===============S u c c e s s    S t o r y ============================
From: Marilou Ovalsen <marilou@philipov.com>

Success Story:

I met my Australian husband on "A Foreign Affair"  four years ago. (He paid
hundreds of dollars for addresses and sent 70 letters...he got me!! (I am
Filipino)  We now live in New Zealand.

The way we met and his passion for computers led us to set up a site to help
others like me.
We noted the proliferation of "dating - personals" sites.. Hundreds of
pretty photos..
We also noted that there are fewer actual "matchmaking" sites.  That is, a
place where a person takes on the task of finding someone a partner.
Of these most are very expensive, from $800 to $2,500.
With the abundance of women available on the Internet who have an email
address I felt this was a ridiculous amount to pay.  (I charge $100 to find
an Asian, Latin or Russian lady for a man and have 100% success so far.)

So, I set up my first domain with lots of useful stuff from my Husbands true
romance novel from the Cold War days to his book on relationships, reviews
of "Introduction Agencies" and information on immigration and culturally
diverse relationships.

I spent 14 hours a day, seven days a week for several months to learn all I
could about design, promotion and just where all the available women were to
be found.
My first domain covers a range of areas related to finding a soulmate and so
I have devoted my second domain to strictly matchmaking and relevant
information about cross-cultural liasons.

I am still not in many search engines (Yahoo!!) but I am getting well over
400 uniques a day and climbing fast. Someone else mentioned reciprocal
links.  I hated 'giving away' my hard earned customers but have found that a
listing on 'Top 100' type sites returns from 20 to 60 times the hits I give
them. Very nice..
I am even beginning to have a steady income, mostly from matchmaking but
also from affiliation with the sites I have reviewed. I expect to be making
a very good wage within six months, and I haven't touched news groups, paid
promotion, newsletters etc as yet.
I hope this may be of interest.

Pauline, hotyellow is NOT correct that the SE's will not accept URLs
if they don't have their own domain name - which is what I think you
are saying here? I have several pages that are listed in the SEs -
one in the top 10 on Excite! - which is on my ISP home page!

As for doorway or gateway pages, I have read pros and cons with them.
Some say that the SEs are getting smarter and will NOT index a
gateway page that simply redirects to another page. Others say
you can get that page indexed if you put real content in it that
is relevant to the keywords that you put in the META tags on it.
Content is key to any page you have - do change your META tag
keywords for each page, making sure that the keyword relates to
your content on that page. Then submit each page to the SEs on
its own. You can have a link on each of those pages to your
main page that you want to get visitors to. But be sure the
information on your gateways is interesting enough to make
them WANT to come to your main page.

To see what keywords are getting the most visitors, visit some
sites that sell the same sort of information that you do and
look at the page source. What keywords are they using? Look
at the ones on the search engines that are in the top 10 -
do a search for your own keyword and see who comes up. I
think you can have up to 100 keywords in your META tags, so
choose ones that are very descriptive and that people will
be looking for.

Good luck with your new business!! I think you have chosen
a good product to sell!

Best regards,
Terri

From: viv abbott NoFraud@tripod.net
Subject: Need for a focussed  Cyber Law Website

Though there are a number of great legal sites on the web, there is still great
need fora focussed cyber-law website. Cyber fraud is a unique, largely unexplored
terrain offering unlilmeited scope to crooks and rip-off artisits. 'Fluid' identities,
'fluid' jurisdictions, and a 'fluid' language all favour the cyber crook.

A recent contribution bemoaned the fact that 450 millions EU netizens were
reluctant to buy online, suggesting the reason for this was that they needed
'to touch' the commoditiy. This cannnot true. Mail-order business has flourished
on this side of the Atlantic just as elsewhere.

No, the reason for reluctance to do business online comes down to the simple
question of TRUST.

Have you ever tried to get your money back from another continent?

At the moment, problems of legal jurisdiction are still almost unresolvable. Laws
differ from one jurisdiction to another. In what jurisdiction should redress
be sought? And then, it may not be easy to establish the legal jurisdiction
of our cyber shark. You can see how this works out in practice at
http://www.members.tripod.com/~NoFraud/casestudy.htm
A legal website giving information and support in this
complex area would be most useful.

