Greetings All

Welcome 220  new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

                                        ----===(*)===-----

I just came back from my week of holiday and you might guess,
I have my hands full with all kinds of little issues which need to
be taken care of. I really enjoyed this week of vacation and don't
regret that now I have a little bit of extras to do.

Usually I try to tell something in this section which  can be useful
for everybody but today Jon D. Atwood did very good job with
his writing  and I just use his letter.
By the way in the last issue of Adland Digest I was talking about
free merchant accounts.
Don't miss it.

<----
From:Jon D. Atwood" <webmaster@options-unlimited.net>

Bogdan and Fellow Adlanders,

It's been quite some time since I've had the time to read the
Digest or post to it.  I wanted to send this to those of you that
have joined in the past 6 months or so.....

Are you advertising on AdlandPro Classifieds?  If you are,
have you set up your Own CoBranded Classified page on your
domain?

WHY NOT!  I did this as soon as I knew it was available.  I get
a steady stream of visitors to my site just to post to my
Adland Classifieds page.

What does this mean to me?  It means that for every ad
posted, I get 5 Ad Credits for MY ad to be shown at the top of
every Adland page.  To date, I've had over 22,000 impressions
on the Adland domain.

Wanna know something even better??  You get PAID for the
traffic you generate.  When I get my next check from Bogdan,
I'll have received almost $300 from him for NO EFFORT on my
part aside from putting the page on my domain.  I'd say that's
a pretty good bonus!

There's more!!  You can earn 25% if someone purchases
advertising at Adland.  Now I try not to pay for advertising
myself, but this is the ONE place that I ALWAYS will be
willing to buy ad credits.  Bogdan created a banner for me that
consistently brings me almost 10% CTR.  Most people on the
Net strive to get a 2% CTR and that's even rare.

To wrap this up I'll say this, Take advantage of what Bogdan
offers at Adland!  If you put a little focus into your efforts, you
can get a consistent income just from you Adland
Commissions.  Add to that the FREE Advertising you can
earn.....  WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE????

Have a great week all!!

Warm Regards,

Jon D. Atwood

===================Success Story===================
From: "Robert Keating" <inetimage@inetimage.com>

Bogdan,

Forgive me for not letting you know sooner. I have been a busy boy for the
last several months.
I would like to tell you my success story.

I have been working on the Internet for several years. I have tried just
about everything (legal) to make a go of The Internet Opportunity that is
there for everyone who has the gumption to pursue it. I started selling
sites for other designers while I learned the basics of html. I then began
to do freelance design work.

Back in the old days, it was next to impossible to get people to realize the
great potential that exists on the Internet. I had a really rough time. I
stuck with it. I was determined not to fail. I knew in my heart that the
Internet was the place for me.

I faced several obstacles. Finding clients for design work, finding good
hosting for the sites that I was creating (a real horror story, but more of
that another time), letting people know that I had a service for them
(marketing). I couldn't service without finding a solution to all three
problems.

I solved the hosting problem by sinking my life savings into building my own
hosting company (http://inetimage.com) . My next big problem was marketing.
Remember that this is several years ago. There were not as many resources
for marketing two years ago as there are now. I began searching for the very
best marketing options available to me. Being on a very limited budget, I
had to find as many free and low cost alternatives that I could. I looked at
many options but the one that has done me the most good for the best price
is Classified Ads.

I began exploring Classified Ads. It didn't take me long to realize that the
best Classified Program out there was Adland. I first started placing ads. I
got a few responses. Then I went for the brass ring and added Adland's
Classified to my site. I was then able to promote Free Classifieds as an
added attraction to my site. I began to get more hits on my site. The more I
promoted the Free Adland Classifieds, the more hits I got.

This all boils down to exploring possibilities, and implementing them.
Because of the techniques that I have learned from your newsletter and other
resources, I have dedicated the greater part of my Internet activity to
marketing.

Thanks for helping me earn a good living.

Patricia,

You might try http://www.webscapeworldwide.com/. They have a wide variety of
services for businesses like yours, and I'm certain they have the management
software you need. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, so I can't vouch
for what kind of company they really are, but I do know that some of the
"big boys" in MLM use them.

Subject: Software to support members

Hi Bogdan,

Patricia was looking for software for her service provider MLM.

I wonder if what she is really looking for is Affiliate Master
Software.

