================== Word from publisher ====================

Greetings All

Welcome  180 new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

                                    ----===(*)===-----

During over two years of running of Adland Digest, there were
several situations where  I was blamed for advertising content
in the ads. Digest is supported merely by  advertising and
I don't even attempt to  cover all of the costs of publishing ,
or my time spent on  putting it together. Since this digest started,
subscriber list grew to close 25,000 and just sending  one issue is
currently quite an expense in terms of using bandwidth, hardware
and software. In short this means that in order to justify running
this publication, there is need to run advertising or some sort
of sponsorship. I never had any problems with selling of advertising
space here but issues which  popped up several times, are making
me more and more thinking of finding other solution to support
this publication and keep it on acceptable quality level.

I would like to know if there are  any subscribers on this list, who
would rather pay e.g.  $15 per year and  receive Adland Digest
ads-free?  This way  I could still run version of Adland Digest
with advertising but  only for those who want it free but with
the assumption that they can't complain about advertisement
and if they do, they would be offered issue for a fee where
there is no advertising.
Please give me your comments.

From:Tony Murtagh

Hi Bogdan

following on from the poem in your last issue, I would like to make the
following contribution along similar lines

You are the man who used to boast
That you'd achieve the uttermost,
Some day.
You merely wished a show,
To demonstrate how much you know
And prove the distance you can go .

Another year we've just passed through.
What new ideas came to you?
How many big things did you do?
Time . left twelve fresh months in your care
How many of them did you share
With opportunity and dare
Again where you so often missed?
We do not find you on the list of Makers Good,
Explain the fact!
Ah no, 'twas not the chance you lacked!
As usual - you failed to act!

By Herbert Kauffman.

Best wishes

I thought , as Tom did that the no more hits was a great one.  I, being new
at this business thought this was a great source of advertising.  However,
one of the advertisements was for a co-op of buyers to purchase huge ads
there.  That means, that the whole premise gets screwed up and that only a
few watch and most of the ads are those that are paid for who don't watch
at all.

Phil,

This looks to me like a "snowjob".  How are these supposed visitors finding
your site?  My guess is that they are just using a bot to repeatedly hit
your site.

You can test if real people are visiting your site by inserting some sort
of tracking that monitors file downloads.  For example, it is doubtful that
a bot would be downloading any graphics when it hits your site.  Most real
visitors would show up in a tracking system that logs downloads of gifs and
jpegs, but the bot probably would not.  My guess is that these "visitors"
won't show up in such a system.

Best regards,

Phil Calvert

DUD MASS MARKETING
Phil Sheline.

Hi there!

Yes I got caught up in this Mass Marketing thing.  Goodness didn't
want to spam anyone.  (Which really is quite a ridiculous subject
since most of the Internet Guru's perpetuated Spam in the first place.
Besides you can block spam on most email services.  ProntoMail.com is
brilliant... Nuff said.)

Yes very odd some of the supposed conditions and time delays.  Didn't like
the prospect of me using any Java script on my marketing site.  This being a
hit counter.  Hmmm any one smelling Sardines?  Just when I'd jumped through
enough hoops and about to demand a refund they relented.  Interesting advice
they offered regards to placing banner ads on site.

Quite frankly at the time I think they were offering a basic price of $50
per month.  Now I certainly would not use any dubious company again.
I might as well sit in front of my computer and keep on hitting the refresh
button to amuse myself, while smoking roll your own cigarettes made out
of dollar notes.

However I do know of a few reputable companies that can send anywhere up to
10,000 or more real live unique visitors.  Whats more my conversion ratio was
extremely good.  My E-Zine with an onsite form was attracting about a 20% sign
up. If any one would like to know more please feel free to email me at:-

Debra & Seqkat;

Thanks for your comments on PayPal. I'm mainly interested in offering
non-merchant account payment options to my Web Site Publishing clients at
http://www.stevepronger.com (phew, got the link in!). As I said in my last post,
I use Kagi which is probably a better choice if you need a shopping cart style
payments page with lots of product choices. It can be a tricky to configure
though. PayPal seems to work better for single payments with a "click here to
buy" button.

