Joke of the Day
=========================

================== Word from publisher ====================

Greetings All

Welcome  180 new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

                                          ----===(*)===-----

In my every day practice I try to stick to the topic and keep
with ideas related to my business.  Although this what I will write
here  might not seem like related to the business  as we usually
want to see it, I will try to show that it is a 'Business'.

In this digest we are discussing issues regarding what to sell,
how to promote and how to develop business.

I have two daughters one 10 and other 12.
They both see what I'm doing each day and they are quite
knowledgeable in the internet and computers like for their age.

The older, Antosia, started her first website  about a year ago.
http://www.kasime.com This was just site about game called
petz

Quality of this site  is much higher than quality of many,
many sites I visit each day due to the affiliate program
I'm running and my business in general.

Recently she started site related to horses. She loves
horses. http://www.horseable.com
Again you will notice that quality of this site is  very high
although the site itself is simple.
She is asking me each day. Daddy, when do you think this
site will start making money? And I  always say, you need
to work on it each day, add more stuff to it and one day
you will see opportunity to earn some money from it.

It  is always astounding me, why she would like to make
some money. She hates going shopping, but she would like
to have a horse.
Need to reach some goals, drives her to do the work
with that second website. She has to search internet
for information related to what her site needs and enter it.
She learned HTML, some Java Script and now manipulation
of database not even knowing about it.
She recently started receiving submissions from visitors to her
site and this stimulates her again as site is becoming live.
She is very excited and can spend hours working on her site.
If you have any information about horse stables in your
are, you are welcome to submit it here. She will be happy
to see it.
http://www.horseable.com/stableform.asp

My point here is that if this 12 year old child can see
possibility of  building her own business, and  believe
that she can profit from it in the future. If she can
understand  that quality of her work  might be opening
door to her success,  why  many grown-ups are
chasing possibility of quick and easy money?
Why they believe that this opportunity is better than
the other and join each program which shows up,
instead of working on just a few selected ones.

Why they can't start  something from the bottom-up
and work on it till it shows some value and inspire confidence.

Business is about
1. Trust
2. Quality
3. Packaging
4. Service
5. Perception
8. Honesty.
9. Perseverance

If any of the above points gets compromised,
you are not in business anymore. You are trying
to survive.

=================What is wrong with our site?=====================
From:Boris Kontsevoi

Last year I have asked this community for help with evaluation of our web
site proposing a case study. We offer web design and e-commerce solutions.
Our site's URL is below. We've got may good suggestions and utilized some of
them changing the content, introducing payments by credit cards, trying
different forms of Internet advertising, etc. We did increase traffic to our
web site in about 3 times.

We have some results that I would like to share with you and ask your advice
on some immediate consequences from our experience. Our advertising has the
following results (the first number is CTR, the second average cost per
visitor):

Search Engine positioning <0.1% ~$2.50
Banner Ads, Google AdWords ~0.5% ~$2.20
Opt-In e-mail ~23% ~$1.20
Classifieds ~0.2% ~$1.10
Pay per click search engines 0-2.6% ~$0.04

Of course, it's our particular results and others may have different numbers
but the main conclusion is that there is no such thing as cheap Internet
advertising. Any form of advertising, except pay-per-click search engines,
leads to over $1 spent per visitor. It would be OK as soon as your web site
has "sufficient" visitors-to-leads conversion ratio but here we have got a
problem. Our "visitors-to-leads" conversion ratio is lower than 1%. And this
is not sales yet. Just leads. In fact, we are receiving more offers from
other companies and job inquiries than orders from our web site. Then the
question: Is something wrong with our web site?

We have conducted some polling and got the following results:
- 75% of respondents were satisfied with site's design and content
- 55% said they "may be back for purchase"
(If somebody is interested in more details, please contact me.)

So, the web site seems to be OK but where is the problem? An extremely
competitive field? Still something wrong with our web site? Could you review
the site and advise what should be changed to increase "visitors-to-leads"
ratio and direct purchases from the site? I would very appreciate your help.

