Subject: Have you heard of Third Voice yet?

Dear Bogdan,
Have you heard of Third Voice yet?
http://www.thirdvoice.com
It is a free program that will change how webmasters view their sites and
change their pages.
This program, when installed with IE 4 & 5, lets the user post a message
about anything on any web page. Unless you have Third Voice installed, you
will not see what people are saying about your site, whether good or bad,
complimentary or spammish.
I recommend that every serious webmaster, ready to keep appearances of their
website up to snuff, download and install Third Voice and investigate their
website using IE 4 or 5.
Get in the water before it is a big wave that sweeps you under!
I have designated my site aLoveLinksPlus http://www.alovelinksplus.com a
Third Voice Friendly Site and I am encouraging my visitors to download and
use the program at my site in a positive manner.
The dangers of ignoring this program are self-evident once you take the time
to investigate it.
I would continue but I look forward to some active discussions about Third
Voice on this list.
Thanks,
Robert Lee

From: Jerry Garner <casinonow@hotmail.com>
Subject:  Freebies will build new traffic

I have said it before, and I'll say it again, the best way to produce high
quality web traffic is to give something away for free, be it a tangible
item or a service that you are offering. For example, a couple of issues
back I wrote a post on the subject and mentioned the free cd that I give
away on my site. I also mentioned it in postings that I contributed to about
5 other digests. The result was that my traffic soared and within that one
week I filled more requests for free cd's than what I had in the previous
month.

This prompted me to start a new experiment, to see how well a free service
could be used to get more traffic on my affiliate programs. Since my
particular website is based on the casino industry, I made the "face" of
this project a slot club. Basicly each time a person visits a sponsor site
they get 1 point. When enough points are accumulated, they can be redeemed
for free merchandise (casino merchadise in my case, you can make it whatever
you want). The result: after 2 weeks of promoting the project, I now have
over 1000 registered users who return to my page almost daily to click on my
links. It is a win-win situation. They spend a couple of minutes a day
surfing links and get free merchandise, while I collect revenues from the
click-thru programs they are surfing. Sure, I have to spend money on the
prizes and on shipping them, but I have set my points level carefully, and
barring any type of cheating I should make as much money for myself as what
it costs for the prizes.

It seems to be the perfect situation for anyone who has tons of affiliate
programs that no one seems to be visiting. I would encourage any of you to
stop by my site and see how it works. While you are there, don't forget to
request your free cd. These don't cost me anything, so I just love giving
them away. I also give away a complimentary issue of Casino Player Magazine
to everyone who joins my mailing list.

Thank you,

Jerry Garner

Subject: Your opinion

Hello Bogdan.
First
Last week I received an E-mail from somebody that I didn't know.
Te copy of this E-mail you can find it here below.
http://softfornet.com/archives/spanish.htm
What do you think about this kind of advertisement, and where is the trick. How
can they pay all the people who are sharing the program? It is written in
Spanish, but if you go to the web that is linked in this massage they will
explain
you in English how about.
What do you think, does it will be giving money and lower down the cost  made
on the web?

The second question is that in your latest newsletter my website review request
wasn't possible because the page did not came up. Last week my server did had
some problems but they are solved. Please can you give it an other try?
<http://www.angelfire.com/biz/NEBECO>

And last, why aren't you translating your newsletter into Spanish. I think there
will be a big interes because I think that it is the best and most human
newsletter I have found on the web.
The problem is that here in Spain a lot of people don't speak, read or write in
English. So if I tell them about your newsletter they aren't interested because
they cant read it and also because there is a strong spanish language lobby.
Those people who are saying that there must be more spanish stuff on the net
but they don't want to spend a dime on it.

thank you and have a nice week

To your question  "why aren't you translating your newsletter into Spanish?"

Adland Digest is free publication and is only  supported by     sponsors
which is not even covering the time which is being spent  on putting all of the
mailings together. Translating of it would be  bigger job  than creating of
original English version, unless you know people who would be interested in
doing this on volunteer bases. I could maintain Spanish subscriber list and
mail Spanish version of digest.

Subject:Need for Affiliate management software.

Hello!
I started making webpages for fun on the net about 2 1/2 years ago. When
friends started complimenting me I thought I'd try learning how to make more
professional looking pages in the hopes of earning some extra cash.
Many pages later I now have a small gambling directory and am being
approached by casinos asking how much it would cost them to advertise on my
site.
I was flattered and amazed. (my site is a simple one that consists of the
casinos I play at and enjoy) I run the usual affiliate programs but it had
never crossed my mind to start running a paid advertising program.
I noticed quite a few of the gambling directories have a "pay per impression"
program. What kind of software or scripting is needed to manage that?
I am curious if any webmasters on the mailing have had this situation arise.
If so, what are the factors one would would look at in order to determine a
price?
Thanks!!
Sincerely,

Hi Bogdan and Adlanders!

What a great article last issue, Bogdan! A great
reminder to us that the Internet is an open book
in more ways than one! A sometimes unintentional
remark can turn out to be very harmful, as it was
to the movie Godzilla.

Steve, you have a really timely idea with this!  I looked at
the wedding pictures and was really impressed with your
backgrounds, and the picture quality was stunning!

I would suggest that you move your benefit statements right
up to the top and make them bulleted to draw attention to
what you will do for them.

ie:           Share your memories the creative way with Digital Vision
>share your best wedding photos with your own text
etc. <grin>  You can also put your pictures through a gif optimizer
that will reduce the colors a bit and resize it for you.  There is
a really good one at Media Builder:
http://www.gifoptimizer.com/index.html

I have seen this make a ton of difference in the sales for many
different types of businesses.  You certainly do have a product
that should touch your visitors on an emotional level!  And to
be able to do Tutorials and catalogs is even better!

