John,
You said:
"I do not agree with Robert this time (he does have a lot of great info
he has shared here though that I like reading and do agree with) that a
conformation letter sent in response to a post to a ffa site you host
constitutes a spamming ffa site. however abuse of these systems do. I
hope what I tried to say will now be clear."

My main complaint is that most FFA pages ARE abused. If you want to
generate traffic to your web site using a FFA page, you would be better
off using one that does not spam people back. This FFA page does NOT ask
for your email address, so it is not there to be harvested by robots or
any other extraction program that finds your FFA page. This should build
confidence in the people that post to your FFA page and those that visit
it for links to other sites.

I hope that this clarifies what I asked and said about this FFA program
that I am trying out

Subject:FFA sites

Hi Adlandpro ezine readers,

Like many, I joined ffanet and bought into a FFA
page. Its better to host one and send out your responses
then to post to these such sites. I never got good responses
from FFA postings. I've sort of been playing around the
net and marketing fro over 2 years now. I've made small
amounts of CASH but its cost me alot more setting
up and buying into other peoples visions.
I've now set up a advertising site to offer what people
pay for. None of this impression purchasing but
you buy actual clicks on banner, not via forced popups,
startpages, or other methods employed out there
to display your ad and rid you of your advertising budget.
But not only that you can POST YOU TEST AD FOR
FREE and its rotated for 1 solid week and shows
Stats even on the total free sections. I don't get huge
traffic like adlandpro but since march I've got 30,000
visitors and various people have visited and clicked
on members banners and LINKs.
No catches you don't get spammed, can use your
standard email address. I only post a monthly
ezine to remind members and free visitors to come back and visit. Well enough
said come and visit and check out for yourself.

Dear all,
Ever since I started doing business on the Internet, I have been
receiving lots of emails that try to sell me something.
These emails also claim that they are not spam. Specifically, they claim
that they cannot be
construed as spam because they fulfill the following:
Under Bill s.1618 TITLE III passed by the 105th US Congress this letter
cannot be considered Spam as long as the sender includes contact
information & a method of "removal".
END QUOTE
Valerie,
If I remember correctly, this was a bill before Congress, but was not
passed into law.
Spammers still have NO legal ground to stand on and many states are also
in the midst of tying spammers hands even more.

Delete them immediately.  They're not anyone

false, too.  There's no such law.  You have to be
believable on the internet if you want any chance

Don't even reply to those nitwits, because then,
even though you replied *remove*, you are on

In relation Valerie's post Spam or not Spam?

I always delete all of these emails, they are out and out Spam. I did not read
anything about when the US Government or any US agency bought and controlled the
world and everything in it.  I do not live in the US nor am I a US citizen and
as such do come under the jurisdiction of and do not care about any bills or

It may be better for all when these US spammers realise the world extends beyond

Hi Val,

Pronger's rules regarding Spam:

1) Any email that starts "This is not Spam" usually is.

2) Any email that tries to explain to me why it isn't Spam by referring to some
US bill that apparently never passed anyway, definitely is Spam.

3) EVERY piece of Spam I receive is reported to Spamcop -
http://www.spamcop.net - who will trace the source with a few button clicks and
send a report to the spammer's ISP and email provider.

4) Removal requests are a complete waste of time. Don't bother. Just report to
Spamcop.

From:Melody Vargas
Subject:Spam or not Spam?

In Issue #255, Valerie Tay asks about S.618 and claims
that unsolicited commercial emails sent with the disclaimer
are not really SPAM:

::Under Bill s.1618 TITLE III passed by the 105th US
::Congress this letter cannot be considered Spam as
::long as the sender includes contact information & a
::method of "removal".

I actually have a filter set up to trash any message that arrives
in my inbox citing S.1618.  I had to fish AdLand out of the trash
bin this week because the filter works so well.

