Greetings All

Welcome  (117)  new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

Fiona Heares asks in today's issue (New Message 5) if  Yahoo is pushing limits
with their move to take copyright and licensing rights for free from Geocities
users.
As far as Geocites concept goes I have to really ask myself  how far could this
company go with only advertising revenue. Did Yahoo had to do something to
keep this site profitable or is this just an attempt  to make their investors happy
after they bought Geocities (I belive for $5 billion) and couldn't squeeze to much
out of it.
I'm observing definitely  more aggressive marketing  efforts since Yahoo took
over , through mailings which are being sent to Geocities  members.
I used to be one of them  and I'm still on their subscriber list.

Hi Bogdan and Adlanders!

Laurie, it was great to read more about you and your success
story - I often use your humor in my own e-zines - always
crediting you and letting my readers know I saw it here in
Adland of course! :)

Enzo, in all the reading I have been doing lately, one thing stands
out about Associate programs - a personal recommendation goes a long
way toward getting someone to sign up in the program under you.

This doesn't have to be just a single line ad saying "I'm using this
and making money" .. put up a page on your own web site and tell
your visitors about how you found the program, what your experience
with your upline and their upline has been like - make it a personal
"letter" to the visitor - don't just repeat what they are going to
find (and probably professionally written) once they get to your
Associate program site!  Don't use that page to advertise any
other program - you want to get them to go on to the one that
you initially advertised!  Then use the address of YOUR page
in your advertisements about the Associate program.

Make it worth their time to give you their email address while
they are there - have a FREE report on something that that
visitor will find useful available on autoresponder - and then
be sure you have your link to the Associate program right
below that so they can go on to get that information too. You
will want it to be easy for them to ask for the report -
using a mailto: with the subject filled in to let you know
where they were when they filled it out ie:
mailto:autoresponder-report@abc.com?subject=associate-program-name

Not everyone of your visitors are going to ask for your report,
so you still won't get ALL the email addresses - but you will
have many more than you would by sending them directly to your
Associate program link, plus you will get another chance at
getting it because you are offering another FREE report that
might peak their interest.  And if you have access to your
logs at your server, you will be able to see who was on that
page in the log.  You can bet that the Associate program uses
the logs to see who visited your page on THEIR server!

You can get a free tracker like Extreme-DM
http://z.extreme-dm.com/  that has a wealth
of statistical information, including the last 20 visitors
to your site and where they came from if you don't have access
to your server logs (or don't know how to read them).

I hope that helps!

Best regards,
Terri Robinson

Subject: Just a comment on AllAdvantage...

I don't write them off yet. True, $200+million IS a daunting number.
And true, they may have to cut the hours back. However, at .80 an hour
with a 50% profit margin that is still only $1.60 per hour to have an
ad impression seen 60 or 120 times (or more). That's an incredibly low
price!!

(Also - remember most companies operate very well on considerably less
margin. Look at Life Plus and they are a PRODUCT company with much
more overhead and many non-buyers they 'carry'.)

I hadn't thought about the possibility of being able to advertise with
them before. Now, suddenly, it looks doable and affordable. Just
think... 10 hours of non-stop viewing... $16???
100 hours (6,000-12,000 impressions) .... $160???

Wow! I'm there!! If you have anything at all decent to sell, can you
imagine what that would do for your sales????

I think I'll contact them....

Hello fellow Adlanders,
I just got finished with this weeks issue. I thought the article
about AllAdvantage was very good. I never thought about it in terms of
how much they would have to pay all the members. I started the program a
few months ago and like everyone else I am still wating for the browser
bar. I am currently using GoToWorld and it seems to be working okay
right now. They pay you to use there web browser with an ad bar at the
top. It is based on 40 hours a month. I just got my first check and it
was for 50 dollars. Its not alot of money but it does compensate me for
some of my time on the net. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Subject: Request for Articles from Adland's Subscribers

Hi Fellow Adlanders,

As always, I enjoy reading my Adland's digest on a
regular basis.  I think that there is a need for quality
information out there and Bogdan is doing a great
job organizing it!

