Hello Ted,

Banners work for those who know where to put them.
Banners are just form of advertising and nobody likes
advertising in any form.

Specialists are generalizing and this might be true for
site of large traffic where demographics of visitors
is very broad. It is hard then to get good results
as your potential customer  is  very rarely seeing
your banner. But this will be true for any form
of advertising with narrow target.

You should advertise on sites which have narrow
focus and chances that potential customer will
see your banner is  large.

These kind of sites are sites of your competition.

In short,  no matter what form of advertising you
are using you need to target it.

To be able to find out where is your target audience,
you need to test it.

We just developed free utility to track your promotions.
You will get statistics on broad number of variables.
referrer, browser type, ip address, operating system and so on.
To get access to this utility  go here.

I signed up with two bannerexchanges.  One is at
http://mysiteinc.com/tfn/bgm.html and the other at
http://mysiteinc.com/tfn/bco.html.  Both give me 1-1 exchange plus bgm
gives me 10% of any referals impressions and bco gives me cash for
clicks on banners on my pages.  They are both great to work with and
offer a free teleseminar on marketing, etc.  Neither gives you a ton of
visits, but it took only a few minutes to put the code on the pages and
now it operates on auto pilot.  I get visitors without doing anything.
Personally, I think it is well worth the effort.

Subject:Banner Advertising

Ref the request from Ted Kusie "I'd like to get some advice to help me
decide whether or not to use banners in my promotion."

Ted Kusie asks the question everyone want's to know "Is my promotion
effective?".

This applies whether it is banner advertising, small ads, newsletters or
whatever. It is essential to understanding the most effective form of
promotion for you.

A means of tracking your promotions so that you know exactly which banner or
ad sends people to your site is needed.

There are several ways to do this, depending on your budget.

A simple way is to set up each ad in the form of an Affiliate link. For
example, instead of having your banner link just to point to your site as
in:  www.fast-track2000.com/ft2kcommon/formorder1.htm

you would put
www.fast-track2000.com/ft2kcommon/formorder1.htm?camefrom=100&backto=doc
ument.url

on the page where the link sends you would extract the identifier of the
particular banner (in this case a number = 100) with a bit of code. I can
send the code if you would like to see it. e mail to
alan@fast-track2000.com.

Another way is to use cgi scripts and I can send you one of these too. Just
send an e mail to alan@fast-track2000.com

If this is too simple, you could try a simple affiliate programme, such as
http://www.simpleaffiliate.com/index.cgi?1428

If you want a full blow commercial banner tracking system then I would
recommend you take a look at
http://www.marketingtips.com/assoctrac/t.x/44554

I hope the above tips will help you find a tracking method to find which ads
are working for you.

If anyone has other tips, I would be pleased to hear them.
alan@fast-track2000.com

If you would like more information then please visit www.fast-track2000.com

Apart from tracking your ads, I am learning that banners are more useful in
building a brand, than in getting people to your site.

You could try banners out for free, to see if that are working for you. Here
is one place you join a banner exchange system:
http://www.trafficcenter.com/associates.cfm?id=albr-11084532

I would be pleased to hear from anyone on the above subjects.

Hi, Bogdan, and everyone:

says, hit that ol' scroll on the side, and "roll on"!

I don't like it when you can't say what you
want to!  The world becomes a much unfriendlier
place.

I'm a newbie, but I want to say what I want to,
and I want to read what I want to!  Don't insult
my intelligence by trying to tell me I can't differentiate

That's the fun of the internet!  The whole purpose!
Read what you want, and scroll over the rest.

Subject:Site Reviews

This is in regards to Kenny Konechne's comments:

>"The site reviews I'm getting tired of because it's always the same people
>pretty much doing the reviews. I think you ought to just instruct people that
>want site reviews to send them directly to the people who are doing all the
>reviews. Some of the people doing the reviews strike me as people that are
>kinda full of themselves. Who are they, What are their credentials?"

Mr. Konechne, not all reviewers are the same people.  I myself have not reviewed
a site before, but I did go to yours and was astonished by what I found.  My
credentials:  My site has been online for over 1 year now.  Since that time, I
have over 4,000 page views per day with over 800 unique visitors a day.  I have
done a lot of research into my material and have affiliations with quite a few
major sites with similar topics such as my own.  Your "counter" only shows just
over 460 visitors to your site.  Are these in just one day?  Are these all
unique visitors or are some of them your own visits?  460 visitors in 6 months
is not all that much for a site that you claim is admired and liked.

