Yes of course it was inevitable. More and more people will jump on the
money spinning bandwagon in the hope that they can remove cash from our
personal pockets or from our corporate pockets.

Yes, we all really should take a stand against these insidious efforts to
make us pay for email.

However, I really don't think that signing a petition will be enough. Far
better that we should all play the game and block all email that contains
a Habeas Warrant.

Why don't we all send an email to our entire address book and lists
stating something similar to this:

"As a matter of policy will not support any individual
or organisation that promotes paid email in any form. Please note that any
email that contains a header or other element from a paid for service will
be either added to our blocked sender list or it will be deleted

Better still add it to your signature file!

Let's make this a viral campaign and use the very technology that these
people wish to capitalize upon to influence as many people as possible.

Best wishes

Hi Marianne,

It does not seem to surprise me that you were very well taken in on this
cheap scare tactic ploy demonstrated by icops. This is nothing more do
drive people into subscribing to icops newsletter without even knowing it.
If icops wanted to be honest about it and if there was a real threat. they
would have posted the petition form on their website. But instead they say
you have to send a email to get it.

That's a great way to get subscribers is to scare the hell out of people. I
knew something was fishing about this deal. I kept thinking if there was a
real threat. why keep the petition form a secret.

Bottom line. I believe Hebeas and icops are the best of friends. Nobody
can't fool me to make me believe a bad thing is going to happen. It just
somebody playing the chicken little fiddle again.

I sent Robert Lee an email saying there should be some concern about this
issue. He responded back telling me the whole thing is a scam. I remember
icops pulled the same thing back about a year ago saying spamcops are
being sued they had the same tactic to get the claim form  you had to
email subscribing to icops.. But it seems like some tactic to get people
that are dumb enough to subscribe to the icops newsletter.

In either case I still did fall for this oldest trick in the book being
done over and over again.

From:Adrian Elman
Subject:Text -vs- HTML E-Zines

I have been reading the discussion concerning whether
one should send a newsletter in HTML or plain text and
felt that I should point something out.

If you don't want to invest in your newsletter then
what I am about to say will not be of any interest,
however if you understand the power in a newsletter
subscriber base then spending money to develop it and
retain loyalty is not going to frighten you off.

In issue 355 we saw clearly that most were happy to
read an HTML newsletter while some still preferred
plain text. Of course you can send one of each but
I tend to think that the latest technology of dual
formats in certain autoresponder services has to be
the best answer.

The way it works is that you paste each version into
a separate field and then save them as one responder
message. When it gets delivered nobody can see there
are 2 versions in the mail and the mail displays only
the format that the recipient can read. If his mail
program only reads plain text that will be what he
sees. If he can read HTML then that's the one that
gets displayed.

This way you don't upset anyone and you don't lose
any subscribers.

I know of 4 companies that have this technology and
I own 2 of them :-)

As John Olson asked me to mention when our new QT-Pro
service was launched I am mentioning it now.

None of you have ever seen an autoresponder service
like it. It's streets ahead of our famous QuickTell
service but enough of all that.

What will interest newsletter publishers is that even
though QT-Pro has this combined format feature it also
caters for those HTML enabled people who would rather
receive newsletters in plain text.

Just tell the newsletter publisher that you want it in
plain text only and he can check the box in your
subscriber record that says 'Prefers plain text'. Then
he will always be sent the plain text version instead.

You can try out QT-Pro absolutely free of charge and
that means no giving of credit card details so it is
a genuine free trial. That way you can see if it is
the solution you have been looking for before making
any financial commitment.

The free trial does not allow you to import leads or
send broadcast mails but you can test your ezine /
newsletter in a dual format responder to see what it
looks like when it arrives in your mailbox.

