Greetings All

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I thought that this book could be a  good suggestion for Adland Digest readers
since teaches how to sell on the Internet.
I asked Allan Gardyne of http://www.AssociatePrograms.com to  describe it
in few words.
--------
Hi Bogdan
Thanks for your generous invitation to write about the book I advertised.
Much appreciated.
Actually, it's not my book. It was written by Ken Evoy, a truly
amazing guy. Among other achievements, he has taught medicine,
designed toys and games which earn millions of dollars in royalties,
and invented a "virtually impossible to sell" niche software product -
which he sells on the Net, earning $1,000 to $5,000 a day.
Now he has written a brilliant book describing how he sells what
ought to be virtually impossible to sell.
Ken loves teaching people, so his Net marketing book doesn't cost
$200. He's selling it for the amazingly low price of about $17 (US).
It gets even better. There's a two-tier affiliate program and the
book will be just one of a series of products aimed at
entrepreneurs and businessmen. Oh yes, and once you
get a customer, you earn lifetime commissions.
===============S u c c e s s    S t o r y ============================
From:Leen Borsboom
About two years ago I bought my first, and until now my only, computer.
A pentium II with 2 Giga's and 32 Mb Ram a Zip as extra memory and an
Epson 500 printer.
As many who start, I did not have an idea how to start and what to do.
Without any books or any teacher I started to work every day about 8
hours to get dominated my computer and the programs I had.
After one year I bought myself a Agfa Snap scan 310 Scanner because I
needed to use Images in my work. People started to ask me to develop
some advertise work, so I did but always I told them that I didn't had
any printing capacity. I send them to a professional printing company
with my 3 1/2 floppy disk with their advertisement in it.
The printing company paid me a 3% commission for each client I brought
to them.
But I couldn't make my own profit margin for the work I did.
quickly I learned that it is important to have the lines of distribution
in my own hand.
Meanwhile I was working to develop Internet pages. First I started with
a page for our Local Culture club "Extramuros" and soon I learned to
write in HTML.
Now I have developed my own Internet site where small business and small
companies can announce with a banner or a small page at first view. I
offer to make the banner or the site free If they sign a one year
contract. (90 Euros for a banner and 120 Euros for a small page)
Also I offer for those companies who don't have any internet connection
(very often in Spain) an E-Mail - Fax service, so I can connect their
banner or small page to my service E-Mail direction.
Four months ago a friend of my, who has a publicity company, told me
that he was looking for new products for local companies because "the
paperwork is what everybody does and little original".
Now four months later I am making publicity disks (floppy 3 1/2) which
those little companies can give to their clients and cheaper then any
paper-publicitywork.
Advantage: The paper publicity ended always in a garbage can, the floppy
not. They can use it, wipe-out the information if they want, for their
own computer. It is environment friendly which is very important here in
Europe, and they are giving a present to their clients.
If somebody doesn't has a computer they will be curious about the
content of the disk. They will look at somebody who has a computer. If
the find somebody, TWO people will see the announcement .
Meanwhile I bought myself a floppy disk copy machine.
Now, beside the Internet work, I am developing flopy-announcement in
cooperation with my friend from the publicity company.
He has got a new product to offer for his clients and I do have more
work without loosing the distribution line out of my hand.
With the same friend of my from the publicity company, we are looking at
the moment for a colour-laserprinter able to do for us printing work.
I will go on with my Internet pages and flopy-announcement but also I
will develop small paper announcement with a 25000 wide circulation or
bigger.
So we will be independed from any offset or printing company and
calculate our own profit margin about the work that we will do.
What started two years ago without any idea at all, is nowadays a small
computer announcement company.
I was unemployed at those days, but now I have enough work to contract
my first employee.
I learned to look around and to take those things which aren't far away
but needed. My computer as my company and my imagination as my limit.
Perhaps this is one of those little succes-stories which happen to
people. But when I came five years ago to live here in Spain (I am dutch
but moved to Spain because my wife is Spanish) I had a lot to do.
I didn't had work, I didn't spoke any spanish at all, I left my friends
and my family behind me in Holland.
But I had made myself a deadline: In five years I like to speak good
spanish and to have my own company.
