It seems like marketing skills are almost as important
as actual trade itself.
I don't want to repeat my story, which I already had mentioned
couple times  in this digest but to stress the fact how important
marketing is I will just outline it here again.
About three years ago I started my own internet company called
Softfornet Solutions Ltd with computer consulting in mind.

After number of unproductive months of trying to interest clients
in my   services, I realized that I was  lacking marketing skills.
Then I decided to build online application which would
demonstrate my abilities which  would be easily accessible over
the internet. I started idea of free classifieds which was part of above
mentioned site. After promoting this new concepts for a few months
my site started getting visitors and  although I still wasn't getting
any clients interested in my skills I felt like I was doing something.
I started exploring online resources and learning marketing.
I even built page  which links to these sites.

After some time I started getting requests for advertising on my site.
This was about a year ago.
Today my site at http://www.adlandpro.com gets about 4,000 unique visitors
per day and I'm doing entirely different things I  imagined I would be doing.
This is customer support, respnse to  customer feedback and working on
getting more customers. Am I having fun? You bet I do. I run my own business
successfully and growing. I still get bit time to do programming, which I like
but most of the  time I'm  learning more marketing, building alliances and
working on new ideas.

What is the conclusion from the above?
If your market is saturated with  solution providers, your role is to find
hole in that market and provide something unique which others are
not doing or are not too good at it. You said in your previous email that
you love what you are doing. Remember if you want to run your own
business you have to take care of things which are associated with.
This not always will be what you love.
Finding customers is hardest part and  this is where  marketing
comes in place. If you don't want to learn marking yourself, you have
to hire somebody to do it for you, and with your type of business you have
to look around locally. Your website can be of some help, but  you need
to get some recognition  in "walking distance" from your location.
If you want to use internet to expend your business, provide some
sort of free resources so peple will visit you and then let them know
about your primary business.

My belief is that internet at its current stage is suited well for services
or products which can be ordered online and delivered  over the
mail or the internet without human interaction.  Anything else works
only for companies which  use internet to build image and have sufficient
funds to do that and  earn  brand recognition.

.  The best advise is to always lead off with the BENEFITS.  People want to
know what you can do for them FIRST.  The site has some good benefit laden
headlines and text which should be the lead-in material.  Grab the readers
attention!  Tell them what you can do for them!

Your Long Domain Name "Questions &  Answers"

This article is a follow-up to the email we sent you a
couple of weeks ago regarding the new 67 character domain
names. In our last email we cleared up a few of the key
questions people had been sending to us regarding the long
domain names but after our initial email we kept receiving
even more brain teasing questions that we definitely wanted
to answer. The result? This article, containing all of the
indepth answers to all of the most common questions we have
constantly been receiving.

The DOT.COM gold rush is still going strong and we want to
clear up any misconceptions and confusion regarding this
exciting opportunity. Below I have included a FAQ
(Frequently Asked Question) section that will hopefully
answer the majority of the questions that we have been
receiving and put many people's minds at rest.


FAQ Regarding 67 Character Domain Names

1) Will the long domain names really be of value?

Answer: This is definitely one of the most popular question
that we have been receiving over the last few weeks and
probably one of the most important. The answer is a simple
one... DOT.COM address's are worth their weight in gold and
this is the last opportunity to get the domain names you
really want! I cannot stress the value of having a good
DOT.COM address, we have people everyday asking "I have I
great DOT.NET address, is this as good as DOT.COM." and
each time I tell them same thing.

DOT.COM addresses are the industry standard when people talk
about the Internet it is referred to as DOT.COM. Sure it is
great to have a DOT.NET address... IF you already own the
DOT.COM. When people think of a domain name they
automatically think DOT.COM. Even the web browsers will
default to DOT.COM if no extension is specified.

Imagine the customers you are going to lose if your
competitors have the DOT.COM address and you have the
DOT.NET. I guarantee you, you are losing hundreds if not
thousands of your hard earned visitors just because of a
simple domain extension.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to scare you into
registering new domains. I just want everyone to realize the
importance of having a DOT.COM address as your primary
domain and now is your final opportunity to get that domain
name that is going to suit your website with out having to
pay an arm and a leg!

2) Why are other domain name registration companies not
taking registrations for long domain names? Is this some
kind of scam?

Answer: First of all I will start by saying I understand
everyone's skepticism, in fact I was probably the most
skeptical of all when I first heard of this amazing
opportunity. I thought it sounded almost to good to be true,
so of course I had to do my homework to!

