Hi Everyone,

Thought I would pass this on as it came in my Winflies update. And it is
about  Yahoo and Geocities.

(5) How much content do community sites "own"?

GeoCities home page builders are finding that before they can
enter the new Yahoo-GeoCities site, which launched today, they
have to agree to new terms of service--including one that some
equate to signing away the rights to their intellectual property.
The term in question gives Yahoo "the royalty-free, perpetual,
irrevocable, nonexclusive and fully sublicensable right and license
to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create
derivative works from, distribute, perform, and display such
content (in whole or part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in
other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later
developed." "Now with the merger [between Yahoo and GeoCities],
my Web site is no longer my own intellectual property, and the
blood, sweat, and tears I put into it is now worthless," Adrean
Clark, a GeoCities user, wrote in an email to CNET News.com. "If
they ever decide to use any of my graphics or personal writings,
they can sell it for their own profit."

I currently use Critical Path, through an

Hi Bogdan and Adlanders:

I am, like Eva, very concerned with that "fine print"
from Yahoo!  I look forward to comments from legal
experts on that one!  My understanding of "intellectual
property" is that YOU are the owner of it and I will
not be giving my rights away by signing a second
contract with Yahoo! even if my Geocities site IS
just a hobby site!

>Hello,

>to increase traffic to our site, search engine submissions, free contests,

Brian, I checked out your site and really like what you are doing
there.  A couple of things that might help you with getting more
visitors:

First, you need some content on your main page.. Bob Massa, the
Search Engine expert has written that search engines are no longer
looking at just the META tag keywords to determine what the site
is about, so those "keyword stuffers" are not going to be getting
a top listing.  Flesh out your paragraph there and let the visitor
know what the benefit is to them of shopping there - unique products
that aren't available anywhere else? better prices? think of some
of them and use them there. Don't forget that you are a stranger
to them and they will be wary of handing out their credit card
number if they don't trust you.  Make sure you offer a guarantee
and tell them how to return items - let them know how simple it
is so they will be more willing to try your products.

Next, you are in an ideal position by being a resident of Alaska
to know about the local scene there.  Make your site more interactive
by putting some of the local events - maybe a calendar of things
happening in the area, the best places to eat and what their
specialty is - do you ever eat out in local restaurants there?
(probably yes!) Do reviews of the food and service - those places
will love the attention and will probably advertise with you later!
What hotels are best?  Are there any Bed & Breakfasts there? What
sort of tours are available?  How about a small ticker that shows
the current local temperature? Get the idea?

Use some photos of the scenery - thumbnails maybe and only one or
two on a page - to let those in other countries and US see what
they are missing.  I realize you aren't trying to get them to
visit, only to buy (*smile*) but offer them something free for
visiting your site- such as information.

To get some ideas, look at some other sites like tourist bureaus
(I hear Richmond, VA has an incredible site) that offer that sort
of information.

Your source code uses a tag <NO FRAMES> but I did not see a closing
tag for </NO FRAMES> - I did just glance at it, so I may have
missed that.  Run the site through something like Website Garage
to check the validity of the code.  Your META tag keywords are repetitive
which could cause search engines to consider it "spamming" and they
will ignore the site altogether.  Go to META Tag Analyzer and META
Tag help and get your site checked for free at:
http://www.scrubtheweb.com/abs/meta-check.html

When I clicked onto the Shopping page I saw a completely different
color background... keep your site consistent with the colors if
you can to give it continuity.

Remember that you need to have a consistent marketing maintenance
plan going on all the time.  You can get a FREE copy of an article
that Jim Daniels wrote which shows you daily, weekly, monthly
step-by-step things to do for maintaining your marketing at
mailto:marketmaint@zinfo.net?subject=adland .  I use it
religiously - I keep a text folder on my desktop to track what
I do each week and it makes me "compete"  with my previous
week's activities.  That has quadrupled my visitors in the last month!

Set up your own free autoresponder at http://www.zinfo.net and
put a report on local real estate or something in it - offer
the FREE report on your main page so that people can request it -
great way for you to get e-mail addresses to use for sending
out specials you are featuring! Mention at the bottom of the
autoresponder message that you will be doing this and note
that they can remove their address at any time.

Sorry for taking up so  much space :)  I wish you the best
success with your business!

