Greetings All

Welcome  160   new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

                                        ----===(*)===-----

Hi Everybody.

Did you ever have feeling like hell was just nearby?
This is what  happened to me recently.

Last week I have decided to upgrade one of my servers
with an extra processor, to get ready for more traffic when
site Freebonanza.com goes live in a few weeks.

After I installed an extra CPU, I started upgrading operating
system to recognize this extra CPU. Guess what? My server
wouldn't start anymore nor re-installing of operating system
would help.

I had to find a new solution. After about three days and most part
of nights during these three days, I was working to bring my
installation back where it was. Only new Windows 2000 Server
would install on the upgraded machine and I had to learn several
features of  this new operating system in order to integrate this new
computer with the rest of the network. (for those with technical
background this computer was Primary Domain Controller).

I had to find a way to support my site AdlandPro.com
and a few other services because the process of upgrading of one
of the main servers was supposed to take one hour at most and
it took three days. My email server wasn't working and several
sites of my customers were down.

I'm starting to understand what Mike Enlow meant when he
said that were things are going bad, something incredible will
happen.

What I can see from this, is the fact that I was able to run
my business  even if one of its main components  failed for
almost three days. I was forced to use newer technology
which is going to help me with a few issues which otherwise
I wouldn't touch for the fear of breaking what is working
fine now.
These three days were hell for me, but I realized that all precautions
(backups, security measures, duplication of certain functions) paid
off.
Now I can get back to usual things and  continue even stronger.

                                        ----===(*)===-----

Several readers wrote me about last digest article
"Don't Rely on your Spellchecker or The Importance of Good Proof Reading"
and sent me their spelling mistakes as a response to author challenge.
They should be sent directly to him but I notice later that email address
provided with the article, was an address to subscribe to his mailing list,
which probably was not only confusing but not quite right way to do it.
Sorry for that.

===================Success Story===================
From: "Ray Dobbs" <cabins@lakeroberts.com>

Bogdan,

Please consider this little story for your article.

My Internet Success Story

Fifteen years ago while working for one of the largest
companies in California. The newspapers and magazines
seemed to always be running articles about "The Super
Highway" and "The World Wide Web" COMING SOON.

These new terms did not mean much to me or my
co-workers at the time. We thought they were only for
large companies. Like the one where we were working.
After all the company was already computerized. They
had rooms full of computers and a whole night shift
full of people punching cards, processing and printing
reports. All to be on the proper desk first thing every
morning.

In the maintenance department we were involved in
both the punched cards and the reports. Everyday
we recorded our time and charges to whatever
we worked on that day. Once in a while a boss
could say a certain project or job is over budget.
Use this other number on your punch cards.
Seemed reasonable at the time. Then sure enough
someday in the office is on the carpet trying to explain
a charge of nine pairs of safety toe knee-high rubber
work boots. So need less to say we knew what the
expression,"Garbage in/Garbage out" meant.

Was still not sure about The Super Highway" and
"World Wide Web" stuff. And had no idea that within
a few months I would have my own little business
listed there for the masses to see and buy everything
I could think of to sell them. Dreams, dreams. oops!
(back to the story)

With some planning and a little luck I was able to
give up that job. Give up the benefits, the holidays,
the paid sick leave and a months vacation very year.
Just to be in business for myself. With luck and
planning I've had my own time for these past 13
years. It would be impossible to think about ever
being an employee.

By luck, no real planning on my part a young man
came by our business one day selling home pages
on the internet/World Wide Web. WOW! there is
that word again. What is a home page? Who cares.
He is going to put our little business up there on that
"Super Highway." Everybody that drives up there is
going to see our sign. They will be wanting to stop
here to shop maybe even stay over night. Boy I
better start planning. And better find out more about
this "Super Highway traffic" he was talking about.
First to the Yellow Pages. Not a single match, No
World Wide Web, No Super highway, nothing.
I remember reading schools and universities are
on the big highway. So I called the local university
and the guy says yes but you can not there from
here. Then he talked about some letters and numbers
that we do not have until the phone company does
something. But he can talk to the computer at the
University of Arizona by dialling a number and resting
the phone on his desk some place.

The call to the phone company was not much better.
They were doing something to a backbone and some
tees. But had heard about a new company called
American Line. Turned out to be AOL still not useful
here.

By this time I'm convinced the young man has taken
my money and skipped town. No such thing as being
on "The Super Highway." I needed to get my hands on
that guy.

Sometime later I received a phone call from a man in
Chicago. He had seen our site on the web. Oh!! was I
excited!!! This is better than the first money in the mail
box one experiences in the mail order business. Believe
me. Money in the mail is a real natural high.

