================== Word from publisher ====================

Greetings All

Welcome  310 new subscribers who joined list since last mailing.

                                   ----===(*)===-----

I've always thought that because I do business on the Internet, I have to accept
spam and just live with this. Recently my inbox folder gets bombarded with
all kinds of emails with Chinese and Korean characters, some other with porno
images and free casino offers.
I'm putting daily about 20 emails on my block list and still the next day I see
familiar messages from the previous day, just sent from different email address
than the one I just blocked.

It looks like our internet is still in the early stages of  the "Wild Wild West"
syndrome.
I'm really getting tired of deleting those spam messages, and explaining to my
kids not to even open them not to mention that I'm deeply concerned.

The biggest filth is being sent to our homes without any consideration for
the recipient's age and interests. I feel almost ready to ask government to
do something about it. If government today would decided to sanction those
who are sending the spam and block countries where the spam originates
from, I wouldn't say a word against it. My everyday activities are cleaning
my inbox from spam at least once every hour. By doing this I delete sometimes
valid  messages and later wonder if I should go through several hundred
of emails in the delete folder and check for sure if I haven't deleted something
important.

How to stop these sick people from destroying  this excellent communication
medium. All legitimate businesses will suffer because of those unscrupulous
people and email soon will be associated with porno, gambling, thieves and
criminals.
Parents will be afraid to set-up an email account for their kids from the fear
of exposure to dirty world of so called "business opportunity marketers"
who say that they are not promoting sex but only ways to make money
in this business. (this explanation was given to me many times when
I refused to advertise these kind of ads at Adlandpro).

Are we going to be put out of business because email which was invented
to communicate in an efficient way, will become favourite communication tool
for criminals and thieves?
I don't even want to touch the topic of  viruses sent through the email.

Anybody has an answers?

From:Anita
Subject:There is a new SPAMMER in Town.

Hi Adlanders:

In response to Andy Sparks comment about a new spammer in town, I think this
is even more serious than just spamming. I have had several emails over the
last few weeks that have automatically downloaded files to my PC. Unfortunately,
there doesn't seem to be any way of avoiding this download from happening. But
even more unfortunate is the fact that one of the downloads contained the
w32KLEZ
virus.

I didn't even know what happened. The email came in, I clicked on it to read
it, it downloaded files, and when I looked to see what the files were, voila
- it executed the program with the virus. (Stupidity on my part, I know). After
cleaning up my PC I decided not to use OUTLOOK anymore, thinking that the
problem
was based on the fact that the email files are downloaded to your PC as soon
as you log on to Outlook. So I started reading my mail directly from my ISP
through their webmail feature. This did not make any difference. As soon as
you click on one of these emails, it downloads the files. It doesn't seem to
matter where or how you are getting your mail.

Does anyone know anything about these automatic downloads and how to avoid them
(other than just not reading your mail at all)???? One solution seems to be
to use an operating system other than Windows. I've been using Linux for the
past two weeks and have not had any problems with these emails (and I know I've
gotten more of them). Are viruses written mostly for Windows? Does using Linux
really help you avoid these problems? Any help would be appreciated.

Anita

Hi, Stuart, all.

Unfortunately, most of the services that promise
"tons of inexpensive, or free, traffic!!! ..." consist
of the exit pop variety, which is not of very high quality.
(most recipients close the windows before they even
have a chance to load ...)

I recommend:

Learning more about how each individual major search engine/directory
works, get tips on how to get listed, and rank higher, faster, by
utilizing Robert Woodhead's (nearly) free Selfpromotion.com.

Once you feel you have your site's head content optimized,
check out ...

Inktomi Search Index
Powers top search sites on the Web, including AOL, MSN and HotBot.
Overall, this Index powers 100 sites and receives 60 million queries a day.
For less than $40.00 per URL, you get listed in 48 hours.

Sumantra Roy's 1stSearchRanking PayPerClick Service
Guaranteed, targeted traffic for as little as 5 cents a visitor.

