Subject: What am I doing wrong with the SE?
A few people have been asking "What am I doing wrong with the
SE?" and "How can I get a better SE ranking (for free)..etc..
I'd like to address some of this if I may. IF you are already quite
knowledgeable about how to get high SE rankings - then you know
that It is very nearly impossible anymore to get a #1 SE ranking
*for free*. What I mean by that is the first places on the SE are
there because of one of 3 things or all of them combined.
1.) They are paying Coastal Sites or the like BIG $$$ to do it.
(why? because they can do it)
2.) They have learned to use and USE Webposition Gold.
(why? because there are 1000's of people competing for the
same keywords)
3.) They study countless hours & continue to study countless
hours to figure out the latest algorithm and optimize for it, study
the competition for countless hours and figure how to knock them
out, and then of course figure out which SE accept hallways and
doorways and who considers it spam...and it goes on and on and
never ends...(why? because their cheap? (haha) )
My Take on these:
1.) I cannot afford Coastal sites but I Have picked the brain of one
who is their equal and I have gleaned a thing or two. One thing is
certain-The SE algorithms are always changing and its tough to
keep up with that. e.g....Google reads the BOLD words and it
doesn't care one hoot if you have meta tags or not! Actually....the
fact is this - A Lot of the SE positioning does NOT depend on
metatags-contrary to the very popular rumor about that. ;}
2.) Webposition Gold takes time to learn to use. If you are not
willing to take **school** on it - don't waste your $350.00. If you
are willing to learn how to use it and USE it - it is worth 10 times
that much $ and more.
3.) I am nearing the end of my rope with trying to stay ontop. I do
not have enough time anymore. If that were my line of work, I
would but I have a business to run. It has been interesting...I have
enjoyed some really great rankings and still do. (Example - I am
#1 on Hotbot for spyware - I am #1 on AOL for SSN and I am #1 on
Northernlights for unlisted phone numbers...etc....) I am not just
talking through my hat here thus the reason I give those examples.
you may be asking by now...THE POINT TO THIS IS WHAT?
the POINT is - there is no free SE lunch!!! and don't let anyone
scam you different. Check out www.searchenginewatch.com
for *some* tips.
But there are a lot of other ways to get a lot of traffic without the
SE and they do NOT include spammy ffa pages.
They include things like a constant updating of links. You need to
have 1000's of links pointing to your site! You need to brainstorm a
unique idea that will make people WANT to link to you. Go to
www.linkpopularity.com and see where
YOU stand.
You need to have and to treat your affiliates like little gods! ;}
You need to have people bookmark your site (nearly HALF of my
traffic are return buyers!), Put up a java applet that allows people
to just click to bookmark.
The **key** is Self-Generating traffic. Reports - ebooks (they are
magic!), bookmarks because they like you! and links links links...

Hi Paul and avid readers
Firstly, let me say that I was overwhelmed by the response to my request
for elp in setting up my web site. Rest assured, that I have spent many
hours eviewing all the suggestions I have been given, and I am learning
more and ore each time I get on line.
I have server practice runs with free web set ups, and will continue to
do so till I get a good handle on it, so I have no conquered the designing
the web page, but now I am stuck again trying to figure out how to get it
on to the net. I have tried several web hosting sites, but always come up
a blank when I get to the part where they want my URL. I have the details
of my domain name user name & ftp server, and my web address but I can't
seem to marry them all up and get the page on line. So it's back to the
drawing board again, and hopefully the next few hours will produce some
results. I hope by the next newsletter issue I will be asking you to
preview my site lol.

Dear Bogdan,
It really felt good to have such a generous response to
my request for a site review (#192) and I would like to
personally thank Tony, Frank, and Melody. I have made
considerable changes based on your feedback.
The first thing I did was create a page for the computer
courses, and a page for the business. Then, just after the
review, a friend actually introduced me to a new marketing
site which is exactly what I needed. It offers $195.00 of
free downloads which requests the visitor's email address before
downloading. It has a fantastic system of followups already
in place, loads of free tools, and an excellent money making
system.
I have redesigned the intro page. I found another provider
that doesn't put the pop-up window. Anyone looking for some
free webspace with a sitebuilder that uploads files should
take a look at www.tcfb.com
I still have an advertising banner because of my url redirect,
but it is unobtrusively displayed at the bottom of the page. If
my business takes off I will be able to afford to pay the $18
for it not to be displayed. It has been extremely useful having
this url redirect from www.v3.com, because I can
use it in my
adverts, but direct the visitor to whichever site I want. So I
have easily changed by webpage provider without having to
change my adverts.

Bought a version of "owrefinder" from infoUSA a couple of years ago.
It
contains phone numbers all across the country. I only need the State of
Vermmont. I lost the Eastern disk and have been trying to buy a new set
of CDs. The current iteration of their software only allows the e`xport
of a couple of thousand names before they start asking for more money.
The data cannot be sorted by zip code.
Do you know of any other company that sells phone numbers on CD. Not
that usual list companies, they're very expensive, and usually not
accurate.

Real Networking

What do you think of when somebody brings up networking? The dreaded
Opt-in mailing lists, never-ending Newsgroups, or maybe it's those virtual
or
tele-meetings with other professionals?
The main idea behind networking is to gain the respect of other businesses
and individuals for the contribution you and your company can make. You
rarely gain any alliances from an Opt-In list that is made up of different
businesses or individuals trying to push their products or services onto
each other. It's nothing but a nameless, faceless barrage of ads. And, for
all the virtual legwork required in newsgroups, the very few connections
that you might make there are far outweighed by the time you will spend
doing it. I do have to admit that with the different types of electronic
meetings that are available today, they are comparably better than
newsgroups or opt-in's, but still cannot compare to Real Networking.
Here in a simple form, is an example of my networking:
The scene: Local Health Club. Admittably, a good place to meet other
individuals who might have a chance of being in the position to be a part
of a successful network cycle for me.
I see Don working out on the stair stepper. I know Don to see him here,
but
have never really held a good conversation with him. I know that Don
repairs computers for a lot of the small businesses in the area. I am
myself am a web designer. The first part of initializing a network partner
is getting that line of communication open. I go over jump on the
stair-stepper next to Don. I begin striking up a (non-business)
conversation with Don. I eventually ask him what business he is in. Don
tells me just what I expected to hear. He owns his own computer repair
business and does a lot of work with smaller local businesses. I tell him
that I also work with the same type of businesses in the Web Design field.
I then ask Don if when the session is over may I have one of his business
cards, and when the occasion arises, would he mind if I referred any of my
customers needing his services. Well, unless Don was already so
overwhelmed with work, he would certainly not mind getting some new
business. Please remember this. One keynote of networking is not to
expect something in return. What you're looking for here is a future
network contact, not your next meal.
Don and others like him are my Real Network. If the occasion arises I will
send Don some work. (Note: Be cautious here. From other sources I already
know Don's capabilities and business tactics. He's experienced and fair.
Do not risk other network connections by referring them to someone who is,
shall we say less than reputable). But whether I send any work Don's way
or
not, I've opened the door to a whole new network of possible contacts.
This
conversation alone will stay with Don. I am talking to him as a friend,
willing to do him a favor if the occasion ever arises. For which in turn I
am hoping, not expecting Don will do the same. I have measured the chances
and thought that Don deserved my attention and a place in my network. If I
am successful, Don will feel the same.
Well, it's been a little over a year since then and my association with
Don, which still is limited to talking and joking around at the health
club, has netted me, or Networked me 7 new clients. 3 of which Don
referred to me directly, and 4 which were referred by his referrals. That
my friend may seem like small potatoes to you, but never the less is Real
Networking.