Affiliates certainly seem to be the immediate future for web sales.
And Virtualisare proof that the affiliate way is a real winner for
a great ISP. Check out their affiliate set-up at

++++   http://www.virtualis.com/vr/vabbott/    +++++++

You might even consider signing up to see  how a really well thought
out programme works; the terrific back-up and encouragement they
give affiliates etc.

The affiliate route may also be the best way to generate targeted
web traffic. Just think about it: what other method allows you to
get a host of banners, buttons, copy on 100s or even 1,000s of
focussed web sites? And all for almost FREE!

But they are no guarantee of success. Think of all the affiliates most
of us have dabbled with?

Take a good look at some great affiliates. I have been taught, patiently
and regularly, more by Ken Evoy and Declan Dunn than i can imagine.
Ken's affiliate ezine is a must for ANYONE trying to make money on the
web. He doesn't go on with any hype of codology, just a persistent effort
to identify affiliates problems and trying to find ways to help. He has a
FREE 10-Day Tutorial that is invaluable. You can get it at

+++++  http://www.irishpoems.com/affiliate.htm   ++++++

Master Software is readily available varying from great to dreadful. Prices
seems to swing from  $300 to $12,000? Here are sine brands you might like
to check out: Site Sponsor, NetTracker 2000, E Comm Works, Affiliate Shop,
Commission Junction, ClickTrade, BeFree, etc.

Some  run the software from THEIR servers. Some charge you per affiliate
signed up (which could get expensive). Some can have semi-hidden charges.

As you can see, I've been doing my homework on this whole question. I think
Assoctrac Software is the best deal. I put it before the popular Commission
Junction because successful Affiliate Declan Dunn recommends Assoctrac.I've
also gone over a lot of stuff myself and Corey Rudl is certainly a safe and
respected pair of hands. Check it out here:
++++++ http://www.affiliatetraining.com/assoctrac/   ++++++ (By the way,
I'm not an Affiliate :-)

Finally, if Patricia wants some great articles etc  about setting up your
own Affiliate, just send me an email and I can let you have some useful
stuff.

Good Luck!

Viv Abbott

Hello!

This is in response to a reader having problems with WebTV.  You can cut
& paste with WebTV, if you go to the help section on the home page it
will tell you how.  I'm not sure why you'd need to, as I receive AdLand
digest on my WebTV account and all the links are "hyperlinked" .  The
links to WebPages and email are in blue, which you can then "click."  I
have the oldest version of WebTV (or the Classic version, as WebTV so
nicely puts it) so it should be that way with any unit.

Hope this helps,

Subject: Hosting Suggestions

Bogdan:
I have hosting suggestions for Dan Dickerson, who wants a UNIX server
virtual host with all the bells and whistles.

If you want a pay service that is affordable and reliable:

I have used http://www.he.net (Hurricane Electric) for two years and
have seven dot com domains of my own hosted with them, plus I have set
up three clients on dot com sites virtually hosted by Hurricane
Electric. Their service is just terrific. I can install perl scripts to
my heart's content since they have cgiwrap. I have direct access to my
accounts through FTP uploading and by Telnet.  I have been helped by
email when I had technical questions. I have multiple mailboxes, https
as well as http, easy page counter installation, easy mailbox forwarding
setup, and tons more. When I want a new .com account they fill out the
paperwork for me at networksolutions.com and set me up for just a $20
setup fee. They have various plans and my favorite is the Basic Virtual
Host for $9.95 a month for a small site. I also have several $24.95 a
month accounts which allow more traffic (10 gigabytes monthly) and more
disk space (100 MB) You can even resell the space if you want, but you
are responsible for the people you resell to on your account. No spam is
allowed. No IRC bot, MUD, MOO, or MUSH are allowed, but they are
researching this area. I have direct access to my raw logs through FTP
and also they have a nice web activity report that I can look at online
in my web browser. I can see referrers, most popular pages and files,
etc. I can also see if people are stealing my images and bandwidth! See
the chart on the he.net services page for what you get for each type of
account: http://www.he.net/spaceservices.html   If you are a newbie,
their online technical FAQ is terrific and includes helpful UNIX
instructions and more: http://www.he.net/faq/

For those of you who want freebie web sites, well, you get what you pay
for, which isn't a whole lot, but I am working on a list of free hosters
and I invite you all to check out my ongoing chart of free web space
providers:

http://www.royaltyfreeart.com/freeweb.html

Good luck to all who are seeking providers to host their web sites.
P.S. I get no money from recommending Hurricane Electric at
http://www.he.net   I do it because I like their services and want to
spread the good word.

