================== Word from publisher ====================

Greetings All

Welcome 330  new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

                                        ----===(*)===-----

In looking for solutions to my ongoing issues  with delivering
Adland Digest to Hotmail accounts, I have contacted some other
discussion lists and inquired about the problem. It turned out that
Hotmail will trash all messages which are being sent
through bulk delivery by default and to receive some of them,
there is a way by configuring it.
Please read one of the responses to my post in I-Sales Digest
which explains how to enable delivery of some of the  messages
coming to your hotmail account which are being sent as a bulk.
This is how Adland Digest is being delivered.

<---------

From: Frank Fleischer (frank@straight-poop.com)

Hotmail sent this message to all subscribers on March 10, 2000, and
presumably sends the same to all new subscribers:

"Protect Your Inbox from Junk Mail!

"Hotmail now stops "bulk mail" -- which is most often junk mail or
"spam" -- from reaching your Inbox! Our new, personalized Inbox
Protector filters out bulk mail and delivers it to the new Bulk Mail
Folder before it reaches your Inbox.

"Your personal Bulk Mail Folder is now accessible in the Folders
section of Hotmail. Messages delivered to your Bulk Mail Folder will
remain there for 30 days, before being automatically deleted. If
there are specific messages in your Bulk Mail Folder that you want
delivered to your Inbox, you can customize Inbox Protector to
automatically send them there. Click here for more information on
how to use and personalize Hotmail Inbox Protector."

The Inbox Protector gives you the option of turning it off plus some
other options, including   a box in which to enter addresses and
domains from whom mail will be directed to the Inbox.

Suggestion to alleviate this problem: Send a message to your Hotmail
subscribers informing them that to receive your publication in their
inbox they must specify it in the exceptions box, and tell them
exactly what to enter there.

------------->>

I don't use hotmail myself, but you should allow on messages coming
from account  adland-digest@softfornet.com in order to receive
Adland Digest to your hotmail account.

==========Success Story=============
From: "Patricia Odell" <NELLIE@worldshare.net>

Am I successful?  You bet!
------------------------------------------------------------

Success means different things to different
people.  To some it is fame and fortune, to others
it may be as simple as accomplishing a goal.  To
me, success is gaining respect and being accepted.
I feel that I have accomplished both of these
goals in the last eighteen months.

Eighteen months ago I knew absolutely nothing
about computers and the internet and had no one to
teach me.  I received my computer as an
anniversary gift.  I didn't know how to set it up
or even how to turn it on and off.  I read and
reread the instructions that came with it and
finally just dived in.

After getting the BEAST set up I immediately got
connected to the internet.  I didn't know what to
expect but I was eager to learn all the wonderful
secrets that the WWW was touted to contain.  I was
immediately fascinated.  In one hour I was hooked!
By the end of the first day I was browsing the web
like an expert (or so I thought).  There was so
much information to absorb that I almost went
on overload.

It took me a few months to figure out that the web
is like anywhere else. There are scams and con artists
hiding under every rock waiting for the gullible and
over eager newbies like myself to take their bait.
 My motto has always been
"Don't believe it till you can prove it".  This is
especially true on the web.  I fell for two get rich the
easy way scams before I figured out that there ain't
no way to get rich easy, not even on the web.

I seemed as if everyone and their uncle had a website.
I wanted a website.  I got a free site and started
practicing building with their "easy" site
builder.  It looked so amateurish that it shamed
me.  I didn't give up.  I knew that I could do better.

I didn't know html from peanut butter.  Java and
Perl were foreign languages to me.  The so called
"easy site builder" was proving to be "not so
easy".  This was going to be a lot harder than I
thought.( and still is )

What I needed was focus. But what would I focus
on?  There were so many things going on in that
great big world of cyberspace that it was confusing
to say the least!   I didn't have the slightest notion
what my *niche* was going to be so it was hard to
focus on just one thing.  I wanted it all!  I was like a kid
in a candy store. (or maybe a bull in a china shop is a
more apt description.)

