"Don't Rely on your Spellchecker or The Importance of Good Proof Reading"
By Tony Murtagh

Joke of the Day
===============

================== Word from publisher ====================

Greetings All

Welcome  90  new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

                                        ----===(*)===-----

Most of the time subject message of the digest is title of guest
article published in the issue.
After last issue I received couple of emails telling me this.

"Don't  loose visitors because of  poor site  design
Should read "Don't lose visitors"

The above was subject message for  digest #186.
After I looked at this, I hoped that the title of last article
was done this way on purpose. I haven't had second thought
that this was just improper use of word  in the title and
as always I just copied it and pasted in the subject of
the last issue.

Later I contacted author of the article and discussed it with him.
With joy he responded that maybe he should write another
article about mistakes like this. So today we will read how
we should take care about our letters  when we are sending
them to the group of people.

You might say that I should have detected this, but remember
English is my second language and I often assume that things
are right  if they are written by English speakers, particularly
if spellchecker doesn't complain ;)

Again testimonial from AdlandPro user.

From: Kathleen VanBeekom  SVanBeekom@aol.com

I had a button ad on the top of AdlandPro for a month, I had always
wanted to be one of "the important people"!
I was worried about spending for the cost of that ad, but it was a much
better price than I had expected for the amount of traffic that comes in!
I earn $30 per sale of the service I'm advertising, and I made back the
cost almost immediately!  I have tracking for my site and every day
AdlandPro showed up consistently as the place where people clicked!
It brought in 50% of my traffic!  I post a great deal of ads on Yahoo and
send to dozens of opt-in lists every day and post to bulletin boards,
even with all of that, the AdlandPro button-ad attracted 50% of my hits!

===================Success Story===================
From: "Chrisi Darrington" <chrisi@netwoozy.com>

Dear Bogdan,

A few months back I remember reading about your success story
contest and thinking that I would submit when I qualified. Then last
week I read it again and thought... I'll wait another month or two
until I qualify.

Then today it hit me. What am I waiting for? I'm a success story
right now. So, I'm submitting my story today.

For ten years I've tried to find something to do from my home to
help my husband learn a new trade or business. He's a carpet
layer and he simple cannot do this forever. We live paycheck to
paycheck and for the last two years I have not had a car. He
currently drives a huge bread van to work.

Because of my own physical disability I can't get a job away
from my home... Thus I decided to do something on the Internet.

Things finally shaped up this year for me when I realized what
was needed on the Net, which was the fact that so many people
want to start a web business, but they are very lost as to how to
do it properly.

As I began helping people by answering their questions on message
boards I realized I had found my nitch. I decided to create a website
for newbie net marketers.

I opened May 1st and within the month I had right around 200 people
sign up to my newsletter. These people came from my posts to
one particular Internet forum as well as word of mouth. I didn't post
advertisements, I helped answer posts from newbies. Usually the ones
that said, "Help! I'm a newbie!" ;-)

>From the vary first issue of my newsletter I began receiving such
wonderful thank you notes from my little group of readers. I would ask
them if I could use them as testimonials for my website, but had to
stop as they continued to roll in almost daily and still do.

I was really amazed at how much my newsletter seem to help people.
Just about the time when I would think, "Oh, is this article good enough?"
or "I wonder if anyone needs to know this?" I'd receive another email
thanking me for those articles. Even some of the simplest tips were
getting great responses from my readers.

By June, I began to see people posting nice things about me and
recommending my website to others on the message boards that I
frequented.

One day I can't remember if it was in May or June, I received an email
from someone that truly brought tears to my eyes. One of my subscribers
had asked me for help on their website, and just after he sent the email to
me he had intruders come into his home and beat him to the point of
hospitalization.

When I received his request for help, I had the time that day so I went
to his website and took a peek. His site was really a mess. I had no
idea how to tell him, I didn't want to hurt his feelings, and I simply had
no idea where to start, so instead I decided to fix it for him.

Then around a week later he emailed me and told me what happened to
him and how what I had done had made him feel so much better about
the human race. This experience touched me deeply and I still feel
I received the better gift in helping him, then he did from my help.

With his permission I published his email experience to me. I had
three publishers request it for their own ezines.

As time has gone by I continue to receive thank you's from my readers
daily. Recently, I've had several people tell me that I was developing
a reputation for being a sweetheart... <blush>

More things are cropping up. I've never advertised that I create websites,
but over the past month I've had 5 requests and earned over 1000.00
filling these request.

This past week I've had several webmasters contact me for various
things, telling me that they would like to recommend my website to
their newbies and asked me if I create websites or have web hosting.

I've even had people asking me when I would release my new ebook
on building a business on the Net, as they are anxious to buy from
me.

Building a business on the Internet is a lonely business in the physical
world. Each day I must work alone and push myself to meet deadlines.
What I find that drives me are the wonderful email responses and
thank you's from my readers and people who visit my website.

These responses I get range from a simple, "thank you" to some of
the most endearing ... too embarrassing to share... responses on
my style of writing and what I write.

This to me, and I would think to anyone, has got to be worth more
than the financial gain I know I will soon have. I've never felt so well
thought of, loved, and cared about, aside from my personal friends
and family, than I do from my Net business.

Within a year my husband will be able to go back to college and
try something new. In two months I will have a car. I've not had one
for two years. It's been ruff having to rely on others to get around.

