Subject: Problems of a Deserted Website (Was Looking for free advice)

Hello fellow Adlanders!

I was interested in Harveyıs problem with web traffic. So,
even though not a geek, I thought Iıd offer my crumbs of
hope for him.

Our website is now doing very nicely. And growing. Not
a stampede, not a riot, certainly,but steady. We're getting
plentyof sign-ups and are satisfied that we're supplying
a useful, indeed necessary service online.

So, Harvey, this is what works for us for a start: a little
of everything. Every day, I record every move I make.
Then, I check my Stats and try to identify changes:
everything on the web either works, or doesnıt
work. Eliminate what doesnıt work. Repeat what
works relentlessly as long as it keeps working.

A bit like allergy treatment, I try to add one new
Œthingı each day. That way, itıs easy to see progress
or lack of it.

Thats why Iım liking FFAs. I paste my little message
all over the place - and I get results. Most pass by
my ad, which is fine. But wary souls are to be
found in all kinds of places and Iım glad. I use the
terrific services available at
http://www.dotcom.ca/easysubmit/websubmit.htm .
Itıs free. It works like a breeze. And Iım getting
results.

Iım also trying to fine tune my pages for Spiders.
submitting by hand to the big 6 and to the rest by
the gizmo at dotcom. Thereıs loads of great
advice on this on the Web.

Harvey could download Jim of Virtualpromote.com
archives and subscribe to his great newsletter.
Jim is a very safe counsellor. He also has some
great Œstuffı at JimTools.com - well worth a stop
by for any harried marketer.

About 6 big classifieds work for me - particularly
Yahoo. You can paste ads into 10 categories in
their business section - or any other section and
they bring results. After 3 - 4 days, return, delete
all ads and re-post. Youıd be surprized how nicely
this works.

Hope Harvey takes heart and that he finds this
a little helpful. None of it costs a penny which
is also a consideration for an overwhelmed
newbie!

Above all, Harvey, steer clear of the sharks, the
rip-off merchants!

From:   "Henryk Bartnicki" <hbart@zg.onet.pl>
Subject: massive traffics to your websits. I doubt it.

I read AdlandDigest #134 carefully and although I found out that I am not
the only one on the net without immediate success, I do not feel any better.
I have been advertising on the net for a few months now and there still is
not much of a success.
I am an export management representative for a few of my friends. They are
manufacturers of garden furniture made of plastic resins, gyps, cement,
wicker, iron, aluminium. I created a web page and announced it to the world
( I hoped ). I send my ads to the world trade boards, to many of them and I
replicated my ads each and every day. I sent my URL to search engines with,
I believed, some success. AltaVista indexed it on 7th place (keywords:
gardenornaments ) out of over 300,000. So the topic seemed to be popular. I
was once indexed at 1st place ( with keywords: ecological soft toys ) still
out of over 300.000, Once again I thought that because of the topic's
popularity I should have many visitors to my place. The gate to my sites is
: http://home.beseen.com/manufacturing/gardens
I might understand it if there was some traffic to my pages and then it
stopped. O.K. people didn't like my pages, but there is not more them two
maybe three visit to my pages a day. What's wrong?
I started to advertise at FFA links pages, smallbizFFA, I have my own trade
boards ( a lot of postings there ), I joined a few affieliate programs, I
placed a few banners on my pages, offering such things as: quick and easy
access to 500,000 European companies, All Languages Translations, Sending
your url to 1650plus, Advertise to thousands, etc. It doesn't work. What's
wrong.
My only achievements are hundreds of emails in my boxes. I read nearly all
of them, but after my responses to the senders, I received follow-ups from
which  it seems to me that my messages were not read.
HELP!

Best regards,
Henryk Bartnicki

Harvey I went and looked at your site and a couple of
things jumped right out at me. First let's take your
top product MLS. I happen to also be involved with MLS
and do great with it my site ...................
http://www.magiclearning.com/DR44039 it is the same as
your's but the big difference in my opinion is you
list
ZERO BENEFITS EXCEPT that you got a check or two that
did'nt bounce! No mention of the company guarantee of
your money back no questions asked if you or your
child doesn't improve one FULL letter grade after using the
program for one semester or 6 month's whichever is
longer! Or that there are testamonial's on file that
tell of doing homework in half the time, or after
using the program high school aged kids report they
felt like they were cheating now!! Any product I don't
care what it is, MUST have some BENEFIT to your
potential customer!! Or so this point hit's home with
you try this...redesign your site and just say FREE
MLS PROGRAM go to and download or whatever..i'll bet
you any amount of money you won't move anymore
product!

