===================Success Story===================
From:Bogdan Fiedur. mailto:bogadan@softfornet.com

In last issue I asked for more success stories for Adland Digest success
story contest. Since nobody sent any new stories to me and I warned you
that I will have to publish my own, I have to be consistent and here you
will find portion of my self-published success story. Of course this is
not going to be taken as a valid contribution for the contest.
----

It is not too easy to identify components  of success story, particularly
as everybody usually notes, these successes are still under way and
everybody hopes that things are going to be only better.
Here is link to success stories published in Adland Digest.
http://www.adlandpro.com/archives/adlandDigestSS.htm

I believe that the biggest success for me is the fact that I do
what I like and almost when I like (which means all my
spare time). The business which I have started almost two
years ago, is giving me not only income  (over $200,000
Canadian Dollars in  first year of its operation) but satisfies
most of the aspects of my personality. One of  the reasons why I
I'm glad that I can work each morning, is  the fact that I don't
have a boss and all my efforts  are being rewarded by
satisfied customers which in turn is reflected in my income.
For me Friday is always too early which seemed to be quite
the opposite  when I used to work as an employee.

I don't need to be noticed by my superiors to give me promotion
or a raise. I do this myself and I know exactly when I performed
well and when I performed bad.

I also would  you like to know that I never joined single MLM
program or even relied on some affiliate programs to generate
my income. I created my own affiliate program which within
1 year and a half of its existence joined over 5,600 affiliates.
Most active affiliates are being paid commissions each month ,
traffic bonuses and are getting  free advertising on my site.

Another big  addition to my  success tool is this publication.
Adland Digest is a unique most effective tool in running of
my business. It allows me on communicating good and bad
things about my business to my subscribers, as well as provide
forum for discussion for newbies,  which I was myself some
time ago and I know how it feels to get good advice.

Recently I was contacted by certain internet company which
offered me three times the revenue to buy  my internet business.
At first I was  thrilled with this offer as  this was sign of appreciation
for what I  have created, but on the second thought, this was
a problem for me. I would have to become an employee again to
run this business for certain time and start doing things as I used to
do before. I would have some good  cash input but in my opinion
I will be able to produce three times the revenue within next year.

So  I didn't follow up with the offer because I realized that If I could
get to the point where I'm right now, I can get to another one if
I just improve what I do so far.

In my opinion the most important thing In anybody's life is to have
freedom of choice and be able to do things which don't seem
like work but like fun. And if you can  have fun and at the same
time be able to make some useful work, you found  what you
always wanted to be when you grow up.

I whish all of you that you find in your life what you always
thought you would be when you grow up.

Regards

Bogdan Fiedur

From: "Robin Forbes" <robinfor@home.com>
Subject: Yahoo! switches to Google

Hi Bogdan and All;

In Digest #180 I noted that Yahoo! uses Inktomi for it's "Search" results.
I've just found out that's no longer true. I came across a press release at
Google dated June 26th: http://www.google.com/pressrel/pressrelease25.html
I went to Yahoo! did a few searches and found that Yahoo! has indeed chosen
Google for their search engine provider. Not bad for a search engine that
was in beta oh not so long a go. Google is definitely  catching on. Which
reminds me....That myth about one should only submit to the top 10
directories/engines - everything else is a waste of time....gee guess I got
some of my clients sites in before little guys like Google made it Big Time.

Cheers;

From: Dick Foote  <PrEntCo@aol.com>
Subject: Counters Question:

Dear Adland,

First, a note to say thanks for providing Adland Digest. I've subscribed for
some time now, and always look forward to receiving it as a useful and
interesting contribution to my Internet life.

In Adland Digest #182, Bartek Rys writes:

"Also, I'm looking for a good counter which can provide me with the
following:

- No user count on a page (I don't want my visitors to see the number of
hits)
- Multiple-page capabilities (I want to know the stats for all my main
pages)
- Graphic display of page hits (I would like to see graphs when I go to
their site to see my stats)
- Unique IPs (Will not count hits from the same IP within a period of 1-5
hours)"

I recently put up my website, and after looking at a number of counters and
stats programs, decided on Hitbox. You can find them at
http://get.hitbox.com/

First of all, it's FREE. You can buy more expanded versions, but I've found
the free version perfectly adequate.

They provide a very wide range of stats, and I think you'll find everything
you're looking for.

You have to put a small click-through banner of theirs on each page you want
counted, but they'll give you a Wizard you can download that makes it a
pretty simple matter.

