Subject:Spam Issue

Just me again.  I have been replying and watching this spam issue long
before it was a hot topic.  I said long ago that if we keep
complaining it will cost money to send e-mail just like snail mail and I
was ridiculed as dumb.  I have pretty much ignored the
issue as the internet losses its appeal to me as a viable way of making
income (there are exceptions to every rule, how many
people do you know that make there living on the internet.....really) and
have watched the big boys take it over.  I have also
watched the strategy as the big boys waited to let the little guys test
the internet waters and then came in after they new it was
safe and profitable. Ever feel like a test dummy?  I am not saying that
money can not be made on the internet today however it
is not much easier now on the internet to make a buck as it would be in
the real world.

With that said I was reading in newsletter number 338 comments by Deirdre
Jones and was very much in agreement on most of
the comments, however I would like to add to it as far as my opinion goes.

First and foremost I would like to comment to Deirdre's first comment that

"I have been wondering why is it
that mega-giants like Amazon, Walmart, Barnes and Noble, AOL, etc. (these
companies are used for illustrative purposes only) spam millions of people
and almost no one cries foul?"

Quite frankly these companies are accountable with a good return address.
Spam from these companies for me have never
been a problem.  I know that sometimes they have associates that do not
follow there rules and spam however I have been an
affiliate to many of these companies and know they do not tolerate spam,

Then you say:

"However, when the majority of people think of spam, they immediately
of those "hinky" emails that offer solutions to enlarge body parts,
pornography, or some ezine that we subscribed to that we forgot about
(sounds oddly familiar, heh?)."

Dam right I do, especially when I ask repeatedly to a bad remove link to
have it stopped and it keeps coming!

With that said I do agree with allot of the other comments such as:

"What bothers me the most is that you have these self-appointed watchdogs
that do not even allow you to defend yourself before you are blacklisted
and your ISP shuts you down." Amen..... and

Most email programs come with a filter tool.........There are also
numerous free programs that
allow you to review your email before you download it to your computer,
such as MailWasher at  Why are we not using
these free resources?

TOTALLY AGREE HERE TO, to much complaining brings in big business or big
brother and that's a fact!
I do agree that complaining and censorship by our ISP's is totally wrong
and is the beginning of the end to free e-mail.

And this statement in your comments that all should take to heart and to
me is the core of the truth is the following:

"I am appealing to
you to make your voice heard in the fight against spam by using email
RESPONSIBLY and refusing to accept what these huge companies are trying to
shove down our throats."

Right on Deirdre, if you have information as to where to write maybe you
can share it with us.

Thank you Deirdre for your comments and keep the faith.

Subject:I just received SPAM offering to sell me anti-spam protection

In response to Julie Frost's post in issue 340:

Like you I have received spam mails trying to sell me anti-spam software
and online anti-spam solutions.

There are quite a few online solutions but one that I would advise people
to leave well alone is "Spam Arrest" who have successfully managed to get
themselves blacklisted for spamming. If anyone is currently using their
service you already know that every person attempting to send you mail has
to go online and double confirm that they are who they say they are before
their mail will reach you. But did you know that in the small print of
your contract with Spam Arrest they reserve the right to add every
confirmation to their mailing list! They then follow up trying to sell
YOUR 'stolen' contact their service.

Bad already but now consider that their privacy policy states they may
sell on these details to partner sites and that the action of a mail
sender confirming his identity is considered to be him opting-in to their
mailing list. Is that below the belt or what!

Julie, you asked what solutions there are and I will recommend you to one
that gets mentioned over and over again in this newsletter because it is
excellent and totally unobtrusive. MailWasher is available as a free
download from They also have a Professional
version available which I personally use because it is dynamite (see

MailWasher checks your mail on your ISP's server before you download it to
your machine. It automatically selects all viruses to be deleted and most
well known spam mails. You get to either retain messages, delete them,
bounce them back to the sender (even if they were relayed through multiple
nodes), and add the sender or the domain sending them to your blacklist
for automatic deletion in future. You can set it up so that known spam
doesn't even appear in your list. Once all the garbage is deleted you
click on the Process button and your email program opens for you to
download whatever you have kept.

Not only is this the perfect solution to spam but in my opinion Microsoft
and Netscape should build it in to their email programs as a standard
feature. If they did that then spammers would never get their mails on our
desktops and if nobody ever reads their rubbish it will no longer be
profitable to them to spend money on bulk mailing.

