Greetings All

Welcome  130 new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

                                          ----===(*)===-----

Today subject message was done on purpose
Bogda this is your last free issue, unless you read it.

I didn't mean at all to introduce paid subscription but wanted to
know how many of you just read it because of the subject.
This newsletter is about advertising and we had several  topics  recently
which brought some controversial discussions. One of them was
creating effective  ad headings.

In the section "Melanie's email advice" , Melanie asked me to write
my view about her  article (which appeared two issues ago)
and comment reaction to this article.
http://www.adlandpro.com/archives/242.htm

So here it goes.
Melanie's article appeared in  former issue of Adland Digest because
I know her  probably for over two years and I know what kind
of person she is from her previous contributions. My view of her
article which appeared in issue 242 was an attempt to teach how
to write ad headings. She wasn't encouraging to spam but how
you should communicate in the era of spam when people delete
messages just based on the subject message (I delete each
day about 300 such messages) She tried to analyze messages
which she received and point out why they were effective.

I deal with advertising each day and people ask me  how
to make effective ads. They even pay for it.
Unfortunately due to overload of information it is harder
each day with getting of your message across and
companies  look for more sophisticated ways.
You have few seconds to win your visitor.

The question now is. Should you  write your message  without
any sophistication and face possibility of extinction or do
what anybody else is doing?

Now Just click this link which has a counter to  indicate that
you are reading it. You will be offered free products.

                                          ----===(*)===-----

I would like to thank everybody who responded to my question regarding
ad-free newsletter and paid subscription. Due to the large number of posts,
there is only portion printed today and the remainder will be printed in
the next issue.

I have also several posts in respect to other current  threads, but due
to space limitation, they will be continued in next issues.

This is a difficult question that many publishers are facing.  There are
several options available:

1) Paid subscriptions has been a tough sale for publishers that try to move
from FREE to FEE directly.  What has worked for some is the creation of a
premium publication that in addition to no ads, provides exclusive
information or content not available anywhere else.

2) Raise your ad rates.  You have a high quality publication with an
attentive and involved audience.  You may be attracting the wrong type of
advertisers by setting your price too low.

3) Use performance based advertising of products and services (affiliate
programs) you can personally support and recommend.

4) Thoroughly investigate potential advertisers and their creative to make
sure they meet your highest standards.

5) Place a disclaimer in the header of your publications stating that your
inclusion of paid advertisements is not an endorsement of the company or
product.  Readers should conduct their own due diligence.

6) Ignore the complainers and whiners.  Tell them to start their own
publication if they don't like the way you're running yours.

Here are a few additional tips I extracted from our free ebook "Insiders
Tips For Publishing A Successful Newsletter"

<begin excerpt>
If you decide you want to launch a paid subscription newsletter, there are
a lot of little things you need to think about, including:
· The content you include in a paid subscription newsletter must be unique
and not obtainable elsewhere. For most people offering a paid subscription
newsletter, that will mean that they write all of the content themselves or
pay someone to do so.
· What will be the payment frequency and how will you deal with rebilling?
Tip: the model we are seeing that works best is to have a trial
subscription for two to four issues (depending on your publishing schedule)
with a normal annual subscription plan. However, from a profit perspective,
a daily or weekly newsletter with a monthly subscription fee brings in the
largest profits.
· With a paid subscription model, you will likely alienate subscribers if
you include third-party advertising or if you spend too much space on
self-promotion. A rule of thumb we are recommending to clients is to spend
at least four-fifths of copy space on content and the balance on
self-promotion.
· What will you do about subscription fees if you decide to stop
publishing? If you are charging people for an annual subscription and you
stop publishing after only a month into their subscription, you need to
make sure you have money kept aside to provide refunds on the balance.
· Will you have a refund policy or guarantee if someone wants to cancel
their subscription or is not satisfied with the content?
· With a paid subscription newsletter, it is more important than with a
free one that you follow your promoted publishing schedule. Consequently,
you need to take into account your work schedule, vacations, etc. It is
especially important to prepare issues at least two or three weeks in
advance in case an illness or personal crisis strikes.
· What will you do with past issues? You don't want to make them accessible
in a public area because your paid subscribers might be peeved. What you
might want to do is prepare an executive summary of each article that is
keyword rich. Once you have a number of old issues available, you might
want to consider offering a compilation available in e-book format that new
subscribers can purchase for an additional fee. For instance, if you charge
$20 a month for a weekly newsletter, charge $25 additional for an e-book
containing your past 10 issues.
<end excerpt>

Hope this helps.

