In last issue of Adland Digest I posed a question if Digest should be
more frequent with less content.
Majority of the answers were Definiete NO. Keep it the way it is.
See some responses.

SO IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT..!!
Lucky Jack (John Sharon)

---
Please continue the great work, format,
AND size of your digest.

Debbie Paul

---
I already have difficulty processing the numerous business
emails received each day at my "good" email address. More frequent
publishing would add to that difficulty.

Melba Jean Miller
---

Use your own judgment, but don't send it to often.  You don't want people to get
in the habit of deleting the digest.

Andy Sparks

----

I would much rather spend time reading your reasonably sized quality publication
than scrolling through 3 or 4 others of little interest in the same time.

Andrew

-----
I am satisfied with the size of the Digest.  I can take my time and scroll
through, after reading the Contents.

Gene

-----

I guess you could turn out one of these every day, but even
God rested on the seventh day. When do you plan on taking a
break.

Jim Sampley

----

The digest is first class, been reading it for ages

Roger Gregory

----

I am happy to receive one issue per week, with as much good content as you
feel suitable.

Tony Murtagh

---

Bogdan, to answer your request i dont think your news letter is too
large, i print it out and take it with me to read when i get time

Fred Moudy

----
Your digest is great just the way it is.  I am
receiving both issues and think it's great - Don't change a thing

Toni Ceely
----
If it were mine, I'd cut it down in size and run it
more frequently...the repetition value.

Capt Charley

---
I like the digest just the way it is.  I look forward to reading it but would
not want it everyday because if I received it everyday then I would never get
anything done. LOL

Debra Glinsey

----

I like the more frequent with less content idea.  Sometimes the size of the
newsletter is ovewhelming.

Lorraine Innes
-----

Once a week is good.  I wouldn't want it more frequent.

Chad Porter
---

I like it as it is.  I find that I do not get the time to read
newsletters that are published every day

=================The life of a netpreneur=====================
From:AL Jones

Life is not as easy as people think
for the serious netpreneur
There's a lot of work that needs to be done
for success to be ensured.

Success does not come easily
it requires focus of the mind
three hours a day, is what they say
he must face the daily grind.

He starts out with the obvious,
his personal email list.
And when this ends, then he will send
to all his opt in lists.

Next he'll follow up on ezine ads,
and blast the free for all links.
Then he'll clean out his junk mail box,
his eyes now sore and pink.

He'll check a few new sites of interest,
and ask them for a link exchange.
Then he'll check his click thru stats
on his rotating banner exchange.

Next comes the task of listing his site
in the various classifieds.
He'll email a few for a partnership,
but will only get autoreplies.

He checks his search engine ranking,
and finds that it now lags.
Time to spruce the website up,
and tweak the meta tags.

Exhausted, he checks his listing
in numerous directory's.
No time to quit, must resubmit,
only top ten listing will please.

The tough ole world of a netpreneur,
is not one of get rich quick schemes.
He sometimes wonders, what keeps
him chasing his cyber for profit dreams.

He wonders what drives him night after night,
While checking his inbox one last time.
Now he's reminded by one of his emails with
" You've Made A Sale ! " in the subject line.

From:Alan Armitage
Subject:Webhosting

I read with interest various comments and opinions about
hosting. I am a first timer with a real estate agency for Philippine
Property. I tried only bizland.com and hit immediately. I was able
to place my web with http (FP2000) for really fast updates,
get quick assistance, and all for free which I needed until sales start
coming in. But just as things were looking good, they decided to change
the rules by charging a monthly fee. Reason (excuse) was complaints.
You can now have it without banner they said! I am not concerned
about a colorful banner on my site so what?

One thing they will not provide is database cover with
queries which I need as my property list at northluzonprops.bizland.com
grows to more than a few pages. So I am faced with eviction on 28th
March while having to continue to service clients. The only thing they
will continue to give free is a business card page!

For a newcomer like me, it would be enormously helpful if any readers
can tell me if they know a free webhoster who can provide database support
preferably with http upload.

Thanks if you can publish this

===========C o n t i n u i n g D i s c u s s i o n (1.2)=============
From:Edward "Mister Ed" Mayo
Subject:Webhosting

Howdy All,

I step away for a few days, came back and read the last issue or two and
found a couple people defending free hosting services as if they had
stock in the companies.  Well, sorry to those folks for upsetting them,
but I will say that there are exceptions to the rule and I believe that
they may be in that category.

