A note to these people... Bogdan has created a wonderful, interactive

the digest, because all you do is make people hesitant to post to it.

If you need places to advertise, please just post to the digest and ask
for help.   I, personally, would be happy to respond by giving you an
entire list of places that you can advertise - free.   Thanks!

Note from Editor.

I don't know if those who spam contributors to this list, realize how much time
it takes to maintain, build and run discussion list like this.  You should be
ashamed of yourself if  you are doing this. I receive daily about 300 spam
messages where 90% goes to waste basket before I read them and remaining
9% after I see subject message and maybe 1% get chances to get me to read
one or two sentences before they are deleted. Adland Digest was created to
bypass all those who are just making noise and through selective effort provide
useful and informative content. If you spam and you are on this list, you should
go and read archives where there was a lot of discussion about it and try to
learn something http://softfornet.com/archives/

If anybody subscribed to Adland Digest gets spammed and believes that this is
due to your postings, please forward this spam message to me and in case this
person is on my list, and such incident happens more than once, she or he will
be  emoved. I'm doing this anyway to each subscriber  who sends spam to me
right after mailing was sent.

                                        ----===(*)===-----

Site reviews are becoming part of this list and  it seems like we are getting
more request for better  quality sites lately. Although quality is good sign I'm
noticing that expectations of site owners is to get site review and get marks
on that. When we started that idea , under  "site reviews" we had in mind
feedback. Give help  to those who had problems or issues with their web sites.
Things like navigation, load time, meta tags,  were supposed to be tested and
feedback given to the owner.
Again "Feedback"  not   marks. Those who are doing reviews are just nice
people who are taking the time and check the site of other list-fellows.
So, when you are asking for review think (Feedback). When you request
Feedback you have to specify your problem and  describe purpose of your site.
Please don't say . "Here is my site . It is about .... Tell me  what you think."
I won't include anymore requests which won't have clear objectives for feedback.

Except for today.

Betty, while I have never had this happen to  me, I can surely
sympathize with how you are feeling right now.

The positive side to it is  that people like that, who want all
the work done for them and steal other's work, will not stay in
business for long.  Integrity in business is the bottom line -
if someone doesn't have it, it won't be long before their
subscribers recognize their newsletter for what it is:  Just
another ploy to separate them from their money.  Personally,
from the bit of writing style that you included, I would say
that the very first newsletter the person sends out will be
enough to turn a lot of people off!

You can have an attorney to send a notice to this person if
you want to do that.  What he is doing is blatantly copying
and infringing on your intellectual property.  Be sure to keep
every letter that you have sent to him asking him to stop this
and every letter that he has sent back to you.  The attorney
will want those.

In the long run, you will prosper for your willingness to  "give"
before you receive!

who stole her stuff and acted like she was in the wrong for asking about
it. I hope this guy is reading this because I'm sure I'm not the only
who would say to this guy, "#*%@!".
Betty Ann has helped me more than any other webmaster and I'd like to
publicly thank her. She has taken the time to put together several
emails to me to help me with my business. NO CHARGE!! I offered. This is
my chance to repay her.
Her articles are fresh and informative and if she's only doing this
part time she is doing a heck of a job!! Her newsletters are always on
time and her replies to individual emails are ASAP. Not only are they
replies but they supply information. Not just,"Yeah, thanks for writing,
we are currently discussing this. Go review the past newsletters." Betty
makes you feel special. THANK YOU Betty.

Hi Bogdan and Adlanders:

In Issue #114 ,
Betty Ann <BettyAnn@onlines.com> writes for
ideas and thoughts about dealing with a copy-
right theft and general all around bad guy.

Here are sites with good information on
copyrights and intellectual property:
US Patent & Trademark Office - http://www.uspto.gov/
(c) Intellectual Property - http://www.kindone.com/html/ip.html

I'd give him the benefit of doubt and believe
that he is just ignorant of copyright infringe-
ment laws on the Internet.   Send him a gentle,
but firm e-mail with the proper legal references
and links and he will stop.

