software to help you get your emails through the SPAM filters. is where I have it on my servers.

I use it all the time now and found it to be a great help.

SPAMCHECK is ok, but this is instant and no waiting for emails to arrive.

You can also sell it on to your subscribers and make a few dollars.

Hi Merle,

You can look over the list of filter trigger words at and then clean up your
out-going email.

But here's something even better. This is a cool system
using Spam Assasin (a known filter) as a basis to
determine if your emails will trigger the filters.

Here is how it works:

Simply send the email you want to send out to
Make sure the subject of your email starts with
the word TEST or it will be ignored.

Within a minute or two you will receive a report telling
you if your email passes the filter test - and what to do
about it if you are not filter-friendly.

I tested this service and found it very helpful.
Try it and see.

Hi Merle and Fellow Adlanders,

Precheck your ads and emails for sp^m filter problems:
The people you are sending email to may have sp^m filters in
place, and may not even know it.  Here is a way to check your
outgoing emails at no cost. Feel fr^e to forward this to any
of your friends and colleagues who may want to check their
emails before sending them.

Three simple steps:

1. Send your ezine to the following email address:

2. In the SUBJECT line of the email put exactly what you
would normally put, but at the very beginning, type the
word "TEST" without the quotes).

TEST OurBusinessOffice Ezine, A way to test for filters

3. Paste your ezine into the body of the email and send

That's it! Keep this information on file, and send all of

Subject:What Are You Doing As An Ezine Publisher?

Hi Merle, Bogdan, and Adland Friends:

Publishing an ezine is extremely hard work, but it is also very rewarding.
There's nothing better than getting a message from a subscriber thanking
you for helping them or telling you how much they enjoy your ezine.

That being said, publishing in the current Internet environment has become
quite a challenge. What I do now is send out the ezine to my list and then
send a second email letting them know it's been mailed. If they didn't
receive the first mailing, they can click on a link in the second email to
read the issue online.

I'm not sure what I'll do about Habeas, as I'm still unclear what category
my ezine will come under (since I only have 4 - 8 ads per issue).

In the meantime, I am providing other advertising opportunities for my
subscribers in addition to ads in the ezine. I have an Ad Board, Guest
Map, and Golf Game (Advergame) that all provide advertising space. And, of
course, an AdlandPro Classified page!

All the best to everyone,

per year.
If they cannot or will not do this very basic requirement for success,
they aren't going to make it anyway."

Andy, please know that it's not my intention to 'attack' you. It's just
that I've seen this attitude all over the net, and I had to put in my 2
cents worth. When I was starting out, I ran into this type of statement
many times, and all I can say is thank goodness I didn't take it to heart!

Many businesses online today rely on the influx of 'newbies' for their
growth and sales. This is why it bewilders me that so many of these sites
would sabotage their own success with statements like the one above. Why
on earth would one doom a new business owner to failure just because they
have a low bank account balance?

In my opinion, the 'very basic requirement for success' isn't a paid web
site account or domain name - it comes from within. If you truly believe
you can be successful and you work toward that goal, everything will fall
into place.

By now, you're probably rolling your eyes in disgust *lol* However, I feel
this needs to be said, as I'm sure there are many Adlanders who fall into
the 'newbie' category.

Let me tell you a little story about how I started out online. I created
my first website with Netscape Composer. However, it wasn't long before I
became curious about what was going on 'behind the scenes' of a webpage,
so I taught myself how to read and write HTML.

I signed up for a free 5mb hosting account at Linkopp
( It took a while, but eventually I was able to
purchase a domain name. However, I was still unable to pay for hosting, so
I had my domain name redirected through Zone Edit
( This free service was truly a godsend. Shortly
thereafter, paid hosting became a reality for me.

I did extensive research into search engines and meta tags, and invested
nothing more than my time into finding relevant keywords. Self Promotion
( was a big help in this endeavour. My
keyword research paid off in a big way when my site hit #3 at Google. And
I never spent a dime on pay-per-click advertising, search engine
submission or guaranteed hits to get there.

I've been lucky enough to meet people online who taught me a lot about
promotion. They became friends, mentors, and some even became my first

These days, I use paid advertising in combination with free, update my
site on a regular basis, and resubmit to the search engines every month,
to name but a few. My business continues to grow by leaps and bounds. I
believe it's because I am willing to learn, I remember where I came from,
and I refuse to give up when everything looks grim.