Best regards,
Terri Robinson

From: Eve Paludan <intrapreneur@inficad.com>
Subject: Review Site alaskamade

Dear Brian:
Here are some suggestions, not only to get traffic to your site, but to
get people to buy your products:
1. NAVIGATION. Overhaul the navigation of your site. The design is
cumbersome. A customer has to load FIVE pages before they can see a
picture of a product and actually order something! Put photo links of
different products on your front page, call them featured products, and
have them link directly to order pages. I would get rid of the frames,
too, if you can. The top frame uses too much "real estate" that could be
utilized for product pictures. Your site's entryway has a lot of
graphics to decorate the site, instead of product photos.
2. Add META tags. You have no META tags for your index.html page or you
can forget the search engines. Make some online, for free at:
http://www.zoran.net/olwt/htm_meta_mach.asp    And after you upload the
page with the META tags, then check them for compliance with META Medic
at the bottom of the page on:
http://www.northernwebs.com/set/setsimjr.html   Then get some AddWeb GOLD
Version search engine submission software and use it. I have a whole
article on META tags and search engines here and my formula has paid off
by getting me high in search engine results of major search engines.
See: http://royaltyfreeart.com/number1.html
3. EMAIL WITH CAUTION. Comply with your boss' suggestion to send email,
but do it carefully. No spam. I use FFA Blaster software mainly to post
my 85 character unclassified ad to 10,000+ FFA link pages (free for all
link pages) but I ALSO use it to send out press releases to targeted
editors and webmasters who routinely accept press releases and reprint
the news in them. I never, never, email to a mailing list that someone
wants to sell me, or even give me. I visit media sites that pertain to
my topic and find the names and email addresses of their editors and
webmasters. Then I make my own targeted list. (If you don't have time to
do this, http://www.newsbureau.com will send out your press release to
1200 general news media outlets for $225 and their client list contains
Microsoft and IBM.)
4. REPRINTABLE press releases and articles. Write press releases and
upload them free at some news sites. Then anyone can reprint them in
their media. It is even better exposure than emailing. I also post
re-printable articles to the gallery at
http://www.e-zinez.com/gallery/index.html and have gotten personal
responses from my articles posted there.
5.START YAHOOING! I post FREE classified ads at
http://classifieds.yahoo.com and get several dozen inquiries a week from
them. Another cool way to use the FREE services at Yahoo is to put
something in one of their auctions, with a picture. I recommend selling
your "Unique Items" at the Yahoo auction. One week that I advertised an
auction for my site datemovie.com domain name for $10,000, I got
hundreds more hits than usual. (Course you probably want to set the
stakes much higher, for your domain name, since this is a real auction,
and you might actually get a bidder!)
6. TRADE LINKS AND BANNERS. Trade links with some high traffic sites. I
have a web graphics business and joined a banner swap at clipart.com,
and they send me about 100 surfers per day!
7. AFFILIATE. One thing I have not yet done, but it is on the horizon is
making my own affiliate program for my CD-rom products at
http://www.royaltyfreeart.com . Instructions for doing it are here at
one of my favorite affiliate sites:
http://cashpile.com/success/index.html I also joined
http://www.linkshare.com and have not yet made much money from it, but
it has enormous potential and I don't have to stock any merchandise, so
the only risk is my time. Likewise affiliate with http://www.amazon.com
.I noticed you don't have any books on your site. I have direct links
set up for the 15% commission at my Arizona bookstore
http://www.goldcanyonaz.com/books.html  and am getting hits.

I used http://anaconda.net/ap_amazon.shtml to help me set up my Amazon
links and just did a search and replace to change their affiliate code
to mine in the HTML code, and I had a store with 2,000 books built in 2
hours! You can do the same thing by clicking here:
http://anaconda.net/cgi-local/anaconda.pl?template=ap_templateamazon.html&keyword=alaska&Submit=Search

(I will probably buy their Anaconda.net software because their online
demo version is so great! Caution: Do not go to Anaconda.com by mistake,
as it is a porn site!)

8. DIVERSIFY! Offer your products at other sites where you can get a
free spot. Put up gateway pages to your site on free sites that allow
you to either redirect traffic automatically, or act as a front door to
your store when surfers click on a product picture.

Well, I hope I have helped you a bit. Been a long time since I posted,
but I read every word of this newsletter and can't wait for the next
issue! --

Eve Paludan

From: Bob Cortez <bobak@eagle.ptialaska.net>
Subject: Review Site alaskamade

Greetings All,

When I spotted a fellow Alaskan (Camai Brian) on the list looking for a
site review and help, I just had to take the time to check it out and respond.

If you didn't have a chance to check out the site
(http://www.alaskamade.com), take a look now because Brian has some truly
unique and wonderful Alaskan products on display.

Now on with the review and some suggestions.

