Sherrie,

By getting your web site "out there" I gather you mean marketing and getting
visitors to it. But, before you consider doing any marketing you need to ensure
your web site is up to the task i.e. it's going to get the sale. It looks like
you're using a WYSIWYG editor to create your site. Nothing wrong with that, I
use one myself. You don't need to be a HTML guru or use expensive high-end
editors like Dreamweaver to get good results. But, whatever tool you use, your
site has to look professional and follow good design and navigation rules. To do
that, you need to have a good understanding of the tool you are using. If I
could make a few suggestions for your site:

* Black is out. Take a look at any of the big name, successful sales sites like
Amazon and you won't see black backgounds.

* The two images on the home page seem to serve no purpose other than to force a
horizontal scroll bar to come up in 800 X 600. They are also clickable, which
means that when a visitor clicks on them they will expect to be taken somewhere,
rather than just have the same image open in a new window, which is what happens
now.

* Each page should have the same layout and design, and navigation links should
be at the top or left side of your page and not just at the bottom.

* The are no meta keywords or description tags in your code. This isn't so
important for the keyword tags (many search engines place little value on them
or ignore them altogether these days), as long as your most important keywords
appear in your page title, description and body text. At the moment, if your
site showed up in search engine results its description would read "Enter a
brief description of your site here". What sort of message do you think your
potential visitor gets when they read that?

* I'm sure Bogdan appreciates the link to Adland Pro, but if you are going to
link to other sites you should join their affiliate program, if they have one
(Adland does), and that way you'll earn a commission on any sales generated for
that site. What good does the link to Sleepyshopper do, other than to send
visitors away from your site? Make your external links open in a new window and
your visitors will stay onsite.

I've really just scratched the surface here Sherrie. There is much work to be
done before you even think about marketing your site. If you want a good
resource for building a successful web site there is none better than Ken Evoy's
"Make Your Site Sell" - see http://myss.sitesell.com/ozbiz.html. Follow Ken's
advice and you can't help but succeed.

Cheers

From: Nick Heynderickx
Subject:New Business

Thank you, Bogdan and hello, Sherrie:

In a new discussion you pointed us to your business site,
http://www.northernbeautysource.ws .  You asked for input on
inexpensive ways to promote your business.  I like that on your
site you have made it easy to get more information about your
products.

As a suggestion, if you are willing to put in a little "elbow
grease", one way you can promote your business is by using page
exchanges.  I have noted page exchanges (you view sites and in
return others view your site) are not too well received here at
adland.  But then again, after countless hours of clicking I
would wager most folks are trying to serve up much more than
most folks are able to chew in the few seconds allotted them for
their page to be viewed.

In truth, page exchanges are more like trading "glances"
instead of "views".  With that in mind I took the liberty of
extracting from your site what I found, for me, to be the most
enticing nugget of gold you have to offer and turned it into a,
"micro-ad".

  You can find it at
http://www.webtraffictools.com/servlet/HitCounter?c=59505904 .
Note that it is on a "freeserver" and therefore has a banner at
the top of the page.  Although that banner is a nuisance it actually
mimics the page exchange's own top banners.  I affectionately call
it, "page noise".   Unfortunately, that noise, whether from
freeservers or from the page exchanges, cannot be avoided.

Anyway, this micro-ad is about 30 kilobytes so it loads quickly
and won't drain too much bandwith from your hostserver.  Your
"micro-ad" has one purpose and that is to pull requests for
more information.  (You can also save bandwidth and keep page
exchangers happily on the move by having an auto-responder do
your follow-up for you.  There are many, many free ones.)

If the selling proposition ("secret to saving on salon
products") suits your fancy you could then either alter your
main page to sell from that angle or you could actually create
a small mini-page that convinces people to order your free
catalog.

Page exchanges are free.  Creating your own "micro-ad" albeit
without animation can be done using an html editor.  Depending
on how much you are willing to do your "clicking", Sherrie, you
would definitely be getting the word out about your business.

Of course, in the spirit of the season, and because I very much
enjoy seeing all the help offered by others here at adland I am
willing to donate this micro-ad to help your business.

Just create a simple "report" on how using your services will
save people a lot of money buying their salon products and put
it on an auto-responder. (You can then also use other
advertising for the "free report"!) I'll forward the micro-ad
to you complete with all my down and dirty methods for getting
the most from page exchanges.  Simply upload the ad to your
server and point the page exchanges to it.