Hello Bogdan & fellow subscribers;

>I would like to know if there are any subscribers on this list, who

>ads-free?

Bogdan, I was going to write you personally on this one, but
decided to post to the list to see if your other subscribers
agree with my thoughts.  I suspect many of them may. : )

I, personally, do not mind advertising. I have bought much
of the software on my computer as a result of seeing an
ad in an ezine. I click on advertisers links - and I admit it!

However, for me, the issue is not *having* ads, but the
quality of the ad. For example, an ad for a cd filled with
email addresses is not one I will click on.  There are far
too many companies out there harvesting addresses, selling
addresses and contributing to the UCE problem.

I have had to shut down my ezine to clean the list because
my subscribe address was added to one of those cd's
and I was bombed with hundreds of emails per day
to the subscribe address.  Almost all of them were spam.
I most certainly did not "opt-in" with a subscribe address!

When I was publishing to my 1500 legitimate subscribers,
I had a policy that I did not run ads for adult content,
MLM, money-making programs or email list services.
That was my choice, of course - but it was one my
subscribers appreciated. When I re-activate my list, I
will maintain the same policies.

In my opinion, while adult content, MLM, money-making
programs and email list services qualify as "business"
to those involved, not everyone interested in business
discussion is interested in those subjects.  So, I
hand-picked my advertisers.  It is an editor's right to
determine what content they will and will not publish,
and I exercised that right.

I suspect that the complaints you received were in
regard to ads placed by companies featuring those
types of services.  If so, perhaps a solution would
be to ask your subscribers what type of advertising
content they would be receptive to?

Just my two cents.
: )

Subject:Paid subscriptions

Bogdan,

Please don't go ad free and charge for the subscription.

First of all, I will make the assumption that it's a very small percentage
of readers that have complained about ads.   I'll also assume that they
probably would not pay to subscribe to Adland Digest if it were ad free.

As a subscriber, I like to see (some) ads.  I never know when I may run
across a product or service that I need.  But I feel that advertisers who
are advertising in Adland Digest have targeted AD readers with appropriate
products.   Obviously, not all ads will appeal to me. But that's not a
reason to get rid of the advertising.

Being an advertiser myself, I like to see well-written ads and headlines.
It gives me the opportunity to see what works.

A suggestion I have for you is to screen the ads.  As publisher, you don't
have to publish ads that readers find objectionable.

Sincerely,

Glen Palo

Dear Bogdan:
As a subscriber and yours is only one of 3 ezines that I read top to
bottom, I must say the ads don't bother me.  People need to use some common
sense.  I have an ezine myself and accept ads, but I have a disclaimer that
I am not responsible for the content of same.  I would pay for AdLand Digest
if that's the only way I could get it.  But as I said the ads don't bother
me, I have enough sense to overlook the ones I am not interested in and keep
reading.
Some of your subscribers need to get a life if this is their complaint.
You run a good, informative ezine and I wouldn't change a thing....

Subject:Paid subscriptions

Bogdan,

I know you work very hard to keep this newsletter going and you should be
compensated one way or another.  The fact is nothing is absolutely free on
the Internet.  All web sites who came into this arena giving things away free
and offering such huge benefits to get people to come to them have pretty
much found themselves in financial hot water and/or bankruptcy.  I don't mind
the ads, but I would also pay for this subscription if it came to that.
Those who complain about advertising in ezines need a wake up call to the
direction e-commerce is going.  If they got into it to try to make money or
get visitors to their web site (which is most likely the case if they
subscribed to this digest in the first place,) they must realize that "free"
advertising comes with a price - no matter where they advertise!  If they
really don't want the ads, but want this ezine which doesn't put itself
together they should pay for your time and expenses.