Online success IS possible, even if you don't have 2 pennies to rub
together in the beginning. I am living proof :)

Boy, was last week a great issue. Or I'm having a psychotic episode
because I have so many thing to comment on. First, I totally agree with
Andy about normal people having websites. I started an ezine, NetSteals
News and working on my website in June of last year.
I did it to save everyone from all the internet scams. I was niave to say
the least. My ezine is about designing, hosting, finding marketing
partners and advertising for your website for little or no cost. Of
course, when the first issue went out, I didn't know diddly about any of
that, I just knew a scam when I read it. I taught myself how to use
FrontPage, starting with Express and moving up to 2000. I started in June
and my site went online in November. I was pretty darn proud of it. I had
you folks review it, and got some great advice. I took all of it, and
redid it, and I'm still pretty darn proud of it. Of course it's not done,
it'll never be done which is something I didn't realize when I decided to
have a website. I have it hosted on a FREE, yes I said FREE host that I
picked because of their support and because they had FrontPage extensions,
and also DO NOT put ads on your site. You buy your domain name off of them
and you get free hosting for a year. Its and I don't intend to ever
change no matter how much I make. I did however have to move up to a paid
site from them because I had a lot to upload. This cost me a total of
$49.00 a year. FrontPage Express is free and anyone can download it at my
site along with a step-step tutorial on how to use it. Anyone can have a
website if they are willing to WORK at it. The same with search engine
rankings. The newbie site has the ability to submit your site to them, and
there is also free software available to do this. You just need to submit,
work on your site, submit, and work on your site some more. Sincerely,

Response to Gary Kidd's answer

That's right, Ned. Listen to Gary Kidd...and when you have no site or offer, you
can email him to vent your frustration. Maybe that will make you feel better.

Anybody that recommends this kind of marketing, especially to a beginner,
clearly does not have your best interests at heart.

My web site gets trawled all the time, so I get ads to my password retrieval
address and my spam abuse address; addresses I know I have never given out or
used to place and ad.

How do you think I greet these ads? Do you think I read them and sign up for
whatever the offer is? No, I don't. I delete them, unread and slightly annoyed.

Aside from a poor response rate, this type of marketing is SPAM no matter how
you slice it. SPAM is, by definition, unsolicited commercial email. Those site
owners to whom you mail certainly did not ask for your ad so, it is unsolicited.
They certainly did not ask for several copies of your ad and this is enough to
enrage some people to the point where they complain to everyone they can think
of, and then you are done.

The penalties previous outlined in this Adland discussion are very real and you
do not have to be sending massive amounts of email to be at risk.

I personally know of 3 website owners who lost their sites with no notice, no
warning and no repayment of their per-paid web service. (see my article at ) Their complaints for being
shut down have never been answered and they never recovered their money for
unused services.

I have also seen many programs that looked like good opportunities disappear
because of over zealous affiliates using SPAM to promote them.

If you, like the rest of us, think you get a lot of mail now, just imagine how
bad it would be if everyone sent email ads to every address they could get their
hands on? All server resources would be devoted to handling mail! The Internet
would become a useless quagmire of advertisements and it would not be the
awesome information resource that is today. The costs involved would be

Please do not use this form of advertising. You must build an opt in list, just
like the rest of us. There are no real short cuts and SPAMMING today involves
too great of a risk.

Also, Gary, please do not recommend this kind of irresponsible marketing,
especially to beginners. If you have had success and haven't been caught yet,
you are lucky, but you can't count on luck to last forever. If I ever get any
SPAM from you, I will report you to everyone that I can think. :)

Subject:Email marketing (Harvesting of email addresses)