If you decide to give this a shot, maybe you can report back
here to adland what your experiences are.  Who knows, maybe
other adlanders will be persuaded to have some fun using page
exchanges too! <smile>

  God bless you all.

It is correct that PayPal allows you to have an International
Account, I have had one and live in the UK.

What is not generally known is that you as an International
Member do not get the $5 referral and most important is
that you cannot transfer funds to your Bank outside the USA.

Thus the PayPal account is only for 'buying' not 'spending'.

this is in reply to John Yarrow's post #267

John that certainly is a good idea, and I have used StartBlaze amongst
others ( there are quite a number of them and I have tried many ) StartBlaze is
one of the best, but the one that I believe stands out from the pack at present
is ViralVisiters,it has been in prelaunch and hit the road running a few days
ago.

Of course its free to use,but its real beauty lies in the fact that being so
new people are flocking to it in droves. Now the big bonus here is Doug will give
every new member 250 free hits to their site ( this is very important ).

Whilst I'm at it I would like to thank all the people who signed up to
ViralVisiters from Adlands when I posted some time back, and to Bogdan for such a
wonderful resources.

John getting back to your idea I say go for it,but do yourself a big favour
and examine ViralVisiters first.Unfortunately I have to refer you through my
link ( makes me feel guilty ),but I wouldn't care who's it was so long as you
get the best resourse.

Reply to Adriana: ABCGifts&Baskets.com

Yes, a separate links page will help you
if you make it clear to the Engines that
it is 'themed' -  e.g.  "Gifts and Baskets
links page"    as the title, and again as a
big heading.....  and the text links on the
page should use your main Keywords -
same as in your meta tags. (Both for the
homepage and the links page.)

Remember 'Link Popularity' is scored a
lot stronger for INBOUND links from like-
themed, 'popular' or 'important' sites, so
you'll have to beg other webmasters to
link to your site! But your links page will
help you if it's true, relevant/optimized
to your Keywords.  (You can learn a lot
from David Notestine of :
Zeus - http://cyber-robotics.com     )
- about building link directories.

Adriana- I spent hours on Brainfox too!
It did bring me thousands of hits, but
finally I've learned to use the more
heavily-trafficked PPCs, like 'FindWhat'
and 'Kanoodle.'  I'm enjoying my bids &
gambling there, but 'Overture' (goto.com)
is too pricey for me..  I would not Profit
much there...

If you decide to sell an eBook or 'an
instant download digital product'  on your
site.....I'd say put it on the Homepage, or
make another, separate page for it,
linked by text from the home page. If it
is likely to make you a profit - flaunt it for
attention. That's our digital bizniz.  Or it
could be used as a free promotional
give-away.  I agree about optimizing your
.jpg's ; fast-loading pages work best in
our Instant World.  (Pssst.. tell Bogdan
his AdlandPro.com takes 'light years' to
arrive in the red dust of south-western
Australia!!)

I agree. It's hard enough to make money from a dot.com website without being
bogged down with a freebe one! Nowadays search engines and directories worth
mentioning generally no longer add freebee commercial sites to their indexes.

I also agree one needs a respected website host like
http://www.sitesell.com/globesales.html . I use it myself. And Google.com
directory indexed my site without me applying for it! So now my site is
accessible from Yahoo, Alta Vista, AOL and some other important search engines

I would like to thank Andy, Kent, Brendan, and Andre for
responding to my request for a site review. I will take Andy
and Brendan's advice and register Wealth-Happens.com
domain name for my site. I can also see by most of the responses
that the next thing I should do is get off the free host.
This makes perfect sense and I did plan to do that
eventually, I was just testing everything out on the free host first.

Also, Kent's suggestion about finding a 'niche' market is
excellent, since there is so much competition in this area. I will
follow his and Andy's advice and do what I do best. I am now
offering proofreading/editing/writing services (since that's what
I do in my day job) and the M.B.A. training course (since that's
what I did in my previous day job). I am also publishing an Ezine
with FREE ads for new subscribers. The first issue goes out 12/1/01.

I have a question for Andre. Will I be able to move my free
site to a paid host without having to redo the whole thing? It was
so easy to create on Tripod but I hate the thought of having to do it
all over again.

Thanks again to all of you and to all who e-mailed me
privately. I appreciate the feedback.

Subject:The Opus of Terror!

Dear Bogdan and Adlanders,

Greetings of Peace!

And thanks Andrew for the comment. You're right, it is
very hard to do business on the net without a credit
card. But who sez' you can't do without it. I was able
to get into a small business and if you'd like to see
the proof it's there for you to evaluate (email me and
I'll send you the links) and some other business
opportunities that I am in right now and that I paid
for them through Money Order, I see no problem.