S.1618 is an actual Senate Bill sponsored by John McCain.  It
was introduced Feb. 1998 and the last major action taken on the
Bill was in Oct. 1998, when it was referred to House Subcommittee
on Telecommunications, Trade, and Consumer Protection, where
it remains today.

The main purpose of the bill is to protect consumers against
"slamming" by telecom carriers.  One of the other purposes is
to give consumers a way to be removed from SPAM lists.
The applicable SPAM section of the Bill is rarely conformed with:

::Title III: Spamming - Requires a person who transmits an
::unsolicited commercial electronic mail message to include at
::the beginning of the body of the message: (1) the name, physical
::address, electronic mail address, and telephone number of the
::person who initiates transmission of the message or who created
::the content of it; and (2) a statement that further transmissions of
::such mail to the recipient by the person may be stopped at no
::cost to the recipient by sending a reply to the originating electronic
::mail address with the word "remove" in the subject line.

Ever receive a piece of SPAM citing S.1618 with the sender's name,
phone and address on it?  I haven't.  In addition, it the Bill does not
state that the email isn't Spamming, only what Spammers need to
do to be in compliance.

Does failure to completely follow the full instructions on this make
the emails illegal?  No, it doesn't.

Why? Because S. 1618 isn't a law.  It is only a Bill, still in
Committee in the House.  There isn't any join resolution between
the House and Senate and there isn't an official law.

Spammers latched on to the "useful" portion of the Bill to make
them appear more legitimate.  It only makes them less professional
in my opinion, because not only are they citing something they
don't understand, they aren't even following its guidelines.

Just keep deleting them.

For more information on S. 1618, or other legislation, visit Thomas
at http://thomas.loc.gov/ . If you look up S. 1618, remember to go
back to the 105th Congress.

Melody Vargas

From:Tom Northrop
Subject:Spam or not Spam?

Hello Valerie

When you see a disclaimer on a piece of spam you have been spammed by a rookie.
Professional spammers do not use disclaimers because it just draws attention to
the
fact that the spam is indeed spam.

Just out of curiosity I went to a government website one time and read the law
in question. As with many laws this law was written to cover a wide base of
subjects including faxes. I suppose a good lawyer could twist the thing around
enough to get a spammer off the hook.

So what can you do about it? Well how much time do you
have to waste? Your options are to simply delete it, which
takes about a half a second or report it to one of the spam cop type groups now
cruising the internet on their misguided crusade to rid the internet of evil.
This takes anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes depending on
how talented the spammer is at hiding their real information.

Personally I just delete them and use filters to get rid of most. Of course I am
not the type of person who gets his kicks out of claiming kills, closing down
websites, or just trying to get people in trouble. Although I have considered
trying to get rid of some of my competitors who are using spam to promote
their businesses, which may label me as a little bit mean minded. I do not think
it would be worth the effort because they would be back up and running with
another ISP in a matter of minutes.
People who depend on spam to make a living always have a backup ISP.

So in my humble opinion (which is not shared by some of
the members of this list) why bother with spammers. It is
so easy just to hit the delete key.

I have moved my sites a couple of times, as traffic grew so did the

They have great hosting plans and have the added bonus of NO additional
bandwidth charges. This works quite well, with my humour site
http://www.robrob8.com exceeding 23 Gigabytes of traffic in July. Go and
take a look at your plans and see if you may end up paying much extra
once the visits to your websites begin to soar! After all, we are trying
to increase traffic, to increase sales - but what happens if the hosting
fees grow astronomically as well?

Bogdan and all Adlanders

I must start with the point that if you need to be seen then there is only one
place and it works believe you me. I asked for a site revue some months back and
my counter went made, I tried other free marketing places with very little
results so there is only one place to be seen and that is on this site.

The next point that I must make and this one was a very hard lesson and bitter
pill to swallow. I had to renew my website and the bucks where not there, I left
it to the last and move to a host that I could afford, but this cost me from 50
visitors a day to 3. Now that was hard and I will not do that again.