There is a lot of misunderstanding between you and I that needs to be

In Issue #332, you said:

"I bet that your Google success did not happen until you had your own
domain name."
End Quote

To which I replied in Issue #334:

"I hit #3 at Google after I had my own domain
End Quote

After re-reading both of our past posts, I realized what I should have
said, which was that I reached #3 at Google after I had my own domain name
AND paid hosting. I don't know if the paid hosting bit will make anything
clearer to you. However, I personally think that it was my domain name and
keywords that got me a good ranking; not necessarily the addition of paid

And she's missed my point yet again. Elizabeth, do you honestly believe
that you could have received a good Google rank if you had maintained your
free name and hosting? Do you honestly believe that your answer to the
question is a "yes"?
End Quote

Robert, I think it's the other way around - you have missed MY point. Two
points, actually:

1. For the last time, my domain NAME was not free - I purchased it. I had
free hosting, bought my domain name, and had the domain name redirected
via Zone Edit TO my free site. The hosting was free; the domain name was
2. I never said that I believed a good Google rank would happen with free
hosting. I simply said that my goal was to get the domain name itself 'out
there', and there are other ways to do this than just submitting to the
search engines. The domain name was my first shot at getting noticed

My goal with this discussion was simply to say that success is possible,
even if one starts out with free resources. The Google rank statement that
I made was to illustrate how far I've come since I started - which was
barely enough money for a domain name - to paid hosting and a good Google

Then why would you say to someone that they could make money with free
hosting and without their own domain name? I admit that a free site is a
great launching pad. It can be a very affordable way to learn to be a
webmaster, learn the ins and the outs of web promotion. But to say that it
is what someone needs to get started "and make money online" is a lie in
this day and age.
End Quote

I never said that anyone could make money online by ONLY using free
hosting and without their own domain name. Did you miss that part of my
post where I stated that I upgraded to paid hosting, and now use paid
advertising with free advertising? What I said was that anyone can end up
a success, even if all they have in the beginning is nothing. I was
telling my story; not telling everyone else that it was the way to go. It
was simply the way to go for me.

Your comments about a free site being a great launching pad are exactly
the points I was trying to convey, so I'm thinking that you do 'get the
gist' on some level. However, I also never stated that a free site is what
someone needs to make money online. I only said (to quote myself) that
"online success IS possible, even if you don't have two pennies to rub
together in the beginning", a statement that I have repeated several times
in this post in various ways.

Robert, there are many people who started out with nothing, just as I did,
and are successful online business owners today. But it really IS a long
road to success. I have no illusions about that, and neither should anyone
else who is starting out in any type of business. Did I make it sound easy
in my previous posts? If so, that was not my intention. I said success is
possible - I NEVER said it was easy.

It is truly depressing, how quickly a positive point I was trying to make
has regressed to a dissection and a questioning of my image and intentions
as an online business owner, forcing me to justify to you the choices I
have made. And all of this due to your continued attempts to put words in
my mouth that I never uttered.

If you had really read my past posts, you would have seen the point I
was/am trying to make for what it is. Whatever the outcome, so be it. But
I know as well as my clients do that I am an honest business owner; I can
sleep at night and am able to look myself in the eye. And for me, that's

In Issue #335, Andy Sparks said:

"Elizabeth,  You are basically saying, let's not tell them the whole truth
so we don't hurt their feelings."
End Quote

Not true, Andy. What I was basically saying was this: tell them the truth,
but let's not be rude about it. Anyone can easily outline the pros and
cons of free and paid advertising without taking the "If you do it this
way, you'll fail" standpoint.

Personally, I would take "free advertising wasn't effective for me and
here's why" over "I don't know why I'm even telling you about free,
because it won't work no matter what you do".

I have many clients who ask me if free promotion works. Want to know what
I tell them? I tell them that some types of free promotion work for ME. I
also tell them that whether or not an advertising method will work depends
on the type of business they have. Sometimes I give them links to free
advertising resources that have worked for me, but I always restate the
fact that these resources may not produce the same results for them that
they did for me. Always. I would be a fool if I didn't.

Take paid ezine advertising, for example. Thousands praise its
effectiveness. But it didn't work for me. Actually, it failed miserably.
So should I call those thousands idiots just because I had a negative
experience? Of course not!

