Carol,
I agree with you 100%.  The challenge is to find an opportunity with what used
to be called "Value-Added".  In other words, is NEW revenue being created when a
sale is made?

The internet and desk top publishing software have replaced copy machines and
"quick print" type businesses in the duplication of printed information.  We no
longer have to pay a printer to prepare our information for us to give to
others.  Now we can post that info on the web in an easily duplicable form.  If
the information being sold is truly helpful, then the answer to the value added
question is "yes", new value has been added when that information is sold or
passed on. If, as in many cases, the information simply tells you how to set up
a website that tells others how to set up a website that gives information on
setting up a website (ad infinitum), then no value has been added and you might
as well join a "gifting club".

Other legitimate business opportunities abound both online and off.  Many
companies have seized the internet as a way to expand their customer base and
have found it quite profitable.  The key is, once again, added value.  When a
company creates a product, pays its employees for producing that product, then
pays its salespeople a commission for selling that product to the end user,
value has been added ... new revenue has been created.

Let's say you have a company with genuine products and you are seeking new
customers.  Using the internet as an additional prospect generation tool is
fantastic.  The key is to set yourself apart from the crowd at the very
beginning.  Joe Farrell has written an excellent article entitled "Don't get
burned in MLM" which you can find at: http://www.repeatbiz.net/burned.html .
What the title does NOT say is that the points he makes can be applied to ANY
home business, not just MLM or network marketing businesses.

Bottom line:
Look for a company that produces unique, proprietary products or services that
people already use.
Look for a company that has a strong financial history and a verifiable record
of paying on time.
Look for a company that forbids front-loading and one that forbids "buying your
way to the upper levels".
Look for a company that has a high number of repeat customers month after month.
As Bogdan or anyone else who is making money online will tell you, it does take
work to earn a living.  The difference today is that it is possible to do most
of your work from home instead of on the road or in an office.

Subject:Bogus Business Opportunities

Hello,

I have been reading the digest for the past month or two and feel this is
a good place and time to speak up about the Internet Business world. After
reading two articles in the past issue (Any Ideas?? & Bogus Business
Opportunities) I realized that my downlines are not the only ones getting fed
up with it. First of all I must say if you believe in those "Get Rich Quick"
web sites then I have lots of Real Estate for sale. It seems that more and
more people are sold on the idea that if they sign up, get a web site and do a
little promoting they are going to be receiving their first check within 2
weeks, well if you get a check in your first 2 months you would be doing quite
well. I think everyone should know how it really works before they get into it
and this is how it has been explained to me. First things first you need to
build traffic to your site, and just submitting to search engines could take
months to generate one hit, my advice is submit, submit, submit and submit
some more, then use click thrus (all of my referrals) in the past 2 months
came from using click thrus hour after hour, day after day, get the picture?
It Takes TIME! and if you don't have time then you better have the money to
invest in your promotions. The average ratio of hits to referrals is about
1000:1 (just a guestimate) but the bottom line is you have to look at it over
a long term commitment, the simple fact is that most people don't fail in this
business they just give up. If you work at it long enough and put in an honest
effort, in time you will see results it all depends on you and how bad you
want it. I could go on for hours about this but for lack of time and space I
will leave it at that if anyone would like to contact me send

Regarding Carol's post in issue 239, O K so now you feel like an "idiot on the
net", you'll get over it and come away wiser for your experience.

On the net as in real life there are many opportunities and many rip-offs, the
thing to remember is IF IT SEEMS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE............

There are actually many good opportunities out there and a lot of them are free
to join, I am not going to advertise any of them, You will find them, Just take
your time and research it a little better before you join, What I have found
from personal experience is if some one is trying to sell you an opportunity to
"get in on the ground floor" or "hit the ground running" or "limited time offer"
Be extra careful. If it is legitimate then taking a few days or weeks to make
your decision won't make any difference.

Hope this helps, I also got ripped off many times before I learned

I'm just tired of BOGUS business ops!
Idiot on the net!
Carol

Please do not refer to yourself as a Idiot.  While it looks easy to make money
on the Internet, it is not easy.  If HTML was more complicated and the entire
process looked as difficult as it actually is, then we would not experience the
level of frustration that is obvious in your and almost everybody's posts to
Adland Digest.