A final note about "pay-per-click" search engines. They seems to be
effective but it's not a panacea too. The main problem of "targeted
keywords" advertising is that you can't be sure what one really needs when
searching for "your" keyword. In our case, for example, searching for
"Flash" may mean that one needs information about Flash, or wants to see
some movies, or investigates competition, or is looking for a job, etc. Not
necessary wants to order a Flash movie. Based on indirect results of our
polling mentioned above and analysis of our GoTo traffic I can suppose that
at least 60% of "targeted" visitors are not really "targeted". They were not
looking for a vendor but for something else. It's interesting question
itself because strongly affects "visitors-to-leads" ratio.

Thank you,
Boris Kontsevoi

for anyone who wants to build a web site but does not yet know what to sell, I

Hello Adlanders! 'hope everyone had a nice weekend!

This in response to Vivian Ellison's letter.

Your concerns were: you'd like to put up a web site and start a business but
nothing to sell. Of course, if you'll just look around there'd be lots of
merchandise to sell on the Internet. But the real problem is... what really
sells?  Millions of people get into the internet everyday for personal reasons
and/or business (they might have same interests/reason as you do :-) Well, here'
s a business I'd like you to look into and take consideration.

Millennium 2000 VIP (Virtual Internet Provider), program has been designed by
PROFESSIONAL INTERNET MARKETERS. Whether you are looking to earn an extra $300
to $500 per month part time or greater if your serious enough to aim much h
igher. As a Millennium 2000 VIP you have your own home based Web Hosting service

business onlin e. The Automated Tools allow your customers to register their
domain names, build and manage their web sites. You can sign up customers from

Subject: Don't know what to sell

Hey Vivian,

You don't have to set up an actual business or sell a product.  Do a website on
something you like or in something that you are very skilled.  You can then add
any link you'd like to your website.  Check out my website...it's advertises my
free ezine, but the website looks like (and I claim it is) run by my cats,
http://www.villageoftidbits.bigstep.com/ .  I've gotten a great positive
response to my website.  My subscribers email me frequently because of it.

The smart thing to do then is join Adland as an affiliate, (you can join for
FREE), they will then give you a link to add to your website, and when people
come to your website they can submit free ads through your affiliate page
through Adland.  I did!  Be sure to advertise that link on your website.  If
you've joined any other affiliate programs, you can add those too to your
website and offer them as free gifts.

I tried to do a webpage with Yahoo, but found it very difficult to do.  Try
Bigstep, they are so EASY. Just keep clicking on a continue button, and in
minutes you will have a very professional looking website, that is uniquely
yours for FREE!  They have such a variety of choices!  You can even upload
animated icons from your computer, (you can find these on the internet, do a
search on them) and add them to your home page and you can add custom pages to
add them to your website with your icons.  They even have a page set up for you
where you do your own surveys.

You can even start your own ezine.  Bigstep has a page to where you can create
and send out your newsletters, and it has a page to keep your Customer Database,
and you can even group your customers.

Whatever you do, Vivian, be sure to have FUN doing it!  I'm having a ball
running my website and doing the ezine.  The relationships I've bonded with my
subscribers is phenomenal.  I wouldn't trade that for all the money in the
world!  I hope this helps!

Best of success to your dreams, Vivian!

In His Joy,
Seqkat

Hello Vivian,

The best way to start making money on the Net is by
promoting affiliate programs. Most of the affiliate programs
give you ready made ads, coaching to promote their business.

The best affiliate program according to me is the Site Sell
program. All affiliates get a 220 page manual full of
exciting information.

After you are confident of promoting affiliate programs, you
can then create your own product and your own web site :-)

Hello Ed,

I'm a first time poster here although I've been a
subscriber for some time.

Your request for information on the Newbie Club
caught my eye, however.

If you knew my background, you would understand
that I do not make recommendations frivolously.  The
Newbie Club, however, is one of the finest affiliate
programs that I've had the privilege to associate with.
Their products are top-notch and fill the needs of the
user.

As an example, I gifted an elderly friend of mine with
their book "Windows For Newbies."  This friend was
so totally computer illiterate that she barely knew how
to power up the system.  The difference between then
and now is tremendous.  I've seen this product in action
and strongly recommend it for anyone.

In personal communication with both Joe Robson and
Tom Glander, I've found them both to be professional,
honorable and of the highest integrity.

Hope this helps you in your decision making process.

