================S u c c e s s    S t o r y  ====================
From: Tim Sanders <tlsspkrs@earthlink.net>

Hello Bogdan & AdLand Readers

I wanted to share my small success story with everyone. I posted my web page in
May of this year, When it was close to being done, I submitted it to your
readers for a site review. The single review I got was bad to say the least!
I went back to the drawing board and redesigned my site. At the same time I
began
buying and reading different courses, Cookie Cutter, Make Your Site Sell,
I subscribed to several newsletters and began to see a pattern of advice grow
from
all of things I was reading. I decided to write my own course and called  it
CSA. I spent almost 200 hours writing it and still update and add to it almost
daily. While I was writing, I decided to promote and pre-sign members, I did
this for 3 weeks.

Back in May I joined Six Figure Income and was very happy with the results that
I saw as a member. So I designed CSA as a FREE promotion to use to help build my
SFI downline. In it's first week, (it is now 10 days old) I signed 4 new
Affiliates and 2 new Members to my SFI powerline. Considering that my page
averages only 33 hits a day, I felt these results were extraordinary! Including
the pre-sign period I have had 103 people opt-in for the info on CSA which is
delivered via Autoresponder, this is 11% of the recorded page views for the same
period. I gave everyone that pre-signed a FREE membership to help get things
going. I created an original banner and submitted it to several banner exchanges
and placed ads in several classified sites including AdLand (which is listed
first and best in CSA).

Following the same advice, outlined in CSA, my original site, TLS Speakers at:
http://home.earthlink.net/~tlsspkrs/  is now seeing hits from search engines and
has tripled it's page views for this month (already over 1000).

After investing many hours and several $$$, I am very happy with the results
that CSA has achieved in these first few days. I am truly looking forward to
seeing where it will go! Below is a portion of one of the autoresponder messages
describing CSA in more detail.

What is CSA?

It's many things, but mostly it is a promotional tool
to be used as a free gift to get people to join your
favorite offers.

I offered you a FREE CSA membership if you would become a
FREE SFI Affiliate by going here:

http://www.sixfigureincome.com/free/?76933.2

Once you become a FREE CSA member you can then give CSA
memberships away to promote your favorite offers.

CSA contains:
Web Design Tips
Web Promotion Tips
Search Engine Tips
Motivation and Inspiration Tips
Step by Step Instructions on
how to build a Internet Income
of up to $20,000 a month
Small Business Tax Deductions (US Residents)
A Free Newsletter
with FREE advertising for members!
A WebRing, Exclusive to CSA members!

Interested Readers can get more opt-in info by going to:
http://home.earthlink.net/~tlsspkrs/realincome.html

This was a bit off putting as I then had to open a new browser window & type

OR maybe I muffed it and didn't "do it right" ??

Re: Your comment on Cindy Margolis was true as far as page views
but page views on a site with 1 to 3 images per page did not seem
important when the the server shuts down. Our box was at Pair.com
and then at Exodus if the OC 3 that it ran through was shutting down
do to traffic how exactly should we measure page views ?
Most webmasters could not even understand that you could do 1.8 million
hits in 4.5 hours nor could the box handle such traffic. We then moved to
a SG Quad Pentium 4 and still had site down times without proper logs
there is no other way to run webtrends or analog to determine page views
so I used what hits the host said occurred to cause such a problem.
I am sorry if I did not state page views as a reference in the subject but
unless you have seen that much traffic in that time frame its hard to describe.
I have yet to see those numbers on any site even my Brother-In-Laws Greg
Norman at www.shark.com which does 1,000,000 page views in its first month
alone. Please excuse my article I.E. Cindy Margolis for I really had no other
way to explain the traffic.

These two pages are nothing more than a sales pitch. I am interested in

Anybody else know how to create doorway pages?

