"The 5 Biggest Mistakes Almost All Web Designers Make -- And Why These

Joke of the Day

Word from Moderator
------------------------------

We are right smack in the busiest season of the year for businesses of every type.
Consumers are making their purchases for the holidays. Everyone is trying to find a
way to make “a few extra bucks” in order to give as much as they can to their
families for the holidays. This is a time that most people are thinking short-term:
“let’s make it to Christmas”. That’s terrific if you are selling X-mas tree ornaments
or are managing “doublers” and “triplers”, but what about “normal” businesses? It’s
easy to forget that a “normal” business is a long-term investment. It takes time,
dedication and work to build it up. Sometimes you have to sacrifice the short term
for the long term and it’s a hard choice to make. I guess you need to do a balancing
act here. Don’t leave your kids without presents, but do keep in mind that after New
Year’s is over, January 2nd will follow. Drink one less bottle of whiskey and invest
the money in a good, solid opportunity, or in something that will help your long-term
business grow.

Re: Is 100% Unique Traffic Worth More?
From: Harvey Turner

It is true that your best prospects for purchases are those that have seen your
messages/Web page a number of times.

It is true that your best prospects for new offers are your current customers.

It is also true that each day, each week, and each month - you will lose a percentage
of these subscribers/prospects/customers.

They will move, die, change ISPs and opt out of your mailing list.

So it is true that you need a never ending supply of Unique visitors to build and
maintain your list. You can never "stay in one place". You will either be growing or
falling back in business.

Hope this helps.

Re: How to get visitors to your website.
From: Douglas Sutter

Hi Amalia,

I would like to respond, and I sure hope that Bogdan doesn't consider this an ad. If
you do Bogdan then please rewrite this so members can benefit.

I own resale rights to Graham Hamer's The Traffic Jam Formula and to help others
needing hits, I will GIVE it to them. Graham's formula provides step by step
instructions that will help anyone get over 1 million hits to their web site.

So anyone who needs more hits, go ahead and grab this with my compliments.
What the heck, it's the holidays. :o)

RE: Help to get traffic to website
From: GORDON GALLER

I am glad to welcome anyone who is trying their hand at working on the internet
regardless of venture. As for generating traffic there are several good ways to do so
that I have found and a lot of free places to go to get started if you’re working with a
tight budget.

If you would like a list of some of the sources I use then let me know and I will be
glad to share them with you. HOWEVER, you must use search engine advertising
and optimizing. If you don't know what they are then you may want to do a little
home work. Also you want to develop contacts with other website owners and
exchange links. This is simple to do by adding a links page to your site and putting a
link to the site you have the agreement with on this page and they will do the same.
This causes your link popularity to go up and increases your rating in the search
engines.
Concentrate on heavy on engines like Google since they are the big ones. They will
be the ones you want to rank high in and the rest will follow.

I do have many more things I could share however I do realize that space is limited
here in the Digest so if you or anyone else would like to contact me for help and a
list of services I use (free of charge) Then feel free to email me directly and I will
send you the list.

Bogdan keep up the excellent work and I hope the last issue is the only one I miss.

Re: In Response to John's Question
From: Rebecca Beasley

One thing that will help to drive traffic to you site is a links page.
I have several of them, but I got a little weary of posting links to sites every day and
finally got one that's more automated.

Examples here.
http://www.primo-hosting.com/links.html
http://www.youcanearnfromhome.com/partners.html

Here is the new one.
http://links.primo-hosting.com

Another thing that helps a lot is joining webrings. Your webring nav bar goes on
everyone's page and your site is included in all the sites in the ring, so when people
use the navbar to visit sites, they visit yours too.

I have webrings on all my pages. And a lot of people have been running webrings for
years, and visit frequently.

Having a guestbook or newsletter is a must.

Your guests will sign your guestbook, and they'll leave their contact information and
their website url on your page so you really need to visit their site also and maybe
ask them for a link trade.

Link trading helps improve your search engine rankings tremendously if it's done
right.

You'll also see on my http://www.youcanearnfromhome.com/ There is a safelist and
forum tab also. I give my visitors a way to post ads for free, and recommend other
programs that will help them to get more out of their own marketing.

I also showcase certain ones that have linked with me, and give them top billing.