From:Mary Holzrichter
Subject:The Newbie Club

Hi Bogdan and everyone:

I've been a member of The Newbie Club for some months.
I, too, love this program for the fact that it does have tangible
products which are outstanding.  Everyone has to decide what
is right for them.  If you believe in the programs where the main
objective is to sign up members, more members, and then some
more members, etc., then that is your prerogative. To each his own.
But I feel uncomfortable with that type of program.  Heck, I like
to know what it is I'm selling!  How many people do you know
who when you ask them, "What are you selling?", you never get
a definitive answer?  Just kind of a glazed-over look?  Again,
I'm not judging anyone, but it's not for me.

The Newbie Club (of course I'm prejudiced!) is a REAL program
with REAL products.  Tom Glander and Joe Robson, the co-founders,
are great to work with, and there's no promise of overnight riches or
hype.  You get paid every month whatever it is you've earned  (35% on
first level - 10% on second level.).  It's got fantastic support, and
it's free to join.  And they don't surprise you after a month or so
either, by charging a monthly fee!  It's totally "upfront".  You have
to work at it, promote it,  and as John Colanzi,  mentioned in his
article about any program,  you HAVE to help those who sign up
under you.  You won't make much money at anything if you don't
"give"!   It's the same on the net as it is in a "9 to 5" job.  And,
you'll feel a lot darn happier with yourself in the process and be
able to look yourself in the mirror the next morning.

Greetings Ed;

So, why did you join the Newbie Club as an affiliate? Go back and buy some
of their products, download their free tutorials and really get to know
them.  While you're at it you can also find out about Joe Robson and Tom
Gladner.

I've spent well over $10 000.00 to learn about computers and it's related
subjects. The Newbie Club offers fantastic value.

Something you really need to consider about their program though, is how you
are going to integrate it with your current site.  (I'm assuming that you
have one). Does any of the learning programs fit the needs of your visitors?
It's not enough to say,  well these are programs that would be fantastic and
beneficial to everyone. (This is true with anything that you want to get
into).

Numerous people posting in this digest have already said it: It's not what
you promote - it's that you do promote. AND that you learn everything that
you can about what you're promoting. Mine those resources; the best programs
have tons of info, help, forums, guides and what have you... It's up to you
to use them and tailor them for your needs.

Best of Luck;

I take the emails that I get for being a PRO Member and plug
them into my Autoresponder.  This followups up twice over a 2

DEFINITELY Works.  I can show you my tracking logs   :-)

Also, posting to their Database DEFINITELY works as well,
especially if you're a PRO Member.  I post there 1 time per
day and probably get about 10 hits to my site because of it.
Now 10 hits per day isn't a lot, but if you combine that with the
Emails you get to follow-up with......  I don't think there's a
better lead generation site around.

If you're not getting results from your FFA Postings, CHANGE

Hi. Bogden.

About the Small Biz FFa program.

I first applied some months ago.

Firstly there was all the emails from Tommy K
usual stuff how great the product was and telling me to upgrade now.

I wrote to him several times asking him to stop sending me his rubbish.
Just to get him off my back I decided to upgrade.

First of all my credit card didn't work because of the secure server.
But after about 50 e mails requesting support and not even one reply.
I found the answer myself.

In principle the program is as good as any other,
but the tech support seems to be none existent.

I know we are talking others out of joining under us.
But to be honest my reputation is worth more than the money I paid.

FFa pages are almost as much a waste of time as safe lists,
and I have used and still use many of them.

The one site I do have a lot of success with is link scout at
http://www.linkscout.com/index.cfm?spid=23267 it has FFa pages
but the classified matrix is what really works.

You can promote many sites and you have control
over your pages.

Oh the smallbizffa site. Well I bought and paid for it.
everyone needs at least one FFa site. so why not the small biz one.

Now I have upgraded the emails have virtually stopped.
only about one per fortnight now.

Thanks & Regards

Looking into Viva Rebates, I've come to the conclusion as had David Warren that
VR is a marketing ploy to get VISA cards into the hands of more consumers.  But
cards with extremely high interest rates 18 - 29%.  While no numbers have been
projected, I wou

else could they afford to pay the commissions or issue rebates?

