                                        ----===(*)===-----

Somtimes you can get good testimonial  if things go wrong. :)
About two weeks ago I was making some changes to  the back-end
of AdlandPro classified and switched servers which took about
20 minutes. During this time some of new submited ads to the
previous server were not updated to the newer one.
As a result of this, I recived following message.

Simple Ideas to Increase Traffic for Profit

My name is Robert Olson and even though I have only been a computer user and online
for about 8 months, I have some great ideas to share. What could you possibly learn
from someone as new to online marketing as myself you might ask. Well,  I do have a
marketing background from the mailorder industry where I sponsored thousands of
people and sold as much in products and services. In my short time online I have
created a webpage with enough traffic to be ranked as the #2 Adland Classified site
out of some 4000+ affiliates for the 1st week of January. I may not hold this rank
but
it is way up there for right now!
Because of the traffic that comes to my Adland Classified webpage, I am receiving
checks from 7 different internet companies.  I also have created a discussion forum
and  a new ezine with the first couple hundred subscribers.

First, as far as my success on the internet is concerned, I owe an awful lot to
Adland and Bogdan Fiedur.  As an Adland affiliate, I was able to obtain an Adland
Classified Adsite.
Because of this free site, I was able to attract nearly 2000 visitors in the first
week of the new year. Because of the way Adland is setup, you can place  ad copy,
text banners or graphic banners above and below the Adland Classified section.
Here is how this helps!

Visitors do come for the free classified ads but if you have a free classified
adsite, they will also be exposed to all of your ad copy and banner ads that can link
them to your other websites or affiliate programs. See an example here:
http://freeyellow.com/members8/freewebpromote/adland.html

One of the first things you need to do is to learn a few tricks on writing ad copy
that will make people want to click on your links. I have an article on an
autoresponder
that can help you with this important subject. It will teach you a simple formula for
writing ad copy that pulls! This will help you with writing ad headlines, webpage
headlines, meta tag titles, discriptions and ad copy in general.
The email for the article is: formula@sendfree.com   It really doesn't matter how many
ads you place.... if you don't know how to write an ad that grabs the readers
attention, you
will get few if any responses.

After you have spent a little time learning to write attention grabbing ad copy, try
posting at a few Yahoo! Clubs and some of the Delphi Forums. They both have search
engines to help you find the clubs or forums to fit your needs. I advised my daughter
to use
these for her Photo Pageant website and she had her first 12 singups within a hour.
Find
places where you can narrow your target market down to the bullseye and you will see
some great results.

There is so much more I could help you with but space is limited here. Visit my
website, get a free subscription to my ezine FreeWebPromote and place your free ads
on 4200+ high traffic adsites with just one insertion! Come visit today... and see
what else
is Free!

From: billyjoe@gorge.net (William J. Viers)
Subject: Optimize your Site (Was I guess I'm just frustrated at this point)

Bogdan,
Reviewing some of the frustrations expressed in your newsletter by individuals trying
to obtain a better presence on the Web and improve sales, I have some suggestions.

Spending 4 to 8 hours per day searching and researching internet to find good
resources for my web site, I notice that many persons have not learned how to
optimize their web sites.

Sites, that I call banner rich, become very slow loading. Visitors are lost, due to
slow loading pages, before they even view the site.

One thing I have done is to try to eliminate images and banners as much as possible.
Instead, I design tables in varying widths with color backgrounds and mixed color
text to substitute for banners. Cuts down on bytes.

This works well in a number of ways. The affiliate program animation byte eating
banners are eliminated. You are able to put a text sales message that can either be
somewhat longer or shorter to feature a product.  You can size the table to any size
you desire.

I use a table at the bottom of every page that is the width of my body table above.
This table contains about three key messages on one line. Each message contains the
link to the affiliate program I am promoting in that table. The table is usually not
more than 40 to 60 pixels high. It is just a good sign off footer for a web page and
does not get in the way of my main body content.

The next thing that I have noticed is the lack of code optimization. It is essential
to know HTML (easy to learn). The WYSIWYG web site building programs just load up
with unnecessary code causing web pages to load slowly. Those using Front Page will
find much unnecessary code in the structure of their web pages.

Their are some programs available that "strip" code, to make it more browser
compatible. I just downloaded a program called "1st Page 2000"
(http://www.evrsoft.com/1stpage/), free download, which has tools that validate your
code and compress the code so pages will load faster in browsers. Compressing is
basically stripping code, taking out all the extra unnecessary coding that clutter.

One other noticeable problem relates to getting too much on a page. One web site I
visited scrolled down 25 windows and contained over 20 banners plus a good many
unnecessary images. This web page would be more effective removing many of the
images, then breaking the page into three or four fast loading pages.