The flaw in my suggestion is that Microsoft seem to have abandoned
development of Internet Explorer as we are still running with version 6.0,
now largely overshadowed by competitors.

Well thanks to MailWasher we don't have to rely on Microsoft or any online
service to sort out our spam problems. It's people who refuse to use such
software that are feeding the online services as well as leeches like

Hi Ginger, and Everyone!

I recently did an "in-depth" article about Storm Pay which was published
in the last edition of my newsletter which went out April 1.  I did so, as
many of my subscribers have Pay Pal (much dirt on them these days seems to
be circulating), and they were concerned about staying with Pay Pal, and
had asked me if I had any knowledge of Storm Pay.  I had an account with
them, so I "created problems" for myself, deposited money, withdrew money,
etc., and then published the results of my little "investigation" for my
subscribers.  There are a few surprising things about Storm Pay.

If anyone wants a copy of the last issue, just email me and I'll forward
it.  Both Pay Pal and Storm Pay "bother" me, as there is no obvious
regulation of either one, unlike banks, credit card merchant accounts, or
other financial institutions.  With regulation, they can probably be a
very viable source of online payment, but without it, obviously, problems
will arise.

First, an explanation. ONLY those members that used a Yahoo email address
to receive email were removed from this database...NO others.
Unfortunately, we lost 18 members, but hopefully, they will be back.
Yes, the headline is correct...Habeas dropped the suit against Clickbank.
And here is something to think about. Please read the earlier remarks by
Anne Mitchell, CEO of Habeas, Inc.:
Clickbank's role in the suit also bewildered Stuchinski, since
the company only handles the online-payment system for the
e-book. Habeas named Clickbank and Keynetics as co-defendants,
saying they acted as middleman by running the affiliate program
for Stuchinski.

"They're all benefiting from the infringement of our trademark,
so they're all culpable" Mitchell said. "Affiliate spam is one of
the biggest producers of the spam that eating up the Internet now."
And today, her comment is:
"ClickBank has been the model of responsibility, said Mitchell.
It is important to understand that intellectual property law
requires us to vigorously protect our trademark, and privacy
concerns dictate that we provide legal authority under which
someone may reveal their user's identity and other information.
The fact that we named ClickBank in our lawsuit against their
user should in no way be taken to mean that ClickBank was engaged
in spamming."
What she's doing is trying to claim now that they only sued
ClickBank to make them give Habeas information on their client -
Stuchinski.  Which is a crock since she could have gotten a
simple court order for that.
As always, this lets me feel that Habeas has become even more dangerous
that we may have anticipated. The fact that they appear to be talking out
of BOTH sides of their mouths means that NOTHING they say should be 100%
believed. DOES THIS make you wonder WHEN the "free" in personal Habeas
licences will not mean "FREE"?? OR does the comment that Habeas is NOT
trying to dominate the world's email system mean that is the way it REALLY
is?? OR does it mean that they are telling ISP's to NOT block email that is
NOT Habeas "warranted" should be taken as accurate??

Anyway, read the full story:

No one has the "right" to police the Internet. Yet that is what the Habeas
people are trying to do, in a business sense. Force people that use email

This is the type of program that will fade away, if ignored.
And that is precisely what I will be doing.

From:Claire Solt
Subject:Targeted Advertising

The last issue seems to have two concerns which appear to be aimed right at
each other. First, there is the continuing discussion of spam and efforts
to avoid it. Then there are questions from new people about how to
advertise their opportunities, free.

A lot of this problem, I think, derives from the fact that people really
don't understand what targeted advertising is, how it works, and how to
work it.

Start with building a profile of the buyer. Who is the typical buyer of
your product? This is demographics. Age, income, geography, sex,
education, hobbies are correlates that may be components.

You find out the profile by asking the company you represent or by polling
your customers.

Once you know the profile, you can target either by the ads themselves or
by choosing the venue. You can word your ad in such a way that it appeals
to those who fit the profile and not to others.

Look at my signature ad. It says: "Granny is a Marketing and Training
Pro". I deliberately included the word "Granny", because I know that most
of the people who have signed up in my downline are senior citizens. So, I
announce: Hey seniors! This is for you.
Teens are likely to pass this one by.

Now, if I don't want teens, I am not going to buy ad time on MTV, but I
will buy CBS News, won't I. Why? Because they have the elder viewers.
Likewise, on the internet, I will place my ads where my profile customers
are most likely to congregate. When I do that, I don't offend many people,
because my ad fits the milieu.