If he doesn't, have a lawyer friend send him an
e-mail stating that a letter will be going to
his ISP and any other appropriate entity if he
doesn't cease within 3 days.  SEND his ISP the
notice.  They may have better success than anyone
if he values his account.  Most ISP's have a
legal use clause in their terms of service.

Good luck,
Melody T Vargas,

<Betty Ann Dilemma - What to do??>
Well, I am not sure what to tell you-I *believe* that you *can* use
someone else's stuff LEGALLY even if you only change the spelling of one
word!
But this IS morally wrong, and also the problem is that if they get
a name for theirself-and then do bad-then you come across some of the
same people...it will look bad on you thinking it is the same. (i.e.. I
run a daycare in my home. I call it 'Lil Tykes Christian Learning Center
another opened in the last couple years calling theirs Little
Tikes.....which not only I think they could get in trouble with the toy
company on that, BUT I have had people some interview with me, then when
they see my policy see my name, and get a *look* on their face and say
"oh, I didn't realize this was little tikes". I ALWAYS ask if whatever
they heard was about Lil Tykes CHRISTIAN LEARNING CENTER. I tell them I
on PURPOSE made this our name because I do not JUST baby-sit-I TEACH
them. My children know how to read write and spell their name address
and phone number before 4 years old-they also learn 1 Bible verse a
week, and learn respect for others and adults (i.e. yes ma'am no sir,
etc)
Anyway, it does make me mad, but I honestly sometimes think just
turning the other cheek and working harder at yours is better-because
also if you do push it, since they have ALREADY lied and stolen etc,
what else will they do to try to ruin you? You may be better off leaving
it alone-and don't have contact with them anymore, and just work at
getting yours great. This other person WILL get paid back for what he
has done someday. I am a TRUE believer in what goes around comes around
.... and....you will reap what you sow.
Good luck to you!

From: Linda Caroll <linda@swdomains.com>

Hello again Bogdan and Fellow Subscribers:

In Adland Digest #114, Yuri writes:

Our site www.kitto.com is selling three beautifully illustrated original
children's books. I believe one has to give to the customer us much
as one can and our site surely represents this belief.  We have modest
traffic: an average of 150 visitors a week, but no sales at all. There
got to be a reason for this, for there is a reason for everything. I just
can't put my finger on it. If you could just glance at the site and tell me
what do you think is our problem.  Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello Yuri:

I spent a great deal of time at your website and would like to respond to
your request for help.  I would like to start by saying that your
illustrations
are fantastic.. very nice!  My compliments to your illustrator!

I noticed immediately that the images, while very beautiful, take a very
long time to load.  I ran a few analysis programs on your site, and here
is some of the results of the tests that I ran:

Your Load Lime:
159.86 seconds on 14.4 connection
80.94 seconds on 28.8 connection
42.2 seconds on 56K connection
19.8 seconds on ISDN connection

We do a lot of site critiquing and re-design, and I always tell people
that their site should NEVER take more than 30 seconds to load at a
28.8 connection speed.  20 seconds is even better!  Internet statistics
indicate that at 30 seconds you start to lose customers, and fast... at
a rate of 10% for every additional 10 seconds load time over 30 seconds.

Your page loads this slowly because you have eight files that are over
10K each - on the main page alone.  Then, to add to your troubles,
most of your pages have the same problems... large files that cause
slow load time.  My guess is that people are sticking around for a
while, but get tired of the load time and leave before they get to the
ordering stage.

If people DO stay around long enough to go to the order page, I
noticed that your site says "click here for secure order", but when
I clicked on the order link, the page that loaded was not a
secure page.  I read the order form, and it does say that the person
will be forwarded to the secure page to enter credit card information,
but I think that perhaps when people load the order form and see
that it is not secured, it may make them hesitant... and a moments
hesitation is all it takes to make them click away and not "buy".