One of the first things I did when I heard of the long
domain names was call and verify with network solutions that
this was not a hoax. Since Network Solutions is the biggest
domain name company on the Internet I felt very confident I
would get an explanation.

When I called Network Solutions I found out 2 things:

a) Yes you could register 67 character domain names and they
are legitimate.

b) No we won't register anything over 27 characters because
our ordering systems are not setup to handle anything
bigger.

Simple! Yes they are real and the only reason Network
Solutions is not taking registrations yet is because they
have to upgrade their system! Does this mean that the domain
names are not supported? NO! It only means that Network
solutions cannot take registrations. This is why we
recommend other companies!

3) Where can I get my new 67 character domain name hosted?
My ISP does not support anything over 27 characters.

Answer: We have heard from a few of our customers that they
are having troubles getting their new domain name hosted at
their ISP. Well if your ISP does not support the new domain
names they will be soon because they are going to be behind
the times if they don't.

4) How many keywords should I put in my domain name?

Answer: The answer to this question actually varies
depending on what you want to do with your domain name so I
am going to break it down for you.

If you are registering a domain name that is going to be
used strictly to get you ranked in the search engines you
want to use as many keywords as possible. For example if you
had a website that was dedicated to fly fishing in Canada
you could use something like:

www.Fly-Fishing-Canada-Lakes-Rivers.com

This would be great for the search engines because it covers
all of your critical keywords all in the URL. On the other
hand we have had many people asking if they should repeat
their keywords in the URL. For example:

www.fly-fishing-fly-fishing-fly-fishing.com

Is this a good idea? Definitely not! The only thing this may
accomplish is getting you accused of spamming the search
engines, a very quick way to lose the rankings you have been
trying so hard to achieve.

In summary as long as all of your critical keywords are
covered in the domain name, you have enough.

5) Do search engines prefer hyphens?

Answer: We are still receiving numerous questions asking us
if you should use hyphens or not in your search engines.

The answer is simple. If you are trying to increase your
search engine ranking USE HYPHENS. You have to remember that
search engines are just computers and if you do not use
hyphens it can be very difficult to parse the URL for the
keywords. The hyphens give the search engines some means of
telling your keywords apart.

On the other hand if you are registering a domain name for
advertising purposes other than search engines you DO NOT
want to use hyphens. It has been proven time and time again
that the average person surfing the web finds it easier to
type in a URL without hyphens. You have to make your website
as easy to locate as possible and by adding any punctuation
(ie. hyphens) you are going to lose your hard earned
visitors!

In summary if you want to appeal to the search engines make
sure you use hyphens and if you want to appeal to the
average person surfing the web do not use hyphens. But do
you know what the easiest way to guarantee success is?
REGISTER BOTH! There is no better way to ensure that you are
not losing visitors by registering the URL with hyphens and
the URL without hyphens.

6) How do I sell my domain name after I have registered it?

Answer: We have had hundreds of people that have registered
the long domain names in hope of being able to sell them for
a profit down the road. Many people have made huge profits
doing this with very little effort and with the new 67
character domain names coming available this opportunity has
expanded.

If you have come up with a great domain name and want to
make a quick return on it the solution is simple... SELL IT.
We have many people asking the same question "Where so I go
to sell a domain name?". Here is our suggestion. Go to
http://www.wodex.com. Here you can post a domain name for
sale and they it is free.

7) Do all of the browsers support the long domain names?

Answer: Just about every browser available supports the 67
character domain names. There is only one known issue so far
and that is with Netscape. You may receive an error with any
domain names that are over 59 characters. There has been
some conflicting information on this because only some
people are having the problem. But if this is a real problem
Netscape is going to be taking care of it shortly. Because
as more and more long domain names are registered the less
and less people will use their browser if they don't support
the long domain names.

We have tested these domain names with the Internet Explorer
3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 and it works fine with all of them.

8) How long should my domain name be before it is to long?

Answer: Once your domain name loses it's catch or becomes
hard to remember it is going to be to long. Lets take our
company name for example:

www.InternetMarketingChallenge.com

Is this hard to remember? No! It is the name of our company
and is not easily forgotten. Anyone who knows of our company
is going to recognize this name. On the other hand if we
chose something like:

www.TheInternetMarketingChallengeWebsite.com

This is pushing it. This is going to have people wondering
and I guarantee that we would lose visitors because of the
length and unnecessary words. Like I have said before if you
are going to register a catchy phrase you want to keep it as
simple as possible. Realistically anything over 50
characters could be a little tough to remember.

This leads me to the next commonly asked question...

9) How will people remember such a long domain name?