Browsing the internet, you find many variations of web design. Side bars. Double
sidbars. No side bars. Mapped pages. Bells and whistle sites. Everyone is seeking a
way to develop a presence. Consider that Americans only visit on the average of 11
unique web sites a month, spend an average of 7 hours 30 minutes and 52 seconds per
month on the internet, spend an average of 31 minutes online pers session and visit
an average of 3 sites per session, and spend 10 and 1/3 minutes maximum per site and
on the average of 1 minute and 58 seconds viewing per web page. This means, a web
site must be appealing, fast loading and ready for visitors. So one must be
constantly optimizing, stripping, shortening, compacting, compressing in order to
capture the short attention and time of the internet visitor.

Lack of optimization and compression of web sites may well be one of the key reasons
web developers trying to make a dollar are failing.

==================================================

Hello there all. I have been following the discussions on this newsletter for a while
now, and I'm glad to see I'm not alone. I've been working on this since 1996, and so
far have yet to be convinced that there is any serious money to be made by the 'litle
guys' - Thats us folks. Indeed, I'm yet to be convinced that there is _any_ money to
be made, let alone serious money. Why? It comes down to money, just like in bricks
and mortar business. The Big Players can afford to advertise. We can't. So what do
you do? Here's what I do now. Like I said, I have come to this after about four years
of trying everything I could think of.
1. Focus on a area that interests _you_.  My interests are : Writing, graphics, art,
sound. Both traditional and electronic.
2. Develop your web site(s) around your interests. That way, you give the material on
the site an authoritative feel.
3. Keep your index page simple, and focused on your target people. Let me give you
some examples:
The drive-yourself-holiday crowd. Older people, retirees etc. Old computers - or
at least badly set up. Slow. so keep your pages simple, and quick loading. See
http://www.swansea-holiday.com.au for an example.
The music lovers. If you play music on your computer, it's generally tweeked up,
fast, and well connected. So get adventurous with the opening pages. Attractive. See:
http://quantum-radio.net  or out here, http://liquidaudio.chalmers.com.au   (Their
both the same)
The book lovers and artists, and designers. Lots of interesting things, not too
simple, and still reasonably quick loading.. See http://www.chalmers.com.au
The AFVN Vietnam Veterans interest group... Generally another group of older
persons. See: http://4qir.quantum-radio.net.au

So. You get the picture. Notice the common theme through out. Writing, Books,
Graphics, ClipArt, Sound and Music. Yes, well, it's taken me 4 years to arrive at
this mix. And that only in the last few weeks. It's all been there, but not in any
cohesive form. Still a lot of work to do.

I can tell you though. Of all the ways of making money, the ony one that has returned
anything to date, is Amazon.com. and I suspect that is because I have had that site
up for nearly the full 4 years in one form or another. I'll see what happens now that
I have things together a bit better.

I use Webposition Gold (http://webposition.chalmers.com.au) exclusively. It's worth
ever penny I paid for it. I keep a FFA links list on a secondary server, just as a
"junk room" that people may like to browse. I modified it, so that clicking on a link
opens another window, and doesn't take your visitor off your site. As for putting
your own pages onto the ffa sites...  haven't seen a single caller as a result of
that in four years.
When it comes to search engines, you have to be patient. The main ones can take up to
3 months to index you. You MUST submit each week - See the excellent article at
http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/99/31/index1a.html?tw=e-business, its called
Sending Search-Engine Traffic To Your Site. It is short, and really informative.

Which reminds me, never put a banner or link on your page that takes people off-site.
If you must, put it into a javascript that causes it to open in its own window, thus
keeping people on your site.

As for all those "Make 5,000 a week" things.  I look at it this way. If I could make
5000 a week in my sleep, you'd have to contact me on Bali, or some other tropical
island. I certainly wouldn't be telling you how to do it :-)

So Pat... keep at it. Treat it as a hobby, and don't be disappointed when you don't
make any money. The only ones who do are MSNBC anat the likes. Even Amazon hasn't
turned a profit yet....

cheers
Robert

Subject: If you need to accept US currencies

Kia ora Bogdan,
I am a little late with this request, but I am just now doing the "catch up
" after the Christmas rush...phew!!