On my http://links.primo-hosting.com they have the option of buying advertising as
well. They can also get an ad in my newsletter.

And if you're active in Adland Pro you already know about the Adland Pro
community pages, and you can create your own forum there and write about topics
that interest your readers and keep them coming back for more.

This might seem like a lot of work, but it's very much worth the effort.

I discovered another technique just out of plain old curiosity to see if it would work.
I did a link popularity search on my site and came back with about 48 links, and
knowing who is actually linking to you is a great asset. But what I did was, I took the
actual search page and made a page out of it. I did this for both of my sites.
http://www.primo-hosting.com/primo_search.htm
http://www.youcanearnfromhome.com/search.htm

Now I run these in the traffic exchanges and give people a way to do this for
themselves as well.

You'll see more actual visitors than you would see just running click exchanges. The
modern ways are good for what they're worth, which is saving time, but for actually
driving traffic, I would rather stick to the tried and true methods. The personal
approach is always the better.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Beasley

Re: Affiliate Link Hijacking Solution..
From: Geoff Dodd

Hi Eve, Doug..

Personally I'd avoid using a javascript solution to this vexing problem that's costing
us all tons of income… because there's a simpler way!

Mike Chen, the inventor of 'MakeYourOwnSoftware' showed that simply 'calling a
frameset' does this cloaking job very neatly.

Confused? The href you specify is your Affiliate URL. In effect, you create a single
frame frameset.

Here's a tiny app. you can download that cloaks your affiliate link using the above
method.

(Note: edit the result in notepad and NOT in a WYSIWYG editor, i.e. NOT in
Dreamweaver / Frontpage as they alter the code created.)

Hi Amalia,

I'd like to take a moment and once again tell you that you're doing a wonderful job
with the Digest! Please keep up the good work...

I haven't fallen asleep but I have felt somewhat "burned out" recently. It happens
from time to time...

Okay - the future of online business? It's just my opinion at this moment but the way
I feel about it today is that there are only a couple of things that stand out as big
changes and you and I are involved in one of them, VOIP with Ubifone. I think this
is going to make a large impact on the way we market online. The opportunity to get
involved one on one with prospects in a setting about as close to face to face that we
can get is very exciting for me! Plus it is Global! Not like the old days where you
would be restricted to folks in your office or at the store or faceless online. Quite a
change...

Other than that I think, at least for the short run, things will remain about the same –
i.e. opp's (both real and not so real) will come and go like normal and we'll have to
continue to weed the bad ones out of the good ones and keep editing, editing, editing
LOL. For me, I try to perceive this as "job security" <g>.
Just some quick thoughts in the hope that we can get a discussion going.

On another note - I know you've seen Trina's post about these forums turning into
amateur hour; I feel exactly the same way. But I have no idea how to change it.
People will do what they will do. I guess the future will hold to normal again with
this. They'll learn and grow and go about things in a more professional manner
eventually.

I Am Lovin' Life!

Topic: WAKE UP CALL
From: Mark Wade

Hi Again Amalia,

In the last hour I've had some additional thoughts...

As I do each day, I empty all my email accounts of the innumerable pieces of
garbage I receive daily. It has gotten a LOT easier! The online email providers I use
(free) have changed the way they're doing things. Free email accounts have grown!
And they're really using their filters, as we all know. But it is a pleasure to be able to
go to a spam folder, look through it and redirect what is not spam to my inbox and
then just delete the contents of the folder.

Anyway, to get back to the subject, what I also believe (and I may be in the minority)
is that email marketing is going to lose its power in the coming short term! I actually
believe that spam, well, it might not go away, but at the least I believe that it has
become such a scourge that it is going to be ignored more and more and once folks
have the ability to delete it with ease its marketing strength will diminish a lot. I see
all these list development opp's and I am convinced that the people that view them as
a boon to those who initially created them are correct. They will not be that
beneficial in the long run to those who sign up below and think that they are their
own. Lists that are developed through your own web site, from your own host, (see
Jim Daniels), are another story! They will still be subject to filters but the personal
relationship is of the utmost importance!