95% of all new businesses in the USA fail.  I am a real estate broker in
Southern Indiana and there is a 95% turnover every three years in real estate.
It could be that to many advertisers are telling us how easy it is to succeed,
if we just buy their course/join their  program, etc.

The key to success is education and training.  Keep reading the manuals and
always read Adland Digest.  I have been following the teachings and methods of
Dr Ken Evoy and my http://www.967andy.com site is an attempt to do what he says.
Although the site is primarily about real estate, I have an Introduction to
ecommerce and links to Dr Ken Evoy's free training.

You will find it a great advantage if you stick to a subject that you know.  As
an example, if you loved collecting a certain type of antique, You should write
a web site or newsletter about that subject.  Then find affiliate programs that
sell things related to or used by people that collect that certain antique.  A
multi-millionaire once told me "Stick with what you know."  That is probably the
best advice that I could pass on to you.

Good Luck

Subject:Spamming

Dear Sirs

Here are my views on spamming.
I think the cure for spamming is worse than the
disease - it's no less than killing a fly by
throwing an atom bomb at it. Before I go any
further, I will say this - I have not spammed,
being too scared to.  However, neither have I sent
any emails, being afraid of being accused of
spamming. Result - no E-business, no money.

Who are these spammers anyway? Are they not
genuine people who merely want to make some money
on the Internet? Emails are the easiest way of
sending messages, and if everyone was obliged to
send a message along the lines of:  "Hit "reply"
and put "Remove" in the subject line, and you will
not hear from me again" - and make sure that they
do remove those wishing to be removed, then I
can't see that sending out unsolicited emails will
be such a problem. Perhaps, in addition, people
should be precluded from sending, say, more than
50 emails a day so that ISPs won't get too
overloaded with messages. Contacting 350 people a
week should be enough, and not too much, I don't
think.

I consider this method to be far more benign than
this vindictiveness in immediately notifying a
mailer's ISP so that they lose their account,
their URL - in short, everything that can give
them some hope of a better life.

I believe the real culprits are these over-the-top
angry tell-tales.  The whole spamming arena has
got completely out of hand, in favour of the
afore-mentioned.

I hope whoever agrees with these views will write
to their Ezines, to state their views so that
collectively we can turn this spamming business
around to a normal level, not sending too many
unsolicited emails, but also not being in constant
danger of being ousted from the Net.

Sincerely
Desi

As an ezine publisher and author, I am concerned about being accused of
spamming.

My solution was to find a web hosting company that has a rational approach
to dealing with spam complaints.  In other words, they investigate
first.  Having discussed the spam issue with them, they know I publish a
newsletter and write articles that link back to my site hosted on their
servers.

I recommend that if you publish frequently and are concerned about falsely
being accused of spamming, then talk to your ISP or web host.  If they
don't clearly spell out how they handle spam complaints, then find another
host.

The bottom line is that web hosts and ISPs that have effective spam
policies and PROCESSES for handling complaints will end up with more
accounts than those firms that don't.

Delete me from their ads.  I reported this company to My ISP ( Prodigy Network)

There needs to be some specific set of rules to follow so a legitimate marketer

I have a couple of rules that I follow with regards to spam:

1.  Ignore most of it.  It is just some person trying to get an edge in the
Internet and not sure of "how" or "why".  If what they are saying doesn't matter
150 years from now, forget it.

2.  Read some of it.  If it is an honest letter, like they are trying to
actually communicate with you instead of "at" you, who knows, you might learn
something.

3.  Get some "software" that helps you cull out those naughties.  It's there for
the having.  Not perfect, but there.

4.  Keep records of whom you subscribe to.

5.  Do what you said you were going to do.  (At least, in my instance.  I have
reported to USA.net for one insistent nut and Nope, I haven't charged anybody
$200/hour yet.  They don't do it again.  I think it would be the best Internet
Marketing Program yet and I have looked into it seriously.)

Take care and keep your socks on.  It is irritating sometimes, but guess what -
How do your emails affect others?  Even if you have p e r m i s s i o n.  And
let's keep the authorities out of the Internet - OK?