We are all continuously learning, Andy. And different things will work for
different people. You've learned your own truth about internet
advertising, and there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't share that
truth with your visitors. All I'm saying is that your negative opinion of
free advertising won't hold any less water if you are nice about it.

===========C o n t i n u i n g D i s c u s s i o n (3.3)=============
From:Cathy Wagner
Subject:Never pay for website promotion again.

I can see both points of view here. On the one hand it does take money to earn a
full living online; on the other, you can make some money with free advertising
that can pay for what you need as you grow.

Someone that has never used a pc does not need to have their own paid hosting.
Someone who has never written an ad before does not need to pay to join a
safelist, for example.

There are so many free tools on the web because there is a need for them. People
who want to try out a new business in their spare time should not be made to
feel that they will never make it simply because they don't have money to spend
right now. Even people who have money to spend should be reminded that if they
spend it before they know what they are doing, they are likely to lose it.

Granted, free advertising isn't for everyone or every product, but you can learn
quite a bit about the mechanics of marketing such as ad writing, web site copy
and design by experimenting. Paying while you experiment can lead to feeling
pressure to make something happen right away and frustration if it doesn't.

Just as Andy noted in a recent post, we are all at different places on the same
path. Everyone has to start somewhere. Most of us now know, from personal
experience, that spending money without doing the homework first is an expensive
waste of time. I think it is important to let beginners know all their options
and encourage them to do and learn as much as they can for free.

===========C o n t i n u i n g D i s c u s s i o n (5.1)=============
From:Holly Klaus
Subject:Long Road to Success

Hi Friends,

First to William,
I am glad you have a sense of humour :) Business is a drag without one!

In regards to the second time you have brought up me saying a year. I just
want to make it clear to all those struggling newbies, so they do not
confuse what you said with the point I was making.

In the Internet business, goal setting is as important as anything else we
do in life. We have, or should have both short term and long term goals.
And our long term goals are more likely to be reached if we set short term
goals leading up to them. When someone emails me and says "I need cash
fast, how soon can I make some money I have some bills to pay" I am frank
about the fact that this is not the business for them at this time.
However, if they want to set some longer term goals, they can be
successful in the future.

So, do we set a goal to stay or quit in 3 months. NO. My goal of 1 year,
is an assessment goal. If you have a good product, if you have a
consistent monthly ad budget and if you keep in contact with your leads
and members, in one year normally you will be at a point that you can
assess the value of your efforts and set new goals for success. At that
point you may be earning commissions that can be re-invested to increase
your ad budget. Of course you should be making assessments and formulizing
new goals thru out the year, but lets just move our thinking from 1 to 3
months to at least a year, we don't want to quit because we didn't make
that fast cash overnight. And we don't want to get downhearted because we
set our first goal so far into the future that it seems we will never get

So start with smaller goals, establish long term goals, and make
reasonable valid assessments. Also, it is hardly fair to think that one
person can do exactly the same as another. That is why, rather than
focusing on how much money some certain guru made, focus on a commitment
to the product or program you want to work. Then get the help you need to
make it succeed. There are a lot of excellent products and programs, but
one that will give you real support to success can be the vital key you
need to stick with your goals and reach them. Especially if you are new.

In regards to the negative comment about the easy opportunity I mentioned,
just so you don't fret William about how much money I earn. I am earning
my living online, and managed to do so in less than two years, obviously
FastTRAK is not what did it for
me, as it's only about 1 month old. I was only illustrating that there are
some simple opportunities out there for ones that want to create some cash
flow or play around a bit without much invested. Get their feet wet, they
can do it without a large investment. They can do it without losing money.
They can do it with little knowledge of what they are doing. (And
sometimes that's just enough to make the difference, statistics show that
most households that go bankrupt would not have done so with just $200 per
month extra income!) Or maybe they have a good biz but like a few simple
easy to work streams of income on the side. Not everyone has the same
agenda, we are all individuals. As a matter of fact, what makes something
new happen anyway...someone steps out and makes the plunge!

