Greetings All

Welcome  158  new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

                                        ----===(*)===-----

In last issue (#149) I invited everybody to give your vote for Adland
Digest Success Story of the year.
Response was very disapointing and I'm asking you again to spend
10 minutes of your time and give your vote for the best success story of
the year.

Below is my message from last issue

< Start >

As I was promising for the entire year 1999, now is the time to reward,
those brave people who contributed their private stories
for  Adland Digest Success Story of the year 1999.

Some of you will be familiar with the stories which were published
here, but some who joined Digest later, either had chance of
reading a few of them or not at all.

The concept of  Adland Digest Success Story of the year is quite
simple.
Link to first three  winning  success stories will be placed  on each
AdlandPro.com page throught year 2000.
Exposure obtained from this promotion can be tremendous amount
of traffic to  winners of this contest. AdlandPro  receives  500,000 page
viewings , 90,000 unique visitors  each month.

So now is  your turn to vote for the best success story of the year and also
submit   your success story for the year 2000.
Please go here to give your vote for Adland Digest Success Story of
the year 1999.
http://www.adlandpro.com/storyvote.asp

and here to vote for logo which will be displayed to link to success story
itself.
http://www.adlandpro.com/logovotefinal.asp

You will find there some  fine pieces of graphics  and next time you
need graphic work, you will know where to go.

<End>

                                        ----===(*)===-----

AdlandPro runs submission service and recently one of the customers
wrote in that way when placing the order for the submission.

<-------
I have been told search engines don't recognise ? and my URL ends in ?136349.
I trust you will cancel my subscription if this is true and my money would be
waisted!!!
I will be conducting further information searches regarding this.  Plea se advise.
-------->

As we all know, some search engines won't  index pages with "?" in them.
Since this was quite challenging for me   to find solution to this problem and
not to loose the customer, I developed  little application which will take any URL
with "?" and convert it to something like link below.
http://www.adlandpro.com/createad.aspx
You will be surprised when you click on the above link.
Many of you've seen this site or even are being affiliated with them.

No important search  engine will  list anymore something like this
http://www.somesitecom/?136349

My question is how useful would be kind of service like this, which would  hide
all details of affiliate links.
Pleas note that this is not doorway page which redirects or expects user
on clicking on link after page is displayed.
My link causes  that any affiliate information after "?" is passed as supposed
to and affiliate page is displayed instantly.

How about  adding little feature which would allow affiliate on adding their
own banners like this one.
http://www.adlandpro.com/createad.aspx
The banner at the top doesn't belong to the site.

Subject: Adland Digest is the best

Hello everyone,
The first thing I would like to say is that Adland Digest has been a
wonderful learning tool for me.  I am a complete novice at everything
computer and internet but like everyone else I wanted a peice of the pie.
So I set out to learn all I could.  I have tried many things recommended by
many gurus and paid for a few marketing courses, only to learn that the
information they sold me was freely available on the net.

This was a hard lesson for me as I am disabled and live on a small pension.
I have learned more from following Adland Digest links and reading posted
comments than almost any other way I have tried.

At this point, my goal is to have a web site that gives free information to
people like me who want to have a web presence.

Right now I am working on getting links to sites like mine so that we can
trade links and help each other get more traffic and higher search engine
rankings as well as provide the net public with a valuable free service.

If anyone is interested in joining with me in this endeavor please visit my
site and then email me with your thoughts.  nelliebriggs1@earthlink.net

We "little guys" need to join together to get our presence known.  Many of
us have a lot to offer the web but no one knows about us.

How about it guys?  Let me know what you think of my idea.

Subject:I guess I'm just frustrated at this point

Hi Bogdan and AdLanders!

In issue #149, Karen Sprague <karengary@hotmail.com>
claims that she is, "just frustrated at this point."

She isn't alone.  Many folks who think about making a few
extra dollars (or $5,000 a week while they sleep) sometimes
work at their sites as long as the would a full time job.  I can
readily believe her when she says she is working hard at it.
What I think might be needed is to step back and figure out
what might help Karen and others work smarter.

Let's look at some of the things Karen is trying and I'll try
to offer some alternate ideas that might improve her site:

> I've been sumbitting to ffa links for over a month now
> and iv'e only had 2 sales...from friends.

Aside from special niche site ffa pages, these don't work.
In many cases, the ffa pages only exist so that the owner
has a legitimate reason to send you their offers in return
for allowing you to post.  Personally, I feel that ffa's (free
for all) are a waste of your time.