Reading the point of FREE or CHEAP hosting sites I must say that this is not
totally true, I have found a site that is working for me and the person that
owns the hosting site is a STAR. His name is Eddie Jones and this man will walk

iNetStar's high speed domain web hosting has all the great

I think you should look at it. Here is the url:

http://www.roibot.com/w.cgi?R17147_is

You could choose from the following meg size accounts
for a variety of prices starting at $9.95:

20 megs, 50 megs, 100 megs, 250 megs, 500 megs and 1000 megs.

They have also the UNLIMITED megs account with a
Pro Package for only $29.95.
This Pro Package include also a subscription to a very good

From:John Yarrow
Subject:Web hosts

Hi again all, just read your newest letter and was compelled to reply
because of  a recommendations somebody sent in regarding the
hostsave.com system.  I used this system for over two years and can tell
you from experience a couple of things I think is important for the
group.

If you know how to write html or use front page and keep the duplicate
files on your computer and understand how to change your server without
help and do not want any support and do not want to spend much money
then hostsave is for you.  Unlike the post on your letter I had sent
many request and questions to hostsave and only about half of them ever
got answered, eventually.  There hard drive (singular) crashed during
that period and I had to completely rebuild my mall.  If you went to my
domain at that time all you saw was some stupid thing about a new site.
I sent them questions about inconsistencies with webulizers stats and
asked them specific questions as to why.   All they did is send me the
standard instructions said the stats were from the server logs and could
not be wrong and sent instructions that did not even relate to my
question giving me the feeling they did not even read it.  They have no
phone support of course for the 6.99 hosting fee.

I stayed with them for quite a while because they were cheap and I did
not really want the hassle of changing.  The straw that brook the camels
back is when a friend said that my mall was not there and my e-mail
stopped working both at the same time.  I went to the site and got some
weird thing on the screen not my mall.

Up to this time and for the 2 years or so I hosted with them they would
send me a notice ahead of time stating that my account was up for the
three month renewal and x amount was due.  Well this time no notice, I
went to the control panel  and it said account inactive.  A day later I
got 4 e-mails, two informing me my account was due to renew and two
saying there were problems with my credit card (it had expired and I
needed to enter an new one) in addition to many e-mail problems no
support and frequent down time I decided this was the time to transfer
to a host I had affiliated with that actually had phone support and with
my commission was the same amount of money.  My site was back up in 24
hours (I know what I am doing finally)

This does not end the story.  About two months later I receive an e-mail
telling me that my account is up for renewal and I needed to give them
updated info......well I sent them quite a letter telling them I no
longer hosted with there company and were I thought they should go
(being relieved of not dealing with them any longer).  To my surprise I
actually got a letter back stating that my account was still active (all
the while my mall was operating from another ip address) and to cancel I
needed to send them additional information regarding my pass code etc.
etc.  After a couple of letters from them I finally sent them the
information they asked for so they would not keep harassing me even
though I had no obligation what so ever to do so. I finally figured I
was done with them.  This does not even finish the story as of this
month they again sent me a letter thanking me for my continued support
and reminding me to update my billing information's for the upcoming
months renewal (I paid every three months).

In conclusion and in my opinion after using there system for two years,
the only thing hostsave offers is they have been in business for a while
and they are cheap.  There control panel works relatively well and I
believe them to be honest.  However unless you know exactly what you are
doing or use your site for business hostsave is not for you!!!!

I do now offer web hosting  (through an affiliate)  In addition if you
spend the 14.99 a month for my affiliated services I will go to bat for
you and actually design and offer support personally for small to medium
size sites.  I also keep a copy of your site and can recover it if it is
lost for some unforeseen reason.  I have an actual phone number and
address and write strait html.  I will not give the direct url for the
service here however if you want to visit my mall at
http://johns-mall.com anybody can check it out by clicking on the link
for web hosting.