Subject: Doorway pages

Dear Bogdan-

Thank you so much for the doorway pages information!  I made my own
doorway page and am now listed as sites 2 and 7 (out of over 65000
entries) on Alta Vista!  My other keyword is listed as number 17! On
infoseek, I am listed as number 3!  Out of 6,431,247 matching sites...

If anyone would like to see the proof, go to either of these search
engines and type in 'computer financing bad credit'  It's right there!
I'm getting so many responses I'm having a hard time keeping everything
straight!

In the last issue, you had mentioned something about putting information
in your signature line.  I don't mean to sound ignorant, but how do you
do this?  I am relatively new to webmastering, and would appreciate the
information.

Another tip-if anyone is involved in an affiliate program where
potential customers fill out an application, I highly recommend mirror
pages of the site.  I've been doing this for two days now and am getting
a very high number of apps.  I then enter the apps on my replicating
site.  I can also keep track of the apps this way.  I'm not really good
at explaining how to do this but if someone else would like to tackle it
I'm sure a lot of people would love to hear it.

Thanks again!  I love the digest!

======================N e w    P o s t i n g (3)========================
From: Marianne E. Payton <MPAYTON224@aol.com>
Subject:Postal service wants to charge for e-mail

Folks,

Here is a big business everyone is trying to tap into it.  Maybe we
should make the government earn its money off efficiency, not by
   taking it from us.

Subj: Postal service wants to charge for e-mail
Please read the following carefully if you intend to stay online
  and continue using email:
The last few months have revealed an alarming trend in the
Government of the United States attempting to quietly push
through legislation that will affect your use of the internet.
Under proposed legislation the U.S. Postal Service will be
<< attempting to bilk email users out of "alternate postage fees."

Bill 602P will permit the Federal Govt to charge a 5 cent
surchargeon every email delivered, by billing Internet Service
Providers at source. The consumer would then be billed in turn
by the ISP.  Washington D.C. lawyer Richard Stepp is working
without pay to prevent this legislation from becoming law.

The U.S. Postal service is claiming that lost revenue due to the
proliferation of email is costing nearly $230,000,000 in revenue
per year.  You may have noticed their recent ad campaign,
"There is nothing like a letter."  Since the average citizen
receives about 10 pieces of email per day in 1998, the cost to
the typical individual would be an additional 50 cents per day,
or over $180 dollars per year, above and beyond their regular
Internet costs.  Note that this would be money paid directly to
the U.S. Postal Service for a service they do not even provide.

The whole point of the Internet is democracy and non-interference.
If the federal government is permitted to tamper with our liberties
by adding a surcharge to email, who knows where it will end.
You are already paying an exorbitant price for snail mail because
of bureacratic efficiency.  It currently takes up to 6 days for a
letter to be delivered from New York to Buffalo.  If the U.S. Postal
Service is allowed to tinker with email, it will mark the end of the
"free" Internet in the United States.

One congressman, Tony Schnell (r) has even suggested "twenty to
forty dollar per month surcharge on all Internet service" above and
beyond the government's proposed email charges.  Note that most
of the major newspapers have ignored the story, the only exception
being the Washingtonian which call the idea of email surcharge
"a useful concept who's time has come." (March 6, 1999 Editorial)

Don't sit by and watch your freedoms erode away!   Send this email
to all Americans on your list and tell your friends and relatives to
write to their congressman and say "No!" to Bill 602P.

Subject: Newsletters -- No Free Lunches!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note from Editor.
This message appeared actually in different discussion list.
I though that it had great value for our list.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lately, I have read with interest articles posted to several different
newsletters regarding promoting a website through offering free
newsletters.  I think that some comments on the EFFORT that is required to
follow the newsletter promotion route would be a timely insertion to this
thread being carried simultaneously in different publications.  In this
article, I will use the term newsletter and ezine interchangeably.