However, if you'd still like to do this, automating the
process.  This way, all you have to do is set the program
up to run and it will do all the labor for you.  Try Getfound
at http://getfound.webcaddy.net/foundload.htm for one of
the best free options.  It submits to over 1,800 ffa's with
only about 2 minutes worth of input by you and 15 minutes
of your computer's connection time.  Be sure to set up a
free email account with Yahoo or another service to use
when submitting or you will never be able to keep your
email from the ffa's straight.

> my pages are never listed near the 5th page. I don't
> know if i should spend more money on a links page

Karen could, but since she didn't give us a link to her site(s)
I couldn't check it out to see if seemed like a good fit.  There
isn't anything wrong with a links page, but I don't think that's
the problem.  I'd be happy to look at her site if she'd send
me the links.  I recommend thinking about getting your own
domain, it is almost always a smart choice if you're serious
about your business.  However, for someone trying to earn
a few extra bucks, there isn't anything wrong with staying
with the right kind of free sites in the beginning.

I suggest reading up on the search engine submission
processes.  There are a number of really good places to
get help and assistance, Search Engine Watch and Self
Promotion are two of the best.  You can find links to these
sites and other great search engine resources on my site at:
http://www.success-solution.com/searchengines.html

Don't buy those ads that say they'll submit to the top 100 or
whatever search engines.  There are NOT that many top
search engines.  Even if they are counting the "indexes" as
search engines, there still aren't 100 top ones.  Save your
money. If you have a serious business, go to a reputable
web design and optimization firm and get their assistance in
creating gateways, helping with copy, META tags, etc. They
should be able to provide references, show how well their
OWN site is listed under good keywords for their business,
and offer to transfer enough knowledge to you to make the
purchase of their service worthwhile.

> I can't even get someone elses banner installed cuz most
> of the websites have been built with the quick builder.
> Homestead dopes allow me to do this but that's the only one
> so far i could figure out.

I'm assuming that you are trying to install an affiliate program
banner.  I wouldn't worry about not being able to use banners
in general, because text links draw more hits than banners in
almost all cases.  Relavant copy surrounding a link intices a
person to click much more than banners.

Karen has mentioned pages.  I'm assuming that there a number
of sites that you have going, possibly on different topics or
programs.  Consider consolidating them into one very good
site or dumping them all together. Dump them?  Yep.  Why?
Because Karen said, "I dont know html."

Since you don't know HTML, I'd keep one page that allowed me
to easily create annotated text links and dump the rest. Delphi
http://www.delphi.com/ will let you do this.   This way, you can
have a site for joining programs and for using in your signature
file.  ALWAYS including your website in your signature unless
the rules of the place you are posting to forbid it.

Now for the important part.  Learn HTML.
It is not hard.  I am completely self taught and it is a lot easier
now, because there are so many tutorials on the Internet to
help you learn.   Take your time to learn how to do this, so that
you can create a better a site.  You'll find it worth your time.
If you are someone who feels they can't learn it, invest in good
WYSIWYG web creation software.  I really like Dreamweaver2.

If you decide not to learn HTML, you could think about doing
a newsletter instead of a webpage.  A strong newsletter as a
companion to your site is often one of the best ways to reach
your audience and get sales.

(Warning, shameless self promotion coming up)  I recommend
that if you really want to learn how to target an audience, build
a quality website and learn how to get orders, not just visitors,
get Make Your Site Sell http://www.sitesell.com/solution.html .
It is less than $18 US and provides the most sound, excellent
advice on selling on the web that you can find.  Even if you
decide against purchasing, the free newsletter alone will help
you learn more about how to get sales and create a good web
site.

> I guess I'm just frustrated at this point. i didnt expect to make
> a fortune on reseeling or mlm, but was hoping to at least
> make a few extra $$s a month. i couldnt even get anyone to
> sign up under me for surfing programs.

I just hit 1900 people in my downline for one of my paid to
surf programs.  I'm now making $150+ a month from it, but I
have never promoted it.  The links sit at the bottom of my most
popular page http://www.success-solution.com/workathome.html
People find it on their own.  They find it because I post a lot and
offer help and make my site a desirable place to visit.  That is
the key.

