From: "Fiona Heares" <fionah@albatross.co.nz>
Subject:  Freebies will build new traffic

In response to Jerry Garner's tips for marketing. Re Michael Indorf Jnr

I visited Michael's site. (nice site and nicely laid out btw, Michael.. we
would be happy to exchange links with you:) ) he is selling product and
specifically gift/craft type products. We also sell gifts and crafts and
have tried the opt-in lists for both our own site http://www.jofi.net and
another couple of sites we are now marketing for. http://www.beer.co.nz &
http://www.muchsuccess.com/freenewsletters.htm

We found that joining these lists was not really beneficial for our own
site. These people are just not interested in purchasing gifts and crafts
over then net. In the first week we recieved an increase of hits but no
sales resulted and after that the hits dropped away also.  What I do now is
join up for a week unsubscribe for a couple of months then join again for
another week and so on.
The lists were more beneficial for the Best Newsletters & Beer In Mind sites
which resulted in increased hits and a few sales.
May I make a suggestion? I noticed you have handmade "office products"
perhaps if you targetted your advertising of these products to the lists
that Jerry suggested you may see some results.
Also I would look for more targetted advertising opportunities. Find craft
related and gift related sites. eg. crafters net, Craft USA, look up
bulletin boards and try to help out with advice etc. Sign guests books all
over the net!
Do you produce an ezine/newsletter? Fill it with tips and tricks, make it a
gold mine of information..people will pass it round and mention where they
got it from.

Yahoo free classifieds are a MUST, but you have to work them. Delete your
previous ads and repost to them 2/3 times a week.

Join newsgroups/discussion boards on topics that you know about and join in
offering your information. Be careful to check their rules for posting
first. Most do not allow blatant advertising but will accept your email
signature on the end of your posting.
Do you have anything for free?....if not, think of something you can give
away and advertise it. You can post to "freebie" sites (sites that advertise
free things on the web).
If you can think about purchasing a classified submission programme that
will automatically submit your ads/links to hundreds of free sites. Although
this is not really targetted advertising it does bring us hits and frees us
up to do other forms of advertising.
No one type of advertising is going to be the panacea (unless of course you
have a multi million dollar advertising budget) but a combination of a
variety of targetted advertising will bring in rewards.
If you are in the position to do so think about some cheap little ads in
ezines. We have done a few $5 ads in some crafty/family type ezines that
have been very effective and at $5 doesn't break the bank.
One more tip would be auctions. I would only bother with the biggies such as
ebay, amazon and perhaps Yahoo ones. We have had some amazing results from
these. Even sold items for more than we had them on our site. (I always
ensure that our URL is included with the auction ad. So people can go check
out our site prices for themselves. Even if your product doesn't sell the
auctions actually create quite a number of hits to our site....presto!  free
advertising)
Hope this is helpful.
Fiona & Joan :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do not th ink you will be able to get your redirection service listed in
the search engines, because they automatically boot out sites that contain a
refresh meta tag. However, at the same time, search engines are very slow to
change the listings that are already in place, so that could work to your
advantage. If your old url is already listed in the search engines, and if
you still have a way of updating the page, just change the index page on the
url to automatically transer visitors. Set the refresh rate to 1 so that the
change will be more instant. Even if the search engines do notice the new
refresh tag on your old page, it will most likely be years before anything
is done about it, and by then you shouldn't have any traffic still going
through that address anyway.

Thank you,

Jerry Garner

Subject: Site review

Hello Bogdan and Adland subscribers,
I hope I am not going to sound like a broken record... but I could really use
some imput on my site: http://sites.netscape.net/jamiemcdowell/bcountry
I have been following your advice and suggestions in your past several
digests, I personally think this is one of the best ezines out there and I am
very appreciative
of all your efforts and time.  With that said, I still cannot get any traffic to
my site.  I have been up and running for over a month and have received just
about 100 visitors - and no sales.   (The hitometer shows different because I
started out with a 500 counter!)

I have tried to target my audience by visiting other sites related to my pages,
I have also spent hours listing my url with any and all search engines I can
find as well as trading links and posting to classifieds, bulletin boards, etc.
I am offering a freebie - and from my own computer my site downloads fairly
quickly.  I'm not sure if I am just not getting the proper listings out there or
if I am just offering a "lame" product. LOL.

