Greetings All

Welcome  (61)  new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like everybody to look at the site review in this issue.
We have  four in depth  site reviews for  http://www.alaskamade.com/
I'm just posting one today but will also include others as space permits.
When you read them,  you will notice that reviewers have spent considerable
amount of time to review the site and after that spent good amount of time to
put their thoughts into writing to make very  informative  articles attempting to
help Brian with his traffic problems.
The reason I mention that is that some of you are asking for site review
(majority) not really  presenting any issues with it.  You just want your site
reviewed. I understand that anybody needs traffic and site review is going to
give you some but you won't get help if you need any, since reviewers don't
know what your problem is.
So if you want help, provide genuine reason for your site review  and you will
find lots of dedicated webmasters going there and offering you their advice,
otherwise you might get harsh words which is  probably not what you are
looking for.
To Brian:
$199 Yahoo-like Directory from Anaconda.net looks pretty impressive.
Installation is offered for $50 more. The site list is maintained by the
Open Directory project. I do not know if it spiders, but the database is
pretty massive.Netscape, Lycos and Hotbot all use Open Directory info,
so this is a real interesting concept and it looks like there are
probably no licensing fees (read conditions and terms). I'm not exactly
sure how it works, but it requires CGI on your server.
Other search engines and/or spiders are either free or for sale at:
http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Searching/Searching_the_Web/
If you do not have CGI capabilities on your server, or don't want to try
to customize a script, try the remotely hosted list here:
Subject: Have yahoo gott too big for their boots?
Hello. I am writing in reference to your recent article about Yahoo and
Geocities. Unless I misunderstood the article, the author is saying that
Yahoo recently purchased Geocities, and that they are now planning to claim
copyright on all of the sites that Geocities houses. Did I miss the point
here, because anyone familiar with US Copyright laws would know that this
can not be done. Although the Library of Congress will register your
copyright for a small fee it is not really necessary as copyright is held by
the author/creator of the item in question from the moment it is created,
whether (s)he registered the copyright or not. The only exception would be
if it were a "work for hire" whereby Geocities would have paid the webmaster
to develope a site/graphics specificly for them. In that event both the
author and Geocities would hold the copyright jointly.
I can not say who currently owns Yahoo, but I was working for Ziff-Davis at
the time that they purchased Yahoo a couple of years ago. Even though they
have since used the name for a magazine title, the primary reason why they
originally bought Yahoo was for the free advertisments. Back then Yahoo was
internet king with 250000 hits per day, and as owner of yahoo that meant
unlimited advertising potential for ZD, which meant that they could charge
more for advertising in their print publications. I would imaging that Yahoo
purchasing Geocities would be based on a similar premis, and has nothing to
do with copyrighted material. I would be very interested to read the
original document in which the author of the recent article got their
information.
Hi all,
I just started getting this newsletter and it's fantastic.  I just
wanted to address the question regarding how Yahoo! makes $ over and
above advertising.  Yes, YHOO just bought GCTY (Geocities) and increased
it's direct reach to customers, but what alot of people forget is YHOO's
other purchase.....BCST (Broadcast.com)!!  This is huge.  Everything
right now is pointing towards broadband access (cable and xDSL).  BCST
provides the ability to view movies, downloads, real-time video
conferencing (remember the victoria secrets show on the web), etc, etc,
etc.  Eventually, YHOO will offer all these services (prob. free at
first then for a fee).  Cable access has less than a 1% share of the
total access market.  Merrill Lynch analyst Henry Blodget (very
reputable on net stocks) predicts a 15-20% market share for cable access
by the year 2003!!! That's 2000% growth for an industry that itself has
on average of 1 million new people per month.  Go Long on YHOO!!
I recently stumbled across another Internet Company that pays you to view ad,
very similar to All Advantage.
For every hour you view ads they pay me 60 cents. Just like All Advantage
you will download a viewer program that will sit on your computer and
periodically display advertising. They also pay you when you sign up people
under you.  The company is currently allowing people to sign up, and they
say the viewer application will be released within a few weeks. They will
be allowing people to start on a first-come, first-served basis.  They are
located at <http://www.epipo.com/>.
Has anybody else heard about this?
From: Deb Goldfinch <debndave@alphalink.com.au>
Subject:Site review on AlaskaMade.com
http://www.alaskamade.com/index.html
Hi Brian,
I am reviewing your site, not as a professional web designer, but as a
casual surfer with marketing experience.  I'm sure their will be some
additional
comments from all you super keen design reviewers out there to compliment
what I have to say!
Firstly, the page took an awful long time to load...I had time to make
myself a cup of coffee while I waited.  Don't know whether that is just my
system or the same for everyone..but if I wasn't visiting for an express
purpose I wouldn't have hung around for it.
I think you could scrap the buttons marked Catalogue, and Request Catalogue.
I went to these first thinking I would get a listing of products and was
then redirected to "Shopping" (another 3 minute wait for the page to
download)
The option of requesting a hard copy of the catalogue, I feel, should be
given somewhere on the shopping page.