There was an article in your Adland's digest #148 by Rina
"If you need to accept US currencies, you only need to have a US Savings or
Current
Account.  Here are some sites with US payment systems:-
http://www.eccx.com/cj_apply2.html?AID=16038&PID=65941
http://www.cardacceptance.com/cgi-bin/RATS.cgi?14347-authorizenet.htm "
Joan and I have been trying unsuccessfully to open a USA bank account from
here for over a year now and when I read Rina's article I wondered if they
or any other Adlanders may be able to point us in the right direction.
We are in New Zealand and have tried EVERY bank here and every USA bank we
can find on the Internet. I have also personally phoned several banks in the
USA all without any luck whatsoever :((
I even had my father go to a bank in LA when he was over there but he umm
well "muffed it " and we STILL do not have a USA cheque account.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Fiona :)

And now a wee tip I thought was kinda handy for checking outside links to
your website. I found this very useful to check to see if the information on
links to your site is correct and see whether sites that are supposed to be
reciprocal linked with yours actually are (rather than manually going
through each one yourself!)
Or even to see if you are linked to any sites you don't wish to be
associated with.
Also it can give you an idea of how many other sites have valid links to
your website. This can be important for SEs that count links to your site as
part of their criteria for placement.
Go to Altavista and type in  "link:www.yoursite.com" into their search.
It will return a list of sites with links to your URL

Fiona :)

Subject: homebasedscams.com

Adland Readers,

I just read Edward's post on Adlands continuing discussion board about
homebasedscams.com,  Mazu Publishing is Mr Matt Gagnon and I, even though
holding a degree in Marketing, was convinced by his sales copy to order his
book. Do you know what I got? The first half of the book is everything that
you see on his website, the middle of this book is telling you that you can
make millions from mailorder of all things, and the rest of his book is a
sales letter telling you to order his training course on HOW TO mail order.
I am embarassed to say that I fell for this.

By the time you weed through all of the typos and comments about how 'great'
he is, you are left with NOTHING. No value in this so called book of his.
One long tribute to Matt Gagnon and his sales letter!

Deciding that I would just write it off to my own stupidity, I said nothing.
Behold! An email from Matt Gagnon trying to sell me even more wothless info
products. I replied to him in the most professional manner that I could
muster up requesting a refund due to my dissatisfaction - he emailed me back
saying NO REFUND! I sent various emails to this man asking him how he could
mislead the public, take their money, and then not back up what he states
ALL over his pages!

His answers to me were that it was my own fault - I have NEVER been treated
by ANY business person in such a hostile manner. I truly tried to remain
calm as I wanted my money back, I told Mr Gagnon that I felt extremely
mislead, and because he 'claims' that he is ethical and all other
opportunities are scams - that he must then back up his guarantee. Guess
what,

He will only refund your price for the book IF you get into the business
that he suggests and can PROVE to him that you tried mailorder? Of course,
you have to order his $499, $699, or more mailorder package to find out
"how" to run such a business!

If he wants to sell a mailorder course Great - Tell those that are
interested in such a venture and then offer them the course. Do not target
people with NO interest in such a business, by the way, he also neglects to
tell you that any successful mailorder venture will take an investment of
$25,000 Minimum.

I am not exagerating this book has NO Value it gives No information -
No wonder people fear business opportunities over the 'Net with sharks like
Mr Gagnon, it will be a wonder if any of us netpreneurs survive!

Since, I am involved with a real program with a company that has treated
myself and others that I have introduced with exeptional service, value, and
REAL business training.

I won't take any more of your time but I wanted you to know that I
appreciate your comments I have been waiting for someone to question this
man and his business practices. I hope that he reads this as well, if enough
people know about him, maybe he will realize that it is no way to run a
business!

Yours in Success,

Domain Gateway Pages
by Tobe Johnson

Domain Gateway Pages

Many affiliate sites today create self-duplicating web pages for
affiliates  to use.  The web site URL often looks something like
http://www.company_site.com/xxxyyy/?your_name&zzz or one of
hundreds of  variations of this.  This is not bad in itself,
however, if you are serious about making money via the Internet,
there is one piece that is a MUST for Internet Marketers.  It is
called a DOMAIN GATEWAY PAGE.

What is a domain gateway page? A domain gateway page is a web
site address such as http://www.your-name.com set up so that when
someone access' your web site, they get YOUR information for your
affiliate program (whatever affiliate program you are marketing).
For example, instead of marketing
http://www.collector-club.com/DET/members/101321/index.shtml (a
sample company URL assigned to you from net detective), you would
market http://your-name.com instead and it would pull up your net
detective page in this shorter URL.  More specifics on this will
follow.

Why is a domain gateway page a MUST?

1--No Lost Orders:

When someone visits
http://www.company_site.com/?your-id=xxxxxxyyy the tendency that
happens quite often is that the /?your-id=xxxxxxyyy part of the
URL will get left off the URL (web address); so you are no longer
get credited for the order.  Another common problem is that a
visitor gets the long complicated URL wrong (ie:
http://www.collector-club.com/DET/members/101321/index.shtml); so
again it is a lost order for you.  What happens if they come back
to the main site in the future and don't put in your id#?  You
got it.  It's another lost order for you.