>"I had my site reviewed and got told basically to redo it, but yet have
>received many emails from people that admired and liked my site."

How many emails did you receive?  I get over a dozen a day telling me how
informative my site is and how much it has helped them.  Do you get that type of
response?

>"Who do I listen to? Many ordinary people or one person who thinks he is
>somebody, But has no credentials posted."

So a person has to have "credentials" in order to review your site?  But you
just said that many people admired your site.  Obviously you can't take
criticism so why bother submitting your site for review at all?

>"Well I went with the majority. I now am getting requests to add links to my
>site."

So where is your traffic coming from?  460 visitors is not that much if you're
getting requests for link exchanges.

I went to your site, and so did my husband who has over 2 years experience in
maintaining successful web sites.  I'm sure if you ask him he'll be happy to
tell you how much traffic he's getting and how he's managed to accomplish this.
We both visited your site and we both agreed that it should be redone.  You have
very little information to draw your traffic back to your site, which is an
important issue in maintaining a good stream of traffic.  You have no original
content at all.  What you have is a link with links on it that actually take you
away from your site.  Actually, EVERY link takes you away from your site!  I
clicked on photos and guess what I saw?  NOTHING!  It says "The page you
requested is not available".  Pretty sad.  Everytime I go back to your front
page my download software pops up asking me if I want to download your tracker.
Very, very annoying.  And pretty well all of your banners, links, gift ideas,
etc. have absolutely nothing to do with fishing.

If I was looking for fishing information I would be very disappointed and would
feel mislead.  It seems your site is based on affiliate programs and banners,
which I might add, are poorly set up and not uniform at all.  Look at how you've
bunched everything on the bottom of your front page.  And what is with that huge
gap of space at the bottom?

Hey, nice trick with the "secrets".  It seems the only information you are
offering (if it is even your own) makes your visitors have to sign a guestbook
or sign up for your newsletter in order to get it.  Just another way of taking
your traffic away from your site.

Now that I've finished with my two cents, I'm hoping that others who are reading
this will learn what NOT to do with their site.  Make sure that your site is
easy to read, graphics are uniform, get rid of any links that are not working,
and create your own content (not a bunch of content that has nothing to do with
what your site is about) which will have visitors wanting to return for more.

Hi Kenny, I am not offended. I offer opinions and your site needs work! You
have a total of 3 fish pictures on your site and a broken link to more, just
click on:
http://www.thefishermanspond.com/The%20%20Pond%20work%20with/photo.html
and you'll see that the page requested is not available.
This is not a great site, a good site, or even a usable site.
I think that if you ever bought a fishing book and it had the content
(actually lack of) that your web site has, you'd feel ripped off. Especially
if you purchased the book for fishing information and instead were
encouraged to join some internet marketing schemes.
You should be treating your web site the same way. Try getting a weather
panel from http://www.weather.com for starters. Maybe some headlines from
http://www.moreover.com to add some movement to an otherwise "incredibly
painful to view" web site.
These are my opinions, freely given to you.
My credentials?

5 years investigating and promoting different affiliate programs,
successfully!
NO MLM ventures signed up for, promoted or anything else to do with MLM.

site and earn some income along the way.

Subject:Gateway Pages

Hi Skip,

Your master/designer sounds like a total idiot if he tells you
to keep away from gateway pages.

There is no way it will hurt your current placement, unless
you actually bump yourself out of a position.

Our gateway pages have allowed us to have more than one
listing on the first page of many search engines!

Gateway pages have allowed our websites to be listed at
the top of all the major search engines! We have a gateway
page for each product we sell and that is the page that comes
up when people type in the product.

It is actually more efficient for the people searching. They don't
have to go through every page on your site looking for what they
want. It will come up just by clicking the gateway page.

If people want "custom imprinted pens" they will see us as number
one or two at yahoo, google, AOL, etc.

That is because this "gateway page" is geared solely to custom
printed pens.

The same goes for all of our products: post-it notes, cups, frisbees, etc.

If we were to submit our home page, the search engines would see
1000 products. How would it categorize us?

Every successful business uses gateway pages. It makes the
search engines more user friendly and it helps the website owner
immensely in the form of high placement.

