Greetings All

Welcome  160 new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

                                ----===(*)===-----

These days it is becoming more important than ever  to have
links to your site from other  sites. Search engines are
determining link popularity based on numbers of sites linking
to yours and are building this into their search algorithms.
The more people link to you, the bigger is the chance that
your site will appear on the top of  searches for relevant
keywords.

There is a new site which  is determining your "Visibility Index"
It measures your website's visibility on the web by counting up
all the links to your site. But rather than simply telling you how
many links you have across the world wide web, this one rates
you from "limited presence," to "contender", "player" and even
"900 lb. gorilla."
http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/

I checked  http://www.adlandpro.com and was rated  just
below  www.GeorgeWBush.com  , www.Expedia.com ,
www.DrudgeReport.com and www.Napster.com and above
sites like  www.MarthaStewart.comwww.Coke.com ,
with the total number of links  37,818 putting  me into
"Contender range" Check your site and see how you are
rated.

=================Thank You=====================
From:Diane Hessin

Hi this is Diane, I just finished reading the digest and felt like a good part
of it was directed to me. This says a great thing about your digest and your
readers. Thanks so much to all of you for taking the time to answer my
questions. I appreciate the warnings about payline, (although I did see alot of
them before the digest came out). The information about SFI is also very
helpful. I will probably be upgrading very soon. I love this digest it is very
informative and personable. Bogdan how do you manage to keep it this way with
such a large readership?
Thanks once again

=================Low cost  advertising=====================
From:Bill Reed

Just a short note in comment concerning low cost
advertising.
First off let me say this is being offered up as my
personal satisfaction with my advertising results from
using the Adland Digest paid ads.

What we sometimes think of as low cost advertising is
not really that. For instance, if you spend $20 for an
ad and get say only 20 visitors to your site ( happens
a lot) you have in effect paid $1 each to get those
visitors. This very often holds true with the very low
cost ads. Before you get all over me, I will say there
are a few exceptions.

Now if you choose to put your ad in an ezine that has
a great circulation among readers that actually read
that ezine you are going to pay a higher rate for your
ad.
But what does it mean to you in traffic?

While it may be hard to believe, but in the case of my
ad in Adland digest, I received more than 10 times as
many visitors per  dollar spent than I have in the
last 5 ads that I ran in other ezines. It was a total
surprise to me.

While my visitor to sales conversion rate did not hold
at the same percentage it was close. So it cost me
much less per sale when I ran the more expensive ad.

I some times feel that too many people get hung up on
all the hype that you can make money with out spending
money. NOT SO in the long run. You have to spend money
to make money.

As stated at the beginning this is not meant to be an
ad for Adland Digest, but  rather an actual example of
how we can very often waste our small advertising
budget on trying to find a cheap way.

When considering paying for an ad, say in an Ezine,
ask yourself this. Do I read that Ezine and look
forward to getting it. If you can answer  that
question with a yes, then that is probably a great
place to put your ad. If you don't care to read every
word of an Ezine why would you think anyone would see
your ad, since they probably aren't reading it either.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents worth into this topic to
help with understanding that sometimes cheaper is not
always better.

Great marketing to all.

Sorry but I disagree. Fancy coloured animated emails annoy me as do
autoresponders. If I send an email I expect it to be responded to by a
person who has read it! For me just keep it simple, reply promptly and
answer the questions that I ask in simple English. If I want to go to a
presentation I will. To my mind the only valid use for autoresponders is to
mail out a specific document that has been requested.

From:Kelvin
Subject:SFI

My post is in response to some comments on SFI made by
different subscribers in
issue #27.  I believe that these comments are
well-intentioned, but may
contain info that is misleading.

START QUOTE
the more members in your powerline the higher the
bonus will be
END QUOTE

Not necessarily true.  The Parent Powerline Bonus is
calculated from ALL sales made by each and every
affiliate or member in the powerline and it can be
divided into 2 components for easy understanding:

(A) the sales of FCS subscriptions, which essentially
mean the fees paid by each and every member in the
powerline every month to remain a member.
(B) the sales of merchant accounts, long distance
telephone services, seminars, OVER 400 products and
services in SFI's online catalog and more.