When someone approaches me, I evaluate their circumstances, their ad
budget and their abilities. Time they can spend on the computer and if
they can work the phone as well. Then I help them with a plan that fits
those guidelines. I can help them not make the same mistakes I did or have
seen others do.

My point, it may be a long road to success, but you can have some small
successes along the way, by setting realistic reachable goals, by getting
the support you need, by staying committed, and by not letting anyone tell
you, you cannot do it. You can be successful, and if a home based Internet
biz is what you are looking for, go for it.

Audra, I appreciate the points you made, ignore the hype, Internet
Marketing is the way for anyone that can stick with it to change their
circumstances who wants to. Its like the dream that most people thought
would never happen for them, most people feel they are stuck in a
situation with no other options.  If you want to achieve your goals, first
you have to set them, listen to those who can help you, and stick with it.

After all, you can be employed for 50 years at the same job, that's
consistency... why not take that same initiative that gets you up every
morning working nine to five and focus some on building an opportunity to
earn your living online. (If that is what you want)

So to recap (this is just a summary William)
Find a product or business that is viable.
Set long and short term goals.
Establish an ad budget. (Whether itsy bitsy or big, establish something
and be consistent!)
Get help.
Stick with it.

sharing the results and is inexpensive to be a part of, you might want to

Hi Heidi,

Is this your own product? One you produce yourself? What is the URL to
your site? If it is your own product (not a MLM or your selling for
someone else) I have some excellent avenues you could utilize that are
very inexpensive and you can actually create some income by using the
service. Not only do you have the opportunity to have your product
advertised for free, it will be in ezine form as long as you can make a
special offer to members.  You can also get information on tested ad
sources so you do not waste any of the little bit of money you have. Also
help with your web pages and a ton of other ideas that would help you
promote your business. I also have a resource to get your product in a
catalogue where others will sell your product for you if you want. If you
are interested in more information, or would like to tell me more details
I can see if there is some place I can direct you that will fit the bill,
or just help you personally, I am happy to do that.

I may suggest that you do a search as well for ezines that may target
health products or similar items. Where you can advertise your product.
This would be a more targeted audience (although as you said, everyone has
a toilet!). You may be able to utilize some inexpensive ezines at first to
get started since you have a limited budget. (Don't forget Adland Pro)
However, I really need to know more about your product, your site, and

Hello Heidi,

I wish you had given us a link. If you need a good ftp program to transfer files
to your site, allow me to recommend ws_ftp. You can download it for free at . I use it and love it.

If you have a lot of stock for sale, why not talk to some retailers? Grocery
stores, bath shops, department stores, hardware stores: anywhere they sell
toilets, seats or bath accessories. You might even be able to sell to schools,
large office buildings and institutions for their use. It might help you to
increase your advertising budget before your site is even ready to go! :)

In regard to marketing it online with your web site, I think you ought to have
fun with an Odor Free toilet Seat Adapter. You might write funny ads like "MY
toilet don't stink!" or "Do you smell that?" (off the top of my head) that could
draw interest at a variety of advertising spots, free and paid. (It says Odor
Free, I think a scratch and sniff spot on your site would be a hoot.) Be sure to
test out your ads before you pay for advertising space.

Let's be clear about that.

FDC makes it's money by advertising on your replicated web site. They
advertise programs that you could easily join yourself and, possibly, make
money with.
It looked like a lot of Commission Junction and Linkshare merchants to me.

Does that explain them. They will waste your time, and their replicated
website is a way for them to get their advertisers in your face. Very
smooth, just like SFI. I wonder if there is a connection?

Subject:John' Olson's grow or go away.