So, even though my original goal of getting my husband out of
his carpet laying business is a year off, and my new car a few
more months, I feel my Internet business is a smashing success.

I love what I do and it's very hard to take time off as I love to open my
email box and see all those lovely responses from my readers.

So, there you have it, my little, although hard to talk about myself
in this way, success story. :-)

Warmest Regards,
Chrisi Darrington

Subject: Propay merchant account

Hi,

I was one of the people that signed up for the propay merchant account.
>From what I read on their site it seems to be one of the best deals on the
internet.
And I have looked at quite a few.  Their transaction and percentage fees
fall in line with most brick and mortar banks without the application fee.
The only shortfall that I have found is that they are not very punctual in
replying to applicants.  I have not heard anything from them since applying
over a week ago.
I am not letting that get me down as I can be patient for something that
will make my life a little easier.  By the way I really like your
newsletter.  It is one of the few that I read entirely because of the
content.  Keep up the good work.
Thank you,
Robert Donlon

From: "Doug" <webmaster@surfwebsite.com>
Subject: Propay merchant account

Hi Bogdan,

Yes, I was one of those 100, or so, that signed up for ProPay after reading
about it in your newsletter. It is a nice, slick set up.

However, the major disadvantage of it appears to be the need for additional
steps in acquiring the information in a business setting. Either I have to
gather the customer's credit card info myself (and submit it to ProPay) or
the customer is sent an e-mail requesting the s/he do so. That process may
be OK for "one-on-one" transactions, but it is impractical for web sites in
which information is sold (and needs to be immediately transferable) or
where products are sold (and need to be shipped quickly).

I intend to keep my ProPay account for those situations in which I need a
unique "one-on-one" type transaction (whether for business or personal
reasons), but otherwise, I think places like ClickBank and i-Escrow (for
those who don't want their own  "merchant account") are still better.

Sincerely,
Doug

From: "Tony Murtagh" <murtagh@bigfoot.com>

In issue #186 Boris Erickson wrote.

>I am looking for a critique of my newest site
>http://www.promotionstation.com

Hi Boris,
had a look at your site and would like to make two comments.
First, it took me a little while to work out what the site was about. Your
first headline should be to attract a visitors attention and hold their
interest. What does "Promotion Station Addexchange" mean?

Suggest you come up with an eye catching headline emphasising the benefits
to the visitor of your service. Without giving it much thought, how about
something along the lines "Discover how text adds can double your sales". At
least that gives the visitor a reason to look closer at your site.

The second comment is that half of your site seems devoted to the benefits
of text links over banners (which I agree with by the way) but your only
"recommended resources" item is a Banner Exchange Programme!

Trusting that you will find the above comments useful.Tony Murtagh

===================G u e s t A r t i c l e (1)=====================
"Don't Rely on your Spellchecker or The Importance of Good Proof Reading"
By Tony Murtagh

In last issue of Adland Digest Bogdan published an article of mine entitled
"Don't Loose Visitors Because of Poor Site Design" - it should, of course
have read "Don't Lose Visitors....." He mailed me pointing out my mistake
and I apologised, blaming my spellchecker for the error and jokingly
suggested
that I could write an article on the subject - he replied that I should!
Never being one to shirk a challenge, here it is: -

"Don't Rely on your Spellchecker or The Importance of Good Proof Reading"

Weather posting a page to your Website, writing a letter to a customer, or
submitting an article for publication, it is extremely important to
demonstrate how professional you are. Not only does a series of spelling and
grammatical errors show a discourtesy to your readers, it makes you look
amateurish - potential customers will lose any trust they may have had in
your business. Only yesterday, I read a classified ad asking me to visit
their "sight" - needless to say I did not bother. If someone can not take
care over their advertising, how reliable is the rest of their business.

Perhaps you are not very good at spelling - or typing - and your articles
and letters are riddled with mistakes - probably when you were working for
an employer you had a secretary to type your male  - so what are you going
to do?

The first thing, but NOT the only thing, is to use your spellchecker. This
is fine to get rid of the typos and obvious spelling mistakes, but does not
correct any instances of you typing in the wrong word (as I did) e.g. there
(denoting a place) or their (belonging to them).

So read your work back after you have written it. If it is an important
item, print it off and read it a little while after you have typed it.
Ideally, get someone else to reed it and mark off any errors. When I was
involved in publishing, it was always a strict rule, even with the most
experienced writers, to get someone else to check their work. It is
surprising how often one is unable to spot one's own mistakes.

So to summarise, use your spellchecker, re-read the item yourself, print out
and proof read and ideally get someone else to do the proof reading.

One last point, make allowances for the fact that some articles are written
in "British" English, as opposed to "American" English. So if you see color
spelt colour, or center spelt centre, the author has not misspelt the word,
he is just British (or at least has the British version of English on his
spellchecker.)

And finally, there are three deliberate mistakes in this article where I
have deliberately used the wrong word (at least I HOPE there are only
three!!) in order to demonstrate the point I am making. The first three
readers to email me detailing the errors will each be given a FREE ad in my
newsletter.

Little Tim was in the garden filling in a hole when his neighbor
peered over the fence.  Interested in what the cheeky-faced
youngster was up to, he politely asked, "What are you up to

"My goldfish died," replied Tim tearfully, without looking up,
"and I've just buried him."

The neighbor was concerned. "That's an awfully big hole for a
goldfish, isn't it?"

Tim patted down the last heap of earth then replied, "That's
because he's inside your stupid cat."