This is how I understand the system to work.  Let's
start with (A) first:

(1) For every new member an existing member refers, he
or she earns $10 every month as long as the new guy
remains a member.
(2) Powerline Team Leaders earn $2 for every new
member referred that they are the Powerline Team
Leader for, regardless of who referred them.
(3) a percentage of the new member's FCS subscription
fees will be channelled to the commissionable amount
that is paid to ALL members in the powerline.

As we can see, (1) only goes to the person who
actually referred the new member, and (2) only goes to
the Team Leaders.  As for the rest of the members who
did not refer the new member, they will each take a
share of (3) which is divided among all members - team
leaders and the actual referrer inclusive.

So supposedly, (3) is $9 per month taken from each
member's subscription fees, and there are 10 members
(including the new member) in the powerline, then
the commissionable amount will be equivalent to $9 x
10 = $90.  And since there are 10 members in the
powerline, each member will get a share of $90 / 10 =
$9.

Now let's do the Maths for a new scenario where more
upgrades are experienced and there are now 20 members
in the powerlines.  So if $9 is taken from each
member's subscription fees to be pooled into the
commissionable amount, the total amount will be
$9 x 20 = $180.  Hence, each member in the powerline
gets $180 / 20 = $9.

Thus, if we are talking about the (A) component of the
bonus, no matter the number of upgrades in a month,
the amount each member receives monthly remains the
same.  Which means: if NOBODY from the powerline
makes any sales from (B), the more members in your
powerline does not MEAN the higher the bonus.

However, don't be discouraged as (B) itself is a great
feature of the SFI's compensation plan which has great
potential for generating income for every member.
Work hard and promote your SFI business, and very soon

everyone will see light at the end of the tunnel.

START QUOTE
When you upgrade to member you will make at the very
least $9 per month.  You will also make $3 per month
up to 6 members below you that are NOT your referrals
END QUOTE

I checked with my team leader on the above statement
and I got this reply:

The $3 for 6 levels was an element in the 2000 plan
and is not applicable anymore. The Parent Powerline
Bonus is part of the 2001 plan.

If I have made any mistakes in explaining how the SFI
compensation plan works, I apologise and I welcome
corrections from anyone.  Thanks.

Hey Ren,

You personally referred 40 affiliates and you gave up??!  4 months is NOT long
enough!  I've watched my Power Team Leader explode, in the 7 months I've been
it, but she's been in it longer.  She's making over $500.00 per month on JUST
affiliates who upgraded to member alone!  I know she's making more, as a Power
Team Leader, and then there's people she's referred in my upline.

You will earn $3.00 per member, not affiliate, that you did NOT refer personally
up to 6 members.  That will bring you commission to $17.00 per month, bringing
down your fee to $12.95 per month. On every member, (affiliates that upgraded to
member), that you referred, you will earn $10.00 per month.  If you personally
referred 40 affiliates, (those are the free members, as you called them), you
were doing great!!!  You should have hung in there, for in time some will
upgrade to member and you will miss out on the commissions.

ALL affiliate programs take TIME!!  Affiliate programs are NOT lotteries, where
you join the right program, (pick the right numbers) and cash it in.  You have
to work the program, and you have to give the program time to succeed.

A year from now, where will you be?  Stuck at the same old job?  You could have
sat on SFI for $12.95 per month, (one restaurant meal per month), took a great
tax deduction for your monthly fees, and then could be succeeding.  EVERYONE
that makes it BIG in the affiliate programs DID it in TIME!!!  They don't do it
in just a few months!

Other SFI members, hang in there.  Don't give up!!!  Time will pass away,
whether or not you stay with SFI.  The difference will be, if you do stay with
SFI, time one day will arrive, showing you a profit.  If you could see that
tomorrow from today, you'd kick yourself for giving up!  Patience is a SWEET
virtue!

In His Joy,
Seqkat

I tend to agree with Valerie , but the one thing I
would add is I feel the current focus of the active
members is on generating more members. This is ok, but
it would seem to me with the amount of participants in
the SFI program, the focus should be on purchase and
sales of the various products. There appears to be
substantially more income to be had from retail sales
than is possible from any other venue under the SFI
umbrella. That is the direction I am preparing my team
to head. I think that way all of us can improve our
financial position in SFI. Of course, I could be
wrong. Any comments?