I have a request for all of you.  I have co-founded the
Marketing Course Newsletter Network, along with
Didier Bonneville-Roussey and Renee Kennedy.  We
decided that there should be a few newsletters out there
that dealt with specific themes in each issue of an ezine.
Each issue of our newsletters are focused on one topic
such as web writing, search engines, or ezine publishing to
name a few and those interested in subscribing can
visit <http://www.healthandmoneytips.com/MCNN/>.

We are compiling a marketing course that will contain
articles from many contributors such as Marty Foley,
Dr. Michel Fortin, Ron Scheer, Jennifer Johnson just
to name a few...but we need more articles to fill up
the course.  If you would like to contribute an article,
please email me at:

<mailto:mcnn@healthandmoneytips.com?subject=article>

and I will let you know what we are still looking for.
(off the top of my head...affiliate programs is still open,
as well as banner advertising, newsgroups, building
community, and we are open to other useful marketing
topics.)

By the way, this will give you great exposure since
this will be passed on to all subscribers of the
contributing newsletters...potentially thousands
will see your article which will include a resource box.
The marketing course will be free for all to request by
autoresponder or download as an ebook.

Bogdan, if you want to do an article on marketing with
classifieds,  we would be honoured to include it.  The
deadline for articles is July 1st, 1999.

Subject: Search Engine to Increase Traffic

Hello,

I'm curious if anyone can point me in the right direction. I want to
turn my Website into a traffic center (don't we all). What I want to do
is hire someone to build me a search engine. Not a Free For All links
page, but a real search engine with a spider. This seems to be a
marketing topic that people don't talk about much. I don't know why,
because every real search engine I've heard of gets thousands of hits
daily, if not more. We all know that traffic = sales.

I was wondering if anyone has checked into this, and could please give
me contact info on someone who could do this, and give me prices if you
have a ballpark idea of the expenses involved in something like this?
I've seen Dr. Lant offering a Search Engine Plug-In, but you have to
have your domain hosted at Worldprofit to take advantage of it. Plus,
it's better owning my own spider.

I haven't found any free ones on the internet yet, has anyone else? If
so, I know a CGI programmer who can probably set me up if I had the
spider.

Thank you very much for your time.

Subject: Review Site

Hello,

I am the "webmaster" for a startup business that sells a very specialized
inventory.  We only sell things made in Alaska.  I have tried many things
to increase traffic to our site, search engine submissions, free contests,
press releases, link exchanges, and banner exchanges.  None of these things
seem to be working too well, and the President of the company has become
concerned to the point of possibly trying unsolicited email (spam).

I do NOT want to do that, as I find it extremely annoying when I receive
spam, and it is against my professional ethic.

So, to sum up, any advice as to what to do to the site, or other marketing
techniques that can be given would be appreciated.  The site can be found

Subject:Have yahoo gott too big for their boots?

Dear Adlanders,
I received some info through one of my newsgroups and wondered if anyone
else was aware of it.
It caused me some concern and thought this was something that those of you
who are using geocities free web pages should be aware of.

Apparently geocities have merged with Yahoo and as a result people who have
free websites with geocities are required to re-register with Yahoo.
It appears to me that once you re-register with yahoo you are required to
to allow yahoo to copy any of your work, graphics etc at their whim! (as
per below)
"By submitting Content to any Yahoo property, you automatically grant, or
warrant that the owner of such Content has expressly granted, Yahoo the
royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive and fully sublicensable
right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate,
create derivative works from, distribute, perform and display such Content
(in whole or part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in other works in any
form, media, or technology now known or later developed."

Is this right?, Are they actually able to DO THAT?....use any of  your work
for their own purposes, without permission??
I had always thought yahoo a moderately reputable co. Not anymore.  Have
yahoo gott too big for their boots? or is this another form of user
pays??...and pays and pays and pays.....

Response: Mr. Birdwell,
I will try to keep from being too harsh but as a member of the Adland
Digest for quite some time I feel this needs to be said. Why are you
requesting a site review of a MLM site that has replicating pages that
are the same for each of it's members? The site review is meant for
people who have designed their own sites and are asking for feedback on
design, layout, loading times, ease of navigation, etc. You said in an
earlier post how you hated SPAM, well you have just spammed our digest
by blatantly promoting your own MLM site!