Make sure that you tell them what you want them to do - BUY!
*grin*  And make it easy for them to get to your order page.

I wish you the best of success!

Best regards,
Terri

Dear Bogdan, Tim and Adlanders

In response to Tim Sanders request, I have a couple of comments.
Upon entering the speaker.htm page (under construction), the
first thing one notices is the use of the word "I" (6 times in
the first 6 lines). I then decided to check out a completed
page, and counted the following:
"I" 23 times
"My" 16 times
"I'm" 2 times
"me" 1 time
Total references to self - 42 times

"You or Your" 15 times

All pages visited had all text centered. People read from left
to right. Also there were a lot of run on sentences and
paragraphs. Actually, people do not like to read at all, but
will do so when text is broken down into bite size pieces. Tim,
you need to refrain from so much wordiness, get away from the
me, myself and I and start thinking "YOU YOU YOU".

Also you made a comment that the page was best viewed at
800x600. This is very true. When viewed at 640x480, however, the
dark text runs over into the dark background in the left column
and it totally lost. According to the most recent stats from my
site, there are approx. 23% that will view your site at this
lower resolution. These folks also need your consideration.

You mentioned that your site was graphics intense ("needed for
the intended content"). Actually the graphics seems to load
fairly quickly. However this could be improved further with the
elimination of the animation that accompanies your speakers and
in my humble opinion strengthen the professionality of your
site.

Ok, you've been picked on enough. Let's see what others have to
say.

My site is ready for a review but I would like advice along with the review.
I am an Artist/Author/Sculptor and have a list catering to Artists on
marketing and web site design tips plus a free bi-monthly newsletter for
Artists and Writers.  The archive for the newsletter is up on my site.  I
offer free booklets which I hope enrich people's lives.  My problem is
finding ways for myself and other Artists on my list to sell their work on
the Internet.  Art is not a "necessary" item so I need suggestions on how to
target to "buying" consumers.  Also, most Artists are on a tight budget and
do not have the money for merchant accounts.  We need to know ways for
people to buy online without upfront costs (if there is such an place on the
net). I know this is the major failing on my site.  My site can be seen at
http://www.trabar.com .  Any help you can give on either issue would be
greatly appreciated.  I will share your ideas with my list.  Thank you.

Is Internet a right market place?
By Esad Jaganjac

My first contact with marketing was a long time ago when I started to sell
double glazing products. I've been working as a sales consultant for a
well-known UK Company. The company had nice marketing tactics, commonly refereed
to as the "marketing mix" or the 4Ps": very attractive products, affordable
prices, real place and very interesting promotion. Promotion was described with
two shortcut words: CAPO and KIS, that is to say:
Contact-Appointment-Presentation-Order, and second one: Keep- It-Simple. I
remember, when armed with these tactics  I started to knock on other peoples
doors trying to achieve planed number of daily contacts. And indeed, on the
first day I made 30 contacts with people and five with dogs and finally ending
up in hospital. Now I know that was, actually , the worst kind of 'spaming'.
The lesson was -'never push too hard'.  Nevertheless, I didn't give up easily.
I've been working on improving the first impression and how to avoid dogs. So,
next time whenever I saw that some human being opens the door, I used to put in
his hands a nice brochure telling him "THIS IS FOR YOU", before he managed to
speak out: "NOT INTERESTED". By the time he was looking in an unexpected GIFT, I
managed to tell him a crucial massage: "We are offering a FREE quotation with no
OBLIGATION …bla-bla-bla". This tactic did work.

Now, when I am setting up my Internet business, I see many similarities with a
real market place such as: online traffic (contacts), web site design (first
impression), free gifts, etc. The question is what is different and what is the
best marketing tactic for virtual market place such as Internet. For the moment,
I have disregarded many marketing secrets, mega cash opportunities, killer
tactics, etc., that are coming to my email box every day, trying to work out my
own research based on basics and my experience.

If you look back to basics you will probably find some nice definitions for
marketing such as: "Marketing is the sum of activities involved in directing the
flow of goods and services from producers to consumers".  Then you can find that
the marketing process is divided into a strategic and a tactical phase. The
strategic phase has three components--segmentation, targeting, and positioning.
Then, the well known story about marketing mix (tactics), followed by
evaluating, controlling and revising the marketing process to achieve your
company's objectives.

I am sure that all of these basics are absolutely applicable to an Internet
based company.  There are some new elements and differences such as:

- Your promotion depends on mercury of search engines. You can overcome this
with a huge advertising campaign if you have available budget.
-  You don't have an ordinary sales force, but rater you have to relay on your
potential affiliate program, if you have one.
- Your need to provide a real commercial transaction online (sales), which is
effectively possible only if you commercially upgrade your site (e-commerce).
- Even, if you did work out marketing strategic and a tactical phase properly,
there is a question of an effective presentation which depends on quality of
your web site design and maintenance, speed of downloading, first impression,
etc.

In other words, these are the reasons why a huge rate of Internet small
businesses does not succeed. A small business just can't afford time and money
resources for this (except a small number of them who succeeded because of
excellent products or  brilliant targeting).

If all of this is a true, where is the hope for an individual webmaster or a
small business? There is no magic formula for that but there is an opportunity
based around a well known fact : "if you can't win alone then join the winning
team".  Currently, the common trend in developing internet business is a joint
effort of groups of people in creating internet corporation by sharing the same
ideas and resources (time, money, knowledge, etc). If Corporation succeeds, the
individual members have success as well. You can find on internet many 'pre
lunch' companies, that are looking for dedicated, energetic and motivated people
ready to join in creating an internet business, more often based on developing
very good new ideas for the new century, with Hi-Tech and Hi-Touch strategies.
Your opportunity is there if you join and contribute before they become fully
operational. After that it is too late and you have to look somewhere else.