From:Dave Weed
Subject:SFI

Hello Fellow Adlanders!

After reading more comments concerning SFI I've decided to impart a little
insight, not only into SFI but for any MLM endeavor you choose to pursue.
Many of the comments here display the fatal flaw in most people that get
involved in MLM, they expect immediate results. This seems to have been
made worse by the *instant* nature of the Internet. Regardless of the
product(s) or the business model, it takes time to build a business. and it
takes money. In some cases not very much money, but it will always require
some. Also in order to grow a business you have to put some of the earnings
back into the business. Some don't show a profit for two years or more.
Since we are discussing SFI I'll use them as an example. After 4 months the
entire organization was only 2600, after a year just over 65,000, and now
just past the two year mark it crossed the 1 million affiliate mark. There
are still less than 35,000 members. I've noticed upgrades recently that are
from affiliates that are over a year in the organization. It takes time to
get the numbers to work for you, giving up before one year is a waste of
whatever effort you did put in. If this fits your profile you shouldn't be
trying MLM at all. How much time and money do you think Gery Carson spent
getting SFI started, When he was the only one signing people up? I'll give
you a hint, as much as he spends today, which is a lot. If you aren't
already in SFI but want a good long term opportunity email me at
mailto:birdofprey@warp-drive.com It isn't get rich quick, but you can make
money. I'll show you how.

Sincerely,
Dave Weed

===========C o n t i n u i n g D i s c u s s i o n (3.5)=============
From:Larry Stepanowicz
Subject:SFI

There's a funny thing about freebies, like SFI.
Many join but few do anything about it! After all,
it's free, so why not "get in and see what happens,"
right. With most people carrying that attitude,
it's no wonder nothing happens! But even as a
pay-nothing affiliate of SFI you can earn some
commissions on product sales. I have.

There's a lot of something for nothing going on
over the Internet. It is also a place of immense
distraction where people are constantly bombarded
with offers and have a "program of the week."  SFI
just may be in too many people's past! You know,
"been there, didn't do that!"

Besides a "let's see what happens" attitude, and the
Internet as a source of constant distraction, a lot
of people who get into SFI or anything else, really don't
know what it takes to sponsor online. "If I blast it to a
half-million FFA's and nothing happens, there must
be something wrong with the program?" Right. Or they
just don't want to do the work involved. And none of
this even takes scepticism vs. faith and belief into
account!

When I first joined SFI, I promoted it heavily and
sponsored many associates, a few of whom have
upgraded to members. But only a few in both my
personal and parent powerlines do any promotion.
Lately, most of this has been through the Eagle
and Wildfire co-ops. Point is, if you can't or won't
promote, invest in these. Yes invest! A business is
an investment!

Gery Carson has changed and crafted SFI to
make it work. Unfortunately, most don't understand
it. Commissions will eventually come in many ways,
including retail sales from affiliated outlets. Shop
at them!

Success isn't necessarily hard. It's the application of
a few basic principles that's tough...

First, pick a good program! Forget the start-ups. Most
of them quickly go down the tubes. Gery Carson has
been doing this kind of thing since 1985 and has
transferred his by-mail success and building skills to
the Internet.

Next, commit to your program! The successful
members of any program are working it. The
unsuccessful are doing something else!

Third, support your group! The successful members
stay in touch with those they've sponsored and the
rest of their downline with e-mail messages or a
newsletter. Or by phone, mail or in person if offline.

Saying this, many people still won't be happy with just
one thing. So if you must promote more than one
program, promote a system that will promote them
all for you!

My assessment 19 months later is that they have
nothing to sell except the dream of getting rich with

Programs like this that are selling

Hi Adlanders,

This post is in response to Xiutong's post in SFI.  She mentioned that she was
a member at SFI for 4 months and had personally referred almost 40 affiliates.
Unfortunately none upgraded to member and she could not make more than
$9 a month.  Finally, she cancelled her membership.

My feeling is that Xiutong is an excellent marketer, referring on average 10
affiliates a month.  However, to succeed in SFI, and for that matter, any other
business, SUPPORT is as important as marketing.