Recently, I have been co-authoring a free ebook (coincidentally, about
promotion of websites including newsletters) with Rob Willmann, owner and
webmaster of Ubrande.com.  What began as a "nifty idea" turned into 12+
weeks of constant effort!  And, guess what?  For the past 3+ weeks, just
about everything else was placed on the back burner.  INCLUDING my own
newsletter, which is unacceptable!

An established newsletter with several hundred or several thousand
subscribers cannot put a newsletter "on the back burner" no matter how busy
the site owner becomes.  It is simply not an option!  Not if you want to
KEEP your subscriber base! People come to expect their newsletter to
arrive.  When it fails to come when promised, newsletter subscribers become
upset.  Upset subscribers are NOT good for your ecommerce business!

Initiating a newsletter and promoting it is not that difficult to
accomplish---not at first, it isn't!  You need to recognize that you are
making a long-term COMMITMENT.  As your subscriber base grows, so grows
your commitment.  If you are serious about your ecommerce efforts, then
you'd better be serious about your newsletter commitment, too!

No matter what else you have going on, to successfully offer a newsletter
requires a lot of hard, consistent work.  There are no free lunches!
Perhaps the following list of suggestions will be helpful to those who
already have a newsletter, as well as to those readers considering
establishing one for their own sites.

* Carefully consider the publication frequency that you are willing to
commit to keeping---because even if you have to stay up till the early
hours of the morning to meet your publishing deadline, you need to meet
your deadline.

* Always offer ONLY valuable content in your newsletter.  Don't send out a
bunch of "fluff" thinking it will drive loads of traffic to your site.

* It is OK to place a little blurb here or there about your own products or
services, but don't wear it out!  Let your newsletter's content be a major
reason that people want to revisit your site.  It follows that your site
needs to continually be updated with fresh, valuable new content, also.
Also, you can END the newsletter AFTER your signature with some promo's for
your site.

* You need to work diligently to make certain you have eliminated spelling
and grammatical errors from your ezine BEFORE you hit the send key!  If
necessary, get another site owner to proof your work with you.

* If you do not have quality writing skills yourself, it doesn't mean that
you cannot publish your own newsletter.  Instead of writing articles
yourself, what you can do is be aggressive and visit websites related to
your newsletter's topic.  Evaluate the sites you visit, and then select
those with valuable content, good site design and easy navigation.  Contact
each site owner with a personal email.  Invite the site owners to
contribute articles to your newsletter.  In exchange, you place a link at
the end of the article back to the contributor's site.  Carefully comb
through the articles you receive from contributors, and only include
articles from those with good writing skills. Make it clear to contributors
that you are seeking quality articles with valuable content, not several
paragraphs that simply promote the contributor's site, products and
services.

* Subscribe to several newsletters, and learn from them.

* Carefully plan your newsletter's layout.  Start the newsletter with a
topical overview that lets people know what the issue contains.  This will
let people skim through articles that don't interest them and get to those
that push their "hot button".  Also, consistently follow the same layout
from publication to publication.  This lets subscribers become comfortable
with your ezine, and grow used to how they use it.

* Maintain a related thread from issue to issue until that topic is fairly
exhausted.  This gives the ability to keep topics fresh while thoroughly
covering that subject.

* Keep your newsletter to a length that the average reader can finish in
one sitting.  I'd recommend 10 to 12 printed pages maximum, with some
newsletters being 5 to 8 pages.  I wouldn't violate these parameters too
often.

* Be sure to end your newsletter with your name, email address and URL.  As
noted above, insert some brief promotional items after this information.

Newsletters can be great promotional tools if they are done correctly, are
published when promised, and contain valuable content designed to be
helpful and informative. Recognize the fact that there are no free lunches
with newsletters.  You will EARN whatever gains you realize from publishing
your own ezine!

Keyword Focused Content Pages

“As a Web Marketer, it is natural to want to maximize traffic to your site.
But this instinct can put you at odds with the Search Engines’ goal of
delivering on-target searches. If you do anything to fool a SE’s algorithm
into delivering off-target results to its customers, it will take that as
personal attack on its livelihood. What would you do to someone who attacked
the very core of you business?......Exactly. You’d fight back, no holds
barred!” Ken Evoy, M.D., Make My Site Sell!”