That first call lasted for a long time. The man from Chicago
had a lot of information about computers and the internet.
He said, "He could send mail to my computer" but not
to my 1984 Apple. Guess I really had a lot to learn.

Today, I can say my success on the internet has been
mostly luck, joy, excitement, learning and a labor of love.
How lucky I was to get a home page. Even before I
knew what it was. The young man that sold me that page
is now our ISP.  The man from Chicago has made millions
of dollars on the internet. I hear from him often and see
his site advertised everyday. What a joy to know some
one like him.

As for me. I hope to never get over the excitement of it
all. Everytime I get an email or phone call that says,
"I was your site on the internet." I get so excited.
Sometimes I can hardly speak. Isn't it Great?

From: "Doug" <webmaster@surfwebsite.com>
Subject: Propay merchant account

Hi Bogdan,

With respect to your comment about ProPay in Issue #187:

This comes directly from their site:

"Web Pay
Click on "Web Pay" and just enter your buyer's e-mail address, the amount
you're requesting, and the reason for the charge. We'll send your buyer a
confirmation e-mail. Once your buyer clicks on the URL that we provide and
enters his or her credit card information, ProPay will promptly put the
money in your account."

Now, unless I'm missing some vital piece of information (and I did look at
Adland's page advertising ProPay),
this process seems clumsy to the Net business person, trying to make sales
over the web. If you're a web site trying to sell downloadable programs (or
ebooks, or other information), this process that ProPay uses interrupts the
"impulse buy" of your customer. And that is not a good thing, needless to
say. The steps would go like this:
1. Customer enters information indicating he/she wants to buy including
e-mail address, which is sent to you.
2. You then must notify ProPay of this information.
3. ProPay then notifies your customer and requests credit card info.
4. Customer must now enter *more* information and return it to ProPay.

Now, even if that process is done *immediately*, you run a terrible risk of
the buyer getting "buyer's remorse" in the scant few seconds that
information is being passed back and forth. Again, too many steps.

To me, the *ideal* purchase chain of events is:
1. Buyer clicks (on your web site) "purchase here" & page appears ready to
receive credit card info.
2. Buyer gives credit card info, clicks something like "purchase" and the
deal is DONE!

No time for buyer's remorse, second guessing or other delays that can
inhibit the transaction.

I use i-Escrow and frankly, they require too many steps to make a purchase.
That is a big reason why, by Sept. 1, I'll be switching over to a smoother,
less cumbersome process.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. :)
Sincerely,
Doug

Note from Editor

I have contacted Propay rep regarding this above notes
and also those in the previous issue.
He told me that there is a way to make the whole process
automated and was supposed to look into technical
side of it.
He  will get back with this to me as soon as he knows
the details.

Anyway I will wait for more info and will post it here when
available. Meantime if you haven't  had chance to check
this new method of free merchant account, see it here.

Subject: Don't Rely on your Spellchecker or The Importance of Good Proof
Reading

Dear Tony,

I just finished reading your article in Adland Digest # 187.  I am a teacher
and a mother of three children, one who is dyslexic and has great difficulty
with spelling.  I am constantly trying to teach my kids how to proof read
what they have written.  It is a skill that most children and as well as
adults do not use.  Once they have written something, it is finished and
they never seem to go back and read it over again.  With anything my kids
write for school, i.e. a project or composition, I always sit with them and
we proof read it together. I have found that one of the best methods for
doing this is reading what you have written aloud.  It is amazing how my
children find their own mistakes this way. I am sure that this method would
work well for your adult readers too.   In any case, I am probably too late
to enter your contest, but I did catch your mistakes, you used weather
instead of whether, reed instead of read and  male for mail.  Were you also
aware that you can spell the word spelt or spelled?

I have only recently begun to receive Adland Digest and find it most
helpful.  I am also fairly new to the internet, my site is less than a year
old but I try very hard to make sure that the grammar and spelling I use is
correct.  I would love to have some useful feedback, as this is something
that I find difficult to get even from friends and family.  Your input would
be very much appreciated.

In any case, even if I don't win your contest or have my site reviewed, I
hope you enjoy my letter and share my tip with your readers.