Good luck,

From:Spike Folker  <spike@greatlakeslandscaping.net>
Subject: I guess I'm just frustrated at this point

Karen-  Don't be frustrated!!!   You are on the right track.    Your post script
says it all- "I work hard at this."   Your 'asking questions' says the rest-
You want to learn.   We all need people like you in our downlines.    Often
80% of the people in downlines do NOTHING and wonder why it doesn't
work for them.   Let me give you a few quick pointers-

1) Never tell anyone you are a newbie.  Experts make mistakes, too, and
that's okay.   Too many will not tell the truth if they think they can take
     advantage of you.
2) You have learned that constant submissions to ffa sites isn't going to draw
you any traffic.   File that thought.  Add to it-   People that will take your
money
for submitting you to endless pages and engines won't get you any traffic
either.   FREE classifieds, are good.   It's not that you will get slammed with
hits, but what traffic they generate will be targeted!    Set up a routine
listing
weekly in many classified sites, including your own.    Include Yahoo.
3) If you are trying to promote your sales completely for FREE then you will get
what you pay for.   Little, or Nothing.
4) You must use follow-up letters to make sales.   You sold a couple of your
products to people in an MLM you are in.   My point exactly.   People like
to get to know the person they are spending money with.  Its the same in
cyber-space as in the "dirt" world.  People frequent the same shops because
     they like the people there.
5) Do what ever it takes to 'capture' e-mail addresses, and follow-up.   This will
increase your sales dramatically.  Remember:    It's not "quantity" of hits, its
"quality."   Targeted ezine advertising, lots of classifieds, with e-mail
capture
     is where it is at!

Our site specializes in helping folks like you!   We have a newsletter that gives
advice on everything from setting up your own newsletter, to choosing products,
and watching out for promotion packages that don't work.   Our main MLM is a
sweepstakes that politely captures e-mail addresses, invites the entrant to take a
survey (so you know their interests), then asks for permission to contact them!
We are able to market any number of things this way, and the 'players' become
repeat visitors too.   In general, our site gives away endless free things, so
promotion is easy, then all our sales come through follow-ups.    Check us out,
or e-mail me for more tips.

products or kinds of products, no more than 7 or 8. On my site I've been
offering books from around 10 different sources. This plan hasn't worked
well. I've offered too many choices. Most stores don't offer every possible
brand, but a few select ones. So I'm in the process of narrowing my focus,

Hi Karen,

I can truely understand your frustrations, especially after constantantly
seeing all the ads promising overnight riches.  What I finally realized is
that you CAN earn some extra money, but its not going to happen in a few
weeks or months.  If you're truely considering a "real" income, expect to
be working at it a year or two for the big profits (depending on the
product).  Once you realize this, it becomes tremendously less frustrating.

You didn't mention in your message what type of business you're promoting.
Is it a product or service that people can use?  Or is it one of those
programs that you have to focus on building a downline?  These are the ones
that are a watse of time in my opinion.  If you do have a product or
service that's useful, look it over again.  Do you use it (or have you used
it and liked it)?  If so, promote the product with a link to the income
opportunity has a sidebar.  I promise you some very suprising results.

I read your story-and I think YOU are right-and that company is WRONG-because EVEN on
the web-I do a search for whatever I am looking for, like last month I was looking
for a twin bed for my son. When I found the *style* I wanted, I continued to do a
search for that brand then thereafter, or close to that style, to see other options
of different companies, prices, etc. I spent SEVERAL hours each day for a FEW days
doing this! So......if ALL my options were on 1 page, I could have made my choice in
10-15 minutes!

If the company is afraid of their competition-then they WILL lose in the end. You
have to be able to stand next to them-and show why YOU are better. How many
McDonald's and Burger King's do you see RIGHT NEXTDOOR to each other? :o)

Subject:marketing-Choice vs. competition

Hi Bogdan and AdLanders,

In issue #149, Melanie <bearpass@jam21.net>
brings up a good topic, choice vs. competition

She mentioned that she markets like software, "side by side
as a choice."  I like that idea when it is accompanied by
reviews, comparisons of features, etc.  I am much more
likely to purchase from a site that adds value to my decision.

> I was recently turned down as an affiliate...because when
> they visited my site they saw was the competition.  They did
> not wish to be marketed side by side the competition
> and said... "the web is not K-Mart"

I agree, it is better than Kmart, because you can find expert
advice to go with your choices.  I can see why someone would
not want to be marketed by the competition, but I also think
this is short sighted.  The web is about "coopertitiion" and in
being seen side by side with the competitors, gives your own
strengths a chance to shine through, be it price, functionality
or customer service.