I really like the polar bear logo, and the colour scheme of the pages...I
find it very pleasing to the eye.  I found the content of the home  page a
little disappointing though. Basically the page is just a collection of
navigation buttons in the top frame, these are repeated again below the line
in a slightly different format . If you then include the navigation text
bars, you have the same info repeated four times on the one screen, with not
much else.
Content on your first page is the key here - and the answer lies in
traditional marketing concepts.  The basic question is:  what is your USP?
(Unique Selling Point)  I'm down here in Australia...I'm sitting here
looking at your page and saying..okay - stuff from Alaska..big deal.  It
could be stuff from Hawaii or Timbuctoo....you have to show me WHY I should
want to buy from Alaska.  What's so great or unique about it that I should
spend my consumer dollar at your site?
For example...the fact that you are in Alaska is a selling point in itself,
as Alaska is quite an exotic sounding place to the rest of us!  Make your
homepage a resource full of info about Alaska and useful links to all things
Alaskan (not just businesses) Eg:  tourist attraction web sites, links to
historical info.. . Then, for example, create a targeted e-mail campaign to
schools
from very different regions etc...offer information or links on Alaska for
use in kids projects etc. Get a sister city sort of thing going...
Play up the Alsakan info angle and you attract not just shoppers but people
interested in Alaska who will bookmark the site next time they're looking
for an unusual item to buy.  Target e-mail to on-line communities with an
interest in
Alaska, skiing, sled racing, polar bears, Eskimos.. etc etc.
Your range of clothing appeals to rugged outdoors types...target e-zines and
newgroups of interest to those types. Use a sig file whenever posting
messages to the newsgroups...tailor the sig file particularly for that
newsgroup.. ie:  rather than ...For all things Alaskan:  URL
use instead:...Want heavy duty outdoor gear?...buy  the best..Alaskan!...URL
Same goes for the various other products you sell..work out what is unique
about them, who the target consumer is,  and then target on-line
publications that deal with those groups. Amend your sig file accordingly.
Plan your year ahead to coincide with various holidays..ie: a big push on
camping/outdoor gear closer to Father's Day!  Decorative items on Mother's
Day...Perhaps have a section on your home page just for the ever changing
specials...when no particular promotion is going, the free contest could
take its place there!
Another great idea for a special interest site such as yours is the facility
where you ask your visitors to refer you site to a friend...they then just
fill in the details in the form and it generates an e-mail to the friend
inviting them to visit the site. Perhaps the invite could be in the postcard
format you have offered on your site.  Word of mouth is one of the best
methods of promotion.  Offer discounts to current visitors if they refer a
certain number of friends to the site....
Speaking of which..offer your visitors the option of joining your mailing
list. Then you can bulk e-mail your list at various times to announce new
promotions or products, or changes to the site.  Repeat business is the name
of the game!
Try to incorporate the contest/promotion section, the mailing list sign up,
refer a friend somewhere on the home page....the less pages that have to be
downloaded to access the info, the more likely it is to be seen and acted
upon.
Make sure you print the URL of your site on all off-line stationery and use
it within off-line ad campaigns.
Anyway I hope I haven't gone on too long...I really wanted to comment on
this site as I think it has a lot of potential...I look forward to viewing
any changes you might decide to make.  Good Luck with it!
If you want to really succeed in business you need
A DIFFERENT WAY OF THINKING!  (c) 1999 AOM
By Leon Brickey
We all have reasons for going into business. For some of us it's to
provide more income for our families; while others are in business
only to obtain wealth for themselves. Either is fine, but most business
owners fit into one or both of these categories.
The key element that both these groups share in common is the fact
they both want a larger, more substantial income. I think it would be
safe to say most of them would like to achieve financial independence?.
and some probably share the same feelings I have?They would like to
be STONE COLD WEALTHY!! :-)
I've been involved in MLM and home business opportunities for the last
four years. I've seen some normal everyday people make some
incredible amounts of money. I myself have been very fortunate to
receive some really nice checks from time to time. The fact is that
there are EMPIRES being built by small and home business owners.
Here is a very candid look at some very basic concepts that will help
you tremendously once you incorporate them into your way of thinking.
The fact is that we've all been "brainwashed!" But there is still hope.
We need to rid ourselves of all this "traditional hog wash" we've been
made to believe and adapt a different way of thinking!
1)   Be careful of folks who tell you: "It won't work!"
This will most always be the people you care the most about.
Your family and friends. They think they are saving you from ruins.
They mean well, but they are discouraging you. Stay clear. Don't
listen to them. Refuse to discuss your business with them!
Besides most of the time they are broke financially just like
you when you started. Don't EVER take business/financial advice from
anyone that isn't doing MUCH BETTER THAN YOU! If you want to
know about making money ask somebody who's made lots of money.
You just can't listen to family and friends when it comes to business.