Overall I think the site is laid out well, but I think you should
reconsider the use of frames for navigation.  They are hampering your
listings in the search engines, make it difficult for visitors to bookmark
interior pages, and on small (15") screens the top navigation bar takes up
too much room and you have to do a lot of scrolling to see the products.

I would also suggest adding more content rather than product information.
Alaska is an exotic location to most people around the world.  There is a
'mystique' about this great land that you need to capitalize on.  Tell
people about the artists, the culture, the facts and myths.  Let them
experience Alaska Online, get them involved with learning more, entice them
into visiting and returning often.  (the more often they return, the more
likely they will buy)

Your opening page needs more text to draw the visitor into the rest of the
site (this will help with your search engine rankings as well)  How about a
special of the week?  Artist of the week?  Alaska Location of the Week?
Give them something to see and do while they are there.

Have you identified who your 'model customer' is?  Why are they interested
in Alaska?  What interests them, have they visited before, would they like
to, who else has access to your model customers?  Travel Agents? Tour
Operators? Art Collectors/dealers?  Have you considered starting an
affiliate program so that other Alaska related sites could help market your
site and profit from doing so?

Are you advertising off-line?  Using publicity releases?  Any of your
artists done anything newsworthy?  Won an award?  Created something unique,
the first time offered?  Have an interesting angle behind a piece that is
currently for sale?  Your oldest/youngest artist?

Best wishes to you Brian, and stick to your guns.  Don't let the 'boss' go
the spam route... it is a sure fire recipe for disaster.  No matter what he
may be told by those hawking lists and services.

Will You Be Bitten By The Bug?
By: David Seitz Copyright (c) 1999 All Rights Reserved

I decided I would get to work on some of the much needed
maintenance my LAN (local area network) needed and ran into
a few problems that may affect many of you out there. This
is very important to any one with a windows machine no matter
how new your system is. There are several unexpected problems
that you can run into so please pay close attention to this
article. After all it's much better to be safe now then
sorry latter! There is a nasty bug on it's way to you
and it's about to bite.

I do keep back ups of all my important data and regularly
scan and defragment the hard drives on my systems. The real
maintenance I needed to attend to was all the leftover
files from installing and un-installing software, bit's of
left over data, internet junk, etc, etc. While I was digging
through my systems I came across a file I had downloaded
and forgot about to scan for year 2000 problems. I have
three newer systems and left the software sit because I
was sure my new system would be safe from any kind of Y2K
problems after all they were made this year.... surprise
surprise..

I installed the software on one of the systems and found
out the internal clock would fail at the turn of the
millennium! The BIOS was fine but if I had let this go
I would have been in for a very unpleasant surprise come
January 1st! This was a total shock to me and can only
imagine how many other people out there will unknowingly
have the same exact problem. I ran the software through
the rest of the systems on the network and two failed!

Many of the software packages floating around the net
will check and upgrade your computers BIOS which is good
but what happens when your internal clock fails? Also,
what happens when there is a leap year problem in 2001?
Your computers compatibility with the year 2000 should
be your highest priority right now! The longer you put it
off the more likely you are to avoid this task altogether.
Take a few minutes out of your day and download a free scan
for your system. I have put up a page for you to download
the software I used for my systems and I highly recommend
it! It will quickly install on your system and scan both
your BIOS and internal clock for all Y2K related problems
including leap year. I have searched for and downloaded
several Y2K software packages and many of them fall short.
Many do not scan your internal clock and many do not
include any leap year fix which means even if your computer
is year 2000 compatible it could still possibly fail on
Jan. 1st 2001.

The software is simple to install and will scan your system
for all Y2K problems. You can use it on old 286, 386, 486
etc. systems and the software will fix any Y2K problems
it finds. I have a few software program links that you can
download and scan your computer systems. I used the guardian
for my systems but feel free to try one of the others.
http://www.associatesearch.com/y2k.htm

Take the time today to scan your system and get it out
of the way before your kicking yourself in the rear latter!

Title: I Want The Day Off

So you want a day off. Let's take a look at what you are asking for.

There are 365 days per year available for work. There are 52 weeks per
year in which you already have 2 days off per week, leaving 261 days
available for work.

Since you spend 16 hours each day away from work, you have used up 170
days, leaving only 91 days available.

You spend 30 minutes each day on coffee break which counts for 23 days
each year, leaving only 68 days available.

With a 1 hour lunch each day, you used up another 46 days, leaving
only 22 days available for work.

You normally spend 2 days per year on sick leave. This leaves you only
20 days per year available for work.

We are off 5 holidays per year, so your available working time is down
to 15 days.

We generously give 14 days vacation per year which leaves only 1 day
available for work and I'll be damned if you are going to take that
day off!
