================== Word from publisher ====================

Greetings All

Welcome  180 new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

                                ----===(*)===-----

I'm adding another service to Adlandpro which will be Opt-in
mailing lists. In today's digest there is a discussion about Opt-in
lists and I noticed that there is some confusion about it. Opt-in mailing
lists are  lists, where subscribers agreed to receive messages
within certain area but they are usually not allowed to post to
those lists. Only  people who paid for usage of this lists,
can send messages. Usually this is quite costly and from
what I know not very effective.

This is not kind of Op-In mailing list I want to build.
I'm  planning two-level payment structure for subscribers.
First (like get paid for reading email programs are doing)
would  be small amounts for each email  received.
I would use this only as incentive to join the list. I realize
that this is not very effective approach from the prospective
of advertisers  of such lists, as subscriber is just interested in the
small fee he/she receives but never reads  the email.

The second payment level would be reward for actually
doing something based on the information in the email.

e.g. answer some questions about the advertised service
or finding certain area on the site where this visitor could
record  his/her reference number. This kind of approach
would guaranty to advertisers that their site was viewed
and  visitor was exposed to their service.

Now my question is this.
I'm sure that certain variation of this kind of services  already exists.
Does anybody has any experiences with this kind of
the approach. Both from the subscriber and advertiser
prospective. Please send it to bogdan@softfornet.com.

=================Been Burned Lately? Well, Join the Crowd.=====================
From:Jacqueline Braun

Hi,

This is Going to Be a bit Negative But I hope Informative.
I still consider My self to be a newbie to all this Internet Stuff. And this
is My first Letter.  But I feel it is necessary to Voice What has happened to
Me in the Over two Years I have Been Working on the Internet.
I Built two Web sites. Not Having the HTML knowledge that I would have liked
to Have Had nor the Money For A Pro to do it for Me, I got Free Pages Both
Promised to Pay Me for Sending Others to get their Free Pages. You Probably
Know Which Ones.
Both Went out of Business and My Web Page Efforts went with them.
And so did My Referral Money. Plus the Time Spent Building The Web Sites.
Plus My Good Name to those who also got a page from my efforts.

I joined a Club Paid My $60.00 for a year. And they Folded two weeks Later.

I will not again Join anything Where they Do not Give You a Business address
And Phone Contact. Email Address for Support, Phone Support.
And I have then Verified that this is not an Apartment instead of a Suite.
That all of the Information is Verifiable.

Not the Affiliates Or Referrers Info. But the Company.

Don't Make My Mistakes!
Build Your Efforts With the Confidence that There are People who care and are
Legitimate about Their Business and Yours.
This will Help You avoid the Scams.
No Information = Red Light.
What are they trying to Hide?

Be Smarter Than this old Gal.
If You are An Affiliate. Make sure Your Efforts Will be Rewarded.
Keep in Mind That when you refer others you are forming a bond of trust.
And Putting Your Good Name on the Line.

So Make Sure That The Company You are Promoting is also Trustworthy. And the
People behind the Site are Real.
And Have Put their good name on the line Too!

To Keep Track of Those You have Referred Simply ask them to Let You Know when
they have Signed up. Or have them send you the information that is needed by
your Co. and sign them up yourself. Keep your own records of These People
then you have no need to Question if you are Receiving your Fair Share from
your referrals. Plus You Have the Needed Information to back you up if there
is a dispute.

This can be done from your Web Page. If you Send them to Your Free Company
Page. IE: XXXXXbiz.com?i234 Then you Just lost control.

One Last Suggestion. Guard your Main Email address.

Get One For Ezines where you can Get There info. separately.
One for Opt in Mailings.
One for Each Promo you are running.
One for FFA submissions.
Keep a list for these and use them exclusively for your 1 need.
Or You will end up Like me with 855 unread emails and spending hours deleting
And sorting.
I sincerely hope this will assist those of you who are new to any marketing
efforts
you are now, or in the future going to promote.

Sincerely A wiser Grandma,

=================Does The Internet Cause Blindness?=====================
From:Ray

Hi! Bogdan,

I thank you for providing this service so we can get together
and share our experiences. I have been reading your articles
for several months. Even had a little success story published.

In every issue my heart goes out to those who post stories
about being scammed, ripped off, and robbed of their dreams.
So many times I wish this were a live talk group. I could just
grip the mic and SHOUT, "Folks stay away from there." Don't
you see the danger?" Which brings us to the question.