> [In] a computer store, one expects... *choices*
> What do you think?  On the web - specific to the web -
> which is the better train of thought?

I think that a page that offers a variety of programs, presented
in a good manner (meaning not just a bunch of affiliate banners
tossed together to try to get people to buy ANYTHING) is much
more likely to draw customers and increase the chance at a
sale for all of the vendors.

I think that this could be enhanced with separate pages with
reviews of each type of software, for people to learn more.
I'm with Melanie.  I'm thinking about how I'd feel about shopping
at Beyond.com, if I only got one choice for each type of
software they sell.  I would stop visiting in a heartbeat because
it wouldn't be worth my time.  I believe that she, not the vendor,
have the right idea.

I can top your story about transaction problems (lol) but it still supports your
position!

I am on the customer side of this issue.  In October I ordered a banner placement
for $14.95 for 4 months I think it was... (so the most it should have been was
$14.95X number of months.   Right?)

WRONG.  They charged my card with $1,495.00 and they waited till the 2nd billing
cycle after purchase + a totally different company is who the $ went to on my card!!
Naturally I assumed it was a typo on their part of course.  Oh and I forgot to
mention they never sent me a confirmation email at time of purchase either.  So when
I asked for copy of same...of course they sent it then....3 months later!

They won't refund my $ and it is already out of my card.  Yes I'm doing the
'dispute' thing but time has passed.  I've never seen the banner in action anywhere
in their system except the bottom of one links page....Definitely a $14.95 value...
I freaked.  Pretty expensive typo that can't be proven.  Yes I closed the card.
Now they say I can buy something else that I want from them for the total amount
taken.

 "Ain't that sweet?"

Note from Editor.

Dear Brenda.

I see your point.
I'm sure that on both ends are people who  either are not honest enough or run their
businesses in a way so nobody knows  "where is head or tail", which might lead to
all kinds of misunderstandings or errors.

Still you as a customer have only one phone call away from canceling your transaction
which wasn't signed by you with pen. And you can do it within six months from
the day transaction happened.
In case of merchant, if customer disputes the transaction, there is nothing merchant
can do if s/he doesn't have signed transaction slip and customer can't remember that.

I all my cases I could prove to my customers my correspondence with them, but
this still couldn't refresh their memory enough.

There were customers who admitted mistake and withdrew their dispute or paid
by other means.

Of course there are legal ways  of  collecting money from dishonest customers, but
in case of  prices in range of  $15-$100 one would have to loose tens of thousand of
dollars in order  to hire proper agency and still make profits here.

do you publish your own newsletter, ezine or offer
a free report from your website?  If the answer
to any of the above questions is yes, then you
have available on the Internet today... third
party endorsements.  You've seen them time and
time again where a newletter, ezine publisher or
webmaster endorses a product he believes in from
their report it's similar to what a pro athlete
does when he recommends a certain sneaker or
shampoo or credit card.

This type of marketing pulls about 300% better
than just a link.  If you can make a personal
recommendation about your product or have others
do it for you you will increase your income and
the effectiveness of your marketing.  Third party
endorsements are a win-win situation.

Let your customer know who they are dealing with.

The anonymity of the Internet has its advantages
but when dealing with real human beings with real
credit cards and checks, they want to know that
you are not a faceless webpage sucking up their
money but a human being who they can contact if
your thingamabug doesn't work.  Give a contact
number in your advertisements.  Put your picture
on your webpage;give them an address, a 1-800
number.  Let them know you will still be
available once they have purchased your product
or service.  Expose yourself to your customers.

If you endorse something that you believe in then
stand behind it and in front of it because
ultimately it's you the customer is buying from
not the pretty graphics on your webpage.

The Key to Internet Wealth is in Your Opt in List
By Wes Blaylock

Times are changing and the internet is bigger than ever. FFA pages
are becoming extinct and banners are becoming a less effective
form of advertising. The wave of the future has hit and marketing a
product as we know it will be changed forever.

So what is everybody doing now?

Every smart marketer out there is building his/her size of their opt
in mailing list. Whether its a newsletter, update mailings, special
promotions list, or whatever. They know that the more people who
have specifically requested information from them will be a lot
easier to sell to down the road. Email marketing through an opt
in mailing list has become the number one choice for marketing
gurus everywhere. Why?

BECAUSE IT WORKS!!