Answer: There is a very simple answer to this... IT MUST BE
CATCHY! If it is not the name of your company it must be
catchy so that it sticks out in peoples minds.

I hope this has put your mind at ease and answered all of
your long domain name questions. DOT.COM addresses are still
a hot commodity on the Internet right now and are being
snatched up at lightening speed. If you don't take advantage

I've been selling online and/or the Internet since 1997. And, partly doe to
limited funds, haven't spent money on advertising. I learned from prior mail
order biz to spend after startup advertising on more only from actual
earnings. That is, not use earnings on self but for the business till I could
safely do so without harming the growing business.

So I haven't done certain things some say one *has* to do to succeed in
online/Internet biz. Despite all the hype, I knew from the beginning it would
take years to build up an online/Internet business. Despite my simplistic
approach I did quite well during the holiday-sales season last year. Not
enough to live on, but I didn't expect to. So my online/Internet expense of
doing business online is the AOL ISP monthly charge of $21.95 and the GTE
one-way unlimited-time phone charge monthly of $23.00!

My approach is based on the fact that AOL has 22,000,000+ members in many
nations. So, even though my website is still on AOL's Hometown server,
without my own dot.com domain name, it's searchable via these members. And I
also do a lot of biz via Usenet Newsgroups commercial boards.

So, regardless of what the so-called or real experts tell you, my advice is
to start small and grow gradually with minimal expense till you can safely do
otherwise. My "outdated" approach also causes my pages to open fast, even
with a slow 2400 modem!

newsletter. I couldn't agree more. I had to smile at the bit below... Thats
me as well. :-)  I keep getting sidetracked, but being here for the
longhaul - 4 years now!!! I'm slowly learning to get it right. And you are
exactly right. Passion is the word.  Finally I discovered it. I love books,
writing, art, philosophy, and helping people. I'm a high school teacher by
profession, semi-retired. So, my site is becoming not only a book place, but
a place where people can find perhaps the resource they want. I'm in the
proces of building that part now. I started with the Banner Exchange,
(http:www/chalmers.com.au/webadverts/ads_admin.pl) and I'm slowly adding to
that. Watch this space as they say... I'm building a Tip,Tricks and Traps
section to help WebDesigners and it will be Free, not a how-to-make-money
thing, but a web design thing. HTML and all that tricky design stuff.

How?  By constantly revising my websites to reflect my true
passions.  Then finding ways to implement my passions into
products people can use or enjoy in their daily life.

customer base because I know I'm on the Internet for the
long run.  I don't want the quick buck, I want a steady
stream of income which allows me the freedom to continue
doing my passions.  Is it working?  Yes and it will work for

Subject:Secure and unsecure order options


Kia ora,
I have a question for the group please.
I have always made secure and unsecure order options available to our
customers.
 I believed the reason for doing this was for people who had older style
browsers that could not use secure order pages.
With the advent of Y2K, am I correct in assuming that these older  browsers
would have to have been updated.... therefore unsecure order pages would no
longer be required???
(Am just trying to save myself a little time here :))

Rodger,here! Is it for but the large successes we live,and if so,who do we
have give us the definition? Is the "Wizard" always right? Or maybe we need
to assess the definition given by a "blind person". Surely both have "great
successes",but surely,they differ vastly by definition.
Point is,for myself,being "new" to this world of computereze,just finding a
new program,or the answer to a minor problem,can be deemed "great success".
And those that have a command of "anything",should take "great joy" in
sharing it with others. Sadly,we all tend to talk from a hilltop. Talking in
terms,verbage,that while we think it is impressive,those seeking to
learn,think we're jerks. And you know what? They are right! How many of us
with,let's say a specific knowledge,tend to "Lord it".To hold it out as some
great possession,instead of really making it great,making ourselves great,by
freely sharing,by withholding those comments that say:"what are you
stupid",for the answer must of course be..YES..just as you were at one time.
And lastly,by speaking in simple english. One does not necessarily impress
another with big words,but more so with being able to relate,to
translate,knowledge to that standard one is talking to.In other
words.."KISS:Keep It Simple Stupid" Finally,being new. I think I found a new
abbreviation for us to use.Please tell me if I'm mistaken. (NRR:No Response

On the good side:
I like the overall look of your site.  The background is pleasant and the text fairly
easy to read.  Most importantly, you seem to have a lot of content!  That's usually
what's missing on most sites.  I admit I haven't checked out your whole site and
all the referrals yet, but there's so much to see and do!