Viva Rebates "don't and never had" any affiliations with Visa.
Below is an email I received in answer to a request which I
made directly to Visa.
<message>
According to Visa International's Risk Management personnel,
Vivarebates.com
(formerly known as Visarebates.com) is not affiliated with
Visa International or Visa U.S.A ., nor are any of its
programs related to Visa in any way.  Therefore we cannot
vouch for its legitimacy. Visa would like to remind consumers
that all "Visa cards are issued only through financial
institutions that are licensed by Visa to use the VISA
trademarks".  Therefore, if a non-financial institution is
soliciting for new Visa card applications, that solicitation
company must be registered with Visa and must prominently
identify in their marketing materials which Visa financial
institution it represents.  If the Visa card issuing bank is
not clearly identified in the marketing material, we recommend
that consumers take steps to gain additional information about
the solicitation company before responding to any Visa card
application offer.  In such a case, consumers may wish contact
the solicitation company and ask it to identify exactly which
financial institution it is working with to offer Visa cards
or other Visa services, and then contact that financial
institution directly to verify any alleged affiliation between
the solicitation company and that financial institution.
</message>
In conclusion if Viva Rebates was/is legit they would have  to
be licensed with Visa in the beginning to make any offer. If
Viva Rebates is legit now they have to be licensed by some
financial institution (tell the members what financial
institution if there is one).  If they are not licensed by any
financial institution then they are only a wisp of smoke and
can offer the members nothing.

I Really find Adland Digest very interesting, your articles on
marketing are super and  they have helped me immensely, keep
up the great work.

I don't know about this program but am curious if anyone had had
any success with www.cafepress.com? I set up my own store, have gotten
affiliates through the referral program
(http://www.cafepress.com/cp/home/storeref.jsp?refby=SpecFiction)
, but no sales.  Any comments?

_____________
CafePress is just a company that supplies products which "you"
sell from your own site with a link and/or you can promote your
store that is on their server.  The key to getting sales is
marketing.  This means on the great big info highway you have to
put up road signs because your little store at CafePress is
sitting in a cul-de-sac.

The best way I have found is to write articles and submit them to
ezine publishers.  Also by networking with other site owners and
getting reciprocal links.  Now that search engines are charging,
it means small business owners have to get more creative in their
approach to marketing -- especially if you have a shoestring
budget.

Also your product on CafePress has to be so outstanding, people
will want to buy the product because their price is not exactly
inexpensive and when you add your charge, it's even harder to
sell.  Mostly I think, they make their money from people who set
up a store and buy things for themselves.  I know I've bought my
family gifts this way with my original artwork on the mousepads
and cups.  I've bought myself a few T-Shirts also.  If they have
10,000 stores like they say they do, they have 10,000 people
buying their own stuff at "wholesale" price.  And, if you believe
that's a wholesale price, there is a bridge in Brooklyn you can
buy.

Subject:Easy Money!

I read with interest all the posts
about affiliate programs in this ezine and I am amazed anyone
would even want to do this.  Reality check folks, you are making
money for the other person.  Put the same amount of effort into
your own product or service and you will be successful.  Not in
an instant but after a few years of hard work.  Online business
practices are no different than offline.  There is no such thing
as a free lunch.  It takes time to build a successful business.

It also means finding your niche audience and marketing to it.
If your product or service is outstanding, word of mouth (email)
will take over and then success will be yours.  The advantage of
the Internet is the fact it's global.  Could I sell my stuff in
this little rural resort town I live in -- no.  But, on the
Internet I can and have.  Did I do it in a month, no.  In two
years of solid work, yes.

Oh, BTW, if the site has the word "killer" in it, run like heck.
It's the most overused word on the Internet and the next one is
"guru".  Remember there are no experts on the Internet, it
changes to often for anybody to even claim they are :-)

Subject:Easy Money!

I want to put my 2 cents in about "easy money"

I love how Brian Keating put it:
"I have been on the Internet since 1994. I have signed up for
countless programs in the hopes of making easy money. Well I have
discovered a great truth. There really is no easy money. "

I used to believe that there was some way, somehow, that I could
make a lot of money with very little effort.

One day, I woke up and said "hey, where' is this belief getting
me?"

The answer: NOWHERE! BROKE!

Brian Keating is right, there is no get rich quick.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the second I came to this
realization, not only on a intellectual level, but also, an
emotional level, is the second that I started to make some real
money online.

This is a very liberating philosophy, to *know* with absolute
certainty, that there is no way to make easy money. Because now,
you can ignore all the hype and the crap that's being perpetrated
out there, and get down to what really works.

