From:Debbie Cohen
Subject:Payment Systems- PayPal and others

I really enjoy AdLand Digest and it's one of the few ezines I read
from beginning to end. After reading this issue's comments about
paypal,  I re-read issue 276 to get one of the references. Nam
discussed the experience he had paying for a guaranteed traffic
package and never having the service completed . Subsequently he
tried to get a refund and was given the run around, referred to
paypal, and then told by paypal it was beyond the 30 day limit.

Given the number of e-mails Nam sent to the original company, to
paypal plus the aggravation he went through , I'd be happy to give
him a free ad in my Quotations newsletter located at:

http://www.outside-the-box.net

It goes out to 5200 people and though it isn't a marketing
newsletter, I believe some people on the list are interested in home
businesses.

I personally think since Nam did have proof that he contacted the
guaranteed visitors site within 30 days several times, that paypal
should share some responsibility in this matter. I hate to see
someone disillusioned with internet marketing so please feel free to
reach me if you'd like the free ad, Nam. I also feel Nam showed
self-control  in not mentioning the name of the company that took
his money, though he certainly had no reason to protect them.

From:Bill Bauer
Subject:Payment Systems- PayPal and others

I do a lot of work with the court system all over
the US because I teach people how to overturn
judgments, defeat bill collectors and generally
improve their credit ratings. I'm not an attorney
so I can't charge people for looking at their
judgments and pointing out the defects in them
which are legion. About 98% or more of all
judgments are illegal, null and void upon their
face. In fact, I've looked over hundreds of
judgments over time and have yet to find one in
which  I could not point out lethal errors making
them null and void upon their face. I am a student
of the law, not a law student nor an attorney.

It is my belief that while PayPal has a legal
right to freeze the account preventing further
deposits, when they also refuse access to the
money they then garnish money without court order
giving them legal basis upon which to garnish
which is highly actionable and it seems to me that
if anyone filed suit on them for that reason they
ought to win in a heartbeat and should be able to
collect huge damages from them.

Just my opinion

Subject:Hosting company

Hi Merv & adland readers,

I highly recommend Site Build It for any type of web site.
It is expensive ONLY if you look at it as a hosting company,
Site Build It is far more than that.
Each of the Site Build It tools alone, are worth far more than the cost.

I have been on the Net for a long time and I can verify that using all the
tools has saved me weeks of hard work and eliminated the guesswork
involved in trying to decide what people want.

Using the tools, I have also found out why another site I made in the
past is not getting any hits and I can now edit the site to change that.

You say you are thinking about building a Web page.
I am also a web site designer, (part time now that I am doing far better
working on the Net.)
Site Build It is the easiest way to build a proper web site that I have
seen, you would have no problems using it to build your first web site.

In conclusion, go to your affiliate page for Site Build It and take 30
minutes to look around.
Understand that Site Build It is just that, it Builds Sites, it is not just
a hosting company.

If you need more help getting started, why not visit on of my web sites not
built by Site Build It, www.becomequalified.com , it contains mostly free
information on getting started doing business on the Net.
Feel free to contact me if you have more questions about Site Build It, you
will find an e-mail address on the site.

Hello Roger,

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I also think that popups and popunders ads
are a scourge on the internet. I detest them with a passion. Unfortunately I
to think that they are here to stay.
I am a distributor of a very large marketing group and they also use them.
They use them for their newsletter signups.
They are very annoying and some won't go away. Or they are putting them in
the upper right hand corner, where you can't get to the exit button.
I would rather get tons of email than have to put up with the popups and
popunders.

I agree with Heidi that if done properly pop-ups
can be very effective and acceptable.

I had heard many reports of highly successful pop-ups
to get visitors to subscribe to a site's newsletter so
I decided to investigate the various scripts and methods.

The result ?

Confusion.

I really needed a proper guide to show me how.

I found one - with Pop-Up Response by Chayden Bates.

In fact I was so impressed with the guide and the

From:John Yarrow
Subject:HTML question.