My first site was a jumble of affiliate programs,
my original poetry and miscellaneous junk.
Nothing to make anyone want to come back after one
visit.  I'm still trying to get it right but I'm getting closer
all the time.  I knew I needed to specialize in something
but didn't know what in the WWW that would be.  I knew
I didn't want to be a marketer of internet "junk".

After much trial and error (mostly error) and
reading the comments in my guestbook, I decided
that what I do best (and have always wanted to do)
is write.  So I decided to focus on that.  What
will I write that anyone wants to read?

I was bent on having my own Ezine.  I have been reading
ezines since I got started on the web.  I thought "I can
do that".  I put a mailing list subscription box on my new
website and waited to see if anyone was interested
in what I might have to say.  In the meantime I
concentrated on what I would say and how to say
it.  I also browsed the web for any information I
could find on how to start and maintain an ezine.

Three months later  ( ready or not, world, here I come! )
I was ready to go.   I titled the newsletter
"Full Speed Ahead", a fitting title since that was the way
I was going.

With two subscribers on the mailing list and a few friends
and family that I  not so discreetly imposed upon,
I was ready to publish or perish.  Now, eight issues later I
have a subscriber list of over two hundred and have had only
three unsubs.

I have made a lot of mistakes along the way, lost files, lost ads,
even lost my entire formatting a few times.  Once my list server
let me down and the whole thing was a total mess!

Time will tell if I have found my niche.  This is
what I will concentrate on.  I have also started writing
for other ezines on occasion and I am happy to say that
my stories and articles have found approval.

Am I rich?  No.  Will I get rich?  Probably not.
Do I care?  Well, I'm not going to lie and say no.
It would be wonderful to make an e-fortune.  But, for
the present I am content that I have found
something that I am reasonably successful at.  After all,
didn't I say that, to me, success is being
accepted and respected?

Subject:  Non-English Websites SOMEHOW get onto YAHOO !!!

Yes, one can "get onto Yahoo!" quickly but I think you need to qualify that.
If one submits their site to a search engine or directory that uses the
inktomi search engine (many do including hotbot, and Yahoo!), then your site
will more than likely turn up in a search. The keyword though is "Search".
If you are to drill down through the actual directory though, you will find
that unless you have submitted to their directory you are not in their
category directory. This requires a separate submission. (They're using two
databases) You can get the full details at YAHOO! here:

Ward,
I wanted to take a minute and respond to your recent post. I see
that the moderator has offered some good suggestions that I will
look into myself!  I am currently using Topica.com
http://www.topica.com  to manage my newsletter and mailing list.
It too , is a free service and has it limitations, but has been good for
me  so far. It will address some of the concerns on your list. Just
remember, there is always some kind of price to pay for free.

As far as using an autoresponder, this is a possibility too and
could be used in conjunction with your other efforts. If you want to
check out  the best, I recommend the one that Adrian Edelman
has  created.
You can actually create your newsletter in HTML, use banners,
colors...and it has many other features. You can have an unlimited
number of accts with up to 20 responders in each, and he doesn't
charge extra for that. Also if you need it, you can arrange for more
responders to be set up at no extra cost. Your creativity is your
limit. It will also do plain text. So, if you are considering an
autoresponder, for the money, there is no better quality. And with
autoresponders, free is not the way to go unless you want to
deliver someone else's ad along with yours. You don't want to
'distract' your prospects. I have started to notice more and more
emails and newsletters starting to show up with color and HTML.
This is a very effective way to deliver a message!

If you would like to see what a response looks like with banners at
the top and bottom of an email (newsletter) send a blank e-mail
and I will show you.
<a href="mailto:2fast@quicktell.net">2Fast!</a>
To your success,

Mike

Hi Guys!
Just reading the latest issue and picked up on Ward's problem.
There's a great little list management tool developed right here in my
hometown in Oz! It's called "ZapperDapper" and has some very powerful
features which just might solve Ward's dilemma
ma. The free version works great, but has a limited database size.
Professional upgrade is well worth a look!