Now let's talk about your FFA section of your page.
If you believe in these pages and think you can make
any money with them more power to you! That said there
is a line in your description and I quote.. "Maybe you
would like to be in the retail business with your own
retail business with your own website where you could
buy your own equiptment at a discount, sell
merchandise to other's and at the same time sell the business
opportunity. Do all three and still have basically no
up front money invested yourself. Ok first when I read
this the first time it just made my head spin! First
off in my experience no one has EVER sold a MAYBE!!
Right off the bat my first reaction seeing MAYBE as
the first word of your sales message was ...well MAYBE
NOT!

You have to EXCITE your customer's by showing them HOW
your product is going to BENEFIT them! I see a
recurring them happenning here don't you? Use phrases
like....Let me SHOW you how....or Explode your website
traffic today or people's FAVORITE word in life and on
the net FREE as in...FREE REPORT: How to make your hit
counter SCREAM!! There are MANY keywords that people
will pick up on! You trying to market your products
are faced with STIFF COMPETITION! You MUST stand out from
the crowd or like I said earlier you can post on your
site that you're giving away all your products and if
no one shows up or no one see's a benefit in taking
your free products they won't! Also the bascially no
up front money invested yourself doesn't get it either in
mt opinion. How about ....For only PENNIES PER DAY you
too can...or For the cost of ONE trip to McDonald's
you too can....something people can relate too!

Now let's talk about your traffic problem. You MUST

PROMOTE PROMOTE PROMOTE and when you're done promoting
you go and PROMOTE some more! There was an article in
the issue of Adland Digest that you posted your
request for help in that was right on the money! You place ads
EVERYWHERE testing at ALL times! When you find and ad
that works you post it and post it until it needs to
be changed which eventually it will! The net is in a
constant state of change and you MUST change with it
or.......Now..do you publish an ezine or newsletter?
if not WHY???? Set up e-mail capture forms on your
site
you have a guestbook USE IT!! put above your guestbook
Sign my guestbook and Let me run your best 40 word ad
in my newsletter Harvey's Sure Fire Marketing Tips
EZINE for a month or 5 issues as my way of saying
thanks for signing my guestbook! There are a myriad of
ways to profit handsomely from your newsletter!! If I
lost everything tomorrow and had to start over I would
start another newsletter and get a listserver so I
could deliver my newsletter and there is no doubt in
my mind I would generate profits again in no time!
Harvey PLEASE don't take this as a personal attack all
i'm trying to do is help and I was where you are and
someone came along and helped me so every chance I get
I try and return the favor!! If you would like to see
any of my site's or would like to subscribe to my
newsletter Your Net Riches Marketing News write to
me at webmaster@netriches.com or come by the site and
sign up there! If you're willing to work Harvey i'm

Subject: Alternative to printing (I just can't seem to get my foot in the door)

Hi everybody, czesc Bogdan,
I'd like to comment on Lester L. Lesoine's post.
I get quite a few requests for a printed catalogue in my business
(quite understandable if you have large variety of items or products
that either need to be displayed or described). Yes, it can be quite
expensive to produce a full colour brochure. So far I created a black
and white (or I should say grey scale) catalogue in addition to the
pictures and description on my page. I know it doesn't look too
professional, so I am developing a catalog that will be downloadable
for my customers and solve the problem and cost of printing. I'm
still searching for a right software to do it, but MiniCat looks like
a possible winner. Les, maybe that could solve your problem as well?
Take care!

Subject: "Berries to market" (was I just can't seem to get my foot in the door)

Hi Bodgan & AdLanders,

As usual, I've gotten too personally involved in
an issue of AdLand!  In #134, Lester L. Lesoine,
<cornerstone@sosbbs.com>, vents his frustration:

> the people that are interested want to see a
> brochure, most printing places i have contacted
> want .48-.51 each for a full color brochure and
> have a minimum run of 1,000. this does not include
> the postage rate.