I am sure it's not just one specific problem causing my lack of visitors... if I
could get them there that's have the battle.  What am I doing wrong?  I have run
tune ups on my page and they all tell a different story!  Could my Meta Tags be
playing a role in all this?  I have not paid to have any listings done....would
I receive better placement if I did?  I see nothing wrong with making an
investment in advertising, but would it really make a difference?

Well, like so many other webmasters out there I am in need of some imput from
someone who has been there, done that.   I would be so appreciative if anyone
has any advice, suggestions or criticism.

Thank you for your time Bogdan,
Jamie McDowell

I have a site at http://www.gotplenty.com and I sell food storage systems as
well as some other nifty things. I have added content that I believed would
generate more traffic as well as a longer staying time, my pages load fairly
fast, and I have submitted several times to the search engines and FFA pages.
I've gotten only about 425 visitors so far in nearly 3 months... not enough
traffic and not nearly enough sales.
I am trying to use free or low cost resources to promote this site. Any ideas
how to get the traffic/sales?
One problem I am also having is figuring out a category to advertise in. What
category would you choose for these products?
Any help/comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello,

I have opened a Website to sell beauty products from France that are not yet
available in stores in the U.S.  Although the product is not well known in the
states, the traffic to our site has been doubling each month.  Unfortunately,
the number of purchases have not followed the same pattern.  The software I use
to monitor my traffic allows me to see when someone has put something in the
shopping basket and when someone has actually made a purchase.  The shopping
basket entries have increased but the customers are not closing the deal by
actually purchasing our products.  Is this common?  Any suggestions?

Merci,

Subject: Website Advertising/Closing the Sale

Hello, thank you for this very helpful newsletter about advertising etc.
I would like to know if anyone would please give us suggestions on
leading potential clients to a particular website and closing a sale.

Our company specifically deals with asset protection, privacy and tax
avoidance strategies.  We are an honest company looking for very
specific clients.  To be specific, we offer seminars in which are
pricey.  We need clients who can afford these seminars (preferably in
the $50,000-$100,000 and up income brackets.

Where can we go on a very small budget to find clients who are
interested in protecting their assets?

At all costs we don't want to SPAM because it is very unprofessional and
not very honest.  WE REFUSE TO SPAM!  WE REFUSE TO USE HYPE BECAUSE
EVERYBODY ELSE DOES!  WE SPEAK THE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH ABOUT
MONEY, FINANCES, POLITICS AND ECONOMICS!

For those who are either curious or interested in understanding what we
are offering, may we suggest visiting our website at

THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

We look forward to any suggestions and thank you very much for your time

I need something that supports Excel spreadsheet

be convenient if it kept track of individual customer

I've looked at quite a few products and the best so
far costs about $525.

Can you suggest a lower cost alternative?

To open our discussions, I'd have 2 questions and a proposal, either
interesting for the entire group, I believe ...

1 - I'm looking for addresses of FFA Pages where I can post my link free to
a few hundred different Web Sites all over the world.
I already have a list of few good addresses that I will send in exchange of
yours, it's very important swapping opinions and informations on the Net !

2 - I'm looking for a list of worldwide servers which can offer free E-Mail
possible to read with my Outlook Express 5.0. For now, I know only Hotmail
...

3 - I'm looking for addresses of international mailing list where members
can do know to the group their own lists ...

A hot thanks to everybody; I'm always ready to help all of you !

From: Melody T Vargas  <melodyt@nafe.com>

Dear Bogdan and AdLanders,

In issue #117, Bryan Marsden <bryan97@pc.jaring.my>
asked for a site review of, as he states:

>The Best Shopping Experience Around
>ALLGOODS WORLDWIDE SUPERSTORE
>Shopping in 6 Languages
>visit us at http://www.allgoods.net

I admire Bryan's use of templates and style sheets.
His pages are consistent in their look and feel.

I reviewed the English, French and Spanish language
pages and did not find any significant translation
errors (although MY Spanish is far from flawless).

Unfortunately, these are also the kindest things I
have to say about the site.

Additional opinions in random order:

1.  Bryan has been reading about good ways to promote
sites because I see that he offers a free newsletter.
However there haven't been any produced any yet, why?
If I can't view a sample issue, how do I know that I
want to subscribe?  If anyone is wondering how I know
this, I clicked to subscribe and searched ListBot for
the archives.  There weren't any.  I suggest that he
go ahead and create newsletters weekly or on whatever
schedule he has promised even if their aren't any
subscribers yet.