Thanks again for the great newsletter and the ear

Subject:Safelists in general are useless???

Hi Adlanders,

In issue #254 Valerie mentioned that safelists in
general are useless - I disagree, safelists are the
next best way to advertise after ezines and not as
costly. In order to get sales you need more than 1
safelist and I have found quite a few lists that have
been very productive for me. I spend about a half an
hour a day submitting my ads to 50 of my top web based
safelists that I belong to everyday. This turns out
about 150 hits a day to my website
http://www.linkcounter.com/go.php?linkid=141297 and
yes I do get sales. I average around $500+ per month
from safelist advertising and my sites hosted on a
freeserver(who says you cant make money with a free
hosted website!) Although it costs to join most lists
they do offer referral commissions, it usually only
takes 2 or 3 referrals to make up for the cost(my cost
per hit becomes $0.00) and these are easy to get
especially with free listservers like Listbot and
Globelists to name a few shutting down. Even Yahoo
Groups in the last couple of weeks has deleted a pile
of Business Groups.

If you've ever belonged to a webbased safelist have a
look at who you are receiving ads from, there are
quite a few familiar names and Heavy Hitters on these
lists and for a reason - they do work!

Basically it boils down to the same old saying - If
you don't have a Good Headline and Sales Letter you
don't get results.

Many safelists offer Free trial memberships, if you
track your ads you'll be able to decide for yourself
whether or not to subscribe as a pro. Many safelists
also offer Free banner impressions, free ebooks, and
free software downloads and lots of other goodies for
their members, some are quite well worth the
membership cost.

I have listed on my website some of the best
responsive lists available.

http://www.linkcounter.com/go.php?linkid=141297

With the surprise success of my free hosted site I
will soon be moving to my own server!

Good Luck and Success to you all,
Brian Dew

pop-ups until recently.  I came across a site that only had one
pop-up on its beginning page and that was it.

Light bulb went off in my head.  I have a site where my index
page talks about my "Art & Book Club" but I was a little
concerned people would not go further into my site where I have
free fiction and non-fiction ebooks, free articles with great
content and four pages of useful links .

Since I believe "sharing is the key to all our success," I
wanted them to know my site had more than just my product since
I don't have a splash page.  But how to make them aware of this
was a problem I hadn't overcome until I saw the pop-up window.

My pop-up is a little different in that I tell people "I know
it is a pain in the tush" but since I've had it up, my logs
show people have gone further into my site at
http://www.agoodread.com and my free ebook downloads have
jumped from an average of 40 per day to over 80 per day.  My
point -- the popup worked.

So if you use the popup judiciously, it can help point people
to what you feel is important on your site.

The truth about Pop-Up windows is that they are very
effective. Some pop-ups are used to advertise a
product and I would agree that this can be annoying.
It's still better than receiving spam e-mails. The
second category of pop-ups are used to offer you a
free e-book, a free newsletter or a free course. I
don't think that there is anything wrong with the fact
that someone is willing to offer you something for
free and that eventually could help you. Bottom line
pop-ups are now part of the Internet and we have to
accept them.

Hello, Everybody! My name is Denise. I have been reading Adland Pro for
about 2 years now. I love it! I've learned a lot. My question is this: I
just became a member of Six Figure Income.  What have
you done to sponsor recruits? I've given up on FFAs and Safelists. I
have been advertising in Ezines, but I'm not receiving any responses.
The same with Classified Ads. No responses. Does anybody have any sound
advertising advise? I know the program works, but how do you write
affective advertising ads that people will respond to? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Denise

All About Search Engines
ByAnil Nath

Hello Bogdan and fellow Adlanders,

I have put together a synopsis of my work on 'searching the Internet' and
'how to draw information in a more efficient manner'. This is not meant to
be a writing of authority. Most of it is a result of what I found after a
close study of the complete range of search tools available.  The result was
a creation of my own...

So here goes...

The mammoth amount of useful information available over the Internet is
difficult to describe using conventional terminology.