Since it appears that your designs are unique and
hand painted individually, why not tell them that you
do not offer brochures.  Offer to send them a price
list and a 35mm close-up that has the detail of how
each unique painted piece will look when finished.

They are interested in seeing what these berries
"really" look like, so this should satisfy them.  Just
mention that each size is painted similarly, in the
correct proportions and according to its own unique
character.

> i am but a small company. i just can't seem to get
> my foot in the door.

You might not agree with me, but I suggest that in
order to appeal to a wider audience, you should down
play the Christianity on your site and up play your
merchandise.  Being religious is great, but it isn't what
you are selling -- the berries are.  Try to get a close-up
on the site.  These look really fun and I'd be tempted
to get some if I could see them better.

> net experts who viewed my page said i have a unique
> niche product perfect for sale via the net.

I agree with their assessment of your product.  Did they
give you any other suggestions?  Such as form and color?
It doesn't look professional -- sorry.  Here are better
tone/hue/intensity color matches:
* FF9999 for the Pink and 66CC66 for the Green
* 006633 for the Red and CC3333 for the Green
However, I really recommend using a white background
and picking one color for the left border.  Get rid of the
frames, they are unnecessary and chop up the site too much.
You didn't ask for a site review, but no matter how good
your advertising is, if your site doesn't sell, it won't work.
You might want to check out Make Your Site Sell for more:
http://www.sitesell.com/solution.html

> i am just struggling to find and market to my target
> audience. might you have some pointers or suggestions you
> might be willing to share?

Try posting in various home and garden forums about
your interest in gardening and rocks with your signature
file doing some silent selling for you.  See if you can hunt
down some similar souvenir or decor sites who will
trade links with you.

Good luck,

From: kelvin brown <cashinsite@yahoo.com>
Subject: Doorway pages

I saw the following questions listed on a forum and
thought that some of you might have the same
questions.

Kelvin

Now about Doorway pages...

Question:

I read the article about those, and was wondering if
they are redirect pages that you name index1.html,
index2.html, etc.. that redirect to your index page??
Is the concept just creating a whole bunch of these
pages, putting slightly different keywords in each
page, uploading them to your server and registering
them with the top 10 search engines? Am I on of off??

Answer:
You want to try to stay away from naming pages index1,
2,3, etc.
Some search engines consider this spamming and you may
penalized you in the ranking of your site, or may not
list the pages at all.

REDIRECT, you could be talking about redirecting with
a refresh command. Or just a simple page that will
display directions on it, that once clicked on will
take you to the desired pages.

Question:
What makes Doorway pages different from mirror sites?
My affiliate program gives everyone a premade website
and Internet mall, but THEY have to upload it to their
server.

Answer:
Doorway pages are pages that are setup to gain high
ranking in search engines based on specific
keywording. For instance if you were promoting telcom
you might use the keyword phrase (calling card) on one
page, and ( phone card) on another page.

MIRROR Sites: The keyword being sites, (a group of
pages). These are multiple sites setup with the same
basic information. Usually hosted on two or more
domains.

Affiliate Sites: When you have the same content as 500
other affiliates you will have a hard time gaining a
better ranking in search engines than the other
members. In this case you would be better off (if
allowed) creating a doorway page or two, with at least
two paragraphs of information, and a real hyperlink,
no refresh commands, dedicated to the program you are
promoting and submit that page to search engines.

Subject: RFWorks review (Was I just wanted to promote my site)

Dear Bogdan and AdLanders,

In issue #134, Blaird Foxton <rbfoxx@yahoo.com>
wrote some interesting points about getting wrapped
up in the affiliate game.  If you have your own ideas
and products to market, be sure to concentrate on
YOUR site first, then add related affiliate programs
to fill in.  Mr. Foxton gave excellent advice.

He also asked:
> Meantime, if anyone would care to visit my site at
> http://www.nvo.com/rfworks and give me your review of
> it, I would be happy to do the sqame for you.

The URL seems to be: http://www.nvo.com/rfworks/
But I found it fine after I added the trailing slash.  A
potential customer might not have thought to change the
URL a little to find the site.  Many browsers are "smart"
enough to find a site again without the trailing / once you
get their first time, but I'd fix it.

I'm in no way a radio expert, so I won't comment on
content other than I am confused about what the site is
for.  Is it Radio Frequency, or 2 way radio, or cellular?
I thought that the focus was vague, but I'm not up on the
industry and it might be perfect for the niche.  I'd ask
someone really into radio if it lacks a clear statement.