It doesn't matter if you put a legitimate business proposition in the
UNSOLICITED email or not. It is spam! I receive 10 or 15 of these so
called business plans a "propositions" a day. I'm to the point I just
delete them without looking. I have an advertising site and I get more of these spamming
"propositions" than paid advertising customers per day.
Sure maybe some people read them and even become customers, but the ill
will caused by the majority isn't worth it.
The best way to send these so called propositions is to have a site with
very good content and have an opt in list. Create your own ezine or do
something useful. You can gain thousands of email addresses just by
letting people request it. Then you definitely aren't spamming. You won't
have thousands of email addresses at first, but over time your list will
grow. If your site is good and your ezine is good, then your popularity
will definitely grow.
Most internet marketers seem to think of people as email addresses and a
way to make money. That's why they work so "hard" to just use a robot to
harvest e-mails.
I'm tired of spammers trying to say that what they are doing is alright,
because they have a "real proposition". All of these so called business
propositions do is try to make another buck for themselves. I know I've
read ENOUGH of THEM!
One more thing, if it's not spamming then why are companies like mine and
various others having to buy software to block these robots!!!????
I hope you guys don't think I'm a jerk (Gary Kidd & Ned), but I'm just
tired of being harassed and taken advantage of. Having a business is
difficult enough without having to deal with a load of junk e-mail.

This thread began with Ned's question: In part,"Can anyone advise me on
the legal aspects of list compilation by trawling of sites for e.mail
addresses to market to." "Is there any statute or protocol...."
"any form of legally binding e.mail" (AD# 328)

Some posts thought he proposed to send ads to webmasters. Wasn't
mentioned.  Some thought he was asking, What is Spam?  He was asking what
is legal.  The last time I counted there are 27 states with anti-spam
laws. U.S. Congressional bills have been
proposed in the House and Senate, to my knowledge none have yet to be
 Spam laws worldwide:
Proposed Federal legislation:
Thomas (service of the Library of Congress):

Here are examples of the advice given:
"Sending people unasked for mail is Wrong."
This was contradicted two sentences later,"After visiting their site, drop
them a line and compliment them on it." Then later,"The only way you can
E-mail people with your offers legally, is to have their permission
first."  This apparently doesn't apply to compliment spam, and need it be

"They (ISPs) are frightened of spamcop...." This is the
unsolicited policing authority. "Look at what you are proposing...
trawling for email addresses..." Most people know their email is a target
as soon as it's placed on the net.  There are spiders and bots that
"trawl" much more quickly than Ned's idea.  Ned's a small fish (sorry
Ned), the big fish collect your adr. and put on someone's 'Greatest Hits
CD', to be sold to bulk emailers in the millions.  These are the real

"As long as you have a legitimate business proposal to offer the
webmaster, then this is not SPAM."  Wouldn't Ned consider his offer as
legitimate?  "I suggest you purchase and read Stephan Ducharme's book..."
Guess what?  I've been spammed by Ducharme. He didn't have
a "silly" disclaimer or remove maybe it really wasn't spam.

So I'm not misunderstood, let me say the obvious; I don't endorse spam or
recommend it.  The question is what is the minimum that everyone can agree
on?  I differ in that I don't consider it another four letter word.  I
have come to tolerate it, just as I have of
Unsolicited Commercial TV ads, UC postal junk mail, and
UC telemarketing, none of which draw fanatical rhetoric like UCE. (not in
Adland's Digest) OK, maybe telemarketers do.

The quality that everyone seems to agree on is, "unsolicited".  But that
isn't clear as there is direct and indirect solicitation on my part.  When
I receive offers I have to this because
of that last freebie I downloaded?  How many companies is acceptable
before it crosses the line and becomes spam?  Am I agreeing to 3
companies? 6?  Unlimited?  Shouldn't they have to be named ahead of time?
Am I also expected to accept offers from every "marketing partner" of
every co.?  For one offer per company or for every product they have?  I
know some would say don't take anything free.  Would you recommend a new
user not take a free email adr.?

Why is there a bias against "commercial"?  There's religious spam,
non-profit, political.. "Spam" is darn near useless as there is no clear,
definite denotation.  It's become subjective, and some people use it like
ketchup, they put it on anything they don't like.

There are many ways to broadcast your offer over the internet. Search Engines,
while effective if you can secure good placement, are not the only way.

I looked at your site, very nice. This seems such a specialized subject, that I
do not think it would be hard to get this site listed, even with a free
submitter. I see that you have keywords and description, be patient, it can take
weeks for your site to actually be indexed.