This is in response to Elizabeth Piotrowski post regarding pages being
view able in all browser.  I can not tell you what "<!DOCTYPE HTML
PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">" does exactly but I can
tell you that certain html code simply does not work in all browsers.  I
do not see how a line of code at the top of the page can change that.
There are standards for html code that works with all the newer browsers
and code that can be put in your page with statements to cause non
conforming systems to skip bits of code that wont work (such as java
code for browsers that do not have java enabled).  There are many sites
now that offer to scan your page and tell you if your code meets the
current standard and what browsers it is compatible with.  I program
straight html and have found it almost impossible to write code that
works everywhere.  The best suggestion I can give is keep it simple.
The more bells and whistles you use the more likely it is that somebody
will not see or hear your page the way it was meant by you.  Each new
version of a browser brings new enhancements that are all varied by the
browser brands, resolution of each computers receiving the page along
with setting for cookies,  Jave script, etc.  If you stick with the
basics and use layouts that work even if pictures are turned off  (alt
tags show test where pictures would be) you are more likely to at least
be understood my most visitors.  It all depends on what your page is
suppose to do.  I keep both Netscape and I.E. on my system and test with
both at different resolutions.  I do not use the newest browser but
instead use the 4 to 5.0 or so of each.  I have found that most people
on the net are still relatively new to computers and do not upgrade
there browsers unless absolutely necessary.  Most of the kids that like
all the fancy stuff are not buying anything but music and games for the
most part.

Hope this helps

Subject:trafficzilla.com

Hi Adlanders,
I am writing about my adventures with article and
newsrelease submission. I sent a release with one
company about my garage sale site and received drop
me's from medical companies, and all kinds of
unrelated other companies.  The good news-they did
send my release,  The bad news-They used my name as
the sender and I received all kinds of flack for
sending spam.

Then I heard about trafficzilla.com.  It sounds
like a dream for promoting a website, and maybe it is.
That is what I wish to find out.  I used their
"article blaster" and their "news release blaster" and
never received one confirmation or comment from any
source.  This struck me as strange in that I was
deluged with the one service with  feedback both
positive and negative, but to receive zero feedback
seems odd.

So I am asking members if they can give me
feedback on trafficzilla.com.  I have seen no evidence
that any one received my article and news release. I
was told it takes a week or two to get feed back by
trafficzilla, but this has never been the case with
past news releases I have done.

Any comments?  Can you recommend  a similar service
for sending news releases and articles?
 Thanks. john lundgren www.garagesalebonanza and

Subject:Wow that was good

Hi All,
What a helpful group you are. So many questions were answered for me.
The Herbalife one answered my suspicions as I too are one of the many.
Paid ads are by far better than the free one's.
I just have one problem.
USA is a mighty place and is in the habit of screwing my South African currency.
e.g. When you have a special for $30 you are asking for a third of my monthly
income. And getting worse daily.
I would like to set up with one of the ad agencies and offer my country ads at
R30 which is about $3. What advice?

Another idea I had was to offer spelling and editing facility for a few $$ to
help reduce the typo's and some glaring grammar mistakes. I have done this for
free for some websites and autoresponder messages and have had responses from
'thank you' to 'mind your own business'. The most common that I Find is 'you'
instead of 'your'

Thanks for a marvellous digest.

Subject:Alexa Tool bar

Hi Bogdan and fellow Adlanders;

I have recently downloaded the Alexa toolbar and it is an eye opener.
http://www.alexa.com

The Alexa toolbar is very unobtrusive and rides just under your IE toolbar.
Alexa ranks websites by traffic and provides related links based upon where
surfers actually go.

You are probably asking why you would care about ranking according to traffic.
It has helped me tremendously when making decisions about where to place an ad
and if the ads are worth what they cost.

It also lets you know immediately if a self-proclaimed Guru is a winner or a
wiener.

My real estate website, http://www.yourrealestateforsale.com gets 41 visits per
day and is ranked 1,347,226 with Alexa.

My other site http://www.967andy.com is ranked 2,006,455 and it averages around
25- 30 visits per day.

Adland Pro World's Free Classifieds is ranked 28,586
http://www.adlandpro.com/default.asp?rep=16277

http://www.yahoo.com is ranked 6 and http://www.google.com is ranked 5.  I
haven't figured out who is number 1.

So now I don't buy ads or listen to someone from a page that has less traffic
than mine and I try hard to get linked from high traffic sites to improve my
search engine ranking.

The related links feature is very helpful.  sometimes I search for a website and
can't find exactly what I want.  Often times the related links will help me zero
in on what I need.