Now five years later and after hard work I will go on with my newborn
company which name is "Cartel de Castilla". Translated "Castle Banner"
and which can be founded for those people who are interested on
http://www.angelfire.com/biz/NEBECO.
With a friendly greet
Leen Borsboom.
Spain.
>My point -- think carefully about changing your web site's file names like
=========================================================================
Further to this point - frames! The "old" version of my site consisted of
three frame areas, one of which stayed constant, but the other two changed
as people clicked a forward / reverse button (to change two areas at a time,
in reality the link downloads a new frameset each time). With 21 pages,
that`s 21 framesets, 21 mainpages and 21 lower pages, plus the area that
stays the same - a total of 64 pages.
Now AltaVista`s spider indexed all these pages, together with the links
within each page! So when I switched to a single non-frame page, I suddenly
realised people would be clicking these links, and downloading an odd
looking page - ie just a section of an old frame page.
The simple solution; I kept the names the same, but changed the content of
each page to a refresh page, together with "THIS PAGE HAS BEEN REMOVED. YOU
WILL BE REDIRECTED TO OUR NEW PAGE" and uploaded all 64 pages again!! So if
someone clicks on the named link of what was once part of a frame page, they
will still end up at the new non-framed version.
Subject: Getting seen
Hi to everyone reading Adlands Digest
Penny Richardson was asking about how to get her website seen. I have been
stumbling around since September 98 with my site and slowly building my
sites visitors.
The things which are working best for me are reciprocal links, whereby you
put someone elses link on your site and they in return put yours on their
site. Over 50% of my traffic comes from links on other sites, and the rest
comes from searches and reloads. I offer a free email account on my main
page (anyone can do the same by visiting www.zzn.com and signing up for
free) and many visitors are returning to collect their email.
Some of the sites I trade links with, lead 10's of visitors a day to my
site, it doesn't sound much on its own but with 10 sites linking to you, or
even hundreds it soon mounts up.
I use a free tracking program to see what is working so that I can spend
more time doing that and not waste time with the rest.
I hope this helps.
P.S. If anyone wants a reciprocal link then send me details and we will work
it out.
Thanks for your time.
Subject: This is my first business venture on the net and ...
I want to say, "I love Adland digest:"  It's the only e-zine I read
thoroughly.
I have started a business on-line, it's called 'Reprints Galore CD-ROM'.
It's at:
http://www.hotyellow98.com/reprintsgalore/
I have set it up to accept credit cards, checks on-line, checks by fax,
phoned in
orders and of course via mail.  By the way, I found this great service
to do all that
from reading Aland's Digest.  Now, THE BIG QUESTION!
Hotyellow has informed me that the Search Engines will not except URLs
if they
don't have a Domain Name. Is this true?
Another question:  Gateway or doorway pages.  I've read that gateway
pages are more apt to get listed with the SEs.  Just what do you put on
a gateway page?  Do you put your keywords, description tags on it just
like you do your main page?  Any suggestions
would be appreciated.  This is my first business venture on the net and
would like any
advice on how to promote it.  Thanks!
PS. would like for you to review my site too!
Note from Editor.
I receive after each Digest issue few messages like yours but
don't usually include them here but rather respond directly.
After looking at your message to this discussion list I have couple
of suggestions for you  to get better exposure and benefit from the fact that
you posted your message to discussion list of over 7,000 subscribers
from the entire world.
1. When you send your message, make sure that in your  From: part
there is also your real name .
2. In the subject   put something which describes your message.
   "Re: subscribe message" is not very  meaningful.
3.) If this is your first message introduce yourself.
4. At the bottom of your message type your first and/or last name
   as you would do in any conventional letter.
5. Add signatures to your messages so everybody knows what business
   you are trying to promote. Now I don't even know your website
   where I could look and try to help you. My response could be
   different depending on the business you are in.
6. Before you post your first message, read digest for at least few
   weeks and you might find that your question is answered in one of
   them. Nobody will likely try to answer your questions as stated here.
7. Read previous issues of digest.
   http://softfornet.com/archives
8. Try to get review for your site
These above points will increase likelihood of your message appearing
in any discussion list, likewise somebody will see that you are making
an effort in  getting your business running. Discussion list is a little
bit more than billboard or news group.