Are we utilising this almost infinite resource of information to our best
advantage?  To be able to search quickly and effectively, it is important to
get some background about search tools and the different alternatives
available.

With the Internet growing at such a rapid pace, it is not practical to keep
track of the latest on a day-to-day basis.  There would be a few who don't
use the Internet to seek some kind of information on a daily basis.  To do
this we use  search engines.  How good is our choice?

What are the broad types of search tools available?

Crawler-Based Search Engines
Crawler-based search engines, such as HotBot, create their listings
automatically. They "crawl" or "spider" the sites submitted to them, then
people search through what they have indexed.  If the content on an indexed
web page changes, crawler-based search engines find and update these changes
every 15 - 45 days.

Human-Powered Directories
A human-powered directory, such as Dmoz http://www.dmoz.org/ , depend on
human reviewing and listing. Human editors review and index sites submitted
to them. Changes in listed sites are not automatically updated, as there is
no automatic crawling procedure like search engines have.

"Hybrid Search Engines" Or " Mixed Results Engines"
In the web's early days, a search engine either presented crawler-based
results or human-powered listings. Today, it is extremely common to find an
amalgamation of both. e.g. Yahoo http://www.yagoo.com/ and Google
http://www.google.com/ . Usually, a hybrid search engine will favour one
type of listings over another. For example, Yahoo is more likely to present
human-powered listings and Google its crawled listings.

Meta Search Engines
Meta search tools send your query to multiple search engines and present the
first 10 - 30 results from each on a consolidated and formatted results
page.

Unified Search Tools
Unified search tools query a number of search engines one at a time from a
single window.  The advantage of using this type of search tool is that you
get the complete range of results form each search engine you query.  These
tools are updated with the latest search engines on a regular basis. (You
must remember that Meta search tools on the other hand only present the
first few results of all the queried search engines. This is a drawback
since, the first 10 - 20 results may not have what you are looking for.)

Browser Search Bars
Browser search bars are browser add-ons to enhance the browser's search
capability.

Drawbacks Of Search Engines
Not up-to-date in their indexes.  Search engines update their records once
in 15 -40 days.  Directories only update when sites are resubmitted to them
and have no automated system of updating their databases.

Surfer has to make intelligent queries to find the right results quickly.

May contain dead links of sites which no longer exist.

1,000 common queries account for well over 10% of all search engine usage.
Some engines present cached results to save time, as against referring to
the index and compiling unique results.

Some directories like Yahoo have a directory structure which needs to be
more intuitive.  Surprisingly Yahoo still has to its credit, 60 - 70% of the
market share!

Some search engines sell the top spots for keywords.

My Observations
I have closely monitored search engines, directories, meta search engines
and other search tools for some time. Listed below are samples of my
findings....

Only about 16% of the resources on the Internet have been indexed by search
engines.

The most popular search tools used by the browsing community are not always
the best or the most effective.

For effective searching, one search engine may not be enough.

A meta search engine has many drawbacks when used as a primary search tool.
It is however effective as a supplementary search tool.

Yahoo is not the best place to search in a hurry.  It has a good database of
sites but its searchability is poor because they don't index page meta
information.  One needs to browse through the category tree, which is far
from intuitive and the arrangement is a point of hot discussion.

What Is The Solution For Effective Internet Searching?

A multi-pronged search strategy for searching the Internet is the preferred
solution.

1) First try your query on one of the good general search engines.  The most
widely acclaimed search engine today is undoubtedly Google.
http://www.google.com/  Google uses a smart algorithm to analyse your query
and its results are so relevant, that it's almost uncanny.  Another upcoming
general search to use engine to watch is Teoma. http://www.teoma.com/

Arrange your query well
(Please Note: most search engines have variations of the advanced query
syntax.  You should go to the help page or the advanced search page for the
exact format.  The examples below only illustrate what the possibilities
are.)