To improve the performance of your website, I would suggest
that you compress or dice your images further so that there are
no files exceeding 10K... and under 5K is even better.  This
will do wonders for your load time.  Also, if you place the entire
order form on a secure page, I think it will increase the comfort
level on the part of the shopper and may help you get sales.

Also, advertising statistics indicate that less than 10% of the
people that come to our site "buy", unless you have developed
a rapport with people, so getting more traffic would also help.
If you would like more information on how you can get more
traffic, please send me an email and I will suggest a couple of
good resources that would probably help you out with that, too.

If this critique has been of some help, may I post it on our
free ctitique page?  This could also offer you some additional
exposure to your site, as we refer people to this page quite
often and it gets good traffic.  The page is at:
http://www.bizwizard.com/sitehelp

Best of luck!

Sincerely,
Linda Caroll

Dear Bogden and Adlanders:

I only had a moment to take a peek at Yuri's site, but here is
my first observation:

>------------------------------------------------------------
>***** Every Child is born to Succeed at http://www.kitto.com
>------------------------------------------------------------

Yuri, I agree that the pages are beautifully illustrated and I
am sure people like viewing the pages, however, I feel you are
not making sales because you don't tell your viewers that they
need to buy the book.

It is not enough to show the pretty pictures and a bit of text.
You need to tell them that this is a book that their children
"must" have. We all want our children to be successful and If I
can believe that this book will help stimulate my child to move
in that direction, I would be more inclined to purchase.

I hope this helps.

Review of:Addicted to Love, Dating, etc.
>site from the digest  #114
>http://www.philipov.com/mgirls.htm

Marilou, I went to see your site and LOVE the background!
You know exactly who your target market is, and you are offering
them many other things that they might be interested in seeing -
each thing chosen with them in mind.  This is one of the key
ingredients in marketing successfully - knowing everything about
what your target market wants and making sure you give it to them
or make it available to them.

I found the site loaded very quickly - I have cable modem though,
so my perceptions will of course be different than someone with
a slow modem.  There seemed to be one image not loading - at the
bottom of the window it kept saying 0% of 9k ..but I could not
find ANY image showing that wasn't loading.

Great job on your ALT tags! You have used the keywords there to
help your ratings in the search engines and that is always a good
thing  :)  There was something in the META tags that I am not
sure of the purpose or action of that said:
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Expires" CONTENT="Fri, 9 July 1999 1:00:00 GMT">
If it affects anything, perhaps you might want to go in and change
the date of that expiration *smile*

Overall I found it to be a beautiful site that told me immediately
what you wanted me to do!  Good job!

>

This really is a remarkably well done site!

>From: yuri <ramapress@kitto.com>
>and tell me what do you think is our problem.  Your advice is greatly

Yuri, it is a beautiful site!  Perhaps a problem is that you don't
tell the visitor right on your front page exactly what it is you
want them to do?  Make it obvious:  "buy these books to make your
child succeed" and put the links to the order pages in a more
visible place!  In today's fast-click Internet world, you don't
want the person to just browse through looking for something
that they aren't sure exactly what it is.  You want to get them
right to where you can help them  to solve their problem, whatever
it is!

Best regards,
Terri Robinson

<http://www.kitto.com/>
Your email gif logo needs to be bigger. They say most viewers view with
800*600 so if you do not like this setting, at least check your site by
it. The site is very cute and nicely laid out. You say to click on the 3
doors to ready a story-sounds like each door is a different story-but
you actually have biographies on one, stories on another, and ordering
on another. Where you read the story have words under the next page, and
back page-"Click here to read the next page". If you can make your
sounds cut off after they run 2-3 times, over and over is kinda
irritating if you end up staying on one page while you explain or read
it to your child. On the order page-I am assuming there is supposed to
be a picture of the author-didn't show-just an x. Do the books make the
sounds like on the website? If so state that. If not make a small
disclaimer at the bottom  somewhere. I wouldn't show the WHOLE book-just
most or 1/2 of it-then have when you click the next page say "To read
the rest of this great kittos book order here!" or something.