Placing free ads can be effective, if your product has a wide public appeal.
With your subject matter, I would look for chat rooms, forums, and discussion
groups relating to Rare Tropical Fish and related topics. In these settings you

Also, you will be talking directly to your market, instead of a general group of

Subject:Newbie w/o a clue

Hi Sharon,

I have answered many, many letters similar to yours in my Internet biz. I
really feel for the newbies, as I was one once myself and I know how
frustrating it is to get involved with a biz and find yourself w/o any
help whatsoever. The whole thing can be extremely overwhelming.

So let me give you a couple of very important keys that only you can
answer. Then maybe I can help direct you.

First, all Internet Businesses that are legitimate and have a good product
will take time to build. As I tell my prospects...PLEASE... do NOT spend
your Electric Bill money, thinking you will make enough, in time to pay
your bills! Here's the deal with Internet.

Think about a person that has a million bucks to invest in a biz. They
decide to buy a McDonalds Franchise. Whooo-wee! Then they set up an
advertising budget. Even McDonalds has to advertise! Then they work hard
and wait. They don't quit, because they have all the money invested. They
keep working until they start making a profit! And WOW what a profit they
can make!

So, how does this relate to an Internet Biz. Don't kid yourself, recognize
that ANY good business takes TIME, MONEY, and EFFORT to be a success, just
networking takes less of it!

Too many people quit too soon because the money invested often is quite
small. And too much hype out there creates the idea that you should be
independently wealthy in 3 months! HA! Real businesses, take real time,
real money and real effort. Don't forget that.

So now, ask yourself these questions: Can I afford the monthly fee this
biz is costing me for say 1 year?
Can I afford an ad budget, any ad budget, whatever is comfortable for you,
but something for that same 1 year? If you can say yes to these two
questions, and you are involved in a viable business with a product people
want, you can be successful.

Now, how to direct the amount of funds you have is another question. This
is where I help newbies all the time. After I mentioned in a
letter on advertising a couple of issues back, most of us are easily
overwhelmed by all the choices the Internet provides, and how on earth do
you know what is going to work.

Well let me give you some free advice, one is, list building is like gold
for the Internet Entrepreneur. Everyone wants to buy everyone's list...but
the very best list you can ever have, that you can ever get the most out
of is your OWN list. A list that has built confidence in you! How to do
it? Well you can come up with a bunch of your own ideas. And if you go to
this site you will find a free training course on list building, its only
a 5 day course that will really make sense to you:

And if you are looking for a place to get lots of help as a newbie so you
can go from a newbie to a savvy marketer, including tools (and help to
use them), plus proven and tested ad sources, to work any business you
have now, check this one out: or email me at I have been in advertising and marketing for 30
years, and even with all that experience I found being a newbie on the net
can be very overwhelming and challenging. I love hearing a newbie
say..."Thanks!! I think I am finally getting the hang of this!"

So my final words for a newbie w/o a clue...don't quit, stay focused,
don't have unrealistic expectations, get help, you most definitely can be a
success with the right direction and a positive attitude. I would love to
hear from you...and you have found a great source as well with Adland Pro
and Adland Digest!

Kind Regards,
Holly Klaus

This in response to Sharon's submission,
"Newbie w/o a clue" -

Sharon, writing an ezine can be easy, if you know
how to get it started.  I was lost when I began mine,
and when I reached success, I began a free web book
for ezine training to help others avoid the long hard
way, that I had to take not having a clue!

I began this back in 2001 and now it ranks #1 in
Yahoo and Google!

Feel free to sign up for my free course here:

Also, you do not want to purchase a list - you want
to establish your list by having people want to sign
up for your ezine - they will be much more responsive.

Don't worry in my course, I teach you how to obtain
subscribers as well!  I'm also available to help you
throughout the course!

Best of success to you, Sharon and God bless!

Here are two of the ideas I need your advice on:

(1) How can I structure a separate website to offer this
opportunity to others without looking like the zillions of
"scam" opportunity offers out there?

(2) How can I reach real home-based workers (not dead-beats
looking for get-rich-quick schemes) or travel agency owners
(or employees) who can be productive for me in selling to all
my online customers I am unable to handle by myself.