Sincerely,
Eve Paludan

From: Andrew Miagama  <webmaster@advance.nu>
Subject: Hosting Suggestions

Dear Bogdan & Listmates!

Since Rosanne Dobbins' article "Choosing A Domain Host" was neat
but from a reseller's point of view I'd like to report from customer's
sight.

Working as an IT consultant in the Pacific Rim I have assisted
over 200 small businesses in getting on the WWW.
Unfortunately, we found josconNetworks much to late, after we
have made many bad and also worst experiences with about 30 different
hosting companies (including brands like Virtualis & Valueweb!), and
dishonest merchant account and e-commerce providers.

For example, Virtualis' affiliate program might be the one that pays
the highest commissions, maybe it's the host with the best copy-writing
and marketing staff, BUT their tech support is lousy. They promise your
emails will be responded within 11 minutes - that's true, but it's just an
autoresponder. We had server downtimes for up to four days, so we sent
several requests and complaints but didn't get any explanation or solution
except messages telling us that we should look at our Windows
settings or to change our browser!
Virtualis has a great promotional team and their success is
probably a large part of their problems, I think they can't
manage growth very well and the marketing people are far ahead
of the technical folks.

There is another strange experience we have made by using several
Webhost directories and Hostfinders, because they are ranking the
hosting companies proportionally to their paid advertisings.

Thanks to my friend Rushdie, who is with them since 1995(!) I found
josconNetworks --
Disclaimer: I'm in no way affiliated with them, just a very satisfied
customer.

From February 1999 on - when we implemented the very first website
with joscon - until today we experienced not a single minute of
server downtime. And the best of all, they have very moderate prices.
Today we have 62 e-commerce enabled sites running with them, and
I'm planning to move all others till the end of this year.
Maybe there is only one thing you won't like, they don't have phone
support. But their email support is fast and dependable.

josconNetworks is a small but reliable family-owned business.
They offer all kind of webhosting solutions, individually designed
storefronts and shopping carts including credit card payment services, etc.
Spend a couple of minutes on visiting their website that provides
some 1,500 pages of helpful information. Since everything is worth
visiting I can't tell you where to begin first, but don't miss this page
http://linz1.net/aboutus.html
then continue perhaps to  http://linz1.net/hosting/webhosting.html

Wishing all Adlanders a successful online business!

==========C o n t i n u i n g D i s c u s s i o n (5.1)=============
From: "Robin Forbes" <robinfor@home.com>
Subject: RE: Marty Mitchell - Still No Sales

Greetings;

I looked over your site Marty and found two things that are hindering you.
The first is credibility. When someone buys from you locally, they know who
you are and where they can reach you, if there's a problem, or if you try to
rip them off. You've established that presence and good reputation locally.
Now, here on the web, you need to establish yourself as a reputable business
person. Everything you can do to establish this, will separate you from the
cons and scams that everyone is wary of. The first step would of course be
to open up that budget and get a domain name. I will not buy coins and
collectibles from some faceless person who hasn't got a domain. (That's Step
One), Step Two: If you're on a limited budget and hosted on a free server;
upgrade when it becomes possible, to paid hosting.

Speaking of being faceless; you might consider posting a picture of yourself
on your web site. It's one more piece of info that will build credibility
and take you closer to that sale. People may think they like faceless
anonymity, however when it comes right down to it they need to know that
they're dealing with a real and reputable person. (Facelessness is for the
Chat Rooms)

Second Hindrance: Ease of payment. PayPal may be great for auctions but it's
sure hindering your web site sales. I clicked on one paypal banner and was
confronted with a login screen. I don't want to login to some place and try
to remember what it was and how many I wanted and how much it was as well as
your Name and email address. On another page there were three items; I
clicked on the PayPal button and up pops a nicely filled out form - Great
unfortunately it didn't have the item I wanted. This form was filled out for
a large coin case when what I wanted was the individual plastic coin
holders.

Solution: You need a Credit Card payment system that includes a shopping
cart. This shopping cart will have all of the available merchandise, total
the order, as well as let me return to your site and shop some more, if I'm
not done yet. Bogdan mentioned a new company
ProPay -http://www.adlandpro.com/redir/propay.asp in the last issue;
unfortunately it doesn't have a shopping cart. But you can use it for garage
sales and auctions (Also Note: If you do more than $1000.00 worth of
business in a month with them you need to pre-fund your account - However
for some people this might be the way to go - I was certainly interested
about their program but as I'm a Canuck I was out of luck)

The company that I'm familiar with is CCNow. http://www.ccnow.com   Check
them out. CCSLIDE.COM http://www.ccslide.com is another that has a shopping
cart. I haven't dealt with them so I don't know if they're any good or not.
Neither of them require you to pay them anything up-front; nor are there any
monthly fees.

