============ Word from Moderator =============
Inspite of my difficulties in getting out some earlier issues I
enjoyed once again sitting in as moderator is Bogdan's absence.
I wish to all of you a great New Year and success with your online
businesses. Now, just a couple of comments that will help those who
want to respond to some of the posts. When you post, if you would
please, sign with your full legal name besides either a website or
email. It makes it very difficult for someone to address you when they
do not know who they should address. It may also hamper even getting a
response. My suggestion is to redue your sig line so that it includes
the advertising or promo material but also your name. I made a comment
to Sandra below in her response regarding reviews. There are a number
of requests in this issue and one reveiw response. Over the several
weeks that I have moderated there seems to be more requests than
responses. If you are sending them privately, that is acceptable,
however, you are not permitting a number of your colleagues the
privilege of learning from both the request and the response. Also,
don't feel bashful in taking on a review. Sometimes is it not the
professional response that is important but you as a representative
consumer. After all, it is the consumer's perception that interests us
most. I want to thank  Gene and DR for their testimonials. I'm sure
Bogdan will appreciate your kind words for the exceptional job he is
doing with the Digest but also his site. I believe this will be my
last issue this time around. Bogdan is scheduled back this week.

================ Site Reviews (1)=================

From:             Michael Bryant <stormkeep@yahoo.com>
Subject:          site review (StarBlanky)

Hello Adland subscribers,
This issues review is on The Web Wig's site "StarBaby"
I am going to divide this into several areas:

1. Load time: This is the amount of time it takes for your site to
load completely into a browser. The first time I loaded your site I
spent nearly a minute and a half waiting for it to load. However after
switching to other browsers I noticed the time was better. This has
nothing to do with your site. Your images are not outlandish in size
or so numerous as to pose this problem. The problem came from the
server. AOL's server. AOL, among other free hosts, cram so many people
on their servers that there is almost always a delay due to the server
being busy. I would suggest you get a Domain or a paid host, at the
very least. It will improve the speed and reliability, and thus your
sites uptime. Domains present a more proffessional appearance, in my
opinion. Look around you will see that there are some really good buys
available.

2. HTML : Starbaby has excellant HTML. Infact there are only two
things I could find and they were not really that important, but do
help in the area of making a professional design.
First, provide alternate text for your images. There are still
browsers out there that do crash, or surfers who surf without images
turned on. It speeds the loading of pages if you turn off graphics. So
I would suggest putting some alternate text in for your images if for
no other reason than to inform your visitor what the "should" be
seeing.
Second, setting WIDTH and HEIGHT attributes on IMG tags can improve
rendering performance on some browsers and prevent that "bouncing"
effect when images are being loaded. Nothing like trying to read a
sentence and have it "bounce" off in another direction because the
browser has begun loading the picture next to the sentence you were
reading. Not really that important but it is aggravating to the
surfer.

3. Meta tags: To put it simple, your site has no meta tags. Thunderweb
Promotions ( http://thunderweb.max-host.com/metatag.htm ) provides a
basic introduction to Meta tags and how they should be utilized. This
is only a basic introduction, but do cover the needed tags. Visit
competitor sites and check out their sites Meta tags (right click ,
view source) to get an idea of how they are used. Meta Tags are used
by search engines to index and rank sites in their databases.

4. Lastly I would like to cover the area of payments for services or
products. I noticed you provided the customer with a type of form to
fill out so they could print out the form afterwards and send it in
with a check or money order. I would like to suggest you consider
utilizing online checks, Check Pro( http://checkpro.com/ind.htm ) has
an excellant free service, or online credit cards, Internet billing
company ( http://ibill.com/ ) has another excellant free program.
Utilizing these can, and most likely will, increase your sales.
Especially since most buys on the internet are impulse buys.

I hope that I have been of help to you. Here's to your success and a
great New Year!

From:             "Sharon Evans" <sharon@npwt.net>

I would be glad to review sites for your readers.  My mission is to
help real world business convert to cyber business.  Your e-zine gives
great ideas for how to market etc and that is great for some one who
has time to spend the learning process and all that.  What I have
learned is that there are many big businesses out there that bought a
website and have not one idea how to tackle this and they will hire
people to do there plan and marketing for them from home.  Real world
business can't wait or waste time finding what works etc they want it
to work now today etc.  This is how I launched my business on the net.
Taking a real world business that has a website and launching them
into cyberland and they are now able to focus on what they do best and
leaves it to me to focus on what I do best!  I do not have a website
as I usually pick and choose my clients.  However  I do have e-mail
and would be glad to review a few sites!

Sharon

(moderator's note:  Hi Sharon,  It is great to recognize some names
from the beginning of Adlands Digest. I believe I speak for Bogdan,
but you can review any of the sites listed in this issue and you can
check some back issues in the archive. My recollection is that not all
requests are being fulfilled. For anyone else as well. You don't need
our permission to review, Bogdan does not have special reviewers. If
you feel competent to give a full review, great. If you have learned
one or two things that you did incorrectly and changes improved your
site, use these if they apply to any site requesting a review. Each
review need not be a complete comprehensive review. In the above
Michael gives a very thorough review, but don't let that intimidate
you in doing something less. For some beginners, everything helps,
even single tidbits. I'm sure they would appreciate it.)

Subject:          how useful are press releases?

I was thinking about using press releases to advertise my site
further, but wonder if they're worth the time and supposed hassle?
Anybody have any experience withbusing press releases to advertise
their website? I'm especially interested in comments from folks who
are running a homebased mailorder business and have used press
releases.

Tips for Internet Beginners and "Wanna-Be's"
by John Rickman

So, after all those late nights of "surfing" the web you've decided
there's a fortune to be made on the Internet and you want "your share
of the riches." I agree the World Wide Web (or Internet) is one of the
last financial frontiers where the "average" man or woman can compete
with big business or major corporations on a more level playing field.
But, (and it seems there always is a but!) having only recently
entered this arena myself I want to share with you some of the lessons
I've learned along the way.

1.  First and foremost beware of the "Get Rich Quick Claims." I want
to point out that the majority of people doing business on the
Internet are honest, helpful, trustworthy folks who are willing to
help and share information, tips, strategies, etc. either through
their websites, ezines (electronic newsletters), or e-mail
correspondence. Unfortunately there are people out there who want
nothing more than to part you with your money.so Beware!

2.  Learn all you can about marketing products, affiliate/reseller
programs (and the people/company offering them), hosting services,
promotion, etc. Visit other websites and see what they are doing that
is working. Copy their success (no, don't rip-off their ideas just use
them as a springboard to inspire you in your own creative thinking!).
In short, anything to do with getting your business started from site
construction through promotion you will want to know. You do not have
to become an expert in every facet but the more you know the better
off you'll be. On the Internet the saying "Knowledge is Power" has
never been truer.

3.  Stay within your budget/learn to manage you time. Resist the
temptation to spend, spend, and spend. In the beginning you should
concentrate on learning all that you can and not worry about buying
this or needing that because it's the first hosting service you came
across, the newest promotional software, the biggest, greatest, best
whatever that's come along. Do your homework and spend your money
wisely. Also, learn to manage your time. While in the beginning you
may not have 8 hours a day to devote to your business, try to free up
some time (the more the better) everyday. If you write down how you
spend your day you will be amazed how much "free" time you can find.

The biggest step in starting any business is the first one. So go
ahead, take the plunge. The Internet is large and getting bigger by
the day. It is here to stay and there is room for us all. It is my
sincere hope that the information I have shared with you will help in
that first important step. Good luck!