There are always so many things I want to respond to in Adland that I have
a hard time choosing. But, John really hit me head on with this. I joined
a paid opportunity just because someone I knew wouldn't leave me alone
about it, and it was very inexpensive. It's the only one I've ever joined,
and from all the opportunities on the net right now, the only one I will.
It's basically just building a downline so you can make money and get
cycled through all these matrices, etc. However, once I joined, I did
promote it to my subs because it was so cheap. I ended up having people
sign up under me that I made money off of. However, I don't really believe
in the opportunity because there is no PRODUCT. I think the only way to
sell something is to have a product that you believe in and will endorse
because you think it's good. So now, all I'm trying to do with the other
opportunity is just see that my downline gets their money back. I'm in a
quandary about what to do about it because I don't support or believe in
these programs. However, I do believe in the integrity of the person who
runs the program, and we've become good acquaintances. I run the group at
yahoo for people to exchange ideas about promotion, etc. But, I'm still
stuck with a distasteful flavour in my mouth about promoting it to anyone
else. So here I am, promoting something that I disagree with in concept
and I don't know how to extradite myself from. In my own completely honest
defence, I really didn't understand the program from the beginning, and
only later realized it was just your basic pyramid of adding people to
collect so they added people to collect. Yes, you have to grow or go away.
I understand it now, and wish I'd never heard of it. You HAVE to have
products you believe in and not join anything just for the money or you'll
end up like this. Anyone who joins a program out of promised "riches" or
in my case, to shut up a friend will not be successful.

Subject:I think email is in troubles?

I had to respond to this email because what was said is affecting our very
livelihood. It is time people woke up and took a stand. Why should Bogdan
have to check his ezine against spam filter triggers? The responsibility
lies with you, Trevor. As long as we pander to the Isps and email accounts
that use these, we are doomed. I have an ezine, Netsteals News,  and I
have recently informed subs that I need a non filtered email or they're
just not going to receive it. I offer free things to my subs, and I use
the word free. People can go on hiding their head in the sand, but we are
ALL going to be out of business if we don't take a stand. You may think
you're safe for now, because Habeas is going to give you a free header.
Well, you'll be in for a rude awakening when you try to forward a joke to
some of your friends and family, and it gets returned. Because guess what?
You just became a bulk emailer. The only solution to this problem is NOT
getting around the filters, but finally saying enough is enough. Is Bogdan
spamming you? What's so ironic about all this is that Yahoo will filter
these emails, but has one of the highest REAL spam users of anyone.
They'll filter what comes in, but what goes out is a different story. If
any of you are interested in continuing your legitimate business and
putting the real spammers out of business, I suggest you sign the petition
going to the US Government at and join OMPUAC at If you don't, no need crying to me because
you just had to pay to send your free email. There is legislation to fight
the mafia, and the time is now to fight these "mini mafias."

I had a terrible experience with a pay per click company about a month
ago! I did not know much about these companies when I signed up! Well in
about 3 hours I owed over $900.00 dollars, my site went crazy! I blew my
advertising budget for about 3 months. Has this ever happened to anyone
else? I think I am still in shock over what happened to me. I know now to
be a lot more careful with these companies and to set an absolute set
amount at which they have to kill my ad. Good luck to all and be careful
with your advertising
The ad company was even surprised by what happened, guess I just hit too
many popular key words all at once!

please let me know about your advertising experiences.

Subject:Seeking input

Hi all,

I really need the advice of all web marketers out there - especially those
who are creative or who are always on top of the newest technology.

We just developed new software that, whether you love it or hate it,
you have to admit it is unique.

We would be very grateful if you can read this post and share your

The product is 3d animated alarm clock that users download and display
directly on Windows desktops.  Websites offer their visitors these clocks
as free gifts for visiting their site (or signing up to their newsletter,
referring to a friend, or whatever).  Website customizes these clocks with
many discrete ads (such as logo in the clock face, banner in clock menu,
logo as desktop icon, etc.).  So whenever clock users check the time or
view their desktops, they see these "camouflaged" ads.  Best of all, the clocks
link directly to websites, so clock users have numerous chances to click
through and revisit the site they downloaded from.

Clocks can also be preloaded with alarms that pop-up directly on users'
desktops.  These alarms can be used to notify clock users of special sales
or events, but even more so, can be used to add extra value to the clocks
(such as used to pop-up with daily tips or jokes, to display contest
notifications, etc.)  These are preloaded alarms, so not spyware.