Getting Your Business Noticed
"Four Corners of Success"
by Brian Garvin

It's irrevevant if your business is Online, Offline or both. The
resources below will aid ANY BUSINESS. I currently run a Distributor
program for my CD and I am completely amazed at the online resources
that are passed on to me by some of my seasoned distributors, Online and
Offline. Golden Prose aside, please let me get right down to business
and mention four resources which I think are truly amazing, and which
I'm certain you will as well:

1.  Online Media Outlet - This is a Public Service Website. The URL is
http://www.mrsmithmedia.com You can literally contact thousands of
magazines such as Yahoo Internet Life and newspapers such as New York
Times and Chicago Sun with just the click of a button. Most people don't
know about this site. Imagine getting your Press Release published by
one of these giants. It happens to some lucky business owner everyday.
Also, even if a small paper publishes your article, there's a very good
chance that a big site will pick up on it and decide to publish it as
well. Warning: Spending time at this site could provide good fortune!

2.  Free Voicemail/Fax Number - This company is just setting up. This
free service is slick. The URL is http://www.ureach.com You can go here
to pick up free voicemail and fax every month. You get 1 hour of free
messages every month, which will satisfy most people. You also get a
free one minute greeting. Both of these time limits were a little short
for me, so what I did was emailed a David Ittner dittner@ureach.com He
told me that he apologized, and that the company was brand new and
hadn't had a conclusize pricing scheme in place yet. What was really
cool is that he adjusted my voicemail time to 3 hrs instead of one hour,
plus he let me record my greeting (about 3 minutes instead of one) on
his machine and manually transferred it over to mine. Now is that great
customer service or what!

What happens is you sign up at their website for the free service. Then
you are assigned:

A Ureach Free 1-800 Number
Password
User ID
5 Digit Pin #

All you do is make your 1-800 number accessible via Print Media or
online. People call it, hear your sales pitch and leave their message.
All you do is sign-in at Ureach's Home-Page with your assigned USER ID
and Password. This is no harder than getting your email from Hotmail.
Actually, it's easier because this server isn't presently bogged down.

What happens is when people record their message in your voicemail box,
it converts those messages to ".wav" files and sends them to your inbox.
You simply login to your inbox and play back the ".wav" files. Very
slick!

Also, you can advertise this 1-800 number given to you as a fax number.
when someone sends you a fax, it converts it to an email sent to your
mailbox. You can even send outgoing faxes from the Web. I asked David
about the geographical location of this service, and he said United
States for sure and he thought that Mexico and Canada were fair game.

This service is currently in Beta, so why not Beta Test it!

3.  Free Fax Number - I haven't played around with this service yet, but
try http://www.efax.com They provide free fax numbers. Once you signup,
you will be mailed a personal fax number, a Pin Number and an URL
telling you where to download software that comes with their service.

4.  Discussion Groups - Want Point and Click access to the most highly
circulated, popular discussion groups on the internet. Look no further!
Just point your browser to this URL:
http://www.garvinweb.com/discussion_groups.shtml

>From this Webpage, you will be able to subscribe, unsubscribe and post
to all the popular newsgroups. This beats having to go to 10 different
Websites each time you decide to post, and surfing their Websites to
find out how to subscribe, post, etc.. What a hassle! Just go here and
do it all!

In closing, I want to mention that promotion is an ongoing effort, but
that people are always creating resources to make promotion an enjoyable
process. Promotion doesn't have to be a headache.

Good Luck in all your Online Marketing efforts.

MAKES YOU WONDER HOW THESE PEOPLE CAN SURVIVE !!!!!!

A lady at work was seen putting a credit card into her
floppy drive and pulling it out very quickly. When
inquired as to what she was doing, she said she was
shopping on the Internet and they asked for a credit
card number, so she's using the ATM "thingy".
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I recently saw a distraught young lady weeping beside
her car.  "Do you need some help?"  I asked. She
replied, "I knew I should have replaced the battery to
this remote door unlocker.  Now I can't get into my
car.  Do you think they (pointing to a distant
convenient store) would have a battery to fit this?"
"Hmmm, I dunno. Do you have an alarm too?"  I asked.
"No, just this remote thingy," she answered, handing
it and the car keys to me.  As I took the key and
manually unlocked the door, I replied, "Why don't you
drive over there and check about the batteries . . .
  it's a long walk."