I agree 100% with Mr. Weed. There is an ever-growing nuisance with unsolicited
commercial advert (Spam). There needs to be some action taken but instead of
arresting the activities of the small time spammers, why not go after the
companies who produce the software that extracts the email address. This seems
criminal to me. Why can someone go to my site, extract all of the email
addresses without permission. The email addresses are on my site for the
convenience of legitimate visitors who need to contact me.

I honestly don't mind getting mail from people I do not know. The sore spot
develops when I get the same message from 20 masked addresses and they ask me to
email my information or call some 800# and leave my information on a recording.
This is beyond stupid. I sit back and laugh at some of the absolutely stupid
mail that flows into my inbox. I probably receive 200 junk mail messages every
day. I have been doing business on the Internet since 1995. I have reached a
reasonable degree of success and I have never sent SPAM.

Junk mail does not produce positive results. There are too many people on the
Internet who want to jump in, send millions of Junk emails to sign up to some
stupid free program that 99.99% of the time will not work. They do this because
they think that they can get rich with no investment and no hard work. These are
sick people.

I do not mind getting legitimate offers ONE TIME. I hate stupid email that
doesn't
't make sense or is a copy of the same sales letter that thousands of others
have already sent. Nothing is sillier than an amateur trying to pass off as a
professional without proofing his message. If they would first send the email to
themselves maybe they would realize just how stupid it looks.

I step down from my soap box. Have a nice day and DO NOT SPAM.

It's been my experience that CCNOW (http://www.ccnow.com) is a much better
source for low (NO up front) cost credit card processing.  They have no set-up

Subject:Google AdWords

I'll try to make this short, and sweet! Your question with regard to the
impression/sales ratio for the Adwords program is interesting to me. I have
been using Google AdWords for several months. I am very pleased with their
handling, and administration of this program. It seems to be a very simple,
reasonable, and straight forward approach to targeted advertising. The
click-through rate to sales ratio is very low, but I seem to be meeting my
goal of increasing traffic, and driving the right kind of buyers to my site.
My click through rate is only about 3%, however, the sales ratio from those
click-through's seems to be very high (somewhere in the neighbourhood of
50%+). I haven't generated the amount of traffic that I'd like, but it does
seem to be a very cost effective tool. Recently paid to run a banner across
the "Rich Media Network", and ended up with a click-through rate of 12/5000.
THAT was a waste of money!
My opinion is that AdWords is worth a shot. The beauty of the program is that
they offer very low minimum's, and you have the liberty to cancel at any
time, flexibility, etc. The primary problem with most of this kind of
advertising is that while there are a lot of claims being made regarding cost
effectiveness, nobody will take responsibility to that end. They can always
make the excuse that your advertising copy, banner, etc, were simply not
written effectively enough! At least with AdWords, you can tweak it as you
go. They offer a considerable amount of flexibility with regard to changing
your ad, and keyword.
Hope this was helpful!
Good Luck.

set up fee of $100 and a $75 per month for the same 37,000 hits. That was some
time ago so I can't say if this is the same program. However the reason why I
didn't join was that the one time set up fee only applied if you continue with
your monthly fee of $75. If your monthly fee became lapsed you would have to pay
another $100 set up fee if you decided to re start the program. Please ensure
that this is not so with this program.

Subject:Mass Marketing.

I received got this info about mass marketing from another newsletter (see
below):

A note quick about
http://www.massmarketingprogram.com
Not to say this company is a scam but it doesn't look very good..

We will provide you some info that we found out about this company and you
decide for yourself.
One thing is for sure, http://www.massmarketingprogram.com will NEVER get any
of our money:)!

Before sending any ONLINE company more than 20 bucks, check up on them. Its
been our experience if it sounds to good to be true it really is.

Mass Marketing wants a $100.00 dollar set-up fee and another $75.00 bucks to
deliver 37,500 hits per month to any website or webpage you want to promote..
Now that might seem like a lot of money for some people, but it isn't.. In
fact it is very cheap..
Could this really be true and an honest deal for the Internet user??