Sincerely,

Pam Wener

Subject: Don't Rely on your Spellchecker or The Importance of Good Proof
Reading

Hello Bogdan,
Well it has been a while since I have submitted anything your fine
publication but sometimes you one can only take so much and then
feel that they must speak out. I am now at that point in regards to
some points I would like to make about Mr. Murtaghs most recent post:
===================G u e s t A r t i c l e (1)=====================
"Don't Rely on your Spellchecker or The Importance of Good Proof Reading"

First off we are asked to locate the "three" spelling error's made on
purpose
in the article, Now that in itself is quite a task if you only set out to
look for
three mistakes.
1) In the title :  Spellchecker should be Spell-checker
2) In the 1st paragraph : Weather should be whether
3) In the 2nd paragraph male should be mail
4) In the 4th paragraph again spellchecker in missing the hyphen
5) In the 5th paragraph reed should be read
6) in the 6th paragraph summarise should be summarize
7) In the last point we see the use if the word "spelt" and while it
might appear to be used correctly as Mr. Murtagh is not located in
North America and some people will defend its use in place of the
correct word "spelled", we should look at the dictionary and we will find
it has a proper use in the past tense. It was not used in the past tense
in this instance.

We also find that the following is a more accurate use of the word:
http://www.dictionary.com
spelt1 (spelt)
n.
A hardy wheat grown mostly in Europe.
[Middle English from Old English from Late Latin spelta, probably of
Germanic origin; akin to Middle Dutch spelte, wheat.]

Upon further investigation we can find :
http://www.graylab.ac.uk/cgi-bin/omd?spelt
spelt
<botany> A species of grain (Triticum Spelta) much cultivated for food in
Germany and Switzerland.
Synonym: German wheat.
Origin: AS. Spelt, fr. L. Spelta.
<chemistry> Spelter.
See: Spalt.
Source: Websters Dictionary

A little looking will turn up many uses of the word, including the use of it
as a replacement for the word spelled, however in this case, this was not
the correct time or way to use it. It would also be more considerate of the
writers target audience to use the correct spelling for them as opposed to
what might appear as a set up word to point out perhaps an arrogance of
some sort.

Being a Canadian I have grown up with the world of different spellings
between
Canada and the United States, I therefore consider that when communicating
with my Clients in The USA. It is a courtesy I like to extend to them.

Now on to the biggest mistake of all that I could possibly ever find in this
article. Mr. Murtagh has asked that we e-mail him about the errors and we
can have a free ad. Well the only e-mail link included was a "subscribe to"
link, so perhaps his newsletter subscription rate just went up a little, but
that
was, in my opinion, a very un-professional "mistake" on the part of
Mr. Murtagh. He failed to give his own e-mail address for correspondence
on this subject.

Sincerely,
Peter G. Browne

Subject: Do FFA's Work?

Hello All,

I have been spending considerable time working on marketing my 2 businesses
and thought I would try the free for all links as an option. I have also
tried the free massive URL Submitter Page (http://www.urlsubmitter.com) and
have really not found any of them to produce a huge number of hits or sales.
It seems that all I get is a huge number of emails and repeated emails
asking me to buy a product or something. Would it be better to offer a free
classified service and then reply to the person submitting that their link
is in and then promote my business as an aside? I am not sure here either as
I know many people who use hotmail or other free accounts as their dumping
address. This means that they simply delete all the replies.....
How about good message boards... Can anyone recommend any good ones that
allow business topics?
One thing I have found that works very well is posting in the Coupons
websites. I offer something free (i.e.: like a place to get a free item) and
then have (on that webpage) my offer. The best one I have found for this is
http://www.mycoupons.com. Does anyone know of any other well used coupon
sites?

Thanks,

Kent

Subject: Your Help Needed Once Again...

Hi again, Bogdan...

I'm writing to you again to request a "Site Review".  I contacted you a few
weeks back asking for the same of the first site I had ever built, which you
were good enough to include in the following issue of the Adland
Digest...the site URL was  http://www.go.to/emeraldsurfer
which is now dead!

Basically,...the response to my request was GREAT!!!  But the price of all
this attention was that my site really needed to be reworked.

I have tried to take onboard all the comments and ideas of those who were
good enough to reply  and it hasn't been easy, due to my "VERY" limited
understanding of HTML.  Anyway,...the end  result is, I feel, a big
improvement on the original and I hope that the readers will share my
views...the site can be found at:

www.go.to/onlinesurfer

...as you will see, it's aimed towards those who are new to the Net and who
have hopes of making some money online.  One point I'd like to make...before
anyone jumps on me...this site is NOT meant for those who are looking to
make a serious living from online ventures, although there are a few links
to be found that could just lead to that result!  Instead...it is focused on
those who know nothing about online marketing and who are just "learning the
ropes", happy to make a small part-time income on the side....and I think
this should be clear to everyone who visits.

The site is not totally finished, at the time of writing there are a few
pages of Links and Resources to be uploaded,...but the "Bulk" and "Feel" of
the site is in place and it should be clear to all just how the site will
look and function when it's completed...but , just like the NEt itself, the
site will continue to grow and evolve with time and feedback from those who
visit.