Subject:Paid subscriptions

Hi Bogdan

Just received issue #243, You wanted an opinion on advertising, Here it is:

Maybe it is just because I am fairly new to the internet, or maybe I just don't
think the same way some people do, but personally I don't see anything wrong
with you running ads in the Digest.
Lets face it you have to have some way of covering your expenses, it is no
different than a regular printed publication.

I'll go one step farther and say that anyone who thinks you can keep doing this
free forever has had their head buried in the sand long enough to cause some
damage.
What is wrong with these people? You are not twisting their arm and forcing them
to read the ads are you? If it were not for advertising how would we know about
new things that are happening? I have personally gained a great deal of
knowledge
and also gotten some really good deals, that I would not have been aware of had
I not answered an ad.

I personally can't see the difference between an ad here or an ad  in a
magazine, No one is forcing me to read it.

Now having said that, if you feel you must charge a yearly subscription instead
of ads I am OK with that too. I am interested in the information you provide.
You might remind those people who don't want ads that when they subscribe
to an offline magazine they usually have to pay a yearly subscription price AND
get ads.

Actually what bugs me more than the ads are those people who post to the
discussions with very little to say just so they can include a link to their
website, at least the people who buy space are not trying to hide the fact they
are promoting something.

Sincerely
Herb Kuenzl

Bogdan, I hope you keep using the paying sponsors because there is no way I

viable option.  Website 101 Reading List (by Mike Banks Valentine) recently

From:David Weed
Subject:Paid subscriptions

Bogdan,

I, for one am very comfortable with your present set-up for Adland Digest. I
personally feel that you produce a quality ezine and your Ad rates are
reasonable. If you are having difficulty with complaints about Ad content, I
suggest you ad the disclaimer ( Ad content is solely the responsibility of the
Advertiser. Adland Digest makes no endorsement, implied or otherwise by
including an Advertisement in this newsletter. )
It is a shame that people take so little responsibility for their own actions.
No one forces us to read the ads in any ezine. No one forces us to respond to
any ad. No one forces us to make a purchase from the company being advertised.
yet some people think they should get something back from somebody (anybody)
because they failed to protect themselves.
As an ezine publisher myself, I do like to know if an advertiser is a scam or a
rip-off. Any advertiser that gets too many complaints will not be accepted.
There are plenty of folks that want/need to advertise and are just honest
businessmen or women. Keeping your rates within the affordable range will insure
you have all your adspace filled. Maybe, in order to keep your rates low you'll
have to add more ads. You could ad two more sponsorships to the digest without
interfering with the content or presentation, IMHO.
To answer the question... no I would not pay for the Digest. I am smart enough
to chose what ads I will read, respond to and/or buy from. The consequences of
those decisions are mine alone. you need not be concerned that I will hold
someone else responsible for my own mistakes.

Sincerely,
David Weed

Bogdan

I think you are onto the right concept - Simply offer subscribers two options

Option A: Free subscription to the digest - Ads included.
Option B: Paid subscription to the digest - No ads included.

I am one of those who enjoys free - I skim the ads quickly or scroll right on
past them if I don't feel like reading ads.  I don't understand how anyone
can think that ads are "bad" or that the publisher is responsible for the
quality of the ads.  Look at the magazines published in hard-copy.  Every one
of them sells you a paid subscription that includes ads.  And they all print
a disclaimer that says they are not responsible for the honesty or integrity
of the advertisers.  The sales of advertising make many things possible.
Television could not have become a universal medium if it were not "free" to
the viewers.  Advertising paid for the "free" television shows.

Just my humble opinion

Hey Bogdan,

I'm so tired of hearing about people that receive FREE newsletters then complain
about ads running in them!!!  People BUY magazines that are loaded with ads in
them, but when they get a FREE one, then they whine about ads!!!

The online world - mimics the real world - and until these babies grow up and
figure that out and quit complaining - you and I as publishers, and other
publishers have to deal with this ridiculous whining.  How many people purchase
a magazine, see it loaded with ads, call the publisher and complain about it!  I
bet you the answer is ZERO!!!