I hope this helps, and Best Wishes.

Subject: (Was Quest For Help) (My own affiliate program)

Hi Bogdan,

I am glad that you mentioned starting your own affiliate program in the last
newsletter.

I have just started with clickXchange and am seeing some good results.

I have more than 25 affiliates hosting my links and banners and making
better headway with increasing my daily unique visitor count. This is after
one week!

The cost isn't much, US$100.00 to start. And any earnings you make from
hosting affiliate links and banners yourself goes into your affiliate
program, so your earnings help to pay your affiliates!

This is a much better way to increase traffic, it far and away outperforms
banner exchanges and FFA links.
And I have a code trick for all you hopefuls out there!

Stop showing your affiliate code in the status bar with this bit of code:

ONMOUSEOVER="window.status='YOUR TEXT HERE'; return true"
ONMOUSEOUT="window.status=''; return true" target="_top"
USE IT AS SUCH:
ONMOUSEOVER="window.status='YOUR TEXT HERE'; return true"
ONMOUSEOUT="window.status=''; return true" target="_top"]

This will show your text message instead of the affiliate link url in the
status bar.

Get to work and improve your pages now!

Happy Selling!

From: "Robin Forbes" <robinfor@home.com>
Subject: Request for portal info

Greetings All;

Chris Gozdzik diviningmind@diviningmind.com ;was looking for a portal script
in  Adlands #182.

Two possible solutions came to mind for anyone interested in setting up
their own portal. The first, is Gossamer-Threads; a Yahoo! like directory.
It is a script that runs on UNIX, NT, and Macintosh boxes. They have two
different options. You can use their script for free if you meet certain
criteria, or there's the pay for use option. (Both use the same script the
difference being that the free option requires one to keep the link back to
Gossamer). URL: http://gossamer-threads.com/scripts/links/index.htm

The second possibility is to use Search King. Search King will also host
your portal. They have three different hosting and portal options, depending
on your needs and budget. URL: http://www.searchking.com/

Hope that this helps a bit.

Robin Forbes

======================N e w P o s t i n g (1)========================
From: "Ken Werner" <wernerken@hotmail.com>
Subject: FFAs / Request for Site Review

Hi Bogdan and fellow Adlanders:

I have been reading in recent months about the supposed ineffectiveness of
FFA sites and, since I have posted in quite a few and have a few reciprocal,
permanent links, I began to doubt that I constructively used my time.

That is, until last week, when I discovered I had major errors in my keyword
metatags and that my submissions to at least 40 search engines had been in
vain.  (The errors have been corrected, and I have continued new search
engine submissions, including to Voila after reading that the quickest path
to Yahoo's heart is through a non-English search engine.)

Which means that even though my website is relatively new (construction
began only in the beginning of April 2000) and traffic to my website is
still meagre at best, most of the traffic to my website up until June 29
consisted of click-throughs from FFA sites, with about 5% of my traffic
originating from handouts on the streets of San Francisco.  On June 29-30 I
received 554 hits from a FREE Bonus Ticket sponsorship through Free Money
Lotto, one of 59 FREE Lotteries I list on my website.

Conclusion?  FFAs WORK!!!  While posting to FFAs consumes some time, they
are a FREE resource no one should ignore.  Indeed, with a little research,
that is, posting differently-worded messages, you will discover what works
best on certain types of FFA sites.  As an example, I have had a posting at
GamblersLuck's Top 100 site for some time.  For a few weeks it wasn't going
anywhere.  Then I changed a few words and on June 23 I SHOT UP TO #1 and
remained in the top 5 for a week.  (It's time to reword my posting again.)

However, one problem still remains with my website: click-throughs to
sponsoring sites.  Visitors are coming to my website to look, but traffic to
my sponsoring sites is minimal, indeed, discouraging at times.  I therefore
ask my fellow Adlanders, and you Bogdan, for a review of my website: your
constructive criticism will be most welcome.  I seek an answer to the
age-old (in terms of the Internet, at least) question, 'Do I have
appropriate sponsors for my website?'  Indeed, if changing the sponsors is
crucial, then what TYPE of sponsors should I be showcasing?

Here's my URL:

http://msnhomepages.talkcity.com/StudioRow/ken_werner/index.html

Gratefully,

Ken Werner
San Francisco

===========Site Review Response=============
From: "Edward S. Gause" <edgause@yahoo.com>

Hello AdlandPro Readers,

In issue 182 Sue wrote.
"I am writing to ask that my URL be included in your Site Review.  I have
been running my children's personalized book business for a few years
now but just brought it online this March."