This is what I found out about MASS Marketing..

According to a domain search on them we found they are based in New York,
USA..
Yet all the contact info they provided is false!!! HUM this strange we
thought!
Why would an honest company use false info???

Well, we started to dig some more.. We knew of a company that was being
promoted by the mass marketing MEMBERS.. I asked the owner of this company If
we could view their hit logs sent from Mass marketing members.. The owner was
very happy to help us and gave us copies of her log files..

This is what we found out.. Mass Marketing is based in NY yet they are using
a redirector server in Taiwan!! NOW, this is real Strange!!! We also noticed
all the HITS that mass marketing were sending had NO referral URL, this is
also very strange!!! What it looks like they are doing is, they are using a
redirecting server based in Taiwan and ROBOTS to send you the hits. In short
you are getting FALSE hits..

We even went a step further.. I contacted a MASS MARKETING member "USER"..
We got the url and banner info that this person was trying to promote with
the mass marketing system. Then a team of us watched MSN like a hawk.. Didn't
mass Market claim they would market their users on MSN??
YES, THEY DID claim they advertised on MSN for all their members!! Well,
after watching MSN for a week, NONE of us could find ONE single banner on MSN
that was being promoted by mass marketing.. Now this is very strange.

Think we are nuts?? Well, if you're a member of mass marketing, set-up a
tracker on the page they are promoting for you.. Then trace where all your
hits are coming from..
Your hits are coming from a redirector in Taiwan and you will NOT see one hit
form MSN or any other such site, like they claim..

Do your own checking up on this company, here is their info.. Good luck
contacting them.. We tried to contact them with no luck at all. I even tried
411 information and found no listing, or any such company listed in the phone
records EVER..

Yours truly,
Dave South

It's unusual to find free classified sites like

to your ad (via Email notification when a visitor

Yet knowing the effectiveness of an ad is absolutely
vital for the online marketer.

Hence the rise of one of the most powerful of
marketing tools - the ad tracking program.

After looking in vain for a suitable guide to these
tools I decided to create my own.

"The Complete Guide to Ad Tracking Programs"
at Ad-Tracking.com describes how ad tracking programs
work, how they differ, what to look for and provides
product reviews.

However, the unexpected outcome of my research was
the discovery of a host of other uses for ad tracking
programs in addition to the basic function of capturing
details of ad placements.

So having started with the one basic reason for using
an ad tracking program there are now over 20 - with
particular benefits for publishers of ezines and
for affiliates.

Quick example ?

If you visit the site using this tracking Url

I will know exactly how many of you have clicked on

=====================Site Review Request  (1)===============
From:C. R. Dick
Subject:http://navehumor.com

I've been getting Adland Digest for a while now and this is my first post.
I've put together a Humor site (indirect revenue from Banner Ads and email
clickthroughs) and while it's far from everything I want it to be, I would
just like to run it by anyone from here who wants to take a look around.

Please tell me any suggestions you have for making things better.    And By
the way I am looking for folks who speak other languages to franchise out
other language versions.  It's all set up for it, all you'd have to know is
HTML, we'd work a revenue percentage deal for you.  It's a fairly major
translation/adaptation job at first, and after that it's just looking after
things a little each day, and you might be able to get other people to do
some of it for you.

From:Steve @ Crissy
Subject:http://www.Create-Website.com

Hello,

My wife and I operate a small internet business.  We are distributors for a web
hosting company called igrapevine.

We have had a web site since Dec. 2000 to sell this hosting service but so far
have had no sales via the internet.

We would like to have our site reviewed to improve our sales.

Our url is http://www.Create-Website.com

Do you have any suggestions?

Thank You for your time,

Steve @ Crissy

=====================Site Review Response  (1)===============
From:Puamana
Subject:http://astrologicinsights.com

Dear Marianne - your link to your credit card processor is broken, it displays
your account information with them, instead of your products and their pricing.
You may have forgotten to set-up your database/shopping cart on their server?

Your check link is also broken (Page cannot be displayed).

The only working form on your site is the 'feedback' form, and that is why you
are getting requests through it.

Go over your set-up with your processors again and be sure you have the links
correctly entered in your html document.