You should NOT have to alter the way you do your newsletter to make these cry
babies happy!  If these cry babies don't like it they can UNSUBSCRIBE!!!!

Don't buckle to them Bogdan - they are NOT worth it!!!  There are way too many
subscribers out here that understand you need the advertising, and we appreciate
your efforts and the hard work you put in to send us your ezine.  I know how
hard you work, for I myself put in 14 hours a day to keep my ezine going - for
FREE!!!  Fortunately - NONE of my subscribers have ever complained, but I hear
about this with other publishers all the time and it's absurd.

I wish all these whiners would put together an ezine themselves and let them see
the hard work you're doing for FREE and then let them see the monthly costs -
and then they'd probably grow up and see the online world is a real world - and
they'd shut up, and accept their FREE gift and quit looking the gift horse in
the mouth!!

Don't buckle, Bogdan, you're an awesome publisher - and THANK YOU for all the
hard work and the costs you absorb to reach out and help us!!

From:Kathleen VanBeekom
Subject:Interesting new marketing concept...any thoughts?

In response to Kevin Haub about the portal page of 400 merchant links:
MyWildfirePortal is the latest thing to advertise SFI.

What this portal does is get you to sign up for CommissionJunction as a
free affiliate, then your upline in MyWildfirePortal can earn 5% of any sales
you
make thru CommissionJunction, also when you start making sales, your upline
earns $2 because you're then an active affiliate.

Why WOULDN'T MyWildfirePortal want people to upgrade?
Because CommissionJunction is only a 2-tier program, if you DON'T upgrade,
your upline's upline keeps earning 5% from their downline sales of all those
350 to 400 links.

If you DO upgrade, your upline earns the 5% as the 2nd-tier and their upline
doesn't,
every upgrade causes the upper upline to lose money BUT it puts $199 into
the pockets of MyWildfirePortal.  The 5% affiliate sales and $2 from each
active affiliate would ultimately bring in more than $199.

MyWildfirePortal is hoping that they'll absorb a lot of the 2nd-tier
affiliate profits
if most people don't upgrade.

Actually this whole MyWildfirePortal is taking your $199 upgrade cost just to
set up a big link site that you could set up yourself if you know basic HTML
linking code and if you have time & patience.

Imagine how many people they've earned $199 from so far, and how many
$2's they've earned from all those new CommissionJunction affiliate sign-ups,
and all those 5% of affiliate sales from all those 400 links on all those
sites.

The big winner here is whoever is in charge of MyWildfirePortal.
They have 1,000's of people advertising all day while they sit back earn
money.

The one thing they forget to tell you is that YOU need to
ADVERTISE your butt off in order to make any decent money.

What you don't know is costing you money, everyone should learn basic
web design, study everything you can about affiliate programs, and ask
yourself
WHY a big company would do you any "favors" such as building you a site of
400 affiliate links for "only" $199, and ask yourself how many people they're
earning money from, and for what reason?  To make you a site that you could
and should know how to make yourself.

For that $199 price, they should at least offer you some free advertising,
they tell you about how much money you can earn, but they neglect to tell you
it takes tons of advertising to get people to your site, and tons of
follow-up to get them to buy and become repeat customers.  You need to
develop loyalty with customers, not just lead them to a huge link site & hope
they'll buy.

MyWildfirePortal may make a lot of money to start with, but as people become
more knowledgable about marketing and less naive about "making money",
MyWildfirePortal and others like it will need to lower their price or at
least offer to advertise FOR YOU as an incentive.

I'm not saying its a bad thing, the system works and its a reputable company
so far, but what I'm saying is...you need to educate yourself and you need to
know that you'll need to ADVERTISE, you'll need to spend TIME at it.

I meant to respond to your E-mail title suggestion via Adland Digest, but
didn't get to it. However, I have to agree with Lucky Jack, Al Buettner and
Jerry that your suggestion isn't the way to go. As it's deceptive. I got two
E-mails this morning that used it. I opened neither. I have an excellent
memory. So pretty well know whether I've asked for certain info ro not. While
many don't have good memories, it not good to take advantage of that.