Dr. Evoy has seen his hits go from <5,000/week to >60,000/week by properly
designing a gateway page, so we should heed his advice :-)

Keeping those words in mind, I would like to discuss a very popular topic
read in a lot of e-zine and discussion groups these days...Doorway or
Gateway Pages.

Simply put, these specially designed pages are specially designed for two
purposes-to attract visitors from Search Engines and for search engines to
rank your page in the first two pages of a keyword. Search engines have
never developed protocols for eliminating true content pages! However,
Infoseek for one, has eliminated doorway pages with little content and no
value to its’ customers.

However, this is where many people diverge, some feel that you need to
create these pages for ONLY search engine’s, using what some would call -
trickery or less than honest tactics. I would like to focus on what Ken Evoy
professes after changing his   attitude toward search engine’s, which can be
summed up by his saying, “make them your friends, not enemies”. After all,
how would you feel if everyone submitted hundreds of no value, no content
doorway pages to search engines that offered nothing to their customers and
created more work for the search engines? What would you do if you were
Excite, Infoseek...? Wouldn’t you start a campaign to rid your database of
this kind of doorway page?

To design a high value/content laden doorway page, we need to examine what
makes up a good doorway/gateway page. It needs a title, which is snappy and
benefit-oriented. In other words, ‘WIIFM’. You know, that old radio station,
‘What’s In It For Me’ attitude that most consumers have today.

Of course, before anything, it is important to plan how will these pages fit
into your sales effort from the opening page to your closer. Your opening
page must achieve your sales objective while maximizing priority keywords
while weaving keywords with a few keyword ‘combo’s.

With a good title, you need a value laden copy. This will increase your
relevancy ranking which will please both search engine algorithm’s and
customer’s. The page needs to hold the customer’s interest so they click to
your home page which leads them toward your “Most Wanted Response” closer
page. In other words, a visitor would need to first, find your page, then
click on it, and then click on a link to your closer page. Of course, if
your page is not in the first two pages of the search engine keyword
results, FORGET IT!

Again, your gateway/doorway page must be content laden with one or two
keywords laced throughout. These “Keyword Focused Content Pages” use your
top priority keywords that you have determined is most relevant to your
product(s). Use them often and everywhere.

With a title on your gateway page, you place Meta Keywords, Description
Tags, main body copy, headlines, links and alt tags. These are all covered
in depth by Dr. Evoy’s incredible book, found at:
http://www.sitesell.com/homebased.html

Some search engines score tightly focused, shorter copy better than longer
text (Infoseek), but most search engines look for greater numbers of
keywords but in lower density (keyword diffusion).

The bottom line is that Doorway Pages should offer unique, valuable content
already on your site, yet serve to attract an extended target market. Each
page should be customized from scratch...from the title to the last word of
body.

In summary this type of doorway page will benefit you by being:

* simpler
* totally fair for visitors and search
engines (SE’s who deliver what they
promise - accurate searches - will
score your site higher and LOVE
          you for doing so!)
* having the same power as other
           types
* in no fear of search engine counter
           measures

======================Joke of the Day=====================
Joke provided by
Dennis Sutherland

Efficiency Expert

An efficiency expert concluded his lecture with a note
of caution. "You don't want to try these techniques at home."

"Why not?" asked somebody from the audience.

"I watched my wife's routine at breakfast for years," the expert
explained. "She made lots of trips between the refrigerator,
stove, table and cabinets, often carrying a single item at a time.
One day I told her,  'Hon, why don't you try carrying several
things at once?'"

"Did it save time?" the guy in the audience asked.

"Actually, it did," replied the expert. "It used to take her 20
minutes to make breakfast. Now, I can do it in 12 minutes flat."