2.  Why is it "the best shopping experience around?"
I saw no evidence of it.  I didn't see anything but a
collection of various affiliate programs segregated by
type.  There isn't anything illegal or unethical about
doing this, but it certainly doesn't make it the best
experience I have ever had.

My suggestion:
If Bryan wants to keep this shopping via affiliate
and reseller programs, then offer REVIEWS of the
products/site/shipping/customer service, etc. of the
programs you are participating in.  I might be willing
to purchase through the site if I saw the value in
your "RATING" system.  Otherwise he is just doing
the same thing anyone could do.

A site that I feel does this effectively is Refer-It.
Click on their "Program Directory" which is a setup
very similar to Bryan's, but adds value in ratings:
http://www.refer-it.com/wmain.cfm?id=5157
Disclosure: The URL provided is my affiliate link.

3. Why is the One&Only Network a "Store of the Week?"
Is it a store?  I know some people would say it's a
meat market, but I REALLY don't think that it counts.
I know they pay a decent bounty for sign-ups, but if
Bryan wants to feature them, move it to a different area.
Maybe a nice button on the navigation column or at the
bottom of each page.

4. The site was running slow, but that could have been
my ISP as much as the graphics being loaded from off-
site.  I would check this carefully.

5.  I picked some random pages and had a couple of broken
links show up.  With as many links as there are, they
should be checked often. There are great online tools to
do this at:  http://www.jimtools.com/ Just click on the
Links tab at the top.  There are other places with link
checkers too and many html editors now have them also.

6.  Byran is getting hits, but how is he getting them?
For instance, if he posted in a parenting area with the
link to the education page in his signature, he would
be targeting clicks and probably selling more.  I know
because I just started to resell Hooked on Phonics this
way.  I have made 2 sales in the 4 days I have been on
the program using this passive method of advertising.

I learned this method of selling from (warning - blatant
self promotion again) my favorite marketing manual by
Dr. Ken Evoy, Make Your Site Sell.  You can own your own
copy at a great value - less than $18(US).  Find it at:
http://www.sitesell.com/solution.html

There are lots of other ideas that I have, but most
of them can be found in Ken's book.  Check out his free newsletter and sample
chapter.  They can help.

Finally, Bryan wrote: "I have spent, like most people,
many long hours and late nights developing & modifying
my site to attract visitors and get them to spend
money but to no avail."

Bryan, what makes ME buy, as a consumer is a perceived
value or a desire or an immediate need.  Your site did
not call me to action.  It called me to feed your pocket.
You need to change the consumer's perception if you
want to generate sales.

Best wishes and good luck,
Melody T Vargas

Give An Intelligence Test!
By:  Melody Treece Vargas

So you've decided to do business on the Internet.
Perhaps you've decided to sell Llama Farms.  You've
created the Llama's Today web site and newsletter.
Now it is time to figure out how to market and sell
yourself and those Llamas.

You know this step is critical to success. What you
don't know is where to start.

You know there are lots of people willing to sell
you "secrets." Some will charge an arm and a leg for
them too, given a chance.

How do you avoid those tired, old hints that haven't
been updated in forever and a day?  How do you keep
from risking your money?

The solution --
Give potential programs an Intelligence Test!

Ask these questions whenever you consider whether or
not to pay for advice, and the Intelligence Test will
help you determine if it's an intelligent buy.

        The Success Solution Intelligence Test

*What are the credentials?
-Who are the people selling you the advice? Sometimes
this isn't important, but it's always nice to know.
-Is the person well known or successful in the type
of advice he or she is trying to sell?
-Can you find examples of their work elsewhere, such
as on the shelves at the local Wal*Mart, in the print
of "The Wall Street Journal," or on-line in articles
   and trade sites?
-Look around and find out about how the company
conducts business. Most of us don't want to support
   companies that act unethically.

*What are their customer's saying?
-Are there testimonials on the site? Do they look
like they came from real people (Mary James of
Chicago, IL -- maryj1@aol.com)? Do they look made
   up (M.J.--Chicago)?
-Don't delude yourself into thinking that
testimonials are fair and balanced. They will
represent the rave reviews, not the people who asked
for their money back. Still, testimonials offer you
a chance to see what their fabulously happy customers
think and feel about their advice.
-Try to reach a person who used or uses the program
or advice for their opinion? Get an opinion from a
current customer you know and feel is reliable
   whenever possible.