Then, look at problems raised by 'cyberspeak' that strange
lingo practised by some folk doing business online: the art
of misleading, confusing. Some effort is certainly needed
to clarify this behaviour if online business is to prosper.
We have a fine selection of cyberspeak in full flight at,
http://www.members.tripod.com/~NoFraud/cyberspeak.htm

Any discussion of online fraud must include the question of
email abuse. A recent study of one prodigious emailer's
output for one month led to some amazing ocnclusions.
It seems spam can damage the sender perhaps more than
the recipient.
http://www.members.tripod.com/~NoFraud/emailabuse.htm

A Cyber Law website offering support, a kind of one-stop
shop, dealing with on these 3 fronts would provide a much
needed service on both sides of the Atlantic.

It would also faciliatate the development of online commerce.
There is also the precarious position of 'dealers' now that
Affiliates are the latest online explosion. What exactly is the
legal responsibility of the 'dealer' to the sponsor company,
and to the customer when an online deal goes sour?

Subject: Introduction and Request for Feedback

Hello Adlanders,

My name is Dennis Moore and I have been viewing Adland for several months,
and have come to the conclusion that your feedback is worthwhile and
trustworthy.  Therefore, I have a request for all of you:

I've started a unique program online for creative people.  It is an online
book project, where people sign up for a membership for $5 a month for a 12
month writing project.  Members send in their idea submissions, which are
read and the top ones are chosen to be incorporated into the following
month's storyline, which will be written by our in-house writer.  Those
submissions chosen, will receive a cash prize, and can win one every month if
their ideas are chosen every month.  After the story is written, all members
will be given resell rights to the finished book, and we hope to turn the
story into a movie, which the members will also receive screen credit.

What I'd like from all of you is feedback on the project.  Is it a workable
project?  I've gotten decent response from several people, and some have even
joined already.  But in order for us to launch on July 5/99, we need 10,000
members, so that we can give out more prizes to more people.  Please review
our site at http://DenMark.cjb.net and give us the feedback on our project.
We believe in this project, and want you all to have a fun diversion to just
business.

Thanks for your time,
Dennis Moore

I am not a hater of spam.  Spam is simply cyber-fliers...big deal.
All one needs to do is press abutton and Whamo-all that nasty
spam evaporates.  Not like you have to burn it or anything like Real
fliers.  As a matter of fact, I don't even mind spam, some of my
*best* ideas have come to me in a flash after reading some Spam.

Spam can be mind-less drivel or it can be the doorway to the best
idea you have yet to come up with.  My last *bright idear* can to
me just after reading some spam and I am now making 340$ (and
growing daily) a week with one program from that idea.  ALL
Thanks to reading some spam.

Why does SPAM have such a bad name?  I never do it because it
appears to be the cyber moral equivilant to ......hmmmm...anyway.

Spam.  Who named it Spam?  As a fishing guide we used the term
*spam-it* when shorelunch had to be made from IT as no fish were
caught!  So...I find the term itself rather funny.  As in "Did you have
to spam it today, Mel?"

At least in cyber space you don't have to EAT spam!  You can
just read it or delete it by the bulk.

When my mail box has a bit of spam or is overflowing with

Just another look at spam.  So....will I be thrown out of the digest

Greetings.
I am very interersted in learning about some good places to put my
classifieds. I just recently jumped into the internet and decided that I
needed to learn more about it. I have been on the sidelines too long.
Your ideas would be most welcome. I already have found Adland as a good
source of free classifieds as well as another website that has a free book as
a starter. I read the book, it was pretty good, and later I got a resource
guide from the same outfit. If anyone is interested I would be happy to talk
about it.
I would love to hear from anyone with any other inexpensive website

Many thanks.

Signature Files: How To Sign, Seal & Deliver Them!
By John Ellis

Hello everyone!

How's your business? Fine I hope!

In this issue we are going to talk about one of the greatest
marketing tools online. Singnature Files (or Resources Boxes).
Right away I know your reaction; you're saying "I already know
about SIG files and how to use them; I'm using them everyday."

It's funny how many other marketers online feel the same way and
jump to conclusions when you mention the topic of SIG files.
They feel it's nothing major like publishing your ezine or
copywriting your ads or sales letters.

This reminds me of the little termite. When you view it with the
eye, it seems very harmless or that it can't do very much
damage. But let a bunch of them get into the foundation of your
home. You'll have major problems! The foundation of your home
will be ruined, and this can cause the value of your home to
depreciate.

The same applies when using SIG files in your online marketing
arsenal. You shouldn't over look them or take them lightly. The
same attention you give to writing ad copies and sales letters;
should be the same energies used for your SIG files. Because
writing a bad SIG file can ruin your responses to your ads,
sales letters or any other marketing tools you may use.

What is a SIG file or a resource box?

If you look at the end of almost any email you've received
you'll see a SIG file.