Hi! Jack,
If you only need 1-3 people I would suggest pulling a few friends and/or a
family members into your business. Then you will have reliable help and
you can tell them straight out how much you can give them. Friends and
family are more likely to take your business and your reputation
However, if you need more it may be better to put an add in your local
paper and network close to home. If you just need help with routine tasks,
maybe contact a neighbourhood teenager that takes business classes at
If you really want an affiliate program (so you can generate extra income
and help with the overflow of orders). Offer the opportunity to some of
your satisfied customer's first. Who better to sell it, than someone that
knows it's good.
As far as a new website goes, just give straightforward account of the
possible income that can be made. Don't spout out big promises that aren't
likely to happen.

Cheryl A. Crossan

Well, I'm going to jump in and disagree with most people about start page
programs. My reasoning is really very simple. The most important thing to
an internet marketer is an opt-in list. I have an ezine. I also have a
small pop up that gives away a ton of things to people for subscribing to
it. Right now, I'm averaging about a 5% conversion rate from the pop up on
my index page from people who come from the start page programs. Before I
had the pop up, I wasn't getting anyone to sign up of course because the
never saw the sign up on my index page. Now, more subs equal more sales.
So, more clicks from start page programs equal more subs equal more sales.
Also, I bought this pop up program for ONLY 13.95. I wish I'd known about
it 6 months ago. You can see it on Newly Needed at
Also, the more unique visitors you get, the higher you rank with search
engines. And, some of the FREE affiliate programs aren't available until
you reach a certain level of daily or monthly visitors. I am a big
advocate of free affiliate programs. So, I think there's a place, a good
place for start page programs in your advertising campaigns if you use
them realistically, However, you probably aren't going to make any site
sells with them. Sincerely, Cheryl.

We've been using a service that gives you free web hosting if you purchase
a domain name from them. The domains are 14.95 per year. You can get 5 mb.
of space for a web site free. No banners. No popups. Just your site. OK,
5mb isn't a lot of space if you want videos or lots of pages and pictures.
But it's enough for a lot of sites.

For those who are too broke or too cheap to buy FrontPage or DreamWeaver,
you can get free web authoring software at

I have a number of free sites that I have been moving to Register4Less
from another host that put banner ads on my sites.

I hope this helps.

Like a one stop shop to get everything you wanted for your Internet
business, what tools would you want?

Would you care if it had ad-tracking or add free autoresponders?

Would the ability to run an ezine be important?

I am gathering information for a project and all feedback, the good, the
bad and the ugly is appreciated.

Also, what would be a good monthly fee for access?  I know that is a
difficult question to answer for a site that doesn't exist but I am asking
a hypothetical (had to use spell check for that one) question and a
hypothetical answer is perfectly acceptable.

It seems to me that where ever I go on the internet to try and obtain
information regarding building a home based business, I have to read
between every line. I know..I know..... buyer beware but isn't there some
way of rating or weeding out  all the BS out there? I was bambozzled, fast

all of this but shouldn't there be some way a person who is serious about
working on the WWW won't be taken to the cleaners? The promise of YOUR own

you have to advertize, which isn't "FREE" it's down right expensive. I'm a
small guy on SSD trying to get off of it and I find myself deeper in the
hole. I understand it takes money to make money but this is  killin me.

It seems to me that anyone can be taken in on all this BS. It would be
nice if there was a rating on everyone's business like the B.B.B. I'm I

David van der Merwe

So many of us, fall into the same trap.  We all want the same thing - a
steady income by doing what we enjoy most.
I personally find that there are far too many opportunities out there
promising you the world.  I have been around in circles for years and
finally start to reap some benefits for all my hard work.
I started a website to help others who are drowning in hundreds of
programs that promised so much, but nothing ever happened.
Please have a look and let me know what you think.  Any suggestions or
help you can assist with will be appreciated.

I've been trying all sorts of Solo-Ads, Traffic Generators, Ezines and

What are my Best and most cost efficient ways for me to Market my WebSite

A Russian and an American are talking: - When I'm in a good mood I drive a car
painted a light color, says the American. When I'm busy or have a lot of
troubles, I drive a darker colored car. When I go for vacation overseas, I pick
a brightly colored car. - Things are much easier in Russia, says the Russian. If
you are in a good mood, they will give you a ride in yellow car with a blue
stripe (police car). If you feel bad, the car will be white and the stripe red
(ambulance). I was abroad only once, and there I drove a tank.