My best friend has been in SFI for about 2 weeks and he belongs to an extremely
active powerline whose team leader is one of those big earners in the SFI
president club.  Until today, this person is still very active in supporting the
affiliates in his powerline.  Although he did not personally sponsored my
friend,
for the past 2 weeks, he has been answering my friend's questions and even
showing my friend the marketing techniques he uses.  In short, the referrer,
if he is a good marketing guy, has to be able to show his affiliates how to
DUPLICATE his effort.  Unless his affiliates succeed, the referrer will NOT
succeed.  This, I believe, is the pitfall of Xiutong's venture in SFI.  She's
a good marketer herself, but she couldn't persuade her affiliates to upgrade
most probably because they couldn't seem to refer enough members
themselves to cover their monthly membership costs.

That being said, I just want to wish Xiutong a profitable future in whatever
ventures she is doing now or will do in the future.

Thanks folks for your indulgence.

Valerie

Greetings Teresa;
If you must go for free hosting then the best place I can recommend (that
I've had dealings with), would probably be Hypermart.com (they also offer
FrontPage 2000 support btw.) When I was using their services a couple years
ago they were pretty reliable as was their tech support. But like
everything, check around and compare.

As for the fee of transferring your domain. Yes it is correct that you own
your domain name. But as you do not own the server (unless you go out and
buy a server - not to be confused with renting server/hosting), then yes
some places will charge a fee to have your domain transfered over to their
servers. Many do not though, so check around. (I don't think Hypermart
does).

I have used Bizland for over 2 years now, and I have found them to be very
reliable and very helpful. I use FrontPage exclusively. They have FrontPage

cost. All of the sites are hosted for free in exchange for a banner ad of theirs
at the top of the page. It is easy to transfer a domain name there, and they do
not charge for it. Their tech support is helpful, and they respond to my emails
fast--even in the middle of the night. When you are ready to get their banner

From:Danette Braunstein
Subject:Thepayline

Hello to all Adlanders,
In response to Chris Kilian and others who have commented on Thepayline.com,
here is some interesting information I have found.
Officials warn public of possible Web scam
JO-ANN JOHNSTON
of The Tampa Tribune

PALM HARBOR - Florida consumer protection officials are warning the
public to beware of an Internet-based company that's seeking $200
membership pledges by Feb. 15, and promising, in return, the chance
to accrue airline miles and win cash rewards.
Additionally, the U.S. Postal Service has started an investigation into
the company, called Thepayline.com, confirmed Tampa spokeswoman
Linda Walker.

Local consumer officials haven't gone so far as to tell people they
should not send their money to Thepayline.com. But they are telling
consumers they see lots of red flags in the company's operation that are
often symptoms of problems.

Richard Robles, a Miami attorney investigators believe is the company
contact, did not return a phone call Monday.

One reason investigators don't like the looks of Thepayline.com deal is
that the outfit won't take credit card payments for the $200 membership
fee, which allows consumers some financial protection in case of a dispute.
The company asks prospects to mail cashier's checks or cash to a mail
stop in Palm Harbor.

There is no company office there, and the phone number connects
prospects to an answering machine in Kansas.

So prospects ``really don't know where the money is going to go, and
they should proceed with caution,'' said Deborah Berry, investigator with
Pinellas County Consumer Protection.

Thepayline.com also tries to get members to recruit other new members
who will each bring in $200 and added prospects.

This system, where customers recruit new customers, is called
multilevel marketing and is legitimately used by established companies such
as Avon.

But multilevel marketing plans are also used frequently on the Internet
to convince people to invest in fictitious goods or services that won't
sell, according to a study released last year by the Federal Trade
Commission.

The FTC would not confirm reports that is has been asked to investigate
this case.

Unfortunately, almost anyone can set up, for relatively low cost, a Web
page that makes them look as legitimate as a well-established company,
said Lawrence Wolfenden. He's a special agent for the FBI in Tampa who
is also a local contact of the national Internet Fraud Complaint Center.

Wolfenden and the FBI would not comment on whether it is looking into
the company.