The color scheme is masculine and pleasant.  It used
easy to read colors and fonts.

I suggest adding a privacy policy to the page with the
mailing list.  A lot of people are looking for these as a
matter of course.

The top portion with the mailing list plug is clunky looking.
Reduce the font one point, don't indent and clean up the
format.

Headline a benefit in the opener.  You need to make them
want to explore the site.

Advertisement is abreviated "ad" not "add."  Add equates
to addition.  Run an overall grammer check and spelling
check.  Use a more active voice in your copy and it will
be more exciting to the readers.

If you want to run a Help Wanted section, why not pull
some links to related jobs off of a public service, then
link back to the site where you found the job.  A lot of
services seem to be doing this for their members and
most job boards allow it as long as you link to them
instead of promoting the job as your own listing.

I believe that Survey Solutions allows you to format their
surveys to any size you want.  Resize the survey box so that
it isn't all scrunched on the right side of the screen.

Overall, I think that you are going to need to get to
some trade areas to promote your site and get some
opinions from radio enthusiasts and business owners.

Good luck,
Melody

Hi folks,

I'm sticking my nose back into issue #134.
Denise <info@checkeredflag-raceshop.com>
needs a shopping cart:

I recommend that you look into ccNow if you don't
already have a merchant account.  They offer credit
card services and shopping cart built in, which makes
them a good deal for start ups.  If you sell more than
$10K a year, though getting your own account is
probably a better way to go.

If you want your own merchant account, there are some
carts that work better with some merchants than others.
You can also see if your host offers a suggestion or a deal
because many of them do.  If not, here are a few cart
sites to try:

Subject: Do You Have Trouble Getting Paid for Affiliate Sales?

I am an online affiliate marketer.  In fact, that's what my website is
all about, and it features many different affiliations throughout.  I am
hoping there are other affiliate marketers in this group who may be able
to provide me with some information about a program which I feel has
"Gone South".

First, I must mention that the vast majority of programs I affiliate
with pay me right on time every month, and that includes Adland of
course.  Overall, I have the greatest respect for the successful
organizations I market for, and they are still featured on BBL.  For
this post I am asking if any of you have had any problems with the .....
Linkshare Network.  http://www.linkshare.com   ( I have temporarily
removed Linkshare from my "Referral Programs" page ).

My shopping center links generated sales in June and July from one
merchant in the amount of $1,885.00, for a 10% commission of $188.50
owed to me.  The terms of payment from Linkshare are "monthly", but I
have never received any payments from Linkshare for these sales.  To
make it really confusing and frustrating, I have written several very
respectful letters of inquiry via e-mail to Linkshare about this matter
without results.  I also wrote 3 times to the merchant, and have never
received a reply.

I did receive a very sarcastic letter from a staffer at Linkshare,
indicating that I needed to be patient, and contained very little
helpful information about the situation.  Since Linkshare has decided
not to pay me on time, and refuses to respond with a reasonable
explanation, I thought I might ask:  Are there any subscribers to this
e-zine who have had similar problems?

If anyone has any specific information about what is going on at
Linkshare, please post back to this digest, or write to me privately
at         altair2@ix.netcom.com        I would appreciate any help at
all.  Also, does anyone on this list know what entity I might submit a
complaint to?  Is there a "policing" agency to assist small businesses
recover debts from larger corporations such as a Chamber of Commerce or
Better Business Bureau, etc?

Since the terms are "monthly", those sales are 4 to 5 months old, and
the commission payments are certainly late.  By the way, there are no
"minimums" on sales for commission payments with Linkshare.

Thanks very much for any advice,

Franklin Banker

I am now thinking of targetted opt-in mail as well as paid banners

site and gives me a sincere opinion whether moving in that direction
will be a better choice for me.

Hello! I'm new to this list. This may sound like a silly question, but along
with paid advertising, do most of you find that taking advantange of free
advertising is beneficial in any way? From what I've seen so far, I've had
the most luck with paid advertising but I have also begun to see some results
from free advertising. Just wondering the opinions of others regarding this.
Thanks!