Another problem with associate program self-duplicating pages is
that some search engines don't accept the /?your-id=xxxxxxyyy
portion of a URL.  As you go out and market your site across the
Internet, some (many) of the search engines will not accept the
/?your-id=xxxxxxyyy in the address, so will drop that part of the
address.... thus, people get dumped into the main company site
instead of your site.....more of your orders get lost or
redirected to the main company site.

Now, don't get me wrong.  I am not bashing associate programs or
the way their self-duplicating pages are set up.  I am simply
providing information to help you use those programs more
effectively.

2--Business centered marketing:

With your own domain name, you can do all of your marketing by
promoting http://www.your-name.com vs. another web site name.
This will also allow you to have your email address as
you@your-name.com (it can be automatically forwarded into
wherever you currently check your email, so nothing on your end
has to change).  This puts the focus of your marketing efforts
around YOU and YOUR domain name vs. the vendor company's domain
name and creates a business centric marketing stategy for you.
You can then set up additional businesses around this same name
to market additional products.... such as
http://www.your-name.com/company2/ and
http://www.your-name.com/company3/.   Now, what happens if someone
drops off the /company2/ portion of that URL?  They are dumped
into another of YOUR companies and you never loose a potential
client!

Here is an example of business centered marketing model that I
use.  I have two sites in which I promote (among others).  Here
are their cumbersome URLs:
http://www.collector-club.com/DET/members/101321/index.shtml
http://www.outsource2000.com/?id=908596093

I market these two sites
as:
http://ahwa.com/netdetective/

http://ahwa.com

My email is sent out as me@ahwa.com.  When I join other associate
programs, I create new gateway pages on my own domain such as
http://ahwa.com/new-program/.  My entire business and marketing
strategy is centered around MY domain name, not someone else's.

3--Higher order ratios & portability:

The biggest reason for having your own domain gateway page is
that with a domain site (such as www.your-name.com) you will get
a higher ratio of orders (signups) to visitors because you will
loose fewer of your potential clients to the company site.

If you ever decide to move your domain to another host provider
or begin to promote a new product/service, all the hundreds or
thousands of links across the Internet that are currently
pointing to you will continue to point to you.  That is not the
case if you have a web page such as
http://www.some-other-company.com/your_name/.   If you ever move
your sub-page to someone else's domain, you will loose all the
work and effort you put into building links to your original
page.

4--Domains names are cheap:

You can get your own domain (your-name.com) hosted by a good web
site host provider for as little as $20.00 per month w/ a $20.00
set up fee (and sometimes cheaper).  You will charged $35.00 per
year to have the name registered with Internic.  You will be
billed the first two years Internic fee in advance.  So, for the
cost of one or two orders (depending upon what you are marketing)
you can pay for your domain name and site set-up.  If you want a
company with a specialty in low cost domain gateway pages visit
http://www.johnsons.net/.

It is possible to make money with the many affiliate and
associate programs.  I know of people who do nothing but work
their associate programs and are making thousands of dollars a
year at it.  With a little knowledge and advance planning, you
can also.

======================Joke of the Day=====================
From: "Gift Ideas by JoFi New Zealand" <info@jofi.net>

This is not really a joke but  this writing  has a deep meaning.

Thanks  Fiona

One day an expert in time management was speaking to a group of
business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration those
students will never forget.  As he stood in front of the group of high powered
overachievers he said, "Okay, time for a quiz."  Then he pulled out a
one-gallon, wide-mouthed Mason jar and set it on the table in front of
him. Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully
placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the
top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, "Is this jar full?"
Everyone in the class said, "Yes." Then he said, "Really?" He
reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. Then he
dumped some gravel in and shook the jar causing pieces of gravel to work
themselves down into the space between the big rocks. Then he asked
the group once more, "Is the jar full?" By this time the class was on to
him. "Probably not," one of them answered.  "Good!" he replied.
He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He
started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all of the spaces left
between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, "Is
this jar full?" No!" the class shouted. Once again he said, "Good."
Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until
the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and asked,
"What is the point of this illustration?"  One eager beaver raised his
hand and said, "The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if
you try really hard you can always fit some more things in it!"
"No," the speaker replied, "that's not the point. The truth this
illustration teaches us is: If you don't put the big rocks in first,
you'll never get them in at all."  What are the 'big rocks' in
your life? Your children; your loved ones; your education; your dreams; a
worthy cause; teaching or mentoring others; doing things that you
love; time for yourself; your health; your significant other.
Remember to put these BIG ROCKS in first or you'll never get them in
at all. If you sweat the little stuff (the gravel, the sand) then you'll
fill your life with little things you worry about that don't really
matter, and you'll never have the real quality time you need to spend
on the big, important stuff (the big rocks). So, tonight, or in the
morning, when you are reflecting on this short story, ask yourself this
question: What are the 'big rocks' in my life? Then, put those in
your jar first.