My signature ad is also what is called a tight ad. That means it tells you
what the product is: "Learn Online Marketing". Tight ads should pull
responses mainly from people who are interested in that product line. That
is opposed to "loose ads" of general come-ons Like "Find Out What Everyone
is Talking About."

Most spam complaints are probably about advertising that is loose and not

When you target your ads to the profile of your customers and use tight
ads that specify your product line your advertising produces leads. Leads
are people who have indicated an interest in your product. They respond to
your ad. Online they can do this in a number of ways. Some of these ways
may be wrongly considered as spam, if you are not careful. Or, you may get
so many responses, you may throw them all out.

What you should be doing is qualifying these responses to see which ones
you can convert to sales. You may have seen explanations of a funnel.
There is a difference between a lead and a prospect. A lead has just shown
some interest. A prospect also has a need for your product now and the
ability to pay for it.

The advertising I do produces thousands of emails a day, and I have
learned to be grateful for it. I direct it to a Yahoo account where I can
qualify the leads. That email is full of messages from people who are
begging for a response. (There is also lots of gratuitous mail, to be

As I am most interested in finding good marketers to associate with, I
begin by simply replying with Thanks, my name and phone# and signature ad
to those that interest me. (About ten/day)

That way I find out which people are aggressive and self-assured enough to
pick up the phone and call me. We then get a chance to discuss whether we
have a basis for working together. If we exchange any further emails, they
will not be spam.

Inviting people to call me is a very hard qualifier, and it gets me only
the best people. I get lots of clicks on my signature ad too.

My points are these: Targeted advertising produces targeted responses
called leads. Qualifying leads produces requests for more information,
prospects and sales. Correct use of autoresponder follow-up can improve the
yield of qualified leads or opt-ins.

Most spam results from not understanding these basics.
If you profile your customer and target your ad to that type of person and
put that ad in places where they can self select and respond, you are
least likely to offend. However, You must also be ready to remarket these
responders, because you know that first responders do not always have
enough information, need, or timing to buy on the first exposure. Using an
autoresponder lets people who decide that they are just not interested any
more quietly opt out.

In the real world, it is possible to buy leads which are demographically
specific and to start there. However, I have not seen any lead company on
the internet that is selling anything as leads that I consider leads. So,
develop them yourself, and when you do, don't treat them as spam.

Subject:GPTR Cheating and its effect

One more high paying GPTR site is facing problem due to cheaters. As the
webmaster here is a wily one and have taken very stern action against
members who wantonly tried to short circuit the system for gain.  Since
this site pays 5 cents for each click, the cheats run up more money at the
site and it not only drain the resources of the site owner, but also
create less output for the advertisers.  This cheating could scare away
the advertisers.  Knowing this and as to avoid such an occurrence, the
other day the webmaster declared, very rightly,  that if he finds just one
attempt at cheating, the member concerned would  be ousted from the
programme with no recourse to  appeal. Only such stern action would
succeed in weeding out the baddesters and I do hope his efforts pays off
and he could run his site with no more hitches and get less headache from
the cheaters.

When will all these cheatings stop and the participating members  learn to
behave responsibly???

Hi Chuck;

I think you site looks really good and it navigates wonderfully.  I
couldn't figure out why your site exists.  It doesn't actually say
anything, it is just kind of there.

In order to be effective, in sales, you need to identify a problem and
provide the solution.  If I had arrived through a search engine or link, I
would not have stayed long because your site is just another e-business
site and doesn't have a unique selling point.

You need to determine what your visitors want and be very clear about how
you can fill that want.  There needs to be a reason your visitors arrive
and a reason for them to buy.

As far as how your web site looks, it looks as good as any I have reviewed
here at the Digest.

I don't think it is going to be successful because it doesn't answer the
questions that are in every visitor's mind, What is in it for me?  Can
this help me and if I buy it, will it work?  Why should I buy this?

From:Cathy Wagner

Hi Chuck,

I think you have a very nice looking site, but your sales copy is lacking. Your
target prospect is someone who sees lots and lots of sites that offer to show
them how to make money online. While your copy may seem striking, it really just
makes the same promises as dozens of other sites. If you want to catch the
attention of those who are interested in building a business online, you must
tell them right away exactly what you will do for them and why you are
different. (I recently made this kind of change to my own home page and it now
has a click through rate of 80%!)

Your home page says you will show us exactly, step by step, how to make a living
online, but when I looked at your resources, all I saw were ebooks and lots of
links to sites sorted by type without any description as to why one might choose
one over another.