It's good to see that you also provide a snail mail way of processing,
however what about providing a order form. A simple one would do - anything
that makes things easier for your customer is one less thing in the way of
the sale.

Building a business is a step by step process. Nothing happens over night,
and one needs to establish their credibility. One also needs to make it easy
for their customers to do business with them. So, perhaps it's time to take
the next step.

All the best;
Robin Forbes

Subject: RE: Marty Mitchell - Still No Sales

Hi Marty! I went and took a look and this is what I saw:
Coin holders for sale.
Your opening picture of this item is fine, but the picture is small. Then
you link it to a browser enlarged image that is unfocused and not a great
way to show off the product. Take another picture of it and make it a nice
clear one.
This is obviously a very specialized market. Your store also carries coins,
right? <http://sites.netscape.net/monicapop/sacagaweacoins>
is a well designed page but lacks Meta Tags and you'll definitely do better
if you add pages of content to your site, as far as the search engines go.
(Build meta tags easily with a free download tool available at:
<http://www.alovelinksplus.com/webmaster/meta_tag.htm> ) They love content.
Maybe add some history of coin collecting, centering about the coins you
have available and new releases that you have available.
And, if you have your own business, you really should have your own domain
name and website, not a free one. That would speak volumes to any potential
visitors you have. Check out "coin collectors" in any search engine and
you'll see the competition and what they are doing. You have a ways to go
but are on the right track. I agree, you should be doing better.

From: "Roger May " <remay@flash.net>
Subject: Help for my site?

I am looking for reviews and help for my site:

 http://www.asapReps.com/isp

I have tweaked and tweaked my site until I am flat out
of ideas as to how to make it better.  I "believe" I have
promoted my site to search engines, but it is obvious to
me it is not enough, because I am not getting that much
traffic. Any help on meta tags or promotion tips would be
appreciated.

I am a stickler for details and when people visit my site,
I want to be able to give them as much information and be
as accurate as possible.  Some people have told me this
will never work, that I am overdoing it. But I cannot
bring myself to cutting parts of the site out in an attempt
to force people to "request more information".  I try not
to leave any doubt in a visitor's mind.

I am also not fond of fancy flash screens, or video or
music, I just want to be "business like" and provide facts
and benefits. Also, I am not real knowledgeable about frames
or java, so have stayed away from them. That doesn't mean
I am not WILLING to try them.

So working within these guidelines, is there ANYTHING
that can be done better?  Re-organization of the layout?
Gateway pages (I am STILL looking for a good definition
of what they are)? Anything else?

Or should I just accept the fact that this site is not
going to draw the quantity of visitors and ultimately
customers, and Reps, that I am looking for?

===========Site Review Response(1)=============
From: Terri Robinson <queen3@home.com>

Hello Bogdan and fellow Adlanders!

Darin Hunter asked for a site review of his site at
http://niradgolf.bigstep.com
so I dropped over there and checked it out.  Darin, the site looks very
nice - clean layout, fast loading, one very nice appropriate graphic.

The space right in the center of your page though is prime real
estate for "you" - and you are giving it away to ccnow!  This space
could be far better used by putting some great content related to
your company.  Give them some reason for getting deeper into
the site - what are their needs/wants? Talk about those and how
you have what they want.

The graphic at the top has an alt tag that says simply "Nirad Golf" -
add to that with a tagline of something like "Nirad Golf - gifts for the
golfer in your life" (or something descriptive).  The search engines
read alt tags and the results they print are very often what they
see on the top of the page - not always what you have in your
META tags.  I am not sure that the blue golfer graphic adds anything
of value to your page - you might want to consider taking it off to give
more impact to your really nice graphic of the golfer (the bronze
statuette?)