Free hosting is a good way to start out.  In fact I offer free sites for
this purpose as well as to folks that use free hosting that need more
capabilities.  Since Tammy Sechler was saying that she designed over 120
sites, well, I have provided over 6,000 and average about 10-20 new
sites a week during the slow times.  (Tammy, www.webcreations99.com
didn't come up for me on several tries, but I'd like to talk to you).
But that is beside the point.  I don't remember everything I wrote, but
I still maintain that free sites have a startout or low confidence
quality to them. 99% of them are amateurish and will hardly see the light
of day.  I have seen very, very  few acceptable sites on free hosting
systems.  If you are doing well and getting tons of compliments, then I
think it is great and I have no problem with it at all.  But remember, I
was commenting on the other 2 million crappy sites on free systems out
there that are not worth visiting and have nothing but banners, popup
pages, and look like grade school art experiments.

By the way, HTML is a big programming language, but the basics to build
a nice site are easy to pickup.  Can't learn everything about it, but you
can design a very nice site with a few basic commands.  AND HTML is an
independent processing language: in other words, commands don't know
what the other commands are doing ... hence the reason for cookies to
track what's going on with visitors and their preferences, other
processes, etc. ( that was fer Seqkat regarding his defensive post ).
This was not a contradiction, just a misunderstanding due to not
expounding the subject.

So in a nutshell, try a free site or two.  Try to find ones that aren't
going to steal your visitors with banners and popup screens.  Look at
the tools to create the site ... are they slow? (such as the ones at
homestead or whatever they are called).   But also remember that
bandwidth is like gold ... you get what you pay for ...  the more sites
on a server, the slower the system resources will be.  (and load times
will be slower for visitors than for yourself due to browser caching).

Thanks,
Edward "Mister Ed" Mayo

From:Rina Chen
Subject:PAY-PER-CLICK SEARCH ENGINE TIPS

Hi!

In response to Serina's post, I would like to let you know that I wrote an
article for my subscribers 2 to 3 weeks back revealing some search engine tips.
I hope you benefit from this article...

PAY-PER-CLICK SEARCH ENGINE TIPS by Rina Chen

If you are having trouble getting in top ten search engine rankings, try paying
for placement! That's what many netrepeneurs do, besides swapping links and
bartering for paid advertisement spots.

Some pay-per-click search engines now charges a minimum of US$0.05 per bided
keyword, a monthly US$20.00 per month or a combination of these two plus a 500%
increase in the most popularly-searched words. This is partly because they are
placing advertising deals with other partners to drive traffic to the search engine
directories. As a webmaster or a web-owner, you need cheaper alternatives.

Instead of trying to buy the most popular terms which are expensive, pay for
dozens - or even hundreds of keywords for significant traffic and for less
money. Use the not-so-popular or often mis-spelled keywords. For example,
"keyword" can be "key-word".
Try to use plurals instead. For example, instead of using "advertisement", why
not use "advertisements"; and abbreviations like "ads". Use a bit of your
imagination to start receiving web visitors who type in likely and "unlikely"
search words to find your website.

At GoClick < http://ww8.terrashare.com/bigsearch12.html >, you can start bidding
for keywords at US$0.01/keyword and only a US$50.00 deposit is required. You
would only need to top-up your pay-per-click funds account when GoClick sends
you visitors through the keywords you have bided. For your convenience, there are
6 ways to place your deposit. Another pay-per-click search directory is
Click For Pennies <
http://www.plugingo.com/plexor.cfm?ProgramID=519&amp;PageID=7803&amp;Type=0&amp;
ULID=270 >

Want to know where the other pay-per-click search engines are? They're here:-

http://www.colorstamps.com http://www.rocketlinks.com
http://www.findwhat.com http://www.kanoodle.com http://www.simplesearch.com
http://www.searchhound.com

This site < http://www.going2click.com/cgi-bin/clickthru.cgi?id=hitlister > has
a valuable resource that will show you 70 other search engines, portals, and
websites that offer paid search listings just like goto.com but a lot better.

If you need professional help in choosing your keywords, that is a different
story to it but you may want to investigate into such services as well (since I
am talking about search engine placements for keywords in this article), I'll
include the web link below. These professionals claim that they would then
cloak your top-ranking pages so that your competition won't steal your spot.
I would advise that you do some research to make sure that cloaked pages
are spider-friendly and would not jeopardise your monthly search rankings.
Check out one of these professionals' website <
http://www.commission-junction.com/track/track.dll?AID=201346&amp;PID=244550&amp
;URL=http%3A//www.ai-r.com >

I truly believe in spending zero to low-cost website promotion campaigns,
especially if you are starting on a small budget.  Turn to expensive advertising
solutions only when your bank account allows it without burning a hole in your
pocket. And always test your ads! Go slow and you won't get hurt economically
or live to regret a poor investment.