Potential problems:
75% of visitors will not scroll down a long page.  That doesn't mean you have to
arbitrarily shorten your pages.  You might consider placing your most profitable
and/or high-traffic links at the top of the page where visitors will get to see them
right away without having to search for them.  Also, if you are using the "default"
font size, you might consider going up to a "defined" font at 12 pitch or higher for
most of your text, especially headings. Most users don't have a clue of how to
customize their browsers' settings, so consider doing it for them.
Also, although the "back" button is convenient and well used, consider making links
that go off your site open in their own new browser windows, it'll keep your pages
"in view" longer!

I'm puzzled:
How did you get that neat PSP Golden Globe Web Award in you lower lefthand
corner?

7 Tips For Better Ad Results

Most people know Advertising in Ezines really can be
profitable. But what should you be aware of before you
spend your money. Here are some guide lines to help you.

1. Subscribe or make sure you did.

This may sound silly but if your on their list and didn't
subscribe how did you get on it? Some people build their
lists from FFA pages and other means. Look for an Ezine
that is 100% opt in. This is important because the people
on the list actually want to receive it.

2. Are Back Issues available or do they have a Website?

Look at back issues or the website. See if they promote
the same program as yours or ran ads for the same one.
These 2 things might hurt your response. People on the
internet like "New" things.

3. Look at the Content and the Format.

Do they write their own articles? I always like reading
something original. Reading their work gives you some
insight to the type of person you are dealing with.

Does the Format look nice and neat or is it sloppy?
A nice format is easier to read and follow. It shows
an attention to detail.

4. Subscription Size versus Ad Cost.

Prices vary greatly in this area. Shop around, more expensive
does not necessarily mean you'll get better responses.

5. How many ads per issue?

If they use to many ads your might get lost. People
many times will just skip over the classified ad section.
I usually opt for either solo mailings or my favorite is
Top Spot ads. These work the best for me.

6.Track your ads.

A very important element is the track your responses. 2 easy
ways to do this are: You can use an autoresponder and key
the subject. mailto: randyz@xyz.net?subject=myad. You'll
know by the responses that have "myad" as a subject how it
pulled.

Another way is to setup a web page with a counter and
redirection script. These are some basic things you can do
very easily.

I can't emphasize how important tracking is. Without
it your just shooting in the dark.

7. Contact with the publisher.

I like to make contact with the author. I usually ask when the
next sponsor spot is available. Can I save by buying multiple
ads? How many lines can the sponsor ad be?

What I am looking for is what type of response I get.
Did they try to answer all my questions? Did I have to
wait more than a few days for a response?

You'll come to appreciate publishers that respond quickly.
They usually deal with problems that arise in the same manner.

These are some things to get you started. Good luck in
promoting your programs.

FREE? It Still Works?

Hello Everyone!

How's your business? Fine I hope!

We're all are aware of the many advances in technologies and how
quickly things can become obsolete. Today we are going to go back
to the basics and talk about on of the most effective methods of
marketing, which has always worked since the stone ages : ) and will
also work for you in your business today. It's using the old Freebies.
Yes, this still does work, but it's amazing how many have negated this
from there marketing arsenal.

Everyday I receive emails, read posts and deal with clients who ask,
"What can I do to get more business? or How can I get more visitors
to my site?" The first thing I suggest is, "What can you give away?"

How many people do you know, who don't like to get things for free?
Everyone, right? If that being so, do you think this will work in your
business?

I once had a client who ran a local barber shop and it was his Grand
Opening. He also asked the same questions. I told him, "If you want
your Grand Opening to be huge, for the first week give away one free
haircut to everyone who comes through the door." He practically
laughed in my face and rejected the idea without even thinking of its
potential.

Could you imagine the PR from this one idea? The local new stations
and the other media would have loved that story! He could've gotten
all sorts of write ups in the papers. "Local Barber Gives FREE Haircuts
To The Community!"

Besides the PR, it could've brought him tons of sales; because this
would've helped potential customers to get an idea of his work. If
they were satisfied, where do you think they're going for their next
haircut? You got it, from the guy who gave them the free cut. Plus
you'll have the best form of advertisement working for you, 'word of
mouth!' But he didn't take heed to my advice and he was out of business
within the next 3 months.

How many times have you brought products simply because they were
advertised, "Buy 2 and Get 1 FREE!" Hundreds, right? I bet many of
them were probably things you didn't even need or really wanted at the
time. The FREE item is what lured you in! This will also have the
same effect in your marketing campaign.

So the moral of the story is, FREE still works! Go right now and
try to find something you can give away! I guarantee that you'll
see an increase in your ad responses and sales!