Does the Internet cause blindness?

I say yes, but my partner says no it is Greed that is causing
the blindness. Course he did not want to call it blindness either.
You can guess at some of the words I had to talk him out of using.

What ever it is called something is causing thousands of people
to wonder blindly from one program to another. Always being lead
to believe watching ads and listening to the radio is going to make
them rich. Or even worse being lead to believe they have a downline
of thousands and growing everyday. ?really? Find the phone number
of two of them. Call them everyday for a full month. Help them. You
are their upline sponsor. You should be required to help. Multiply that
by all those thousands in your promised downline. Tell me you want
thousands in your downline.

Please folks, Let's stop this madness and get back to marketing. Follow
the three steps To Earning Your Living Online. It is so simple. So truthful.
So rewarding.

Thanks for your time.  Ray

Hello Vishal,

If you think that Host4Profit is unbeatable, what would you pay for:

- Hosting of your site
- Submit URLs
- Ranking Reports
- Pay per Click research and mass-bidding
- Click Analysis
- Domain Name
- Catchall e-mail address
- Keyword-topic Brainstorm & Research Manager

 and most importantly...
- the fact that you can get these all tied together into a clear, clean system
that works, and that eliminates the need to know HTML, all the tech issues,
search engine mastery, etc?

You would pay almost the same price for 1 year of Site Build It!

Site Build It! is the complete, all-in-one traffic-building system. It builds
income by giving you all the software, tools and techniques that you need to
build targeted traffic... all tied together into a terrific, time-saving,

I am very happy with WestHost.com --it costs $8.95 a month for 25 MB, and the
service is excellent.  I use their text editor to maintain my site, works
great.  They have gone out of their way to help me get set up.  If your site
gets larger, they have upgrades which are just a little more (like a couple
of dollars more a month), but my site has about 40 pages and is getting
bigger every day, and I am doing just fine.

Subject:Viav Rebates

Hi,

I'd like to record a reply to Penny Osbourne in Adland Digest #226,
who commented on VivaRebates.

When it was first formed as VISA Rebates, the idea was to create the
world's largest community of Visa Card users. It was thought that they
could just go ahead and advertise them, and work out deals with Visa
later. This, of course, was wrong. When Viva Associates realised this,
they not only changed the name to stay on the right side of the law,
but they also approached Visa, who advised them. Visa are still their
largest supporter and supplier, but so many other banks have asked to
come on board, because of its success, that they were told they could
no longer advertise the Visa name alone. If YOU supplied a card, you
wouldn't agree to them advertising someone else's card instead of yours,
would you? Viva Associates are still in the process of working out the
deals with the banks and other financial institutions, and they make
that very clear continually. They also make it monotonously clear that
no deal has yet been worked out, and that no cards have actually been
issued to anyone yet. They have repeated many times that until the deals have
been worked out with the banks, and the legal side of things sorted
out also, they cannot issue cards or pay commissions for work already
done. Isn't it funny how some people choose not to read these comments
when it suits them? They completely ignore them, as if they never
existed, just to jump on the bandwagon and say their piece in print.
Viva, and many other companies, would get along a lot better if they were
left to get on with it, instead of having to face all the banter
and criticism of numerous e-mails and phone calls from negative people.
This is the type of thing that spreads ill-feeling for any business
and sometimes prevents them ever getting off the ground at all. Give
them a proper chance, and then if they don't carry out their promises.
call them any name you want to. But one thing puzzles me - if no-one
ever pays a penny, how can they be conning us?  And the interest rates
Penny talks about - we are told, again clearly, that the country's APR
does apply only if you use your card and fail to pay it off in any
month (plus a 25-day grace period), or if you are in debit at the year end.
Something else that was ignored.

I suggest that those who wish to 'have a go' at Viva, go into the Web
site and read it properly, and FULLY, before doing so. How can I be so
adamant about them - because before we registered, we had it checked
out fully by an Internet Marketing Board member who went to the USA
solely to check. He was ecstatic on his return, and said they were well
ahead of their time and were going places. These people are usually so
critical, but were highly delighted with Viva. So please, give them a
real chance, some room to navigate, and get the deals worked out.