And that leads me to this - I have talked about it before. Creating and maintaining
your OWN web site. I don't have a web site that receives a million hits a day. BUT –
and I see this as much more important, when I check my stats and in spite of all the
promotional efforts I put in, more than 50% of the hits are from - Search Engines!
So, I feel that - with email losing its power, once folks learn that getting an affiliate
URL indexed by the search engines is darn near impossible, we will get back to what
is important on the Internet and has been from the beginning! CONTENT! On your
OWN site!

Why is it that so many pass on the opportunity for all that Free Advertising? Not to
mention how targeted that advertising is?

Something else... geez... stop me if I'm rambling LOL - I know that Trina is involved
in this and I do READ (SitePro News) about what's going on online, is Blogging and
RSS. I'm just going to post a couple of URLs for your consideration from SitePro
News and see what you think.

Dating sites/background checks
From: William Jaroske

I have heard on the local news that there will be legislation coming soon requiring
Online Dating websites to require background security checks on all of their users.

I wonder if anyone thinks it will make Online dating much safer?

I am hearing too many horror stories about people meeting other people on the net
find out the person they met has a criminal record, or a deranged lunatic.

You can read here about "Michigan approves criminal background check bill"
http://www.corante.com/dating/archives/michigan_approves_criminal_background_check_bill.php

And True Launches Background Check Legislation
http://www.corante.com/dating/archives/true_launches_background_check_legislation.php

My personal view on this is that if a dating site your signed up with are not doing
background checks should either be dumped and avoided all together. Any others
care to comment?

ARE THE BANKS RIPPING US OFF?
From: Rudolph Burgzorg

Consider This:

You place $1,000 in an investment account fixed for a year. Rates vary from bank to
bank and country to country, so we will use 12% per annum as an example. Your
money after a year, with monthly interest compounded, will return you around
$1,126 only.

The bank takes your cash and invests it in an international portfolio where they get
say 25% compounded. What do they get back? On your $1,000 alone, they will
return a total amount of $14,550. There is a massive difference $14,550 - your lousy
$126 = $14,424 their profit!

I am assuming that in the more competitive markets Banks may give you 12%
Interest. Here in the Bahamas the most you will get is a 3% Interest on $1,000.

Now, one of the advantages in living in a Democracy is that the people of average
means could form themselves into Associations to change their condition. The
Rochdale Pioneers is a striking example of the power of the people to improve their
economic condition in a Democracy. As a result of their effort Co-operatives have
been and are giving the average person a great sense of economic empowerment.

It would appear to me, therefore, that in this new age of Information the person of
average means could easily find another source of Investment in which he/she can
earn higher Interest Rates on his/her Bank Fixed Deposit.

Competition is the driving force behind Capitalism.
This being so I have every reason to believe that the Banks would be forced to adjust
their rates if large segments of its customers base were to look for alternative
Investment opportunities.
What do you think?

"The 5 Biggest Mistakes Almost All Web Designers Make -- And Why These
Mistakes Could Cost YOU A Fortune!"
=======================================================

By Jason Mangrum, CEO - ImmWebDesign.com

Huge Mistake #1: Creating a Website with Flash -- Did you know in a recent study,
top internet marketers discovered that having a website created with Flash, actually
DECREASED the response from prospects and customers by as much as three-
hundred-and-seventy percent?

Here's why: Your prospects and customers are most likely visiting your website
using all types of different computers, connection speeds and internet configuration
settings...

What may look GREAT to one visitor may not even appear for another! You could
very easily have shelled out hundreds or even thousands of dollars to have a website
created using the Flash technology, only to find out that some of your visitors will
never see it! (Not to mention the loading times can cause your visitor to close your
site, never to return again.)

Huge Mistake #2: The "Internet Catalog" Approach -- You see this everywhere.
Good, honest and hardworking businessmen and women get online to sell their
products or services, and have a site created for them that contains a link to just
about everything they offer on one page. Their thinking goes along the lines of,
"...well, I don't want to leave anyone out. If they come to my site, I want to make
sure I have what they're looking for..." -- This way of thinking could not be further
from the truth.

Here's why: There's an ancient rule that goes back to the very beginning of direct-
marketing on the internet, taught by the richest, most legendary and well-respected
internet marketers of all time...

"When you give your prospects too many choices, they become confused and aren't
sure what to do next. Confused people never buy anything."