Hi, B. F.

If this comes off like self promotion, please delete and accept my apology.
I just don't know how to present this solution to this problem, without it
sounding a little
like self-promotion. This really is, a real time saver.

This is in response to a posting by Ward Dougherty.
RE: Mail List Problems
Date: June 18, 2000

I went through similar problems, trying to manually handle all the
incoming/out going/add/remove etc.  I have found a great solution.  I don't
usually post suggestions, however this program has saved me sooooo many
hours of sitting in front of the computer. I am affiliated with this
company, but even if I weren't, I would still suggest this program to my
friends.

It's the easiest and most effective Web-based email and database management
system on the Internet. A simple browser-based interface sets up and manages
your data and responses, with unlimited autoresponders, and automatic
follow-up for all your email accounts and all of your contact database.

The Easiest way to go: Web based
Postmaster Online has complete automation and integration of email,
database building and follow-up marketing.
http://www.postmasteronline.com/?10736

The one I prefer: Software
Powerful Microsoft Access based software
Tracks all your contacts and automatically follows-up with as many message
series you want. With 2 clicks, you can follow up with your prospects,
customers
and Associates as often as you want.http://www.post-master.net/rs/Belle

Try them for Free or contact me. ( I'm sorry if this sounds like an ad. I am
really trying to help, because I may need help some day).

Subject: Advice Needed

Please could you offer some advice. I still consider myself as a newbie to
the world of internet and although I have spent many months surfing the web
for information to find contact information for my target markets I still
believe that there must be an easier way of reaching the masses.

I have made many mistakes along the way and in some cases been accused of
spaming ( which has not been my intention at all ). I have also made the
mistake of sending messages with graphics that take to long to open and also
download. This of course I have since learned offends recipients. So I have
eventually come to understand the basic do's and don'ts of sending messages.

I have been receiving Adland messages for a while now and realize that the
subscriber base is very big. Before I use the posting facility of this
program I thought it best to find out first if by posting my my message to
this subscriber base if I would be offending anyone and also your opinion
and guidance as to how the best way of reaching a specific interest group
would be attained.

My targeted interest group are people who have leadership qualities with an
interest in sport. Firstly 8 ball pool and secondly social rugby. I need
such people to assist in promoting tours from their respective countries to
South Africa. I offer such people the incentive of an all expenses paid trip
for free for their respective efforts.

Would such a posting from the Adland posting facility be bridging any
protocol or do you have any alternative suggestion that may work better. I
will sincerely appreciate any guidance in this matter.

With respect, thanking you,

Bill ( South Africa )

Note from Moderator.

Bill ,
This is perfectly valid question and directed to the right audience.
This is exactly how this forum should be used.
If you have a question or problem pertaining to promotion
of your site/business, you send it here.
If I see  post which is self-promoting or not fitting in the profile
of this list, it won't just appear here. Believe me I get each
day  several posts, which are sent in hope that they somewhat
bypass all filters and will be delivered to the entire list.

From: "Roger Auge" <rogera@accglobal.net>
Subject: Targeting your marketing campaign!

Targeting your marketing campaign is EASY!

All internet marketers have heard the saying: The Secret to Success in
ebusiness is...
             Promotion, Promotion, Promotion!
We've heard it, but what it leads us to do is often bad for our business!

We add to our site every cool marketing tool we encounter!
We join every links site, classified site, and affiliate program we can
manage, and even some we can't manage!  When was the last time you
went to every one of your program sites to learn more about them?

If we try to market everything, we end up marketing nothing!
What we need is a marketing plan: A plan that will focus our efforts in very
specific directions with a clear goal, and a LARGE TARGET!