Regards,
Neil R. Kemp. (UK)

Subject:Opt-in email lists

I am writing in regards to Tom Falco's comments about opt in email lists.  I
wonder if I misunderstand what this term means.  I subscribe to maybe a dozen
opt in lists that I send ads to everyday.  I agree when I sign up to receive ads
from other people who are also subscribed.  Yes I do this voluntarily.  It
doesn't seem fair if I want to advertise to not look at others advertisements.
I
send ads out everyday and I have made money through these lists.  I'm not
talking about egroups types of lists though, I got sick and tired of the way
places like egroups were setting posting limits and my ads were bouncing back to
me.  I'm talking about lists like Good As Gold, the Jazz list and others.  I've
only been accused of spam once, and that was because I messed up my disclaimer
before sending out the ad.  The disclaimers are a pain, but necessary in today's
market.

Ezine ads work good also and I've made money using these.  But I'd have to say
that most of my money has been made using these opt in lists.  So Tom, are you
talking about something beside these types of lists?

I whole heartedly agree with Tom's comments, although I missed Rina's post.
I would like to add my thoughts as a relative newbie to MLM.  When I first began
to join MLM's I had NO IDEA of how to get a 'referral'.  I read the posts about
'safe' opt-in list and thought 'this sounds ok'.  so I joined a few and got lots
of unrequested mail.  I then obtained a FREE email address with an autoresponder
and arranged for ALL  the opt-in mail to go to this address.  I then set the
options to automatically delete these mails after my auto-response was sent out.
Included in the auto-response was an invitation to email me (at another address)
if the person concerned had any further queries.  From this I have received a
few genuine leads and made some friends   along the way;.  Most of the mail is
just autoresponder talking to autoresponder but as it is automatically deleted
it doesn't matter.

The moral of the story : even junk mail has it's uses, you just have to look
harder to find it!!

Joan's comments about Ad Placing are right on the money.  There is nothing
'fishy' about Ad Placing.  I am making money from this program and have
recovered my fee to join within a month.  It is work.  You need to be out there
everyday placing ads.  And a lot of ads are clicked on without getting a
'response' (someone filling out the form).  But really could we expect to make
money so easily that we didn't have to work at it?  I think not.  The sites that
advertise that you can make money without doing anything at all are surely a
scam, and something I'd rather stay away from.

And I looked at Joan's site.  She has put together a really good website that
thoroughly explains Ad Placing.

===========C o n t i n u i n g D i s c u s s i o n (5.1)=============
From:Mutinda Kisio
Subject:SFI

Following my write up in issue #228, my powerline leader in SFI who is very
active and for whom I am really grateful had this to say:
.............................
Dear Mutinda,

Thank you for your recent e-mail. I will try to explain the differences
between the "old", and "new"
compensation plan on my example.

Since July 2000 I was earning every month commission ranging from $1,250 -
$1,950.
But large part of those amounts, consist of "$25.00" one time "front end
bonuses".
Therefore this was relatively easy to earn quick front end bonus  $25 x
number of new members, but little harder to build up sizable residual
income, and after all that what we all are looking for.

Since introduction of the new compensation plan my commission jumped
significantly (close to $3K) and this is big difference, specially
practically all those money are related to
residual income, not one time bonuses.

Now if we are looking into the income of those that just started. Under the
"old" compensation plan,
in many cases members where eligible for commission $3 x up to 6 = up to
$18.
But if some one was in powerline with little activities he/she will receive
not much, simply because the upgrade ratio was low.

In the new system every member will receive minimum $9, but if you will
refer only two members your commission will be slightly over the cost of
membership, everything after is a very fast growing residual income.

Some one my argue that $9 is less that $18 that they could earn with
practically no effort, yes this is correct. But no one with serious plans to
build this business will complain about this. Realistically looking, this
basic commission is designed more to motivate new members, not to
provide serious income. We are not spending our effort in building this
business to earn $9, or $18, we are building this business to
earn some thousands of dollars, I believe this are every one goals.

Thanks to this new compensation plan every one with honest intention to
build this business can achieve those goals relatively fast, and this is the
important point of this plan.

I hope this explanation helps.

On this occasion please accept my congratulation for finding successful ways
to promote your business, keep-up with good job and I have no doubt that
soon your commission cheque will be growing with the size of your business.

Should you require any further information's regarding SFI , please don't
hesitate to contact myself at any time.