Huge Mistake #3: Optimizing Your Sales Site for the Search Engines -- You'll see
this taught in nearly every "internet marketing" course, manual or eBook out there...
"You must optimize every page of your website for the search engines!" -- In fact,
this false teaching is accepted as 'gospel truth' so often that most web designers will
offer to do this for you at no, or little extra cost...

What they DON'T understand is that certain words and phrases must be either re-
worded (to make it "keyword rich") or taken out completely, just to be looked upon
highly by the mighty search engines -- and this could KILL your sales, literally
overnight.

Here's why: When you or a hired web designer optimize your SALES page (i.e. any
web page designed to sell your products and services) to get a higher listing in the
search engines, you're going to have to sacrifice the pulling-power of your sales copy
(i.e. written sales material) just to get those higher listings. Sure, this can bring you
more traffic -- but what good is all the traffic in the world, if your visitors arrive at
your website and aren't compelled enough to read why they should order your
product?

For years, it has been taught that you should always try to find a "balance" of SEO
(Search-Engine-Optimization) mixed with promotional copy designed to sell your
products and services...

WRONG AGAIN! -- The truth is that you should NEVER optimize your sales page
for the Search Engines. Instead, you should create tiny "entry pages" for each
keyword related to your product or service, (highly optimized for the Search
Engines) and have them link to your main sales site! (We can show you exactly how
to do this quickly and easily and get *massive* targeted traffic from the Search
Engines - without ever *touching* your sales site!)

Huge Mistake #4: Having a "Graphics-Based" Website -- Sure, graphics can
certainly help us to visualize a particular situation or circumstance, product or
service... But did you know that having a graphically-driven website can actually
DISTRACT your visitor away from your sales message?

After all, your sales message (or "web copy") is THE #1 most important factor in a
website that makes money. If your visitors are paying more attention to your
"professional graphics" than your sales message... you've just lost another sale.

Here's why: You've got approximately seven seconds from the time your visitor
arrives at your site, to the time they decide whether to buy your product, get more
information or LEAVE. If you've got a graphically-intensive website, your website
will most likely still be loading past your seven-second time limit.

That's a "customer-killer" in and of itself - however, the real reason lies within the
fact that the bigger, brighter and more beautiful your graphics are, the more they will
distract your visitor from your sales message. And if your visitor is distracted even
for one second, it could mean the difference between getting a sale, and losing a
customer.

Huge Mistake #5: Designing a Website with ZERO Marketing Experience -- Most
web designers have no idea how to make money on the internet, with anything other
than their design services. It's not their fault - they simply have no or very little
marketing and sales experience. After all, they're just website designers...

However, having your website designed by someone with ZERO internet marketing
experience is like buying a street-car without an engine... it won't go anywhere, and
it'll just waste your time and money!

Customer: "You've got to fix my computer. I urgently need to print a document, but
the computer won't boot properly."
Tech Support: "What does it say?"
Customer: "Something about an error and non-system disk."
Tech Support: "Look at your machine. Is there a floppy inside?"
Customer: "No, but there's a sticker saying there's an Intel inside."

Tech Support: "Just call us back if there's a problem. We're open 24 hours."
Customer: "Is that Eastern time?"

Tech Support: "Ok, now click your left mouse button."
Customer: (silence) "But I only have one mouse."

Customer: "Excuse me can I use this disk? It has a hole in it.

Tech Support: "Do you have 3 1/2 inch diskettes?"
Customer: "No, I only have 3 of them."

Tech Support: "I need you to right-click on the Open Desktop."
Customer: "Ok."
Tech Support: "Did you get a pop-up menu?"
Customer: "No."
Tech Support: "Ok. Right click again. Do you see a pop-up menu?"
Customer: "No."
Tech Support: "Ok, sir. Can you tell me what you have done up until this point?"
Customer: "Sure, you told me to write 'click' and I wrote 'click'."

Customer: "Now what do I do?"
Tech Support: "What is the prompt on the screen?"
Customer: "It's asking for 'Enter Your Last Name.'"
Tech Support: "Ok, so type in your last name."
Customer: "How do you spell that?"

Customer: "I received the software update you sent, but I am still getting the same

Tech Support: "Did you install the update?"
Customer: "No. Oh, am I supposed to install it to get it to work?"