I want to be like my family in some ways but not always financially.
Don't let someone making $20,000 a year tell you that you can't make
$20,000 a month with your business!
Very respectfully don't listen to folks you don't want to be like.
Surround yourself with positive people and listen to business
training and motivational tapes. These really do make a difference.
Especially over time!
Avoid negativity like the plague!
2) The people who make big money in network marketing, small
busineses, and home based businesses are no different than you and
I. Oh sure, they me be talented. More than likely they are VERY
motivated. But, they are a person just like you and I. They have good
days and bad days just like everyone else. What separates them
from the person who fails is that they hang tough during the hard times
and keep pushing on. And believe me we ALL have hard times. We've
all got at least 100 reasons we should quit. The real winners just keep
focused on the goal of financial independence for them and/or their family!
Don't whine about what went wrong! Find out what you need to do to fix it
and DO IT!
3) Work is OK. Work is a good thing. It provides income; which in turn provides
food, shelter, clothing, education, etc. But the concept of having to continue to
work for money till we die is not a good thing! At some point it has to stop!
You can't work forever. I'm not so sure the government will be able to care for
all of us. In fact they almost certainly WILL NOT be able to care for all of us.
But we have to find a way to keep the money coming in after we quit working.
Sounds too good to be true doesn't it?
Just because something sounds too good to be true doesn't necessarily
mean it IS too good to be true does it?
If I bought a lottery ticket and scratched the ticket to find out that I had just
won a million dollars; that would sound to good to be true. But it WOULD be
true if I had a winning ticket!
No different in business. Just because something sounds too good to be
true, doesn't necessarily mean that it IS too good to be true. Look closely.
It may be as good as they say it is! The whole world isn't a scam. Often
times folks blame the business for their failure when they know good and
well the blame lies square on their shoulders!
This does not mean you should not be skeptical of a new company that is
not well known. Check them out closely and ask some unbiased folks if
they've heard of them. If it's a well known company that's been around for
a while you are probably OK.
4) First they lied to us about Santa Claus. Then they lied to us about the
Easter Bunny. Then they told us the biggest lie of all?."If you get a college
education you'll get a great job, make lots of money, and live successfully
ever after."
Absolutely no negative reflection on a college education but that just isn't
true. The real money is in business. Oh college is great. I highly recommend
it. I have a degree in nursing myself. You should go to college; but college in
no way assures wealth or success. It doesn't even assure a job!
Not too many jobs allow you to earn $20,000 or more per month. Unless
you are CEO of a billion dollar company. But $20,000 a month has been
accomplished many times with a good network marketing opportunity. When
you hear successful network marketing pros talking earnings of $10,000,
$20,000, or $30,000 often times they are talking monthly! Income like
this does not come by signing up and hoping spillover and downline members
will make you wealthy. It takes a tremendous amount of work. You have to
be a real leader to build a downline that pays that kind of money. But it can
be done.
Network marketing allows you to make a lot of money at something you know
very little about. Network marketing also allows you to stay broke at something
you are an expert at.
Get as much education and as good an education as possible, but don't think
that alone is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
5) NEXT PLEASE!!
Don't beg people to get involved in your business!! There's no one person you
have to have. You've got the whole world to advertise to.
How much time have you got to waste on anyone who is NOT interested. Zero!
If you think they would be a valuable rep in your organization; stick with them till
you get them to look at the business, then let them decide and you go onto
someone else. NEXT!! We are only interested in talking to people interested in
our product, service, or opportunity. This does not apply to everyday life but
it certainly applies in business!
If I'm not interested in what you are offering I can promise you I'll be even
less
interested after your 7th follow-up. Enough said.
Folks the time we are living in offers the greatest opportunity EVER to build
a successful small or home business. The internet has linked the whole world
with the World Wide Web. The number of people available out there to obtain
as customers and/or recruit into business is no less than STAGGERING. And
the REALLY BIG numbers aren't even online yet! If you can get a vision of just
how big what lies before you is and you are willing to work very hard you can
change your life as you never dreamed. You can roll 20 or 30 years of work into
5 or 10 years. It only makes sense you are gonna have to work hard for those
5 or 10 years.
If you want to REALLY succeed in business you've got to have A DIFFERENT
WAY OF THINKING!
Thank You.
MAKES YOU WONDER HOW THESE PEOPLE CAN SURVIVE !!!!!!
  Several years ago, we had an intern who was none too
  secretary and said, "I'm almost out of typing paper.
  What do I do?"  "Just use copier machine paper," the
  secretary told him. With that, the intern took his
  last remaining blank piece of paper, put it  on the
  photocopier and proceeded to make five "blank" copies.
  I was in a car dealership a while ago, when a large
  motor home was towed into the garage.  The front of
  the vehicle was in dire need of repair and the whole
  thing generally looked like an extra in "Twister".  I
  asked the manager what had happened.  He told me that
  the driver had set the "cruise control" and then went
  in the back to make a sandwich.