TrafficMaestro.Com
Guaranteed traffic, for as little as 1 cent a visitor.

The aforementioned services are the most inexpensive ways I know of
to get quality traffic. You may find a number of free alternatives,
but I'm sure you'll find that you get what you pay for ..;)

Subject:I  need to advertise my new business

Hi Adlanders,

My name is Crystal Lakeland and I too am new to marketing and like Connie, I too
have got rather bogged down by all the talk of affiliations, banner exchanges
and click thru's etc. I will probably get the hang of it in the end but it is a
lot to take in at first. And I am new to adland so if any of you old hands have
heard this marketing method before you may go to the next letter.

I received an email and decided to try their method for getting the website
noticed mainly because it was easy (and cheap). I decided to auction my services
thru ebay - Now you can't directly promote your website on the ebay auctions but
you can set up an about me page-on which you can describe your business and
direct people to your website. So in my auction line I simply stated that I was
auctioning my tarot readings, then on the sellers page directed people to seek
further info on my 'about me' page which has a link to my website. Now I an non
too concerned whether anyone puts a bid in for my services just as long as see
the auction and go to the website and if anyone does put in a low bid then they
get the reading cheap - I think this is called a loss leader. Anyway it only
costs a few pennies to place the advert - sorry auction so I will see how it
goes (I only placed the ad yesterday).
If you want to hear how I got on you can email me at crystal@neonstarlight.com

hope it helps.

What do you think about newsletter services as a way to generate traffic to

has not generated much traffic from their site.  I do think it is a good way to

=====================Site Review Response  (1)===============
From:Kim B. Juul
Subject: http://wjbizopps.tripod.com/home

Hi William,

I'm just a subscriber to the AdLand Digest and followed up on your request about
reviewing your site.

Here's my "judgement" :)

Good:
Clean view
No odd "send-me-to-never-ever-land" linking (the linking says
'affiliateprogram', it sends me to an affiliate-program)
Nice and easy structure
Fast

And now the bad part..... don't rip my head of, because of these statements...
:)

Bad:
Too much italic text (only use italics on direct quotes or testimonials)
Loose the girly-color (pink) - I know I'm picking on small things, but.....

Overall:
Ok+

I like it when sites are clean and fast - it seems like some people forget that
ALOT of Internet users still are using normal phonelines and have to pay for
their time.
Oh... there's a tripod popup too.... I'm very annoyed with these popups, but
unfortunally they are getting more and more implemented and being a professional
surfer, I've learned to kill them in the same microsecond they come along -
meaning, I never get the 'chance' to see them anyway.

If you want to move your site to somewhere else, without banners and popups or
anything else (still free and no BS - I use him myself), let me know, ok?

Well, keep up with the work - it's not half that bad as my comments might let on
to.

Kind regards,

Kim B. Juul

Increase Traffic by Programming a Contest!
BySteve Humphrey

Visitors come to your site and don't buy on their first visit.
It often takes 6-7 visits before they buy. So, how do you get
their business if they don't come back? For that matter, how do
you get them to come back?

One answer is to run a contest. Not just any old contest will
do! It must be crafted to keep them returning again and again.
Lots of smart people will tell you that running a contest will
help but they don't tell you how to do it. Here's a blueprint
you can alter to suit your purposes.

Every aspect of the contest was handled by CGI scripts and a
couple of web pages. Even selecting the winner was done by a
script. This final script simply located the persons with the
most referrals. It drew one at random if there was a tie for
first place.

One of my clients came up with the basic idea and we developed
it together as a team. People would get one "entry" into the
contest when they signed up for one or more of his newsletters.
They would get another "entry" for each person they referred.

It was hugely successful. During the 60 days of the contest,
over 45,000 new people had subscribed to my client's
newsletters. They were coming back to his site over and over
again. Orders for ezine ads poured in.