Sue,

First I would like to know, do you have any Christian storybooks for
newborns?   Our little one will be joining us next month and this would
be a nice welcome home present for her.

back to the subject at hand: Your site has STRONG income potential once you
get your own domain name and some minor touch ups.  I liked the organization
of your pages, but I wasn't too particular about the background color.
You're going to be BIG, so why not go with a more professional look.  Yes,
I'm talking the traditional white background.

Your site also loads fast.  Another plus.  When it's time to start promoting
your site, you will have difficulty with most search engines since you are
using
frames.
Finally, if you don't have a merchant account, there are several
alternatives for accepting secure credit card orders online.  You will want
this
as well to increase your orders.  We are a "want it now" society.  We don't
want to wait on snail mail.

Well Sue, I hope you don't take any of my comments personally.  I only want
to read your success story in the Adland digest at the end of this year.
Best
of luck and God speed.....

Edward S. Gause

15 Proven Ways to Make Your Site Fail
By Mike McCutchen

During my years of surfing the Net one thing has jumped out at me. There
seems to be quite a few people who actually go out of their way to assure a
low ranking of their site.
Below is a list of 15 things to do to make sure that you never get repeat
visitors. This is presented in an effort to make your attempts to make your
site one that people will not want to return to easier.
The list can also be used to improve your ranking by avoiding doing these
things.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The List

·  Use pop-ups
It is always such a joy to see the task bar fill up with pop-ups loading;
especially the ones that refresh themselves. Not only do people not look at
the pop-up (I close them before they load) but they crash some browsers.

·  Fill the page with animated images and blinking text
If you're not running a graphics design site, there is just no need for
these things.

·  Have a page that is nothing but banners
We've all seen them. We didn't click on them the first 100 times. What makes
you think that we'll click them now?

·  Don't look at your page after you publish it
We all enjoy seeing tags that haven't been closed and trying to figure out
what words you meant to put between "the" and "out". This sure gives us a
lot of confidence in doing business with you.

·  Show us another replicated site
We just can't see enough "Refmaker", "Ghost Surfers", or All Advantage sign
up pages.

·  Use black text on a dark blue background
If we can't read your page we'll come back again and again to see if you've
added more stuff we can't read ... sure we will.

·  Add music to your page that we can't turn off
Thank you for pointing out that your taste is so much better than our's. The
music that we are listening to just can't compare with yours. That's why we
like to listen to the music coming from the car behind us so much.

·  Don't title your page
You know what it's about. Why should we care? Oh, and make it better by
showing us a blank screen with an "enter here" button. Yeah, that'll grab
us.

·  Make sure you make your page load slowly
Put all the "shockwave", "java", and "flash" applets you can find on the
page. That way we should be back from the bathroom about the time it loads.
Just in time to go to the next site.

·  Use all the frames that you can
It doesn't matter that they all probably won't load. It really doesn't annoy
us to be trapped in your frame if we click on a link. It certainly doesn't
bother us that we can't bookmark your site.

·  Make us look for the links to your other pages
Nothing excites us more than to hunt for your links to associate sites
except, maybe, being lead through five pages to get to where we wanted to
go.

·  Make it as hard as possible to contact you
Why should you want to hear from us? After all, you're showing us what you
want us to buy from you. We should just be quiet and pay you money. If you
do show your email address, be certain to have all the letters go to an auto
responder.

·  Fill your page with text
Nothing will keep our attention more than a page full of writing. Please
don't give us any open space. That's why so many people are getting off the
Net to read books.

·  Don't update your site
It doesn't matter that none of the links work. They were fine when you built
the page last year.

·  Misname your site
We all love to go to "Bob's Home page" only to see a list of 55 pay to surf
programs. We'll just assume that Bob (who is not mentioned anywhere) owns
all these?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The opinions above are not just mine. They have been gathered over time from
web design professionals, consumers, and Net veterans.

======================Joke of the Day=====================
Taken from Joke a Day

Bubba from the lower valley decided he wanted to get
married, and brought up the subject with his Ma and Pa over
grits and gravy the other night.

"Bubba," Ma said, "you can't get married yet. Why, you're
the baby of the family."

"But Ma," Bubba protested, "I had my 38th birthday jest last
week."

"We know that, Bubba," Pa chimed in. "But your Ma and me
think you should put off getting married until after you
graduate from high school."