Messages sent to digest don't appear immediately but are kept for a few
days, then  sorted and most relevant ones are  sent to all subscribers.
This list is moderated and real human reads them before they appear.
I hope that you will take my feedback as an invitation to participation
in this discussion list and see my advice as positive input.
All norms which apply to conventional businesses, also apply to business
run over the Internet and professional appearance can be achieved
through following above guidelines.
B.F.
Dear Mr. Bogdan Fiedur,
I have been receiving my Adland's digest and I enjoy reading them. I am new
in webpage making and do not have any experience about design yet. I would
highly appreciate if you or anyone could possibly review my site which is
http://mysiteinc.com/jwd/jw1.htm and kindly advice me of some idea that will
improve it. There is a sentence in Indonesian language which I direct it
especially for Indonesian people who stay in Indonesia. I have saved some
icons in my hardisk but I still don't know how to put them to my webpage.
Again thank you very much for all your trouble.
======================Site Review Response (1)===========================
From: "Peter G. Browne" <pgb@swdomains.com>
Hello again everybody,
Time for a couple of sire reviews. (from Adlands' Digest #104)
The fist site I went to look at was located at
http://business.fortunecity.com/bechtel/692
The owner warned that the site was under construction and it is, I would like to
suggest that this site have a lot of work done to  increase its overall appeal.
I found a series of times that the site would start to load and then just sit there
at 37% for a long time, but, if I clicked on the stop button it would finally finish
loading. If I were there to try and conduct business I would have been gone
in a heartbeat. Was it the server ? I don't know. Was it the site itself? Again
I don't know. Was it the fact that the site was written with an editor and the code
was not up to snuff? I don't know. What I do know is that I would have taken my
business elsewhere. If I were to have an interest in working the affiliate program
game this is not the place I would be doing it from.
The colors just don't seem to work either. You seem to be all over the place
with them. I think that the selection of the color green puts two thoughts in
peoples minds. One : you want my money or Two : this is about money.
What you have to do is attack this with your passion, if the affiliate game
is what you want to be good at on the internet then you need to select a
different approach. You make more reference to money than is needed.
People know that they want to make money don't push it in their face or they will
ask where is the catch? Where are you trying to get me to part with MY MONEY?
Pick a background theme and stick with it, the bits and pieces just don't work.
My advise stop, look, listen and re-design, put your site on-line when it is
100% ready for people to use. A site should always be evolving and changing
it should not be under construction.
===============================================================
Now we move on to request number 2.
This request comes from a site located at http://learnlynk.com/
All in all a pleasing site to look at and an informative site. It is geared to computer
training. This would be a very basic description of the offerings here as they have
some high profile courses available as well.
I found that there is a problem with the coding of the frames and it tends to leave
large spaces on the pages. This site was also written with the use of an editor
but I think that if they want to portray the image of an IT Teaching & Learning Center
then something a little more professional in the coding is required.
One thing that this site could really use would be a list of companies that actually
have hired graduates. I think that the testimonials from the IT Industry would
really lend itself to the site. It would let the prospective student know that they
have a number of companies that constantly hire the graduates from the school.
Placement means a lot to new IT Professional.
When all is said and done a pleasing site to look at and one that you should
consider if you are interested in pursuing a career in the IT Industry.
Once again these are only my thoughts and you should base your opinions
on your own feelings. Give these sites a look and decide for yourself.
Best of luck to everyone with there on-line ventures.
Sincerely,
Peter G. Browne
How Can I Make Customers Feel Safe Buying Online?
By Joseph Jobst
Inspired by the mass of requests - like the snippets below - posted
in your excellent digest and on several other boards and discussion
lists, I've written the new article
"How Can I Make Customers Feel Safe Buying Online?"
<snippets from Adland's digest>
"We have had a web page for over two years and have tried various
efforts to increase business but without great success."
"The site has generated about 250 visits in the month that we have
been up and running. The question is how do I get those people to
buy what we are selling?"
"I spent almost two grand in six months last year buying into programs,
reports, and software. All to not make a single buck."
<begin article>
How Can I Make Customers Feel Safe Buying Online?