THE GODZILLA SYNDROME
by Eldon Sarte

Getting involved in online communities is probably one of
the best ways to "network" on the Net. It can also be the
quickest way to ruin your rep and business. Involvement
isn't the problem; it's what you DO and SAY when you
mingle.

Don't ever forget this rule: When mingling online, ALWAYS
BE NICE. Never lose your temper, be nasty, or publicly
humiliate another person...even if you're right! There are
many characters out there, some you'll feel are just
asking for it. Resist the temptation to knock the person
down a peg. Always.

Where could such a mingling take place? Practically
everywhere nowadays. Chat channels. Message boards. E-mail
discussion lists. You name it, wherever you can publicly
communicate with other people, real time or not, you're
mingling.

Be careful because it's PUBLIC. You really don't know how
many people are reading your words. How many see you throw
tantrums. How many have observed your vitriolic wit as you
put down that jerk who dared claim he knew better than
you. How many "lurkers" are out there, watching, absorbing
your BAD VIBES that they will NEVER forget?

Human nature. Pain we remember always. We may forget, even
ignore, the good Samaritan, but the person who HURTS us or
we see hurting others, we remember. And usually refuse to
associate with again.

Here's why I call it the Godzilla Syndrome. I'll publicly
admit that I ENJOYED this mega-flop of a movie. It took a
while to get to see it; the reviews stunk, TV comedians
ridiculed it; Toys 'R' Us even fire saled its Godzilla
merchandise. Fortunately, I live within walking distance
of a theater. Boredom, coupled with an urge to munch on
movie popcorn, and I shelled out the $14 to see it (I
dragged my wife along)...

..and I LIKED it! So did my wife, who's Belgian and
didn't even know what a Godzilla was. But she didn't meet
the lizard we all knew. No, this nouveau reptile was
nothing like the clumsy "I think that's a man in a rubber
suit" Godzilla of my childhood. Waxing nostalgic, I missed
that old monster. For a moment, I was sad to see it gone,
maybe even sad to realize that I had aged. Sad as in PAIN.

Which is why I think it bombed. It elicited the wrong
emotions -- bad vibes -- and the reviewers just couldn't
get over it. Today's reviewers were ALL raised on the old
Godzilla. In pain, guess what they did. Yup. Tell everyone
else. They shared their bitterness with all of us,
influencing us to the point where it was dumb to even
consider watching it. The backlash was so severe, I doubt
that many panning it had even seen it.

But the movie they so cruelly picked apart sure wasn't
what I saw.

Which is the point. Hurt someone, anyone, publicly and
EVERYONE feels it, not just the target. And they'll never
forget. They'll even share it with those who weren't
there, without saying a word! Online communities have an
interesting way of shunning pain-inflicters: the silent
treatment. People stop replying to your posts. And you can
bet that others sense this.

The weird part is this happens even if you're in the
right! People just don't like pain. Period. And they hate
people who dish it out even more.

I know. You can probably tell that diplomacy isn't my
thing. Argumentative and critical? Heck yeah. My name's
mud in some online communities. On a personal level, the
only thing you can do is wait it out. They'll start
chatting with you again soon enough. But business-wise? I
think the damage is permanent. They really don't forget.

So be nice. Be helpful. If attacked for whatever reason
(some users are just into that sort of thing), don't
reciprocate in kind; remain civil and professional. Others
see what's happening, and they most certainly do read
between the lines. They'll respect you for being calm and
in control.

And they'll probably want to do business with you!

======================Joke of the Day=====================
Joke provided by
Laurie Delk <delk@columbia.total-web.net>

An old man was sitting on a bench in the mall when a young man
with spiked hair came over & sat down beside him. The boy's hair
was yellow & green & orange & purple. He had black makeup around
his eyes. the old man just stared at him. The boy said What's the matter,
old man, haven't you ever done anything wild in your life? The old man
answered "Well yes, actually, I have, I once got drunk and had sex with a
parrot.
I was just wondering if you were my son.