In general, consumers trying to figure out whether a Web site is
legitimate should see if they can:

-- Locate the company.
-- Find out where it is incorporated and who regulates it.
-- Identify the management and its experience.
-- Read audited financial records.
-- See whether the physical address, phone number and Web domain are in
the same city, he cautioned. Offshore addresses are a bad sign.
Consumers with a question or a complaint about a Web site can consult
the Internet Fraud Center at www.ifccfbi.govJo-Ann Johnston can be reached
at (813) 259-7804 or jfjohnston@tampatrib.com

Thank goodness I did not join when I was asked to last week. You just never know
what you are getting yourself into these days.
Thanks,
Danette Braunstein

Hello Martyn,

Your question is a very good one and you would get a full
answer if you read the feature article in my own FireTalk
ezine which is due out now but a little delayed in release.
You can subscribe to it at http://www.int-resources.com

I would like to give you the answer you require here but it
would be too long to be acceptable for Bogdan's ezine.

I can tell you that even my 70 year old mother joined and
she doesn't have a computer nor email address. I will admit
that she is in it for the money and I am getting all her leads.
Nonetheless with my help she made $3170 in the last 13
days. Payment is in Australian dollars so that figure would
equate to US $1743.

The key point is that the matrix is forced and you begin
earning $1 for everyone entering your list from the moment
you get started. It's up to you to refer 4 people quickly in
order to raise that to $10 per person but it's not a daunting
task.

As the matrix is forced you watch your downline grow
regardless of how effective your own efforts are. For some
that will take place rapidly while others may have to wait
for their list to take off, but sooner or later it will in any event.

I help my team by providing training in my FireTalk ezine and
via our own MyLISTmaker support forum. We have unique
tools for fast growth and members of our QuickTell Advanced
autoresponder service even have effective ads and beautiful
color autoresponders which provide a continuous flow of
information to interested prospects.

In the next 2 weeks the owners will be launching a daily
consumable paying residual income throughout all 10 levels
of your 3 x 10 matrix. This is exceptional because the fee to
join is a one-time purchase however the consumable they are
adding will mean that your list will be providing a consistent
income stream.

Since joining on the 1st of this month, I now have over 1600
people in my list which is nothing massive, but when I consider
how long it took me to get to that amount of subscribers to
my ezine I am utterly amazed!

Incidentally, some people have questioned the quality of the
list members and one person even suggested that they were
just harvested names and addresses so I would like to address
those 2 points if I may.

First of all, everyone pays AUD $150 to get on the list which
means no way are they harvested and at that price you could
not be more opt-in if you tried.

The value of the list is questioned because the leads are not
targeted. This is indeed true however what they are conveniently
ignoring is the power of numbers. If you mail to 10,000+ names
you are going to get a response. It may only be a handful but
it will pay off. Try looking at the costs for mailing to untargeted
lists and figure whether the one time fee of US $89 is worth it.
I cite Links2U Gold membership at US $100 for 3 months only
as a prime example. I mail out to 30,000 untargeted names
with their service and end up with anything from 10 to 50+
sales but I make enough money from those sales to recoup my
$100 and bank a tidy sum. Hence I continue to purchase my
Links2U membership every quarter.

It is said that if you throw enough mud against the wall some
will stick, and that is the way you have to see this list.

Purists believe that people will sign up using self-expiring mail
addresses or free web based addresses that excludes the need
to read incoming mail. This is untrue because if the company
cannot contact the list member they stop payment and remove
the offender from the list. They even send out mails requiring a
response and if no response is received then the member is
deemed to have abused the system. Consequently he loses
his commissions and his membership is terminated.

The system has been built to work. Cheat it and pay the price.
It's a nice system but as with anything containing an MLM
comp plan, it requires effort to make it bring home the bacon.

Regards,
Adrian Elman

RE:   comments from Joan about Pro Money Mail.  I have to
disagree with her.
>From my personal point of view,  I have had great success with
it, both as a free member and now as a paid member.

Like any opt-in group, I use an alternate address where I can
browse through the headlines later in the day (which I do) and not
fill up my personal address.
I am a member of 4 groups and this is what works for me.

As far as the FFA issue, that's what it's called....so I don't
know where or why she received a message asking for $30.
I've used it everyday and never received a message asking me
to pay ever.

The front page of Money mail explains the free membership and
paid memberships.  I'm sorry if she found this misleading, but I for
one like it!
As a paid member, I have already made enough commissions to pay
my membership and I do use it everyday.  It saves me time from
downloading and uploading and saving and sending, etc., etc.
Just type your message and click!