It's been etched in our collective psyche as netrepreneurs that
some consumers have a tendency to distrust Internet businesses.
You need to convince people to buy something just by looking at
a Web page. Most of the people who visit your site will still
find the idea of ordering online unusual.
So your site needs to inspire visitors with confidence.
It should say that yours is THE kind of company that does
things correct and right, and that if someone orders from you,
it will be a good experience.
1. Present Professional Appearance
If your site looks amateurish, it will be a quick turn-off to
your prospective consumers. They probably won't buy from someone
whose Website has spelling and grammar errors, or is loaded with
screaming headlines and gaudy, mismatched color schemes.
Of course there is no direct connection between the quality of
your site and the quality of your company. A company could have
a brilliant graphic designer and lousy products. But usually
there is a connection, and that is what visitors to your site
will assume. If you are unable to put up a good Web site, then
it seems natural to assume that your company cannot deliver good
products or services.
So check that spelling and grammar. Choose graphics that give
you that "professional look".  And be sure to compare your
Website to others in your industry.
2. Your Own Domain Name
How is the first impression you make, coming across an
address such as "www.members.freewebspaceprovider.com/user/~"?
Or is it a more established "www.yourcompany.com".
Let's face it, if your company won't spring for a domain
name at $35 a year, many potential customers will think twice
before they buy from you.
Ideally, your domain name should capture the essence of your
business. A good name is catchy and easy to remember.
Check if your desired domain name is still available
at:  < http://linz1.net/vsdomck.html >
3. Offer Several Different Payment Options
The most successful Web sellers realize that many consumers are
wary of entering their credit card information online.
Although accepting credit cards is a MUST, it makes sense to
accept payments via snailMail, email, phone, fax, and accept
company checks, etc. for those more "cautious" customers.
(Beware of tricky merchant account dealers - read more about
at < http://linz1.net/merchant.html >)
4. Emphasize Service
As I mentioned above, most of the people who visit your site
will still find the idea of buying online a little strange.
You have to reassure them. The most powerful confidence builder
is a top-quality site:  high production values go to influence
directly on the visitor's subconscious.
But it's also important to reassure visitors explicitly.
For example, if you are determined to provide great customer
service, tell your visitors so, right on your site.
Guarantee that they will be satisfied with what they buy from
you, or you will refund their money with no questions asked.
If you try ordering online yourself, you'll find one of the
biggest concerns that you have is: who are these guys?
Did they actually get my order?
Are they going to send me the products?
When?
So make sure that you ship orders quickly. Web users want fast
results. They don't want to hear that they should expect to
wait 4-6 weeks for delivery; this is not 1970!
5. Build Confidence
Customers want to know how to get in touch with you if they have
questions. Be sure to supply your email address, your street
address, and a contact phone/fax number.
When a customer does send you email, respond promptly! Customers
deserve to be treated like gold. If you can, make it a policy to
respond to email within an hour or two at most. Customers will
be delighted to see that you care about them.
Anything you can do to show that you are "for real" will help
increase orders. If possible, include an image of your catalog
or your company's building, customer testimonials, or even a
brief company history.
Apply for a Certified Safe Shopping Site by organizations such
as Better Business Bureau, PublicEye, RSACi, etc. and show their
logos prominently.
6. Use Appropriate Risk-protection Measures
Are you shipping expensive items? If so, be sure to use a
package service that provides proof of delivery. There will
always be some customers out there who falsely claim that a
package was not received (and occasionally there will be packages
that truly are lost or stolen). Since you bear the responsibility
for those losses, you should take care not to put large amounts
of money at risk.
7. Describe Your Products Correct
Be sure that customers are familiar with your products before
they order. You can achieve this goal by thoroughly describing
your merchandise, showing photos, and disclosing any important
limitations.
Don't surprise your customers!
If you're selling a book, how many pages is it? Provide an
excerpt or a chapter for free reading on your site.
If it's a video, what's the running time? Display a short
sequence, supply an online viewer perhaps for free.
If it's a consumable item (such as food, gifts, etc.),
what quantity are you shipping? How is it packed. Display
photos.
If you manage your customers' expectations before they buy,
you'll avoid disappointing them later.
Wishing Everybody Successful Selling!