Hello To Mutinda Kisio:
I also share your concerns re: SFI. I became a member on 2/6/01 because
of all the notices I was getting about a huge powerlne that is developing under
me as an affiliate and I began to market aggressively and soon found other SFI
ads under mine in places like China and "FREE Internet Income Course"
banners all over adland pro's homepage. Guess I needed reassurance too
and e-mailed concerns to my team leader regarding 800,000 well-meaning
people saying similar messages in cyberland? Is this saturation or really
good news for building moneymaking downline? I got a caustic reply
from my team leader (he was probably having a bad day-that's ok). So far,
best part of my cyber adventures have been this discussion group.
Getting my BEST ideas from online buddies. And per Rikie's suggestion to
Miccy, I also joined Affiliate wildfire program to extend my powerline in
SFI. I am in holding pattern with SFI for now.

My response is to Mutinda Kisio's comments about the decline in the commissions.
whilst this may seem to be the case, I can only say "be patient".   SFI has
never purported to be a 'get rich quick' scheme.   If you have as large a
downline as you say, you should be earning additional income from members below
you through the "powerpoints" scheme.  This applies no matter who signed up the
member originally and to infinite levels within your powerline.    You are on
the right track if you are addressing your concerns to your team leader though,
he/she should be dealing with all these type of worries.  If you wish, you may

I already posted my opinion about SFI, received a lot of e-mails of the members

I read Ren's post about it, and I realised I am not alone. Recruiting just for
the sake of recruiting. Someone must buy something in order to make some money.
And the 29$ I spent brought me 9$ after three months. I am thrilled! And they
keep repeating to me that I have hundreds of persons that became members in
my downline! So what? What does this information mean?
I am not trying to be just negative here. But it goes this way: join us for
free, and you can earn big money! After you join, they start sending you
messages: see how many people in your downline are upgrading to members! OK, I
see. What now? Where is the  money activity?
Well, you know, you'll make the money if you pay $29. OK I pay $29. What's next?
Well, you have to....
This is not right. It misleads people. Too many hidden things.
I hope you got me right. Thank you for your time and patience.

I have been send comment on SFI regarding comment sent by Seqat. He has been
misleading since issue #227 and again #229 and still Adland Digest want to
publish it.

I don't want to make comment on how compensation derive as you can read it
from SFI page.

However SFI new compensation plan (2001 earning) is not up to expected.
Eventhough its undeniable the upgrade has been increase but bear in mind the
affiliate sign up still the same. Those upgrade are mostly from old sign up
(2000 sign up). I also notice that opt-out also increasing. I been losing
members faster than upgrade.

The point is new compensation plan only benefit most those been long enough
with SFI with big downline. Those with small down line will not make it as
opt-out is faster than upgrade. Only small percentage of SFI'er will survive
and yet if their downline decide to opt-out they also get the hit as the
receive powerpoints form every members in his/her powerline eventhough
he/she never ever want to know or feed that off shoot powerline with his/her
referrals.

This is networking. There will be a chain of reaction when people don't see
why they should spend $29.95 to get $9. Remember vast majority of SFI
members get $9. Only few make $'000.00

Try to find some ezines that accept advertising for FREE or better still start

marketing is the only way to get your message across.
We all know what happens when we are exposed to a virus (for example the common

electronic equivalent of "Word-of-Mouth"  =  EMAIL!!
1st, Join an opt-in list or start your own .  This gives you a base to email to
if you do not have many contacts.
2nd, Offer something, even if it is just your program, but make the reader want
to know more so they will contact you to ask the details.  This way you cannot
be accused of SPAM 3rd, KEEP IN TOUCH with everyone on a personal
level until you have so  many contacts you have to go to autoresponding.
By this stage you will be earning so much, you will have your downlines building

From:John A. Olson
Subject:SkyBiz

Hello,

First things first, I always look forward to the Adland Digest. And read it
through. You have some very good pieces in every issue.

But I feel I must respond to Robin Forbes aka The Pencildude's assessment of
SkyBiz. I have been a member of SKYBIZ for some time and I can tell you this
is not a fly by night operation.

SKYBIZ has been in business since Dec. of 1998.

SKYBIZ as of November 1, 2000, has paid out over $100 Million in commissions.

To date, there are over 43 millionaires made with SKYBIZ.

Over 12,000 - 15,000 commission checks paid out weekly.

SKYBIZ has always delivered their product.