For example, you have 3 hosting companies listed. Why 3? Are you using all of
them? What makes one different from the others? Are you just an affiliate of

I understand that your primary products are the ebooks, but that is not what I
expected when I saw that you would show us, step by step, how to earn a living
online. I expected some kind of expertise from you, not a list of ebooks where I
can find the information for myself, for a price.

I clicked through to "Make a Living Online," skimmed the 5 page sales letter to
find a price of $150! Yes, there are lots of bonuses, but I always recommend
that beginners do and learn as much as they can for free. Starting off making
investments before you have even seen the lay of the land (so to speak) is the
surest way to frustration and disappointment. Frustrated and disappointed
customers will not return, except maybe to complain.

I suggest you rethink your concept. What exactly are you trying to do with your
site? If you want to sell ebooks, say you are selling ebooks that you have used
and found to be helpful. Give specifics, like this book increased my earnings by
whatever percent or perhaps give a tidbit from each book or something that you
learned that will excite visitors to want to learn more.

If you want to be a resource site, provide more complete descriptions of your
list of resources.

Whatever you decide, make sure you reflect your actual content on your home
page. Don't just tell them that you will show them how to make a living, be

One other note: it is in your best interest to make the links to your ebooks and
resources open in a new window. That way your visitors stay at your site while
they look at what you are offering. The html code looks like this <a href="YOUR

Hope this helps.

of the doubt, the idea of squashing sp*m was a fairly
decent idea. I know my inbox runneth over with junk I
never asked for... mostly spiders pulling addresses
from websites and b*lk mailers. Amazingly, of course,
the one thing that always manages to get through is
the p*r* - trust me something I NEVER asked to
receive, but it gets through just fine.

Okay, so back along the way a problem was recognized.

Now, let's take a journey back a few decades...

Anyone remember when they burned books back in Nazi
Germany? Sure enough, someone thought they could
decide "for the betterment of all" what should and
should not be read.

Now stop and think!

If you'd lived back then would you have gaily thrown
your books onto the bonfires, or would you have done
your best to try to stop the insanity?

Here's a team of people willing to go to bat for YOUR
basic right and freedom to use the internet as you see

They've been circulating information trying to wake
you up and get you to DO SOMETHING, to stop the book
burning - to act on your own behalf!

I found out today that membership is feeble at best,
publishers write to me telling me that subscribers are
complaining (!) about hearing about it, and some actually
unsubscribe because of a publisher's desire
to make them aware of the neo-Nazi book burners online
working extremely hard to make YOUR LIFE hell.

My question is, "Are you just going to sit there and
let them do this?"

If yes, then do not be surprised when suddenly one day
your Cousin Sally emails (assuming her letter gets
through to you) asking why don't you ever write to her
anymore? And you know you've written 10 times in the
past month!

Back along the way there was a hoax going around about
paying a nickel an email. We all researched it and
discovered, yep, just another hoax.

Then, while we all remained complacent about our own
personal freedoms online, a group of individuals snuck
in through the backdoor. They ARE poised on the brink
of changing the way YOU use your email... forever!

Do YOU want to be sitting here a month from now saying
to yourself, "Damn! If I'd only done something, it
might have helped!"

Click this link now. Read. MAKE yourself aware of
what's going on. JOIN. Part with even a buck if you
can spare it. Do NOT say to yourself, "Yeah, yeah.
I'll do it later." It won't take but a few seconds
of your time... Do it now.

Add your name to the petition (god forbid but
apparently it's become necessary!) to Congress. You do
NOT have to be a U.S. citizen to sign this puppy.

Darn it... get INVOLVED!

DON'T just sit there waiting once again for someone
to save you. Without numbers, yes the "little people"
like you and me can kiss our email as we now know it

What's next? Reading personal emails and censorship?
Don't turn you back for a moment...

Forget the typical resource box, click the link and make
yourself heard. Stand up for yourself and for the rights
of everyone everywhere! This is a world-wide issue.

=====================Joke of the Day   (1)===============

A young woman wasn't feeling well, and asked one her
co-workers to recommend a physician. "I know a great one in
the city, but he is very expensive. Five hundred dollars for the
first visit, and one hundred dollars for each one after that."

The woman went to the doctor's office and, trying to save a
little money, cheerily announced. "I'm back!"

Not fooled for a second, the doctor quickly examined her
and said, "Very good, just continue the treatment I prescribed
on your last visit."

Let's hear from you......