Personal Productivity success in our daily lives has less to with
the traditional tools of Time Management ("to do lists",
prioritizing, and delegating skills) and more to do with enjoying
the good cooperation of other people.

For most people, better than half of daily success can come from
networking with those who can help us to significantly advance in
our journey.

I wrote a short piece entitled, "Multiplying with Networking"

Subject: Two web site

Hi Everyone

My name is Bonnie and my husband and I have increased our sells of Standard
Poodles via the internet and our web site.  We have been very successful
since downloading our website about a year ago.  Our sells of standard
poodles to approved homes have doubled.  Our waiting list have also doubled.

Last month we launched a second website for dog treats.  So far nothing.    I
would like to ask how long does it take for search engines to pick up new
sites after submitted.  To be honest with our first site we just submitted to
search engines and left it to that.   With our poodles I advertise in AOL
free classifieds for dogs.  Word of mouth and repeat buyers also.

Please review our sites and any suggestions would be appreciated.

===============Site Review Response (1) ====================
From: William J. Viers  <billyjoe@gorge.net >

Dear Judy:
Your site http://mysiteinc.com/jwd/hello.htm has a nice appearance. It loads
very slowly. Having used "Counter.com" in the past as a counter, I find their
free counter hangs up a page and causes slow loading.

Let's take each segment of your page and do a quick review.

1.  Your "Dear Friends" text was laid out in a manner of which may appear to be
effective in eye appeal for design in relationship to your advertising banners
on the right side of the page. However, by aligning your text "right," your text
has a very jagged left side edge appearance. It is quite difficult to read. You
might consider getting the same effect you desire by putting your banners to the
left side of the page and your text greeting to the right side of the page with
text "align='left". This will still give you a straight line effect adjacent to
your banners, but your text will be aligned to the left and will fit into the
norm of what visitors are used to in their reading habits. Or, you might leave
your text in the position it is now and align your text using "align="justify".
This way, you will have a straight lined text on the left and the right down
your column. As it is, I would not read the text. Justifying text may require
you to split words on some lines as justifying does sometimes put extra white
space between words to make the line stretch from the left side to the right
side of the column.

2.  I am slightly sight impaired, so I would recommend you go from an 8 point to
a 10 or 12 point text.

3.  Have you optimized your advertising banners on your page? I have many
affiliate programs and most require downloading to my files. Even though the
affiliate program provider states they do not want you to modify anything, I
still run their banners through Net Mechanics .gif optimizer and try to shrink
the size of the file down so my pages load faster.

4.  Even though your page is not lengthy, to get faster loading, you might
consider splitting your HOME PAGE into two pages. The faster the page loads, the
more visitors you will receive.

5. At the bottom of your HOME PAGE, you have a banner to the right of the EBIZ
banner that is not loading every time. It also has an email address which, when
clicked on comes up with a window showing and "invalid destination." You might
want to go to Net Mechanic and use their free link check to check your links.
http://www.netmechanic.com/.

The eye appeal of your site, other than the text problem I mentioned is very
good. The white background is proper in that it highlights your lay out very
effectively.

Hope this is of some help. I try to give a first impression opinion when I do a
site review, rather than digging into the site. The first impression is what
either holds your visitors or looses them.

You might be interested in a web site that is in your general vicinity of the
world. Marilou Ovalsen, a Phillipine lady who lives in New Zealand maintains
several "personals" web sites and is very successful world wide with her web
pages. One of her web sites is especially appealing in web design. Drop Marilou
a line be email and get acquainted. Maybe she can help you make some money with
your web site. Hers is a match making site, not an "adult" type site. Tell her I
referred you to her site if you send her an email::

From: "Owen Sant' Angelo" <osa@maltanet.net>

Hi All !

I have been subscribed with the Adland Digest for the past 8 months or so,
and have enjoyed reading every issue.
I would like to offer my website for review - http://www.mapswebsite.cjb.net
. The site's theme is maltese physiotherapy students online. It's a low
budget affair with graphics rendered by online generators and the site
itself registered with geocities, with a cloaked url. Still, I plan to keep
on adding information regarding physiotherapy so as to eventually make it a
hub of that particular health care area online.
That's a fairly basic description of the site, the rest is up to you !
All comments and ideas are welcome at:

What I want is a simple site that basically shows the

a beginner myself and want to share my experiences.
Please review my site and email me know your thoughts
