or price.

If you're an online "store" selling an associate program, you're
in my home. So is every other reseller. Location is not important.
Price competition does not exist. So, why should I buy from you?

Have you ever bought a nice new pair of leather shoes, and had
the clerk ask you if you'd also like a bottle of leather-protect?
When you say 'sure', the store makes a couple of extra bucks.
Does that mean you can get rich pacing the streets in a trench
coat hawking 'leather-protect'?  Hardly. That's what a site filled
with nothing but associate programs comes across as. The guy
in the Internet trench coat. And it doesn't work. So, what does?
There are three ways to make a decent income online.

METHOD NUMBER ONE:
One way is to realize that associate programs are the
leather-protect. You need your own 'front-end' product.
If I sold website hosting, but not design, you can bet I
would sign up to make a commission for recommending designers.
And merchant accounts. And anything else my customers
are going to need to do business online. Back-end sales!

METHOD NUMBER TWO:
If you don't have a "front-end" product, you need to set yourself
apart from the crowd. To give people a reason to come to your
site- other than to buy a program that they can buy anywhere.

Do you like fishing? Build the best darn fishing site on the net.
A site where fellow fishermen can find anything they could ever
dream of about fishing. A site they want to bookmark and come
back to time & time again. As friendship and respect develops,
people are more likely to buy something you endorse. How many
times have you made a decision based on a friend's word?
"Hey, if Bob says it's good, that's good enough for me?"

As a note, be selective in what you recommend if you want to
keep the respect people develop in you. If you wouldn't
recommend something to your best friend, don't endorse it
to your customers in hopes of making a buck.

METHOD NUMBER THREE:
Then again, you could always be Jack. Bake your own pie.
Put together a package and offer people a percentage for selling
it.  Just do yourself a favor and make sure it's something of
value, and something people need. Otherwise, you'll be just
another flash in the pan in the Internet goldrush.

Pick one of those three methods.  Apply it to your website.  Get
some design help to be sure your site loads fast and is browser
compatable. Then, and ONLY then, promote the dickens out of it.
Once you do, no one will ever look at your site and tell you
that you don't know jack.  ;)

Best of luck,

unfolded the tiny fingers to check if the hand was all right, and guess what