What both of these companies lack though, is the ability to accept payment in
multiple currencies. This is an important consideration for non-US merchants
like me. Kagi stated at one stage that they were going to introduce this
feature, but seem to have given up on the idea. Does anyone know of any payment
solutions provider who can provide this feature?

Also, does anyone know how to capture a whole web page and save it as a JPEG?
Thanks. Oh, Going Platinum have launched their ISP and Platinum Office email
client. Just thought I'd throw that in ;-)

Cheers

Subject:Hidden Costs

Hi,
Be careful of PayPal if you are not in USA.  I have not used it for WebAccept
yet because of problems I experience with making payments via them when I
purchase items on ebay.

I am in England and their international service has a major problem in that they
charge for every transaction but do not show that charge anywhere.  They have a
page giving general info on their charges, but when I make a transaction - say
for $10 - my account transaction page shows $10, not , say, $11.50 being the
transaction plus the charge.  Then my credit card gets charged $11.50 but there
is no name or reference number on the card statement that can be tied up with
the transaction.  So if several amounts are within a few dollars of each other,
which they frequently are, I have absolutely no way of knowing which amount is
for which transaction.

I have pleaded with them to at least show it correctly on my account page or to
put a reference on the credit card, but they refuse to.  If other payment
portals such as Billpoint can do it, why can't they?  I have had up to 20
transactions on one credit card statement and have had to guess at which is for
what item.  I would hate to have to cope with this lack of proper reporting on
customer purchases.  It could cause havoc, if (hopefully it wouldn't happen)
someone wanted a refund or had a major question about their product/payment I
would simply not know which was theirs.

Wendy

My comments are on the Paypal subject.
I've been using Paypal for about 7 months for one of
the payment options at my website and I have no
complaints. I love their service and sure am glad they
started that program. They gave alot of us the chance to
start our own businesses and it's working great.

I also noticed someone mentioned Propay.
They are a good service to use especially for people
who don't want to be a member of paypal. Yes it takes
a few extra days to get into your bank but that's a new
customer. Isn't that how it's supposed to be in business,
Customer's First? Besides that's extra money your making
for putting that extra payment system on your website.

That's just my opinion.:)

Take Care Eveyone,

These bad ways of trying to get business

As if the end is justification for any type of ploy you can think of.
As a person doing business on the internet -
I find that half my problem with trying to talk to people is because of
the ploys this lady suggest people use. It has gotten so hard for
business people to get people to open their mail even when it will be

Hi,

I have to take exception to Melanie Kozik's method of
using a "decoy" to falsely get someone to open an
email. My personal experience with that type of
marketing is not good. I don't try to "scam" someone
into opening my email ad. If I am not good enough to
place a captivating headline, then I do not deserve to
have my email read. If I try to "trick" someone into
opening an ad and they actually do look, how can I
expect them to trust me and "buy" the product? No I'm
sorry, I wholly do not agree with Melanie's method.

Subject:Interesting new marketing concept...any thoughts?

Hello Bogdan and Adland Digest members,

I have been a faithful Digest subscriber for just over
3 years, and I value the digest members opinions. This
is my first contribution to the digest and I have a
favor to ask. I recently ran across a very interesting
concept in marketing. It is a portal page with over
400 different merchants. I signed up for this
opportunity, and the links to 50 of these merchants
became my links. The portal is set up to act as a
homepage for anyone that chooses to use it as such.It
also has the ability for visitors to sign up for their
own portal page for FREE. There is an upgrade option,
and the interesting part is, if I upgrade all 400
links become mine, and when somebody signs up from my
portal, and they choose not to upgrade then my links
will carry over to their page for 350 of those
merchants. I actually would get MORE benefits from
them NOT upgrading. Now for the favor, I would like
the digest subscribers opinion on this concept.
Doesn't it seem strange that you would receive more by
having them not upgrade? It makes me question the
motivation for wanting to encourage sign-ups to
upgrade. Anyway I would like for the Adland
subscribers to offer their opinions on this marketing
concept. If you could go and take a look at this site
and maybe read the affiliate terms. Let me know your
opinions on this, I would
appreciate it.