Many ezine publishers allow subscribers chances to win free ads too, or if you
have a website that you can swap ads with other webmasters with websites of the

Also, do not use all capital letters for your ads, most ezine publishers will
just delete those ads with all capital letters.

Subject:Banner advertising is simply not effective.

Although most of the so called experts out there keep telling you that banner
ads do not work you will find that if you go to the sites that they own you will
find, guess what?  That's right banners.  The fact is that 83% of all surfers
still get to targeted sites from banner placement on other sites of similar
interest.  That is the real key to banner ads, they must be targeted just like
any other form of advertising.  You will get hits with banner ads and you will
get hits with classifieds, and you will get hits with ezines, and you will get
hits with email sig. but only if they are all targeted toward the customers
interest that you wish to get to.  Do not put a banner up an a site that
advertises or sell shovels if you want to attract people that like to go
boating.  Do you homework and you will have great success with your banner ads.

From:Franklin Banker
Subject:Gateway Pages

Gateway Pages have been, and still are a very effective
and useful marketing tool. I know this because I use my
own version of a gateway page to market for most of my
affiliate partners.  In my personal experience my gateway
pages have driven far more sales than links I build to the
merchant's sites from my main website in the "shopping"
genre.

I call my gateway pages "content rich gateway pages",
for the simple reason that I give the visitor specific infor-
mation about the merchant which I derive from the sites
"about us" page, coupled with one banner link and one
text link in the body of the page.  My gateway pages do
not auto-redirect.  The visitor must click the link to go
to the merchant website.

Very often, the content page I create will get a higher
listing in search engines than even I anticipated, such
as one I have had up for 2 years for etoys. I was very
sad to see etoys go under, as in 2 years that gateway
page earned me over $7,000 in referral commissions.
That was one small page which took me 20 minutes to
create. If only they all could be that good!

I am an affiliate for the major networks. BeeFree, CJ,
Linkshare, Quinstreet, Cyberbounty and Click Bank.
Using merchants in those programs, I build 3 to 5 new
"content rich" gateway pages every week.  Of course,
a few of these are leading to very well known merchant
names with huge branding success. A combination of
my skill and their good names makes those pages work

Is there anywhere that you can learn how to write gateway pages? I would like to

keys word or what, or do you use a title at all on the gateway pages?

Subject:Question on advertising

I have been approached by a gentleman about advertising my mlm business
(http://mysiteinc.com/tfn/lfi.html) with his company.  They will print
my ad along with 6 others who are all non-competing on the back side of
cash register tape and then give the tapes to the local grocery store.
The tapes last between 90 and 120 days per run and the runs have 200,000
copies of my ad printed every 7th ad.  All ads repeat every 12 inches of
tape.  The question is has anyone ever used this form of advertising?
Was it effective?  Did you advertise your business or advertise one of
the products?  It was suggested that I advertise our weight loss product
first and then introduce happy customers to the business.  The salesman
claims that an excel rep started with one store and now has ads running
like this in every store in his state.  I would like to hear from others
on this.  Thanks for your input.

received excellent results ( 800 visitors, 10 sales and three requests for
product evaluations).

This is not a free service but a commercial offering which submits your

The company's tag line is "Small Business--Small Budget--Big Results" so
if your ad budget can handle a $99 hit, it may be more than justified.

Hi Bogdan, hi everybody.

I'm glad we are heading back into marketing techniques - I've been a
subscriber for little over a year now and I still have many issues
archived as there was always at least one little pearl of wisdom that I
could use in my business.
Anyway, I've worked hard to build up my traffic and I have to say -
I've had a good success - took it from about 200-300 to 3,000-
4,000 daily visitors in about a year, but here is my problem - my
conversion ratio sucks big time! If only each visitor spent 50 cents...
I know there are some problems with navigation and flow, but I might
be a bit too close to see the big picture and I'd like to ask you to take
a look and give me your honest opinion. I promise not to shoot the
messenger :o) Maybe it's time to give the designing and copywriting
job to a professional, and if so - who would you recommend?
Thank you in advance for your comments,

Does anyone have any ideas for improvements of the site?