SKYBIZ pays out currently over $4 million in commissions weekly!

The average associate in SKYBIZ earns about $220 per week after 5 moths in
the business.

That's 8 to 9 Hundred US dollars a month.

I have found the Products to be VERY easy to use and when I build a site,
there is nothing on it, that I don't personally put there. No banners, no pop
ups, nothing that I don't want there. There are few to no restrictions as to
what I can put on my site or sites. I can use them to market SkyBiz or any
other MLM Opportunity or other business, family, hobby or anything else that
I care to.

Yes, some SkyBiz associates have come under investigation. Every company of
similar size and growth will have some associates go outside the rules. And
any Company with as many members as SkyBiz will have some who are
dissatisfied or feel they were mislead. SkyBiz is in over 200 countries and
growing everyday. New Web builder programs are in beta testing right now and
maybe released to every associate by the time this Digest comes out again.

The on-line education is being upgraded to cover more information and in
multiple languages. New products and services will be coming on in the next
few months that will make SkyBiz even more desirable to be involved with.

As far as WWSN is concerned, I put no stock in anything they have to say and
take anything they say with a truck load of salt. They seem to live in their
own little World and if you and your company doesn't fit in that world, you
must be a scam artist and your company is out to fleece everyone. Sorry, but
I don't buy it, and I only read their site, for a good laugh.

I don't care if someone signs up with SkyBiz or not, that's up to them, but I
cannot sit by and let the name of a perfectly good company be spat upon. I
have not made much money as yet and that's my fault, but the support I get
from all of my upline is there and very real.

Join SkyBiz or don't. But like any other business that has been talked about
in this Digest, you must work at it, stay with it, and follow the example of
those who have made the jump from trying to doing. Nothing is for certain,
but with SkyBiz you have a proven system, and the support to back it up.

Okay, fire away.

John A. Olson

add on to letter from Robin, AKA the pencil dude.

I wish I had your knowledge over a year ago. I am one of those people that
signed up for not just one web package....but 3. I'm not embarrassed by any
means, as they had a very hardsell, direct, phone you every second day approach
that led me to believe that I would have the very best in upline support, and
spillover. I never did sign up anybody, because 2 weeks after they got my money,
the RCPM announced that they were pressing charges against the heavyhitters in
Canada, and I could never bring myself to suck anyone else in. I still use their
webhost service( after all...I did pay for it), however it is constantly plagued
by bugs.As for upline support....they no longer return my calls or emails. Guess
they are not so helpful once they have your money. My advice to all that have
been approached, is to run far far away from this as possible. There are much
better webhosts for less money available.
                   Al Jones,
PS...you can never get tech support to answer back either.Via phone or email.

Subject:Is online advertising a form of traditional media?

Brady,

The online world is too new to be a part of traditional media. But if it is
incorporated into the classroom, it will probably be treated like traditional
advertising... award winning campaigns rather than "salesmanship" in print,
on TV, and now online. Ads can be clever. They can win awards. They can
"brand" an item. But the ones that matter are the ones that can be tracked to
show whether or not they are making the client any money. In other words
direct response marketing. How does this translate online? A lot of big
dotcoms that used traditional advertising methods and just threw money out
there under the direction of an ad agency went under. Little guys using
scientific principles and tracking their results (you can't track results by
buying airtime on the Superbowl) are building businesses online. Lets hope
that tradition-bound professors of advertising not bring their teaching to
the net. Get a copy of Claude Hopkins' "Scientific Advertising". It's public
domain and everyone is giving it away as an ebook online. Then compare what
he said to what you're learning in school. Offer it to an advertising
professor and ask him what he thinks. A lot of advertising folks won't like
it. Why? Because they know that if they have to prove themselves with
results, they are in trouble!

Dear Bogdan and all Adlanders:
I was wondering if anyone has heard of the Debt Payment Club.  I am not
a member but am thinking of joining.  The premise is that you pay a certain
fee based on the amount of debt you want help with.  They have a good sales
pitch and the program sounds great, but I've been burned on these programs
and want to know if anyone out in AdLand knows anything about this group.
Thanks for such a great Ezine I read it top to bottom every issue.
Sincerely,

Subject:Promoting ACAD Newsletter

Hi Bogdan,

The beginning of this year I started ACAD Newsletter.
It's a monthly newsletter for AutoCAD users, technical
students, and AutoLISP programmers.