At the end of the contest period a week-long cruise vacation to
Montego Bay, Jamaica was awarded to the winner. Generally, if
the prize is valued at over $500, some authorities in your state
may expect to be notified. There are various requirements; check
with the appropriate state agency for details.

We posted a complete set of rules for the contest on the Web
site. We announced the contest itself as well as the current
front-runners in each issue of my client's newsletters.

Each person entering the contest was assigned a Personal
Identification Number (PIN). The PIN was used to connect them
with their referrals. Next, a person was given the chance to
tell their friends about the contest.

We made everything as easy as possible for the contestants. All
they had to do was supply the email address and name and the
scripts did the rest.

They'd be shown the message that was about to be sent to their
friend. We were making every effort to be honest with them and
not cause any ill will.

When their friend(s) entered the contest, using a PIN we gave
them, their "referral count" would be increased. To win, a
contestant had to get the most referrals. In the event of a
multi-person tie for first place, the software would
automatically conduct a random drawing.

During the contest, each contestant was able to use a special
Web page to monitor the contest. They'd see the top- ranked
contestants and the number of referrals each one had made. They
could log in with their PIN and see their own referrals, too.

They were able to come back to the site at any time and enter
new referrals. We added a small form that would look up their
PIN in case they'd forgotten it. They could send their own
emails to friends to tell them about the contest. They could
place ezines ads giving contest details and a PIN to use.

Keeping up with all those contestants, who they referred, how
many they referred, etc., was a job for a database engine. Since
we had MySQL on a server we controlled, we used that. The
scripting was done in Perl.

Two Perl modules were needed: DBI.pm and the MySQL module for
Perl. The modules are chunks of Perl code that let a script send
commands in SQL (the generic language of databases) from the
script to the MySQL database engine (program).

You can use a different database; you just need the
database-specific module so Perl can "talk" to it through the
DBI module. DBI is needed regardless of which database you use.
Specific modules exist for Oracle, PostGres, etc.

We verified the email addresses of all the winner's referrals;
we would have to disqualify a contestant if any of the addresses
were faked - and award the prize to someone else. We designed
the code so that any attempts to cheat actually decreased your
odds of winning - and it was all automatic!

Thousands of names and email addresses are in the database. The
referral counts have been reset to zero and we are ready to
launch another contest at any time we choose.

The programming effort, for the most part is all done. We'll
just have to edit the contest page(s) and the rules page to
reflect the new prize and the new "start" and "end" dates. We
can easily get *at least* as large a subscriber boost with our
next contest!

Here's the bottom line: You'll get more visitors, and they'll
visit again and again. You get to show them your offer enough
times to win their business. No matter what product or service
you're selling, an automated referral contest is something you
should seriously consider.

=====================Joke of the Day   (1)===============

Provided by Frank Kaiser

A beautiful young blonde woman boarded a plane to New York with a ticket
for the coach section. She looked at the seats in coach and then looked
into the forward cabin at the first-class seats. Since the first-class
seats appeared to be much larger and more comfortable, she moved forward to
the last empty one.

The flight attendant checked her ticket and told the woman that her seat
was in coach. The blonde replied, "I'm young...blonde and beautiful, and
I'm going to sit here all the way to New York." Flustered, the flight
attendant went to the cockpit and informed the captain of the "blonde
problem".

The captain went back and told the woman that her assigned seat was in
coach. Again, the blonde replied, "I'm young, blonde and beautiful, and I'm
going to sit here all the way to New York." The captain didn't want to
cause a commotion, so he returned to the cockpit to discuss the blonde
problem with the copilot.

The copilot said that he had a blonde girlfriend, and that he could take
care of the problem. He then went back and briefly whispered something in
the blonde's ear.

She immediately got up, said "Thank you so much," hugged the co-pilot, and
rushed back to her seat in the coach section.

The pilot and flight attendant, who were watching with rapt attention,
together asked the co-pilot what he had said to the woman. He replied, "I
just told her that the first class section wasn't going to New York."