To answer your question, Darin - yes, I would buy from you if you
compel me inside with good copy  :)

Best regards,
Terri Robinson

===========Site Review Response(2)=============
From: "Robert Lee" <webmaster@alovelinksplus.com>

From: Emarketer@webtv.net (Darin Hunter)
Hello!
I have been reading AdLand digest for quite some time and receive some
great ideas and insight from it.  I would like to know fellow readers'
opinions on my site:
http://niradgolf.bigstep.com
If you were in the market for a golf gift, would you purchase from this
site?
Thanks,
Darin Hunter

Darin, you have some nice stuff there. Would I buy the items you have? Yes,
for the golfer that everyone knows. Would I buy from you? Probably not. You
have no shipping info page (maybe at the end of the checkout, but I never
look that far into a transaction, if I don't see company contact info up
front, with addresses and phone numbers, emails, etc, I do not buy!)
And what's with all that empty space in the top half of the page? Every
page? Maybe a great place for the info I just mentioned?  You also need to
explain how the whole transaction works. I can see 3 different urls for the
transaction cart and purchase. This should be explained, simply, somewhere.
Good luck!

Dear Bogdan,
Your fantastic newsletter has been a source of information, knowledge,
inspiration and hope for me for the last few months.
My request is for a review of my website, which is a)-a mini-portal for
shopping, b)-a source for internet marketers, op-seekers, tips on freebies,
free software etc. I have been on-line since April this year and I just
would like comments and advice on the site design, relevance etc.
Incidentally I have your Adland banner right on top on my home page but so
far have had no sign-ups from click-thrus. The home-page URL is
http://wwwlynx.4mg.com and the 'resources' URL is
http://wwwlynx.4mg.com/resource.htm.
Really appreciate everything you have done and are doing.
Warm regards
Hathef Khazvini

Hathef,
All I can say is "Good Luck!"
Pages of links just don't work for anyone anymore. Where is the content? Why
would anyone come to your site? It has no form or real reason, other than a
place to post any and every affiliate link you could possibly sign up for.
Pick one or two affiliate programs that you hope to make some money from,
and build a website around it with some real content.
Then come back and ask for another review. And why are you using a trial
version of ECBuilder? I am quite familiar with this program, it does not
have what you need to build a good site. Not with your content anyways. At
least download FrontPage Express from Microsoft and get a real site
authoring tool for free.

I would like to request a site review (if you still do them).  My site
is http://www.desktoppublishingbylmm.com
Thanking you in advance.
Sincerely,
Lisa M. Miller

Lisa,
Very nicely done. Although I'm not really big on frames, you have worked
them well into your attractive and fast loading site.
I am sure you have a lot of local business coming your way, since the best
way to promote services such as yours in locally.
You should do very well, keep in touch.

Hello from New Zealand
I'd love a bit of feedback on this new site we've just put up. It's the
promotion and registration form for an Internet Marketing seminar.
www.egroup.co.nz/seminars
Thank you all!!!
Debbie

Debbie,
Very nicely done. I wish I could go! Fast loading, information for every
question possible, almost. The only thing that's missing is a map or
directions on where the seminar is. That would be the finishing touch!
I wish you much success.

That's me for this week Bogdan.
Thanks for the opportunity to speak out yet again!

========= Site Review Request (1)===========
From: Karen Kinchen <karenk@surfsouth.com>

Dear Bogdan,
I would like to have you review my site. It is very basic in layout,
but I hope it gets my point across, and inspires people to click through
to my sponsors. Maybe in a few months I can send you a new success
story! I have many good ideas, but lack the design creativity necessary
to make the site stand out. I would appreciate any advice you can give
me.
  Thank you, Karen Kinchen     http://www.childrescuers.com

========= Site Review Request (2)===========
From: "Steven carrier" <carrcad@hotmail.com>

I would like a review of my 2 sites www.CADuse.net and www.pinksrock.net
I've been getting 2000 hits per month on the first URL but only getting less
than 1% click thru rate. I know I have a lot of work yet to do, but where
should I start? Love the newsletter keep it coming.

======================Joke of the Day=====================
Taken from Joke a Day

The time:  1944.  Nazi Germany.

Two Jews decide they're going to assassinate Hitler.  They
carefully and painstakingly map out their plans over several
months.  They work their way past border patrols, armed
guards, and other dangers to show outside of a bar.

The bar is one their intelligence operatives have determined
that Hitler visits every Tuesday at 11:30 p.m.  They hide
around the side of the bar and wait patiently for the chance
to kill this monster.

11:30 comes.  No Hitler.

11:35 comes.  Still he's not shown up.

At 11:45, one of the men turns to the other and says, "Man,
I hope nothing's happened to him."