The right way to go in E-mail titles to get the potential reader's attention
is the same that Adland and Site Build It! use--include the recipients' first
names in the title. Such as: "Adland Digest #243  Pauline ,would you pay for

I understand there's software that adds first names automatically according
to whatever the E-mail address is. Bogdan should know.

I refuse to accept being attacked this way.

I am just shaking my head at how something can be so totally misunderstood.  I
was simply stating what gets *my* click--In 5 years I have not yet ever found
the need or desire to even use email advertising...or FFA sites or banners for
that matter.

I rely on word of mouth from other businesses, high SE rankings and linking from
other sites.  I gain new business clients every day.  The ones I have stay with
me.  If I were a conman, this would not be the case.  I can assure you I am
neither and I really take offence to being attacked this way...

Bogdan, would you please put in your thoughts on this--after all, if it were
about spam, I am certain you would not have run it as your guest article.

Bogdan,

I'm sure many marketer's know the advantages of
having their own affiliate program with others
selling their products for them.

Most methods of accomplishing this are cost
prohibitive for marketers on a shoestring budget.
The least expensive of the methods is clickbank,
but many marketers are discouraged by how
complicated it can be to set up an account and
especially setting up your thank you page etc.
to meet clickbanks standards.

There's a new ebook out that explains the
whole process from start to finish. It's
called "Working With Clickbank" and it can be
downloaded for free from my site, no strings
attached. The download link is:

=====================Site Review Request  (1)===============
From:Anil Nath
Subject:http://www.searchezee.com/

Hi Bogdan and Adlanders!

I am an old member of your great list, though my last post was a couple of
years age entitled 'Search Engine Nightmare".

Ironically I have just launched, what I think is an innovative search engine
of sorts, called SearchEzee Power Search Engine .  The url is
http://www.searchezee.com/

The objective of SearchEzee is to bring before the surfer the most relevant
results to his or her query with the fewest clicks, with minimum effort and
minimum use of digital space and bandwidth.  Hyperlinking to search
resources and topical resources is accepted.

There is always this lurking question whether this kind of querying is
right.  I have not seen much on this issue over the Internet. I personally
see using query strings instead of hyperlinks in exactly the same vein.
SerarchEzee does not process or manipulate any results pages like many do
nor does it claim partnership or alliance with any of the queried.  This is
clearly mentioned at the bottom of the initial page. This fair by me.

Could you kindly include the above URL for review is one of your issues.  I
am very keen to know how this kind of search is accepted.  I would like to
that it was essential to use frames to achieve the prime objective.  There
is no processing or manipulation of the results generated.

Look forward to responses....
Wishing you all,  the best,

Anil Nath

=====================Site Review Response  (1)===============
From:Steve Hustoft
Subject:http://www.freeflowmarketing.com

I'll start out with the good:

1. The site loads really fast and that is always a good thing.

2. The pages are laid out really well and one thing that is
done really well is making it easy to go from page to page
from wherever I am on the site.

3. I like the fact that the pages are short.  Having long pages
means you have to scroll and while I don't mind it all the time
it can become tiresome when you've been scrolling pages for hours.

4. Lastly I like the fact you have your email address front and
center, but I think you should consider putting a home address or
phone number on your site.  Maybe a phone number to an answering
service so you can control who you talk to.

Now the bad:

1. I don't like the generic headings on the links to your various
pages.

2. You should separate your opportunities a little bit so that
people know that you're done describing one and starting on another.

3. You should make the links to pages outside your site as popups,
because you don't want people leaving before they are done.

One suggestion I have for you is instead of saying bookmark this
site you should give them a link to click that opens the bookmark
box.  I haven't actually done this, but there are many sites with
this feature and it makes it really easy to bookmark a site.
There are several ways to do this and maybe someone can give you
a place to look for this code.

Is the Internet Still Free?
ByJames Pendleton

The title of this article has a lot of meaning. It asked the
question of: "Is the net still free?" Well if one looks around
the net at first glance. I would think the answer would be no!