Queries can be single words, multiple words or phrases.
e.g   photos
e.g. photo editing
e.g  "free photo editing online"

Queries can be a combination of a single word and a phrases or two or more
phrases
e.g  examples+"photo editing"
e.g. "photo editing"+"photo galleries"
e.g. "Britney Spears"+"official site"

Names of people should be in upper / lower case and in double quotes
e.g. "Britney Spears"

Phrases should be enclosed in double quotes which would give you an exact
match in the results.
e.g. "puppet on a string"
e.g. "where eagles dare"
e.g. "fair is foul and foul is fair"

There is something known as Boolean logic which helps to narrow down the
results of your query. There are three main Boolean operators / connectors:
AND OR NOT.
AND example (replaced by + in certain engines)
Query = John AND Brown ---- gives you results about all the Johns and all
the Browns

OR example
Query = equations OR equasions  ---- Finds results for both words
individually
This is best used when you are not sure of the right spelling.

NOT
Excludes the part after NOT in the results.
e.g.  cricket NOT India

Try the following on http://www.google.com/ as an experiment.
(The syntax used below can be used in many popular search engines)

"photo editing software"+free+downloads
"free photo editing online"
"+jpg"
"*jpg"
"car+jpg"+"trucks"
"formula1"+Ralph+photos
"+car+.jpg"

2) Next try an Internet 'hybrid like Yahoo http://www.yahoo.com/ or
directory like Dmoz http://www.dmoz.org/  Your query should be a broad term
under which your actual search word / phrase would fall.  This would
generate some direct results and some categories and sub categories which
you should browse to find exactly what you are looking for.

Yahoo and Dmoz both offer on their home pages, a tree of categories which
can be browsed.  This is not an efficient way of searching on Directories as
the hierarchy of listings is difficult to relate to.  Searching Yahoo by
querying with very specific keywords produces unsatisfactory results.

3) If the information required is not easily found in step 1 and 2, there is
another breed of tools dedicated to searching the Internet in a very
effective manner  and they are particularly suited to the needs of
researching students.  (where research implies a student looking for
specific information in an area of high speciality) We may call these tools
"other search tools".

These browser based search tools use, what I call 'query string linking' as
against hyper-linking to many search resources, arranged in categories.  The
surfer enters the query in the search field and selects a resource to
search, to directly reach the search results without going to the home page
of that particular resource.  The search resources queried by these search
tools include general search engines, subject specific search engines, and
searchable subjects specific sites.

These search tools also referred to as unified search tools or all in one
are only found if specifically searched for, since they are not promoted by
big corporates and cannot afford massive advertising budgets required for
better visibility through real world media and Internet advertising.  These
search tools could turn out to be the most effective additions to the surfer
or research student's search tool set . One such search tool is:

Search Ezee Power Search Engine
http://www.searchezee.com/

SearchEzee queries over 200 of the top search engines, meta search engines,
directories and topical resources, in an easy to use interface. The search
engines are arranged in the following categories or engine sets:

General
Country Specific
English Language Ref
Language Translators
Freeware / Software
Photos, Encyclopedias
Topical Ref
Medical Ref
Computers & IT
News & Sports,
Law
Music - Video
Kids - Learning,  Personal

Please excuse the length of this writing.  I find this topic quite
fascinating. I would love to hear a different point of view or about
something I may have misrepresented.

With warm regards to all,

Anil Nath

=====================Joke of the Day   (1)===============

At the end of the workday, one cowboy tells another, "That
new bull nearly did me in today, partner."

"Oh yeah, what happened?"

"I was putting out the feed, when the sucker came charging at
me like a locomotive from hell. He damn near got me!"

"So, how'd you get away?"

"Well the bull kept slipping. He slipped three times, and that
gave me a chance to make it to the fence and jump over."

"Man, that's scary. If it'd been me, I would probably have shit
all over the place."

"I DID! What do you think the bull was slipping on?"