I hope that members of this discussion group will not
go astray from the principles of democracy
(freedom, liberty, independence, etc.). Brother John
(Doe? issue#265) warned, 'You people need to be very
careful about how you trash someone or some company in
a public forum'. It is in this principle John that I
believe Paypal employed when they opted not to
transact/conduct business/es from where we are
(geographically).

It is also based on this principle that we heard a cry
from our friend... Bryan Marsden (issue#263). He
invoked his freedom to cry out his disgust over the
actions of these companies and it is his right. Nobody
can stop anybody on airing his complaint, in any
medium he sees favorable or accessible to him, and
Adland is a good channel.

I don't want to spur public distrust on a company or
its name and I do believe Bryan do as well. As for my
side, I just took the 'moment' to introduce an
alternative service available to (net) entrepreneurs
specially to people outside of the US, of course some
referral points :)
As a matter of fact this service also accepts payment
through Paypal
accounts.
http://www.energyflow.com/payment/default.cfm?ReferredBy=32822

I don't see why some of our friends got so agitated
about the issue. As I see it... and in my personal
view, 'terror' is really working in our midst now!
Taking its toll, dividing us into two different
worlds.
Businesses slowing down, economies falling, inflation
rates skyrocketing and unemployment rates surging.
Thrust on individuals and business deals... waning!
Don't you see? It's working and slowly winning! I hope
we don't succumb to the opus of "terror" and plop into
the abyss of defeat.

Kindest Regards,

Isidoro Siose, Jr.

Did any of our readers try StartBlaze a while ago ?

It was a free traffic generating system whereby
you configured your browser so that you would
receive a different start up page each time you
opened it. Each access would earn you 'credits'
so that others would see your own designated page
when they opened their browser.

I tried it out but began to find it frustrating
having to wait for a web page to pop up every time
I opened my browser.

The creator of StartBlaze, Mark Joyner of Aesop
has now come up with a new idea, ExitBlaze, which
seems far superior.

It works by getting you traffic from everyone who
leaves your web site using an exit pop up. You
simply add a 5 line script to your page.

I'm normally wary about these kind of systems but
early reports from neutral marketers are indicating
that it is certainly achieving a big traffic surge
for them.

So I decided that for a few minutes work it's
worth giving it a try. As you can also earn credits
from those you sign up, and so on, you may also like
to try it out right now and get a headstart on the
others - it's only been out for a few days.

Here's the sign up page

Greetings Bogdan and Readers of Adland Digest,

I have been a member of Adland Pro for quite some
time.  I find the information contained in Adland
Digest very helpful and, of all the Ezines I receive,
it is one of the very best.

I would like to request a site review.
http://partners.eznetflash.net  )  I am a Founding
member of this MLM company and I would like to
know if this flash site, which explains the benefits
of signing up as an independent contractor to sell
the product, is enticing to net entrepreneurs.  The
opportunity is focused mainly towards seasoned
network marketers and those wanting to provide flash
websites and flash tools to their clients.  Thus the
input from the readers of Adland Digest would be very
 valuable to me.

I would like to know:  Is the content "meaty" enough?
Does it explain the opportunity well?  Are the tools
offered exciting enough to encourage sign up?... such
as the ability to create TV quality commercials to
FlashCast via email or download on to a floppy disk
and hand out as business cards.

Your comments are greatly appreciated.  And again, I
am grateful to be a member of the Adland Digest
community and enjoy the wealth of information
provided.

Thank you,

site monitoring.

The banners on your site, have nothing to do with your
subject and distract people.

Why would you be cheap and do not want to pay for a
more professional website and host it with a reliable
company?

If you are serious that's what you will do. If not
this website won't bring you much as a business
standpoint, and people will know that you are not
serious.

Look at your competition and try to do the same. If
you do not want to pay someone to design it just but
Frontpage for less than $150 and build it yourself.

I like the color of the site and getting around was easy but what is up with the
bright yellow and white banner near the top?  I know that sense you are on
tripod you have to have the other banner but why take away from the site more by
adding that banner, if you must have it put it at the bottom.  Speaking of the
bottom why do you have so much space there?  I only shutter to think why.

Hi Chef Brian, Your site looks good for a first effort. The navigation is easy
to follow and the colors you are using are easy on the eyes.