Aloha,
puamana

Ad Writing And Tracking: Tips n Tricks
ByShahnaz Rauf

A lot has already been written about writing attention
grabbing, interest generating advertisements. However
as editor of a `free ad` newsletter, I regularly
receive tons of `no pull` ads. Due to the critical
nature of this issue, I will walk you through the ad
writing and tracking short cuts once more:

Ad Writing:

1.Write an Attention grabbing headline: This should
use
a psychological trigger to intrigue or pique
curiosity.
Some of the most effective forms are:

-Informative:

Discover The Ten ways to...

Amazing Breakthrough: Latest report...

Excellent Golden Business Opportunity, Join Free

-Question:

Do You Know...?

How To...?

-Warning:

Don`t read this ad if...

Scam Alert!..

-Call to attention:

Calling All Writers..

Attention Mothers...

2.Ad description: Write 3 or 4 lines loaded with power
words and giving a vivid very specific description of
BENEFITS Not Features. For example compare the two
ads:

-40 advertising spaces available in xyz mall. High
traffic location, competitive pricing. For more info
contact...

-Do you want your hit counter to go crazy? Do you want
to explode your sales? Excellent ad location. Hurry
limited spaces. Contact..

Which ad will you click? - You get my point?

3. Contact information: This should be the link/
e-mail
address for the relevant information. Again I find a
lot of un-clickable links. The HTML code for links is:

-For site address (URL)

http://www.yourdomainname.com
(www.yourdomainname.com is your site address)

-For e-mail links

mailto:yourname@yourdomainname.com
(yourname@yourdomainname.com is your e-mail/
autoresponder address).

4.Wrapping to 60/65 characters per line: This is a
real
head ache not only for ad writers but also for ezine
article writers and editors as well.

The hard and most common way is to write using your
word processor, then copy and paste to your e-mail and
press enter after every 60/65 characters including
spaces.

A smart technique is to automate your word wrapping
right on line using the free e-mail formatting utility
at: http://www.jbmckee.com/formatit/

Alternative Tip For Front Page Users: Insert your word
file into front page, convert text to table, merge
cells, set table width to 464 and border size to zero.
Save. Copy the entire table (not text) and paste it to
your e-mail. This gives you 60 characters per line. [I
suggest you use your hotmail account to send it to a
Yahoo account and then copy and send it back. This
will remove any HTML].

Ad Tracking:

Once you have written your ad you need to test and
track it`s performance. Ad tracking is an absolute
necessity if you want to maximize results with minimum
budget. You need to know where your responses are
coming from and which ads are `pulling` more. To get
the maximum returns on your investment, you need to
concentrate on the most responsive mediums. A few
easily implemented tactics are:

1.E-mail links with subject lines: For each ad you use
a different subject line. Say if your e-mail address
is
abc@xyz.com and you are advertising in ezine1, your
link will be

mailto:abc@xyz.com?subject=ezine1

2.Mirror Pages: If your URL name is www.xyz.com and
your home page is index.html, you upload several
copies of your home page and save them as index1,
index2, etc. Put a site meter on each of the mirror
pages, use different ads/ezines for each page. Here
your link will take the form:

http://www.xyz.com/index1.html

3.Autoresponders: For each Ad you use an email link
with an autoresponder. Use an autoresponse sales
message. For instance if you are tracking ad1 and ad2
you use two autoresponders and your links will be of
the form:

mailto:ad1@yourdomain.com and

mailto:ad2@yourdomain.com

This method gives you a very accurate picture.

4.If you don`t want to do any of the above, you can
use the free tracking services at
http://www.linkcounter.com .

=====================Joke of the Day   (1)===============

Little Johnny farts in the classroom and his teacher gets really
upset and throws him out. He goes and sits outside the class
but he can't stop laughing.

The principal walks by and sees him sitting outside laughing
and he says, "Little Johnny what are you doing sitting here
laughing?"

Little Johnny says, "I farted in class and the teacher threw me
out."

The principle says, "Well then why are you laughing?"

Little Johnny says, "Cause the dumb idiots are sitting in the
class smelling my fart and here I am outside in this beautiful
weather