The people who start those get rich quick deals know 2 things:

1. People are lazy
2. People want to believe that they really can make fast money...
especially on the Internet.

So don't let them pull your strings anymore.

I have never joined another self-replicated, get rich quick,
super hyped, mlm, groundfloor opportunity since the day I made
this realization. I used to find it hard to resist opportunities
but now, I don't care about fast cash, I want steady cash.

What this new belief did for me was to make me go out there and
educate to myself as to what is really working. I was no longer
constantly joining programs and posting ads in free forums, no
longer spinning my wheels. I just took a step back, looked at the
whole situation, ignored all the noise and said "ok, this is what
I have to do" And I've been doing it ever since, with very little
distractions or detours.

The key to making money is slow, steady growth. Take your focus
away from instant riches and put it on long term, secure,
business building activities and I guarantee you will find the
pot at the end of the rainbow.

Today, I am making good money online.. I have like 3 businesses
going, and more to come... Most of it is on autopilot. I'm not
making $500 a day... yet, but I will.

What's funny though, is that all of my friends whom I've known
since I made this decision long ago... are STILL chasing that
quick buck, and they have gotten NOWHERE! I keep trying to point
it out to them, in a nice way, but they just don't want to
listen. They even call my success "luck".

If you think what I'm saying makes sense, and you want to learn
what it takes to really make money online, then here are some
good courses that I recommend.

Hi Bogdan & Adland Digest followers

I read the Visa Rebates discussion with great interest, as I was tempted to
join, but shied off, even from my best friends urging, After looking at the
arguments in those articles I was wondering what you folks thought of the new
competition to win a million dollars by answering up to 12 questions. Starting
with 1 question $100 up to 12.Now I have been the most successful with this
program than anything else I have tried. You get $5.00 to join, $5.00 for
everyone you sign up and 10% of their winnings.
The question I have is all the money is coming out, I can't see where money is
coming from to get paid from. This program is due to start on 23rd Feb 2001 I
wonder if it will become like Visa Rebates.
Can anyone advise me if I am in for a big fall when money is due to be paid out
Thanks    (I hope not)

Hi,

My name is Diane Hessin, I am a fairly new reader of Adland Digest, I must admit
for the ezines I have seen and read so far it is the best. I am not sure what
the rules are, I have a request I noticed that a good part of the ezine seems to
be evaluating programs that are hot on the internet. Has anyone looked into The
Payline and does anyone have an opinion on it. I signed up just about 24 hours
ago with a free signup and already 6550 people have signed up after me. Can the
members check this out and give me their opinion of the program. It seems like
one of those that is almost too good to be true. As of now signing up is free,
but I would like opinions before it is time to upgrade.  The URL is

Hello Bogdan and fellow Adlanders,

Does anyone know anything about a company
called Synergistic Model Amortization, part of Seven Ltd.?
Apparently if I pay them $50 and recruit two people to the
scheme or alternatively send them another $100 they are
going to give me a series of loans over the next 24 months
amounting to thousands of dollars which I will never have to
repay !!!
This MUST be a scam, but just in case I
will keep the info on file for a couple of weeks!!

I design and maintain websites for different kinds of business, from
newspapers to furniture wholesales to doctors. A few words of encouragement
and suggestion:
1. What you're selling is, for the Internet, high ticket items. Make each
small photo a link to a bigger photo where they can better see what they're
buying.
2. I see no metatags in your code. These make your site much more
searchable and indexable for search engines and directories - cuts down on
your own promotion efforts. This is a MAJOR need.
3. I'd put something besides a white background on your pages. A rice-paper
color or light tan color. Give the whole site more of an oriental feel.
Keep the artwork, it's very appropriate.
4. Put more information about shipping, guarantees, etc.
5. Try a Special of the Month offer on your home page.

Just a few thoughts as I looked at your site, as requested in my Adland Pro
newsletter.

Dear Michelle Kincaid,

Please do not be in desperate. I do believe that in or business the only
thing that is of importance is our own WILL TO SUCCEED. Then it's a
matter of time.

Your problem is really traffic. Links are what you need. I might be
wrong but I think that if you don't have links leading to your site, it
doesn't matter if your website is good or bad. Almost no one will be
coming to see it.