Thanks,

From:Robert Lee
Subject:Gateway Pages

The reason "gateway pages" are recommended is to accentuate existing content
on your site by stressing keywords and relevant terms on separate pages,
then submitting these pages to the search engines that they have been
created for.
These pages should have just two links, a link IN from your main page and a
link OUT to the more complete page that has relevant information concerning
the subject discussed.
Creating your "gateway page(s)" begins with knowing the submission rules for
search engines, how they spider and index your pages and what works best for
which search engines.
You CANNOT make "gateway page(s)" that will fulfill the requirements for
higher placement of more than 1 search engine. To be successful at "gateway
page" creation, you need to make one for Google, another for
Excite/Looksmart, another for AltaVista, yet another for MSN Search and so
on, covering the same topic using different layouts, key words and phrasing.
This is time consuming and, without the required background reading and
knowledge of what the search engines index, fruitless.
You also MUST have the relevant content to back up your "gateway page".

The reason "gateway pages" are NOT recommended:
1. Unspecific website content - You cannot sell any affiliate program using
just links, and you cannot create a "gateway page" that will work using a
mass of keywords and irrelevant keyword phrasing.
2. Lack of search engine indexing knowledge - just as you can't read a map
with out knowing the language the map is written in, you cannot create a
"gateway page" without knowing how a search engine will index it and what
the competition is for the keyword(s) you are targeting.

I hope that this helps those of you about to consume time and energy into
"gateway pages" to start off right!

Subject:Per click search engines

A few issues back I wrote about pay per click search engines. Here are the
ones I have success with and then I'll tell you why.
http://www.goto.com/
http://www.kanoodle.com
http://7search.com/
http://www.findwhat.com/
http://www.bay9.com/
http://www.brainfox.com/

As was mentioned in Adland by a couple of people, bid on many terms that
aren't as obvious as a phrase such as "make money." Also, know your search
engine. I submitted literally thousands of search terms to brainfox and the
only hits I received were from their Featured Listings. It didn't matter at
that point what my bid was. I used my money to continue to bid on that page.
Go To may be the most expensive but I get good traffic and sales from it so
it's worth it to me. I can get most of my bids for less than $.08 per click
and the least amount I make per sale is $16.70 every 100 hits. So, my ROI is
at least more than my cost because my average sale is $43.90.

For more on these types of search engines, here is where they review them:

Good luck and good marketing,

use pay per click search engines.  Goto is usually the biggest one that you
hear about.  However with their new price increases, it makes it difficult for
people like me who are really on a tight budget to get listed.  I mean 5 cents
a click is not so bad, but all the good keywords have bids over a dollar a
click!
I would really like some suggestions on what are some good pay per click search
engines that are more affordable.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks in

One of the best ways to begin your new-found adventure into Internet profits
to start with a free web site. If you are ready for your own domain name and

Subject:Posting ads

Hi,  I have a question.  At this point I have an information packet that I want
to promote, but I do not have a web page.  That may come later.  Several of the
ad promotion sites that I have visited want you to put in a URL address. How do
you get around that? Any ideas?

Thanks Cynthia

=====================Site Review Request  (1)===============
From:Rikie
Subject:http://rikiesbiz.go.coolebiz.com/

Good on ya Kenny!

At last someone has taken the bull by the horns and spoken out about the site
reviewers.
I also offered a site to be reviewed and although I fully expected to get some
criticism (as a newbie) I did expect it to be 'constructive'.    To me, the
whole reason of asking for review was to get some assistance in design without
the 'bagging' from the highly experienced.  After all, we all need to start
somewhere.  This is the reason I created my other web page "Newbies Guide to
Online Income" ; just to offer some hints and ideas to NEWBIES not the
experienced, from the point of view of a NEWBIE.  This is also the reason all
the information is offered FREE and the programs/sites mentioned on the page are
ALL FREE to join.

So with that said, please if you are a NEWBIE, take a look at my new page.

To all that provided a site review for the Red River Valley Garden Club.

Thanks very much for your comments.  I appreciated all of them.  Even the
"UGH!" ones.  That is exactly what I thought but wasn't sure what to do.
Now that you have given me some direction and better ideas, I am working on
updates and am gathering more content.  THANKS AGAIN!

=====================Site Review Response  (2)===============

Subject:http://www.netwants.com

Hi Andy its Andy with a site review.