PLAN...AIM...FIRE

(Use 1 blank sheet of paper. For each answer write a single sentence only)
Questions:

What is my goal with this business? Write it down!
What has to happen to achieve my goal? (Sales, traffic, commissions) Write it
down!
What tools do I have access to right now? Write it down!
What tools should I concentrate on using this month?
What tools can I foresee obtaining down the road?
What tools seem to be a waste of time (IMPORTANT!)? Write it down!
What three tools would I refer to someone else?
Where are the targets (Where are my prospects)?
Can I focus my efforts on one country, state/province, county, or city
(IMPORTANT)?
Can I help 3 or 4 key affiliates/partners/downline/or other  add one new
client to their businesses?
What will I do tomorrow morning/afternoon/evening for my business?
Can I make a schedule of things to do each day and post it as a reminder?

AIM: Take another blank sheet of paper and summarize everything you think is
important right now and
POST IT NEXT TO YOUR WORKSPACE FOR A DAILY REMINDER!

FIRE: Read your plan in the morning and at night!
          FOLLOW YOUR PLAN!
Note: Rework your plan once a week! Choose one half hour a week to look over
your plan and see
how you're doing!
Celebrate your successes and write down what you think is working and what
you think hasn't.
Next time you are asked for advice, use your findings as another tool to
help someone else! (Helping
others is a form of networking that creates lifelong relationships, and is
the most gratifying way to
build any business!)

Hi Bogdan,

I hope this mail finds you well and that business is even better!  I've
written to you a few times in the past, but this time it's a little
different.  Basically, I'm writing to ask if you would include my URL in
your "Site Review Request" section.  This is my first website, so don't
expect much.  It's aimed at those new to the Net and doing business online,
so all those out there who are long in the cyber tooth need not think
they'll find much to mull over.

Any comments or suggestions from the readers will be warmly accepted and
considered, as would any tips on how I should go about promoting it.

The URL is:   http://www.go.to/emeraldsurfer

Thanks in advance and keep up the good work...

Kind regards as always...

===================G u e s t A r t i c l e (1)=====================
KEEP MOVING By Michael Angier

The sailboat was coming slowly into the marina under power. There was a
south wind blowing about 15-20 knots and it was beginning to rain. The
helmsman appeared confident and with several crew aboard I elected not to
walk over to the other dock and offer assistance. But I kept an eye out
just in case.

As the skipper made the turn into his slip he slowed even more--so much so
that he stopped. It was then that the wind pushed his bow around and,
before his crew could fend off, slammed it into the end of the dock. With
another go-around, they recovered and eventually tied up safe and secure.
The hull's gel coat probably wasn't damaged nearly as much as the pride of
her skipper.

Always wanting to learn from others' mistakes, I thought about what
happened and how it could have been avoided. It my opinion, the captain of
this yacht violated one of the basic principles of seamanship: keep the
boat moving.

In his well-intended effort to be cautious, he lost steerage because the
boat stopped its forward motion. Without water flowing past the rudder, he
had no ability to direct his vessel.

Our lives are not boats, but it's not a bad metaphor. Safe in harbor, we
need times of rest and reflection where action is not required. But in the
marketplace, when we take action, we need to be doing enough to give us
headway--enough to guide and control our forward motion--to maintain
momentum.

When we're moving ahead, we see things that we wouldn't see at rest. We
experience events that otherwise wouldn't have occurred. Oftentimes, the
goal we start out to accomplish turns out not to be what we wanted, but
instead leads us along our true path. All because of our forward motion.

A universal principle states that, "a body in motion tends to remain in
motion." Conversely, a body at rest tends to remain at rest. And as we saw
in the example of the boat above, we can be blown about by all manner of
things that can, and most often are, contrary to our intention.

When we rest, we should rest, but when the time comes for action, KEEP
MOVING!

======================Joke of the Day=====================
Taken from Joke a Day

In a small town, farmers of the community had gotten
together to discuss some important issues. About midway
through the meeting, a wife of one of the farmers stood up
and spoke her piece.

One of the old farmers stood up and said, "What does she
know about anything? I would like to ask her if she knows
how many toes a pig has?"

Quick as a flash, the woman replied, "Take off your boots sir,
and count them yourself!"