Your help, as always, would be great and I can't think of a better way of
going "live"!  Here's hoping...

All the best as usual...

Beat The Competition To The Punch By Getting Invited To The  Party
By Sandra Stammberger

You've done your homework.  You've created your marketing
plan.  You know about your target audience.  Now is the time
to get into their space.  The question is how? First is by
invitation.  Make darn sure you are invited, never intrude.
This means nixing the spam, no matter how inviting the bulk
mailers make it look, drop it like it a bad idea.  Which
it is.  Be smart.  Have some pride in yourself and your reputation.
If your competition is doing it, that's all the more reason
not to.  Spam will get your one thing and one thing only,
trouble accompanied by a terrible reputation.  Flames, disconnected,
pursued by courtesy zealots, and very little sales.  By the
time the opposition is done with you, you'll wonder why you
went into business in the first place.  So resist.  Stand
your ground and get an invitation before you sell.  Hey,
which is going to work better?  Tackling your client to the
ground to listen to your pitch or getting an invitation to
present your wonderful e-business idea?  Hmmm, not too hard
to figure out.

So how do you get invited to your target buyer's party?
It's really kind of simple.  Increase your Credibility and
Like-Ability.  Increasing your credibility means becoming
an authority and giving some of your time to supplying useful
information to the masses.  It's amazing how easy this can
be.  Let's try a test of the credibility factor.  Do these
next steps and see what happens.

1.  Find ten newsgroups that center around your target buying
audience.
2.  Create an email tag that advertises your business for
you.
3.  Listen for one week to the conversations in those newsgroups.
4.  Begin participating by offering useful information about
the questions and topics being posted.  Don't advertise your
business, this is what your email tag is for.  Just participate
responsibly by offering your expertise.  Be a leader, be
the voice of reason, and supply useful information.
5.  Now make a list of ten ezines that target your buying
audience.
6.  Write three informational articles. Don't write a glorified
ad about your business.  Write something useful that pertains
to your business.  Something the reader can actually take
out and use.
7.  Submit to the list of ezines.

These seven steps alone, done every week,  will
create a flow of email with questions about your business
or targeted traffic straight to your web site that will increase
sales momentum which pushes your business forward.

So, now you have increased your credibility. Expand
on that.  Once you have buying clients, ask them to recommend
you to three people they either do business with, or friends
that would be interested in your product or service.  Invite
every customer to subscribe to your newsletter and encourage
them to forward that newsletter to two other people.   This
is called word of mouth advertising and it works to accelerate
sales.  Once you have the momentum, never drop the ball.
Keep it rolling every week and watch your goals become realizations.

Now for the Like-Ability.  Get personal with your
clients.  Be friendly, real and personable.  Create a comfort
zone for your customers to reside and always, always make
them feel welcome.  The first place to place the welcome
mat is with your web site presentation.  Is it easy to load?
Does it take a special gizmo to view?  Ever wonder about
this technique?  Web sites that make you download a program
so you can view their web page.  What's with that?  It's
like telling your customer to go home and change clothes
before coming through the door to shop.  How effective can
this possibly be?  These little things antagonize people,
they don't welcome them in.

You also create Like-Ability by answering your
emails in a reasonable time frame.  This doesn't mean you
should be answering your email every 15 minutes, but you
should be checking it at least three times a day if your
doing business online.  Be polite, be friendly, and use your
emoticoms. Email is extremely sterile, so punch it up with
friendliness and emotion so your customers can see you.
You can actually learn to paint a picture of who you are
by how you write.  Put yourself into your correspondence
in upbeat, friendly ways and you will win people over.

Answer your business phone responsibly. What?
Don't have a business phone?   Get one.  It's a cheap investment
for a great image.  Then answer the phone with a smile in
your voice.  Answer professionally with the name of your
company and a welcome.  This will ease the mind of your customers
and bring them squarely into your corner.  Remember you have
four seconds to make the first impression and the first words
out of your mouth solidifies it.  Make sure the first words
are friendly, inviting, and put your clients at ease.

It's not that complicated to get invited to the party if
your willing to give a little with a smile.  And cyberspace
invitations are tickets to success.

======================Joke of the Day=====================
A young man asked an old rich man how he made his
money.

The old guy fingered his worsted wool vest and said,  "Well,
son, it was 1932. The depth of the Great Depression. I was
down to my last nickel.

"I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the entire day
polishing the apple and, at the end of the day, I sold the apple
for ten cents.

"The next morning, I invested those ten cents in two apples. I
spent the entire day polishing them and sold them at 5:00 pm
for 20 cents. I continued this system for a month, by the end
of which I'd accumulated a fortune of $1.37.

"Then my wife's father died and left us two million dollars."