We designed these alarm clocks so that every site can customize them to be
attractive for their specific site audience.  The clocks have many features
such as alarms and reminders and come in many themed models.  Every
website chooses clock model to target its audience and can add in pop up alarms
that tie into the general website theme.  (For example, a pet store can
advertise "download our fish feeding alarm clock to remember to feed your fish", a
website promoting "no smoking" can customize the clock to pop up with a
different "no smoking" slogan everyday, an entertainment site can use the clock to pop up with a different contest every week, etc).

If you can just think about your own website for a moment:

(1) Do you think website visitors would download these free gift
clocks?  Could you think of ways you can customize or present these clocks
to make them useful for your specific audience?
(2) Do you think such a product would bring in repeat traffic?
(3) Do you think clock users would develop a trusting relationship with
the site they downloaded the clock from?
(4) Would you use a product that is spyware to promote a product or would
you prefer a product that is safe for users, even if it is less flexible for
(5) What types of sites or companies would such a product help?

Thank you so much for your time,

If you'd like to respond personally my email is

Subject:More personalization is needed to succeed

     Good day all,

My input for what my main beef is that through all of my internet
experiences is that no one is WILLING to really teach anyone to truly
succeed. Most people trying to believe in something to promote, or even
having the technique to know how to promote. There are many issues with
internet marketing that are not dealt with. I am not an expert, but if
some one would want to pick my brain, I am sure, that I could help in some
small way to jumpstart someone to the next level. If the true goal is not
to make money, or to create a mainstream , trained, kickin and takin no
names kind of circle, group of successful people.

We owe it to ourselves as well as to those future internet marketers that
are yearning for the knowledge and will be the future of internet
marketing. Our seed in growing the markets of the future.

Subject: The key to successful advertising

Many of us will like to be successful on the internet, what more to make
an honest dollar. But yet many of us truly fail in our attempt.
The true key to successful advertising, depends on these
factors. These are motivations, remember, Rome was NOT
built in a day. Also one need to be creative, but truthful in their
advertising, why try and fool a visitor by giving then inaccurate info?
surely you will not only get his or her attentions, but you will also
show them that you conduct dishonest business. It very important
that one get there info and ads correct.
Even though a customer might not wish to buy he or she will still visit
due to your honest advertising practice. Also having an auto responder
might do more harm to your business than good. Reasons are
with an auto responder, "specific information's" which your customer's
sent you are not always given. It's more like asking various questions and
getting the same answer 100 times. Remember each visitor is different
and may need your individual attention. LET'S US ALL TRY TO GIVE

=====================Site Review Response  (1)===============
From: Franklin Banker

Thanks for all of your SPEPPER site reviews

I really appreciate the time taken by several of you to review our new
little site

Most of the comments were positive, and that makes us very happy. The
honest criticisms are being reviewed by us sincerely. Some corrections
have already been made.

I was mortified to realize that I had misspelled the word "Restauruants"
on the navigation side of every page! Thanks Robert Lee !  Also, Jennifer
Holman pointed out our unintentional use of a famous person's image on the
newspaper in one of our graphics. I went in and kind of "rubbed" him out.
I hope that fixes it, at least for now. We will be doing more design as we
go, while striving to keep it simple overall.

Jennifer, my wife agrees with you about the graphic with the female image
on the "Spepper Story" page. Nathan's wife also felt as you did, so some
further review will be forthcoming on that matter.

We had an interview with News4 reporter Steve Lusk on February 28, and it
has been picked up and shown on
several network affiliates around the country. Here in Denver, the
Westword Magazine did quite a story about Spepper as well.

We are grateful for your input. Our meeting today was over the phone, but
we will address all the suggestions from you Adlanders in another day or

I appreciate your comments very much!

Thanks to SkyDon, Curtis, Jennifer, John and Robert !!
We have listed all of your ideas for review.