You should look for any kind of free ways to make more traffics. But do
not fill your pages with links exchange if you are not sure that it will
bring traffic for you. It will be crazy to have hundreds of links if
your traffic is still low!!. I tried a good way to make traffic and it
works since I had some hundreds of people within a week for one of my
very new site. I urge you to check it in this site
http://www.getmoney.mustbehere.com and click on the
'webmaster special report banner' it should help you.

Don't stop with it but look for other ways.

I wish you the best success.

=====================Site Review Response  (3)===============
From:The Pencil Dude aka Robin Forbes
Subject:http://www.orientalgalleries.com

Hi Michelle;

Stop Banging your head first; I know the feeling all too well. One of my
first "commercial" projects was to set up and run a site for my Dad. It too
was a very narrowly targeted specific site for a specific type of customer.
(Real Estate Investors in our case). But that's the beauty of it all. It
will narrow down things so that the people that you do get visited by,  will
be people who are looking for exactly what you're offering.

I learned quickly that I would need to submit our web site to the search
engines and directories. Moreover, I also had to find directories that
specifically dealt with Real Estate. Have you tried doing any of that yet?
For your listing to work in the search engines though you're going to have
to add something to your web pages. That something would be Meta Tags - your
site lacks them. I posted these links back a few issues but here they are
again. They aren't a magical solution but without them you're seriously at a
disadvantage. Here are some resources to get you started:
http://www.searchenginewatch.com/webmasters/meta.html
http://WDVL.com/Location/Meta/Tag.html
http://deadlock.com/promote/search-engines/preparing.html

Next, you're going to run into the same problem that we did. We had lots of
traffic, but until I set up a method of accepting credit cards, selling our
book was next to impossible. After much research and checking different
companies out in detail I finally picked one, set the account up, generated
the links, all for free within less than an hour. A site your size would
take longer, but it would be more than well worth it. And that's when we
started getting orders. There's no set up or monthly fees, they just take a
small commission from your orders. They also have a full fledged shopping
cart system, which is a definite must have for the number of products you're
selling. You can find out more here: http://pencildude.com/spad/cc.html

Lastly; get your family friend involved in this project. He/She should be
promoting the heck out of this web site instead of sitting around waiting
for you to produce results and profit for him/her. This person should be
promoting the web site off-line every which way possible.

Tom Falco of www.TheDiscountPrinter.com has lots of great off-line promo
items that this person should be using to promote their business. Need more
ideas? Send an email to: mailto:10promotips@sendfree.com?subject=tips (you
won't be put on a mailing list).

Well I've rattled on enough, hope these ideas help you out.
Cheers;

Hi Michelle,

Frustrating, isn't it?  Have you thought
about dedicating a single page to each
item with maybe some generic history
on each?  That might add some marketing
value to the item.  Makes it more personal
and interesting.  Do any of the items have
a history that you are aware of?

They do take a long time to load with more
than one photo on the page so that might
help as well.

Have you tried the auctions?  How about
discussion groups relating to interior
decorating?  You're right, they are specific
target items and if your client won't spend
any money (duh?) then go hang out with
folks who are likely to want this type of
merchandise.

Also, just a heads up your Oriental copyright
info is mis-spelled at the bottom of page :o).

If I can think of any other ideas, I'll post them.

Warmly,

Patty Baldwin

Hey Michelle,

You do have a rare market, so to broaden it, do a free ezine.  How will you get
subscribers from the broader market...offer to accept FREE ads. Post an
advertisements like in Adland for your free ezine accepting free ads, and your
subscribers will come, and then once they come to visit your website to
subscribe they may see something they like, that they would have other-wise
chosen not to visit your site.

I did this offering an ezine on useful tidbits in unlimited genres.  I didn't
think I'd get much of a response, so I offered to accept the free ads.  I'm a
month old and am doing great!  I get any where from 30 to 60 hits a day,
sometimes less (15 the least a day) and sometimes more!  Once those subscribers
received my ezines, (and they only subscribed to post ads), they loved my ezine!
They send me wonderful comments all the time.  They love the added humor and
inspiration added throughout it.  They would have otherwise missed this ezine,
not giving it a try, but didn't miss it since they could post their ads.  I hope
this helps!  Best of success to you!

In His Joy,
Seqkat