Thanks

=====================Site Review Request  (5)===============
From:Lorraine Innes
Subject:Http://www.zdad.com/marcoisland/index.html

I had the site reviewed quite a
while ago and got some great advice which helped a lot.  I was listed at the
top of AOL and many other search engines.  However, I seem to have dropped
out of site (literally).  I don't seem to be able to get my site listed in
the Open Directory Project, which seems to be a very important place to be.
I did pay the fee to LookSmart to be in their registry and they did accept
the site, so I am hoping this will help some.  It is frustrating to come up
in the first 10 everywhere and then not at all.  I did have your once a
month automatic submission service.  I think I have one month left, but as
time goes by I disappear from more and more search engines.  I have been at
this for one year now and everytime I think I have it figured out, it gets
confusing again.  As I am only advertising two condos that I own and this is
not a business, I do not have a lot of advertising dollars to spend.  Any
suggestions.

My site is at Http://www.zdad.com/marcoisland/index.html

Thanks for any help.  I really enjoy your publication, especially now that
you have split it in two.

Lorraine Innes

It still needs work John, a lot of work, content needs to be added, in-depth
content about the products and services you represent, but your site is
presentable, so I believe that you can go a long way here. You DO need to
change the email address on your site to represent your chosen domain name.
Free Servers will automatically redirect the email to your sign-up email
address, so no one is the wiser.

Optimization Copywriting for Theme Indexing Search Engines
ByScott T. Smith

It's safe to say that the 'pay-per-inclusion' model is rapidly
catching on with today's search engines and directories as they
are forced to become profitable in a hurry. But there's also
another trend that's come to the fore.

'Theme indexing' is a process used by search engines to
determine an entire site's primary theme. In other words, your
complete set of Web pages is indexed as one, and defined as one.

This is why sites with multiple product lines and subject
content often get poor rankings today. To learn how to combat
this, let's first look at the theme indexing process from the
search engine's point of view.

According to Search Engine World, the theme indexing search
engine follows this basic 5-step progression as it 'weighs' what
a particular site is about:

1.  Page Titles
2.  Meta Tags
3.  Page Headings
4.  Page Content
5.  Links

This is a general overview of the approach - each search engine
is unique, and no'one has the ultimate read on every search
site. But to date this has proven to be true of Altavista,
Google, Excite, Lycos and Webcrawler.

All of these belong on the 'Who's Who' list of major search
sites today. If it's important that your Web business be found
among them, today you must write your site with theme indexing
in mind. Here's how:

The concept itself is simple. Focus your entire site like a
laser beam on a single, potent theme.

The process is ruthless. Get rid of the deadwood. Set up
additional sites as needed for each individual product and
service 'family'.

In the same way that you must now invest to get indexed on
Yahoo, LookSmart, Inktomi and other top directories, you need to
invest in separating your activities by theme into multiple Web
sites. Kick out unrelated content, links and affiliate programs
that don't relate to your market niche. Build new sites as
needed, with each focusing on its own unique selling
proposition. This is the first step to take in the optimization
copywriting process.

Having done this, here's how to write each site to get the best
possible positioning on theme indexing search engines.

Focus Your Keyphrase

Determine what keyphrase your entire site is about - a keyphrase
people use often on the search engines. To pick heavily
searched, popular keyphrases, try WordTracker:
http://www.wordtracker.com/.

Write Your Copy

Throughout your site play variations on your keyphrase theme.
Every element counts: page titles, meta tags, page headings,
page content, links.

Remember to write for people first. Search engines are robotic,
but people always want to know what's in your site for them.
Tell them what qualifies you to help, and what you have to
offer. Balance using your keyphrase with the benefits you
deliver.

Once you've written your copy, search your text for generic
phrases like 'our product' and substitute your keyphrase. Use
long copy where you can. Not only does it outsell shorter copy -
it also makes it easier for you to write keyword-rich text.

Format Your Text

Use keyphrase bullets. They break up text copy and serve you as
mini-headlines with an entirely different look and feel.

Use multiple headlines to create immediate context when a
visitor explores your site. Make these headlines specific by
using your keyphrase. Tag headlines in your source code - <H1>,
<H2> or <H3> - to highlight your theme.

Write your links as mini-headlines. Often people scan pages by
jumping from one link to another. Linkwords look very much like
headlines, or highlighted words, and should deliver your primary
message and keyphrase.

Measure and Test

Conventional wisdom tells us that the ideal keyword density is
somewhere between 3-7%. To check this before you submit, try the
free Keyword Density Analyzer: http://www.keyworddensity.com/.
For a more accurate read on individual search engines, do a
search under your keyphrase, then take the top 3 returns, enter
their URLs and try to match their percentages before you submit.
Track your placement and adjust accordingly.

This is the initial approach to optimization copywriting for theme
indexing search engines. Keep it simple: start here.