I think that one thing you'll maybe want to change is adding links to pages in
the text when you talk about it.
For instance, the page
http://awesome-chef-recipes.tripod.com/chefs-store.htm
That is for your store, talks about the "All things guy" buffet. But all there
is a button link on the side panel. Why not a text link in the paragraph as
well?

Just "food-for-thought!
(Sorry, I couldn't resist!)

Adriana,

Ernie is definitely correct when he stated that your home page should download
in a very minimal time compared to your other pages.  Anywhere between 20-40K
bytes is OK depending on how you go about it.  Here are some options you may
want to consider:

1)  open your images in a graphics program such as PhotoShop and you can
optimize them, dramatically reducing the file sizes without disturbing the
quality (as long as you compress them correctly--read that section in the user
guide.)

2)  I there is a large image that you simply must have on your home page and you
cannot reduce the file size enough by optimizing it, you can slice the image so
that it loads one section at a time.  This is helpful because it slowly gives
the viewer something to look at while the image loads, rather than making them
twittle their thumbs wondering how long it is going to take before an image pops
up.

3)  Thumbnails are also an option in presenting an image at a reduced file size.
I think I recall you having used this in your site, but I didn't want to leave
it out.

The key here is to catch the viewers attention quickly.  Most people are
impatient and there's enough competition out there that if they don't like what
they are seeing (or NOT seeing), it is no real hassle to click away from one
site and to another.

Good luck in your endeavours!

Cynthia Greene

Improve Your Ad! Here's How..
ByRon Sathoff and Kevin Nunley

Wanna improve profits?  Need to make more money?  The first
step is to find more people who are interested in what you
   sell.

You could go door to door.  You might call all of your past
customers for tips on who to call next.  But more than likely,
you will simply place an ad.

Print, broadcast, and online advertising are the fast way to
get the word out to thousands, even millions, of interested
   prospects.

Here are five simple ways to improve your ad to get a great
   response fast:

   1. The most important way to improve an ad really has nothing
to do with the ad itself.  Ads work ten times better when they
are tightly targeted.  Targeting means putting your ad in a
place where most of the people who see it are the same folks
who are most likely to buy from you.

For most businesses, a good example is your morning newspaper.
No doubt it reaches hundreds of thousands of readers, but they
come from all walks of life and professions.  While you are
paying to get your ad in front of those massive minions, you
have to know that few are intensely interested in what you
   sell.

You'll often do far better by placing your ad in a trade paper
or magazine that covers your industry.  Their readership may
be just a few thousand, but almost every one of those readers
is working in your industry and knows and needs what you sell.
You ad will get a far better response.

   2. Make your ad an attention-getter.  All of us are bombarded
by thousands of advertising messages each day, from radio
spots, to TV audio that plays in the background while we're
making dinner, to the newspaper ad you see blowing past you as
you get out of your car.

We humans deal with it by simply tuning out all but a few ads.
The ads we pay attention to are the ones that pertain directly
to our most pressing concerns.  The ads we notice are the ones
that promote a product, service, or idea that can solve our
problem, make us feel better, make us richer, or make us feel
   sexy and loved.

Get attention by targeting your best audience.  Then use a
headline to shout out a problem or solution your target
   audience will immediately identify with.

   3. Make your ad skim-friendly.  Only a small percentage of us
start at the beginning of an ad and read every word to the
end. We just don't have the time or interest (remember those
thousands of ad messages we face each day?).

Most of us skim through an ad.  If the ad is more than a
couple of sentences, we will skip it if it doesn't look like
   copy we can skim.

Put your most important phrases in bold.  Ron likes to bold
the key elements of the offer.  Kevin insists that he can get
the jist of the offer simply by reading Ron's bold phrases.

Your ad should be easy to read FAST.  Keep sentences short.
Use simple everyday words.  Make your paragraphs no longer
than three lines.  Try to limit yourself to one idea per
   sentence.

   4. If your ad will appear in print or on TV, use a picture,
graphic, or image to enhance your message.  The image should
   help tell the story.

Almost all advertising paints a vision of the customer in dire
trouble.  Then, when she buys the product, she is delivered
into the promised land of a better, easier, more enjoyable
life. Depending on your ad, you may be able to use images to
illustrate this important story line that works with any
   audience.

   5. Your ad must show people how to buy.  Include as many ways
to contact you as possible.  When we send an article to
publications, we hear from a lot of readers when we include
our website address. We hear from even more if we include our
email address at the end.  Add our phone number and regular
mailing address to the mix, and reader response goes from a
   trickle to a flood.