The other comment I wanted to make is about the entire umbrella
of the Business Opportunity Alliance.   They are in constant contact
with all members keeping them updated about their projects (Pro
Money Mail and Brightstar).
They do not hide anything - they have always been upfront in
their message updates with respect to what was happening when
they launched, problems encountered, problems corrected, what to
expect.  The other impressive thing about this company....they answer
your messages personally!   No "canned"
autoresponder reply is sent....they take the time to write back.

I, for one, am very excited about their Brightstar program.
This is a real chance to help kids and be rewarded for your efforts
as well. If you ever check out one good opportunity, take the time to
look at this one.

I apologize if this was a little longer than expected, but I had
to speak out about something I felt was worthwhile.
Not every program is for everybody so it's important that both opinions
be viewed.

Thanks for the space & time,
Nancy Ball

Subject:Low Cost Advertising

I was recently asked where I was placing my advertising to get the results I am
seeing.  While I use many free or low cost resources, I realized that where I
was advertising was the less important question.  Bottom line is regardless of
how large or how small your ad budget is, it is a waste of money if the ad and
headline are not very good.  Using the "canned" ads provided by your business
opportunity (SFI for instance) do not pull very well for the average distributor
because everyone is using the same ads.  Of course, the advertising does well
for the company itself.  My recommendation before anyone spends alot of time
or money placing their ads is to read and learn about writing good ads.
Lots of good stuff out there.

Subject: Is online advertising a form of traditional media?

Is online advertising a form of traditional media?  And if it is, why don't
professors at college in business introduce it or even cover it?  My college
professors in any area of business from economics to marketing were
generally all over 50 years of age.  In fact, most professors in the
business field in any way are older and have been there for a long time.
They don't have as much opportunity cost to becoming a professor as an
engineering major would have coming out of college and becoming a teacher.
So they generally tend to swarm to teaching and stay for life.  Thus, I'm
willing to bet money the majority of profs are going to be pretty stubborn
about introducing online advertising as a traditional medium.  But I will go
so far as to say that I, along with many others here, will say online ads
sure are a traditional form of advertising "now-a-days".  Just go to any
search engine on the internet and punch in the word "ad" and you'll get a
never ending list.  That goes to show something.  What does anyone have to
say about this subject?

Subject:http://www.4webprofit.com/

Hi all,
I just put up a new site and would like some input.

www.4webprofit.com

I have not done anything to promote this site yet except add
a banner exchange because I still have a few things I want to
add or change before I launch. I plan to ad more items to the
free downloads page etc.

Meanwhile, any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
I hope this site will be both informative and profitable.

Thanks,
Oliver

Dear Adlanders,
First of all, I want to say that since I first joined
(almost a year ago), I have gained a WEALTH of
knowledge from all your hints, tips, observations, and
admonitions.  THANKS TO EVERYONE for taking the time
out of your busy schedules to contribute.

Being relatively new to the internet (just over a year
now), I would greatly appreciate a review of my site
and welcome hearing from anyone as to suggestions,
etc.

I have been getting a substantial number of requests
from others for me to construct duplicate sites for
them based on my own (with their contact info, etc.).

These sites have been generating a significant number
of traffic / sales / sign-ups, etc., but I am sure
there are many ways which I could improve in the
construction of these sites so that I could provide an
even better service to everyone.

Your feedback, suggestions and comments are most
graciously appreciated.

Keep up the FABULOUS job you folks are doing!
Wishing you a year filled with happiness, health,
peacefulness & prosperity,

P.S.  I do not have any working knowledge of html so I
had to rely upon the services offered by bizland.com
and have been very impressed with them to this point
(especially after myfreeoffice.com went out of
business and took my 16 sites with them...)

=====================Joke of the Day   (1)===============

A man was driving to work when a truck ran a stop sign, hit
his car broadside, and knocked him cold. Passers-by pulled
him from the wreck and revived him. He began a terrific
struggle and had to be tranquilized by the medics. Later, when
he was calm, they asked him why he struggled so.

He said, "I remember the impact, then nothing. I woke up on a
concrete slab in front of a huge, flashing 'Shell' sign. And
somebody was standing in front of the 'S'!"