Everywhere you look there is buy this buy that. E-commerce abounds.
It is also a fact that there are literally millions upon  millions
of dollars being spent right now as your read this article. The
potential is mind boggling. Estimated trillions of dollars to be
spent and made on the net in the up coming years.

Companies and corporations are scrambling to put up functional
e-commerce sites to sell their products. They know if they have a
good product a secure server connection and merchant account to
handle transactions. They are good to go. Their hit counter will
take off and they can take orders and begin shipping their product
and generate revenue.

This is the picture from the view of the big boys. Those
having big money to invest on development. Web design programming,
data base management and all the other aspects of setting up a
good web site. They hire webmasters and programmers to get the job
done. This is how it's done in the most simplest terms.

Well what about the little guy? The mom and pop company that
wants to build a web presence. How about the single individual
that wants to get a foot hold on the web. Having a desire for
a web site. Even of just a personal home page. Or information web
site. Where do they turn? How do they do it?

As They look around at the cost of web design. First they see fees
that are in the hundreds of dollars for just a simple web page.
In the thousands of dollars for complex sites. Then they see more
fees for hosting their web site. The need to pay for a home for their
domain name to be accessed on the web.

I am a domain host myself but still send potential clients to
the free route first! A way for them to get their feet wet before
investing their hard earned money in hosting fees. Why do I do this
and loose a sale? I am a internet surfer of old. I remember the web
the way it was. I exist on the web in the spirit of old. Despite of
having my own presence with full hosting solutions available at
http://jgptophost.com !

Sure everyone pays for hosting sooner or later. It is a must if one is to
actually build a strong presence on the web. However finding free hosting
first is the best for the new comer. It can let you know what you are actually
getting into.

When I got serious about the web after surfing 10 years. I came with
this slogan. If it is not free I do not need it! This mental state paid
off for me big time! Saved me lots of money in to many areas to mention
in this article. If you are new to the web. Remember my slogan.
If it is not free I don't need it. It will pay off for you too in the long run.

Are all the little guys destined to pay? How can this be?
What happened to the internet of old. Starting from a few computers
in some obscure government complex. Then expanding to a few Universities.
Being used to freely share information between computers. Then exploding
into the World Wide Web. Free information and content every where.
Pay? Pay for content? Pay for design? The concept of paying for something
was unheard of back in those days. HTML standards started by
Netscape were not complex. Dry pages of plain text. Friends would
build web pages and sites as a common courtesy. Friends sharing with
friends. :)

Slowly the pioneers of the web and entrepreneurs saw the all mighty
dollar. The web began a rapid growth and change. Turning into
what we have to day. I put the question again. Is it free? My
response. Sure it is! The trick is knowing how to find what is free.
Knowing where to look.

If one can master knowing where to look. One can find free abundant
content and material. Every thing you can imagine is still out
here free on the WWW. The hard part is finding it.

So getting back to what does the little person do when he or she
wants to begin a web site and or presence? Gain a foot hold?
Do they need to pay? I think not!

There is everything you need right  at the tip of your mouse! How to build a
web page or a entire web site. Finding a free home for your web site.
Information
on exactly how html code works or even complex scripts that make a web site
truly interactive and functional. The web abounds with tutorials and training
information. How to market or sell. How to design a site. Even how to write
complex programs and scripts. Many resources that have simple cut and
paste scripts to add functionality.

It is all here right in front of you. The trick is filtering
through all the pay for this and pay for that. Blocking out
all the hype. Focusing in on only what is free. If one can do
that the web is a completely different place. It will almost look
like the internet of old.

Ahh I have you thinking. So you want to know, where do I look?
How do I begin finding all this free stuff you talk about?
Why at http://freebonanza.com ! That is where you begin. A truly
wonderful directory managed buy Human Guides! Each reviewing web sites
by hand to ensure good quality content. A fully searchable
directory which gives excellent returns on queries. Not the
over bloated 2 million web pages like the large search engines.

Are you ready for a treat? Look for this ezine. Tell your friends
about it. They will thank you for it later. This ezine
will you up to date on what's new at http://freebonanza.com.