They who want to learn more about AutoCAD and AutoLISP.
In the ACAD Newsletter they find a lot of information
about AutoCAD and also AutoLISP programs.

I want to promote the newsletter. But how do I do that?
I want to do it for free. What ways are there to
promote a newsletter?

I subscribed to a lot of lists. There you can post a
message or advertisement every week. I also went to a
couple of FREE ADVERTISING sites.

But there is more. I'm sure. I heard about FFA pages
and even affiliate programs where you can advertise.
Can anybody give me more information?

Aren't there some good free courses about advertising a
newsletter around? I would like to get them. I need
subscribers.

I heard about ad swaps. That's a good idea. But I only
have a small newsletter right now. Are bigger
newsletters interested in me?

Then there is submitting articles. I have got a lot of
articles I can submit. But where can you submit these
articles?

Can you submit a newsletter to search engines? How is
that done?  I heard about newsletter directories. Where
can I find them?

Subject:Marketing an ebook Children's Novel

Dear Adland,

I have recently had my manuscript for a Children's Novel, ages 8
to 12, accepted by Century21 Bookstore.  They pay high royalties (65%) but
do not do any marketing for their authors.  As I am new to the internet
world I would be interested to hear what avenues are available for authors
to promote their books being sold on their publisher's web site.  Placing a
classified advertisement with Adland looks quite feasable, but is this the
only avenue to pursue.

Kind Regards,

Warren Thurston

Subject:Participating in Internet business  from Africa

Hi Bogdan,
This is my second attempt at posting. Hope it'll be successful.

I admire M. Mutinda Kisio from Kenya for staking $359. As an affiliate
of SFI, when I found out that not having a credit card, I had to pay a
full year dues to upgrade, I gave up. This was too high risk for me.

Beside the credit card most internet entrepreneur from Africa especially
face problems of slow and costly connections. I pay US$1.00 each hour,
plus $0.50 for the phone. With that, you can't stay on line all the time
and promotion efforts are hampered, in particular using free
classifieds.

Fortunately there are possible solutions with classified submitters. I
personally use one from Becanada that can put your ad on 1500+ sites in
an hour or so. It is not too expensive and a free online demo is
available at http://www.totalsubmit.com/?fkamga@usa.net.
Concerning Ezines, some of them are a succession of ads from top to
bottom, sent thrice a week. Weeding out through that jungle is not an
easy task.

I'd like to hear from other highlanders facing similar difficulties.

Have a good day.

=====================Site Review Response  (1)===============
From:Marilou
Subject:http://www.bcomms.com

Hi Alan,

I looked at your page  (one page does not a web site make - in my opinion)

As the owner of 8 websites which make an excellent income with zero expenditure
on promotion, I have formed some strong opinions over 2 years so forgive me if I
sound opinionated...

A few comments:

1.  I hate frames, search engine spiders hate frames.

2. You have no meta tags so 'directory editors' will hate you for not at least
having a description tag.  Spiders will ignore you 'cause you have no keywords
tag.

3.  "Million Link Exchange" sounds like Free For All links which have pretty
well been shown to be useless...

4.  "News Headlines"  is miss-leading  (and I click off any site that miss-leads
me ... I hate wasting time...) The "headlines" are only about motor racing, for
which you have two other links anyway.

5.  "Home Page" is not your home page?  "Contact Us" is also someone else?

6.  Surfers would be better served to go right to groupn.com which is where your
links all go anyway.

7.  Your "Information Oasis" provides about 5 ads and 3 links to another
website.  I would hate to come upon this "Oasis" after crawling 1,000 miles
through the desert...

8. In my view a website will only succeed if it has a lot of original and useful
content, excellent and clear navigation and some compelling reasons for surfers
to return.

Sorry Alan... There are many websites out there with all the information you
need to design a web site and promote it.  Perhaps you need to do a lot of
serious reading.  Best Wishes, Marilou

=====================Joke of the Day   (1)===============

Barbara Walters had done a story on gender roles in Kuwait
several years before the Gulf War, and she noted then that
women customarily walked about 10 feet behind their
husbands.

She returned to Kuwait recently and observed that the men
now walked several yards behind their wives.

Ms. Walters approached one of the women for an explanation.
"This is marvellous," she said. "What enabled women here to
achieve this reversal of roles?"

The Kuwaiti woman replied, "Land mines."