*Do they offer assistance to their customers?
-A program that offers to answer your questions is
practicing good business. Consultations are great, but
a FAQ (frequently asked questions) and e-mail help are
   good too.
-It makes sense that a reputable business would want
it's customer's to be able to get a hold of them. Look
for prominently displayed contact information. You may
also want to look for street addresses and telephone
   numbers on the sites.

*Is it affordable?
-If you plan to spend the rent money to purchase
advice, you need to rethink your priorities. If a
purchase is going to deprive your family of food and
shelter, then don't buy it. Some programs promise a lot
and they sound like the answer to every dream you ever
had. Dreams are wonderful things, but you can dream and
be practical at the same time.
-If an expensive program has you drooling, figure out
a way to squeeze it into your budget before you
purchase. Look to see if the program has any contests
or give-aways where you might win one for free. Free
   fits anyone's budget!

*Is there a guarantee of some kind?
-What kind of guarantee is it? "Lifetime-No Questions
Asked" is ideal. If you don't like it or can't use it,
then return it. A 90 to 365 day unconditional guarantee
is good too. You should know in about 60 days if it is
   is right for you.
-If you look at a program or advice and right away
discover that it isn't for you, then get a refund
   immediately.
-If you decide to try it out, use your calendar to remind
you a couple of weeks before the guarantee runs out. This
way, you won't lose out by missing the date.
-Be ethical. If you used the advice and it worked for you,
don't ask for your money back. If, on the other hand, it
was useless or outdated advice, get your money back.

*Is there a sample, trial or demonstration?
-If the advice is plentiful and good, there are probably
freebies on the site to tempt you into a purchase. If
there are samples, by all means, take them up on it!
-True try-before-you-buy is best. This would be excerpts
or sections from the final work. But, even if it some
other type of trial, chances are the stuff you get for
free will still be useful, even if it is incomplete.
-The idea is to tease you into buying. It's a good tacit
for both the seller and the buyer! You get a chance to
see if their writing is clear, concise and useful (even
if limited) and they have a chance to sell you. Win-Win
   situation.
-If the sample stinks, chances are the advice will stink
too. On the other hand, if the advice has you
dancing at the computer, it might be time to pry open
   your wallet.

*Does it make sense for you?
-No one can answer this one except yourself. If the
advice is geared toward selling yak farms on-line
and you want to sell llama farms, then the advice
might be worth paying for and adapting to your own
   needs.
-On the other hand, If the advice is geared toward deep
space exploration and you want to sell macramé plant
hangers to llama farmers... well, it doesn't matter how
great the advice is. It may be great entertainment, but
the business applications will be few.

Every time you find yourself trying to determine if
advice or a program is a good buy, simply pit it up
against this simple Intelligence Test.  Immediately
you will know if it is a valuable buy.

Then, when you become a successful on-line llama
farm seller and want to sell *your* Llama Farm advice
or create a Llama Farm Affiliate Program, just
remember to put your program through the test before
you offer it to your customers!

Good luck with those Llamas.  Next time I'll tell
you how to cross-market Llama hair to yarn spinners
and increase your profits.

======================Joke of the Day=====================
Joke provided by
Laurie Delk <delk@columbia.total-web.net>

There was a blond, a brunette, and a redhead that were trying out for a new NASA
experiment on sending women to different planets.
First they called the brunette in and asked her a question.  "If you could go to
any planet, what planet would you want to go to and why?
After pondering the question she answered, "I would like to go to Mars because
it seems so interesting with all the recent news about possible extra
terrestrial life on the planet." They said, "Well okay, thank you." and told her
that they would get back to her.
Next the redhead entered the room and the NASA people asked her the same
question.  In reply she said, "I would like to go to Saturn to see all of its
rings."   Also saying, "thank you" and that they would get back to her.
Next the blond entered the room and they asked her the same question that they
asked the brunette and the redhead.  "What planet would you like to go to?" She
thought for a while and replied, "I would like to go to the sun." The people
from NASA replied, "Why? don't you know that if you went to the sun you would
burn to death?" The blond smirked and put her hands on her hips.  "Well duh-I'd
go at night!"