IE:

John John
CEO
xyz company
xyz@abc.com
http://www.xyz.com

The sender uses their SIG file to give you a brief description of
who they are and what products or services they have to offer.
You can also find SIG files being used on messages boards,
opt-in mailing list, discussion groups, guest books and
everywhere else on the web.

If your SIG file is used to give the reader information about
your website, products or services; then you can consider it
sort of like an ad, right?

And as I always ask, "What's the purpose of any type of
advertisement?"

It's only purpose is to inform? It's to entertain or show off?
It's to let everyone know you are the CEO of the xyz company,
right?

Wrong! The only purpose for any type of advertisement is to make
the sell! That's it! If you're in business not to make money,
then you're in the wrong business. The only purpose for your SIG
file is to lure the reader to your site, so that they will make
a purchase.

Now let's take another look at the SIG file.

John John
CEO
xyz company
xyz@abc.com
http://www.xyz.com

Will this SIG file motivate you to visit the xyz site? It
doesn't do anything for me. I wouldn't visit the site. But now
let's take a look at how you should wirte your SIG files.

You are aware or have heard of the A.I.D.A. formula, right? This
formula states that any ad you write should Attract its reader
attention. It should create and Interest and the Desire to Act
upon your offer immediately. Commit this simple formula to
memory. You can use it when you write your ads, sales letters,
SIG files or any other type of advertisment. By implementing
this formula into your SIG files your responses will increase
dramatically.

But before you can effectively use the A.I.D.A. formula, your
ads or SIG files must answer the most important question to its
reader, "What's in it for ME? Why should I visit your site? What
benefits will I receive from visiting your site? etc..." This
means your SIG file must be packed with "client centered"
benefits.

The SIG file above won't be effective because it fails to answer
any of these questions. If you are using similar SIG files as
the one above; your SIG file will also fail. Now let's try to
rewrite the SIG file. This time we are going to use the A.I.D.A.
formula and pack it with "client centered" benefits.

John John
Do YOU need MORE traffic to YOUR site? Click Here NOW!
FREE resources & marketing tools! Send for FREE Report NOW!
xyz@abc.com
http://www.xyz.com

I know what your first reaction was when you saw this new SIG
file. "But he didn't let them know what position he holds at the
company, or his title. He didn't even give them the name of his
company. What's the use?"

You're absolutely right. I excluded that information. Not that
it wasn't important, but it has no relevance in your SIG file.

It is said that most of your ads will only have 30 seconds to
capture the attention and interest of its reader. If you fail to
catch their attention in this time frame, you might as well hang
it up. So it's essential that you eliminate useless words and
only use effective words that show "client centered" benefits.
Remember your SIG file should be very brief, not wordy. Only
contain 5 or at the most 6 lines of text. We will discuss the
reasons for this later.

But for now let's look at our new SIG file. Does it contain
"client centered" benefits? Does it answer the A.I.D.A. formula?
Does it answer the "What's in it for ME?" questions?

Does this SIG file catch your Attention? If you're a webmaster
and you want more visitors to your site, yes it does.

Does it create an Intrest? "MORE traffic". The webmaster
knows that the more visitors they can get to their sites the
more sales they'll make. Yes, this ad does create Interest.

Does it create a Desire to act on this offer immediately? Yes,
it does create a sense of 'urgency'. If you want more hits to
your website you must "Click Here NOW!" or "Send for FREE
report NOW!"

Does this SIG file call the reader to Action? Yes, it tells the
read exactly what to do next to take advantage of this offer.
"Click Here NOW!" or "Send for FREE Report NOW!"

Overview:

1. Your SIG file should be concise. No more that 5 or 6 lines.
Don't write a SIG file with a long list of all the programs
you're involved in. This is a turn off. It's just like visiting
a site with only a long list of links to all the webmaster's
associate programs. This is ineffective and can also confuse the
reader; because they wont be able to determine which link to
click. Provide a link to one of your main pages where they'll be
able to find your other links. Eliminate useless and irrelevant
words. Remember to use and test several SIG files. You can use a
different one for each advertising medium.

2. Remember to use the A.I.D.A. formula. Your SIG file should
Attract and grab the reader's attention. Create an Interest and
a Desire to act on your offer now (sense of 'urgency'. Tell the
reader specifically what Actions to take next, if they want to
take advantage of your offer. "Click here" or "Send for report".

3. In order for you to successfully use the A.I.D.A. formula you
must pack your SIG file with "client centered" benefits. Answer
the "What's in it for ME?" questions.