The bottom line to all this is good information is a wonderful thing and if
Bogdan tells you something, you better listen.

Thanks
Andy Sparks

16 TIPS FOR BECOMING A BETTER WRITER
By Michael Angier

Whether you're writing a memo, a letter, an article or a
full-length novel, there are a few basic rules to keep in mind
that will help your message first to be read and then to be
better understood and accepted.

1. Never Be Boring
Your reader will forgive almost anything except you being
boring. They don't have to agree with you, but they should at
least be intrigued. Make the reader care. Don't be afraid to be
"edgy." Look at every sentence and ask yourself, "Why will they
care about this?"

2. Write in Short Sentences
The reader shouldn't have to work hard to understand what you're
saying. If they have to go back over a sentence because of poor
structure, it's not their fault, it's yours. Read what you've
written aloud or have someone else read it aloud to look for
sentences that are too long or convoluted.

3. Write TO the Reader
Use "you" often. Look for ways to eliminate or reduce "I" and
"me." Present tense, second person is always best. It feels more
to the reader like you're talking to THEM.

4. Go Active
Use active verbs as much as possible. They're more engaging.
They move the reader along and take fewer words to get your
message across. "John loves Mary" is much more powerful than,
"Mary is loved by John."

5. Keep it Simple
The front page of The Wall Street Journal and all of USA Today
is written for the eighth grade reading level. Why should we be
any different? People aren't interested in things they don't
understand. Make your points quickly and succinctly. Make your
words work and use as few of them as possible. You want to use
the right word, but make sure you're using it because it's the
right word and not just to show off your vocabulary--or your new
thesaurus.

6. Tell Stories
Facts tell and stories sell. The best writers and speakers of
the world have always been good story tellers. Your own stories
are the best. What you are sharing is wisdom from your point of
view and stories can illustrate this better than anything else.

7. Know Your Subject
Write on things on which you've earned the right to write. Know
100 times more about your subject than you write about, but
don't write about all of it. The more you know, the more
confidence--and credibility--you'll have.

8. WIFM
This is the radio station that everyone listens to. The call
letters stand for What's in It For Me. People want to know what
they'll get out of what you're writing. Appeal to what they want.

9. Write Like You Talk
Or at least the way you'd LIKE to talk. Too many times, I see
people who are good verbal communicators try to put on a
different air in their writing. It doesn't work. It's much
better to be conversational.

10. Paint Pictures
We think in pictures and should write in ways that create these
pictures in the mind of the reader. Be descriptive. Use
examples. Describe the unfamiliar by using some of the familiar.
"Jennifer's first day at her new job reminded her of the
freshness and unfamiliarity she experienced on her first day of
school."

11. Sleep On it
It's a rare individual who can sit down and write something well
at the first attempt. Any writing of import should be written
and then reviewed later--preferably at least a day later. Some
things should be edited several times over an extended period of
time.

12. Write and Read Extensively
This advice is from Stephen King--a prolific writer. If you want
to be a good writer you have to do two things--read a lot and
write a lot. Enough said.

13. Break it Down
Where appropriate, use bullet points. Use them for summaries or
outlines. Think about someone who may only start out by scanning
your text. Let your bullet points draw the reader in.

A Few Added Points for Email Writing
Keep your lines to 60-65 characters maximum. A column that's too
wide taxes the eyes of the reader and appears overwhelming.

Keep paragraphs to no more than six lines. Short paragraphs
provide white space to the text. They break up the page and make
it appear less formidable to the reader. Like in music, the
space between the notes is as important as the notes themselves.

Don't use all caps. Capital letters are harder to read than
upper and lower case. They also can be perceived as SHOUTING! A
little uppercase usage is ok--using all caps doesn't work and
looks amateurish.

=====================Joke of the Day   (1)===============

Lil' Johnny attended a horse auction with his father.  He
watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his
hands up and down the horses' legs, rump, and chest.  After a
few minutes, Johnny asked, "Pop, why are you doing that?"

"Because I'm thinking of buying these horses."

Johnny looked worried and said, "Then I think we'd better hurry
home right away!"

"Why?" his father asked.

"Because the mailman stopped by yesterday, and I think he
wants to buy Mom!"