Internet Marketing/search engines
ByJonathan Leyland

Search engines currently only contain approximately 40% of the World-Wide
Web sites in existence. Search engines are still the way the majority of
Internet users find Web sites.
Simply posting your Web site to search engines is not enough. If you take a
major search engine, such as AltaVista, and enter "golf shirts" as a search
term, you'll probably get notified that there are over 20,000 Web sites
containing the term "golf shirts".
There are 10 Web sites listed per page. How many search engine pages will
you look at while you are picking a golf shirt to buy? Statistically, you
will only look at 3 pages of the search engine before you either make a
purchase or give up. What about the other 19,970 or so? Well, the good news
is that their search engine posting worked. The bad news is that they will
never be found.
How did the lucky company that occupies slot number 2000 get there? Simple.
They didn't know what they were doing.
They may have gone to an extreme and developed the cheapest Web site
possible (the "12 year old kid across the street" syndrome) and found one of
those places that promises to submit your site to 700 search engines for
free. Conversely, they may have paid a professional Web design company to
develop a quality site and then taken advantage of the free 700 postings to
search engines.
Let's take an extreme example where a company posts to 100 search engines by
hand and still can't be found. Why? Again, because they don't know what
they're doing. There are, roughly, 10 major search engines that generate the
majority of Web site traffic. If you can obtain a position within the first
30 entries for each of your chosen keywords, you will see a great deal of
traffic coming to your site.
OK, now let's debunk some more myths.
Can anybody guarantee you that you will be in the #1 position on a search
engine?
No, they cannot.
Search engines are continually changing their rules and the way they rank
sites to try and become as accurate as possible for a searcher. If search
engine technology were as accurate as the Web users would like, there
wouldn't be over 2500 search engines to begin with. On the other hand, you
can be fooled into it by creating a keyword for your site that nobody else
on the Web would use, like "snarfle". If you search the search engine for
"snarfle", you'll be in the #1 position.
Sounds great, right? Wrong. Web visitors find your site by entering a
keyword that they think will find what they need. Since nobody but you will
use "snarfle" as a search term, it's a waste of time and effort.
The #1 position shouldn't be your objective. Your objective should be to
exist within the first 30 entries for your keywords on as many search
engines as possible.
Let's say that you got lucky and wound up as number 26 on a specific search
engine with a valid keyword for your business. Will you remain there
forever? No. The search engines are continually changing the way they index
sites and you are subject to being bumped further down the list on any given
day. In addition, someone whose site has been carefully designed to obtain
the best search engine ranking might also push you further down the list. At
#26, you don't have a lot of room to move before you disappear.
Another myth is that someone can get you a high position on ALL the major
search engines.
Each search engine is an independent business, run by independent people.
The search engines get revenue from advertising. The advertising rates are
based upon the number of visitors to that search engine per day. The more
accurate a search engine is at obtaining valid results for a visitor, the
more visitors they will get and, therefore, more income. They are
continually changing their rules and a rules change might cause your
submission to disappear within the thousands of entries never to be seen.
Search engine ranking with an Internet marketing company, like bizinter.net
involves a "best effort" approach. The reality is that you probably will not
make top ranking on all the major engines, but if you can get in, and stay
in, the top 30 entries on 5 or 6 of the major search engines, you will get
significant traffic.
NOTE: Search Engine ranking is also very dependent on the "popularity" of
your Web site. Popularity, in terms of search engines, is how many Web sites
have links pointing to your Web site.

Sincerely
Jonathan Leyland

At one point during a game, the coach said to one of his

What a team is?" The little boy nodded in the affirmative.

"Do you understand that what matters is whether we win

The little boy nodded yes.

"So," the coach continued, "when a strike is called, or you're

you understand all that?"

Again the little boy nodded.

"Good," said the coach.

"Now go over there and explain it to your mother."