I like your site and your concept.  I am not a technical guy so I have no
comments about source code etc.  When a new visitor comes to your site, You have
to make it clear, obvious and in large type, exactly what you want them to do
and mostly why it is in their best interests to do what you want.

Your front page doesn't answer the question, what's in it for me?  You have to
convince the new visitor of the benefit of placing an ad with you and you have
to do it quickly.  You are basically selling ads.  I know they are free ads, but
you have to sell the people on placing their ad with you.  If you think of your
front page as a sales letter that convinces Sellers to place free ads and Buyers
to search, you will do  fine.

If I understand your business model, it is inventory based.  If you don't have
wanters/buyers, you can't collect ten dollars ( is that US, Canadian or
Australian dollars? You might want to make that clear on your site.) for their
contact information.  Therefore, you need to sell people on placing their ads
and the way to that is to answer the question, What's in it for me?

I am not subtle so instead of the small categories link in your paragraph, I
would have a giant blinking thing, saying We Want To Buy Your Stuff! or
something like that to draw in people with merchandise to sell.  I would have
another large obvious link that said, If You Want It, We Can Get It, to entice
people to place want ads.

On a positive note, your site loads well and I placed a couple of want ads and
that seemed to function nicely.  Your order page for buying the wanters
information seemed nice also.

All I think you need is a better sales letter and a clear communication of the
benefits of using your service.  It is easy to list the features of your site.
It is difficult to describe the benefits of your site from a third party
perspective, but it is worth the effort.

First of all, this is a very nice site, fast loading, well layed out except
for one thing that I think would improve business a little.
Group your categories together instead of having on big page.  An
example would be have a category of parts and then sub categories of airplane
parts, motorcycle parts, and the rest of the parts.  Otherwise I really like
your site.

Domain Name Registration - The Rules Have Changed!
ByA.T.Rendon

© Copyright 2001
All Rights Reserved

Once upon a time, if you wanted to register a domain name,
you could only do it by visiting Network Solutions at:
http://www.networksolutions.com/ and paying them whatever
they asked for, about $35.00 per year.

Then ICANN, http://www.icann.org/, The Internet Corporation
for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) that is the non-
profit corporation that was formed to assume responsibility
for the IP address space allocation, protocol parameter
assignment, domain name system management, and root
server system management functions previously performed
under U.S. Government contract by IANA and other entities,
decided to change the rules.

The initial testing phase of the new competitive Shared Registry
System for the .com, .net, and .org domains quietly began to take
place in April of 1999.

It started with five participants who were the first to implement
the new system for competition in the market for .com, .net, and
.org domain name registration services.

Previously, registration services in the .com, .net, and .org domains
were provided by Network Solutions, Inc. under an exclusive
contract with the United States government.

In the two years since this program began,
things have really changed.

Just this last week,  ICANN reported that two of their registrars,
Tucows, and New York-based Register.com, had recored more
new registrations for Top Level Domains, TLDs, (dot-com, dot-
net and dot-org) than VeriSign's Network Solutions.

This marks the first time ever that VeriSign's Network Solutions
was out-sold by any of the registrars and signals that their past
dominance of domain name registration is certainly fading.

Why?

Because besides others being allowed to make domain name
registrations, these new registrars are also cutting prices.

I just registered a new domain name, http://autopilotebiz.com/
that will not start Pre-Launch until April 2001, but for the
price I used to register a domain name for two years, $70,
I was able to register AUTOPILOTeBIZ.COM for
10 YEARS!

The RULES have most certainly changed.

The Shared Registration System ("SRS"), ICANN's
accredited registrars program, allows people to submit
application to become a registrar along with a non-
refundable $ 1000 filing fee.

After someone is accepted into the program then they
must pay a yearly fee of $ 5000 to maintain their
status as an accredited registrar.

This situation has created a very competitive environment
which can only be beneficial to all of us as the price to
register a domain name has fallen like a rock from a very
tall building.

However, if you plan to register a new domain name using a
virtual unknown registrar, make certain they do indeed have
the legal accreditation from ICANN by visiting the ICANN
web site and viewing their posted list of ALL accredited  vendors:
http://www.icann.org/registrars/accredited-list.html

It will only take you a few moments to make sure you are
dealing with a reputable vendor of domain names.  Those
few moments will make the entire process legal and worry-free.