A list of people who want to hear what you have to say can make
you a load of profits each week. Every time I send out my newsletter,
I get more orders and signups for my programs then ever before. On
one of my other websites, I have a "Special Promotions" mailing list
for people to join. Each week I build another "special" webpage with
one of my products at a discount. Everytime I send out a mailing to
my list descibing the "Special Discount", my email box is flooded
with orders.

This isn't hard to do at all. I see loads of websites trying to sell
something each and everyday and half of them do not have a way
of collecting the visitor's email address. Why? Boy they don't know
what they are missing.

The size of your opt in mailing list is everything. Once you have a
big enough list, you can start making money in a whole variety of ways.

Example #1: Contact another company who has something that
would benefit your subscribers. Tell them that you will put their ad
at the top of your newsletter for 20% of all sales that come in as a
result. That is an easily executed technique that will pay you money
for an extra 10 minutes of work.

Example #2: If you have an informative newsletter that people like
reading, then you can charge for advertisers. I have seen a lot of
people who charge by the thousand for an ad. I charge a flat rate
for a four line ad for mine.

Example #3: As mentioned above, you can do special promotions with
your list that can bring in more sales. Not only can you do them for
your products, but ask another company if they will give your customers
a special discount if you do the work to get them to buy. Again, very
easy to do and very profitable.

Example #4: Free advertising- Trade ads with other ezine publishers
for free advertising. There are plenty of newsletters out there that would
be happy to trade ads with you. Just make sure that their subscriber
base is somewhat close to yours.

Once you have a few thousand people that are interested in your products
or services signed up to your list, it is all "cream cheese" from there.

An informative newsletter is what I would choose to go with if you can.
With your own newsletter, you can do all of the above techniques and
more. Not only can you use it to charge for advertisers, announce your
products and/or special promotions, but you can also build respect and
learn from your subscribers to.

You can easily build respect with your list by sending them informative
articles, or giving away free advice. After I send out my newsletter, I
get lots of questions about marketing techniques and websites. I always
answer them the best way possible to gain trust and maybe even an
online friend. The more friends you have online, the better off you will
be.

You can also use your newsletter to build traffic. Advertise it everywhere
as a free informative newsletter to get people to your site. Not only will
this increase your subscriber base, but will also get you many hits.

So how do I get subscribers to my newsletter?

Well you need to list them with every newsletter listing service you can.
Here are just a few:

You should also create a page for your newsletter that describes
what is in each issue and also give away previous issues. On the
page you should make it easy for your visitors to subscribe. Then,
submit your page to all of the search engines.

This is just the beginning of creating an profitable newsletter.

======================Joke of the Day=====================
From: "Laurie Delk" <delk@columbia.total-web.net>

A man came home from work late again, tired and irritated, to find his
5-year old son waiting for him at the door.  "Daddy, may I ask you a
question?"

"Yeah, sure, what is it?" replied the man.

"Daddy, how much money do you make an hour?"

"That's none of your business.  What makes you ask such a thing?" the
man  said angrily.

"I just want to know.  Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?"
pleaded the little boy.

"If you must know, I make $20.00 an hour."

"Oh," the little boy replied, head bowed.

Looking up, he said, "Daddy, may I borrow $10.00 please?"

The father was furious.  "If the only reason you wanted to know how
much money I make is just so you can borrow some to buy a silly toy or
some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and
go to bed.  Think about why you're being so selfish.  I work long,
hard hours everyday and don't have time for such childish games."

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.  The man
sat down and started to get even madder about the little boy's
questioning.  How dare he ask such questions only to get some money.
After an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think he
may have been a little hard on his son.  Maybe there was something he
really needed to buy with that $10.00 and he really didn't ask for
money very often.  The man went to the door of the little boy's room
and opened the door.

"Are you asleep son?" he asked.

"No daddy, I'm awake," replied the boy.

"I've been thinking, may be I was too hard on you earlier," said the
man. "It's been a long day and I took my aggravation out on you.
Here's that $10.00 you asked for."

The little boy sat straight up, beaming. "Oh, thank you daddy" he
yelled.  Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled out some more
crumpled up bills.  The man, seeing that the boy already had money,
started to get angry again.
The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at the
man.

"Why did you want more money if you already had some?" the father
grumbled.

"Because I didn't have enough, but now I do," the little boy replied.
"Daddy, I have $20.00 now.  Can I buy an hour of your time?"
