"Leif Mogensen" <lemo@takas.lt> announcement in to-day's Digest was most
welcome and I look forward to it. There are so many variations, indeed
deviations on the SPAM question that there is need for a dedicated site
where the whole question can be monitored and debated on an on-going basis.

I recently have had a joust with a scamster who has made off with $6,000 he
charged to put up a one page Website with a few forms. To add insult to
ignominy this scamp tried to put me offline by entrapping me to reply to a
fraudulent offer to refund half of my $3,000 if I replied within 24 hours.
I did reply, to tell him $3,000 was of no interest. What did our scamster
do? He returned my 'reply' to my ISP marked 'known spamster'. There are
some very nasty operators out there. (Luckily, my IOL understood - they had
already seen some of this operators dirty tricks in action, so I'm still
'virtually alive.'

At the moment, we are putting finishing touches on a new website dedicated
to scams, spams and slant. What's slant, you asking? Well, you'll have to
wait until we're online and all will be revealed!

Good luck to everyone, and beware the spamsters, scamsters and gangsters!

NAME= Stringer
Spam is not that bad.I like to get mail.

Dear Mr Stringer and The Adland Digest
I also like to get mail + and I have nothing against some of the
socalled spamming letters.
The only thing is that I receive every day about  50Mb or mail , of
which the 25% is pure spam and useless for me.
50% is within my business , rest is different proposals , Ezines
etc.
I am making my living of the Net but try to consider about  other
kinds  of people also !!
Exporters , Importers who really are too busy to read all kind of
mail . When they make advertising in Usenet Groups , they receive
a lot of emails which for them is of absolutely of no interest and
use.
They simply has problems to work proper by reading their
mailboxes . Dont you think we owe ourselves to show respect both
ways . We who work on the internet we know that info about whats
going on is important and THIS IS OUR JOB  . If somebody was
making us troubles in our job  I think we would also protest !!
I agree fully about receiving a lot of mail , I just for my case have
had to establish  about 20 mailboxes for  having the possibility of
controlling it.
I do not want to make any problems for people who are sending
mail , even without permission to me , but if they are sending the
same email 100 times , its beginning to be irritating , also those
who grab the mistakes of newcomers , who do not make the bcc
secret , so a lot of people are getting and endles stream of useless
letters.
This should be controlled from ourselves , and I off course also is
hijacking theses email addresses , BUT I DONT just sent on further
in the chain.
The planned new service is for BOTH sides , MLM Network which
needs a lot of fresh leads and also a standard client  Exporter or
Importer.
By making this TheMailCheck.com we list good and bad ON BOTH
sides. All MLM and Network needs is the right to defend
themselves and not loose our ISP just because some angry or in
personal life unsatisfied person needs to have his or her image to
grow or worse is asking money for NOT reporting.
On the other hand We must also clean our own garden and be
Responsible. I personal  dont like the non producing mlm where
everybody just are sucking profit of future netizens without really
producing anything of any use for any society or group of people.
As Danish I am from child educated to respect everybody making
money on good jobs and good ideas , but also to disrespect people
who only are making money on the job of others , not really
producing anything or doing anything which are of any help for their
society.
Lets work together to make MLM and Network marketing a
respected and good job , so we again can have fresh leads without
being afraid of loosing our ISP.
I have no doubt that MLM and Network Marketing or in general The
Internet have changed the World and for Better by giving everybody
the possibility to buy cheaper and quicker find what they need.
BUT  it does not mean that we shall honour and look up to people
who only are "Taking" money out of the pockett of future netizens ,
or our pocketts without giving any REAL SERVICE or Product.
Sorry but this is my honest and strong opinion.

From: "Liz Scott" <loanlist@loanlist.com>
Subject: Our newest 4-letter word:  Spam

Hello Bogdan,

While I have been a subscriber to your excellent e-zine since (at least
close to) your beginning, this is the first time I have posted to the
group.  I'm compelled to do so now for two (2) reasons:

1)  To show my support for you - and this Group -  in your on-going "Heidi"
problems, and
2)  To obtain a critique from the Group regarding our Web site

With regard to "Heidi" problems, I could not agree more with a woman in
this Group (sorry, her name currently escapes me) who asked the question
recently (paraphrased): "Don't Cable TV subscribers PAY to receive TV
"Spam" in the form of commercials?"  The answer to her question is a
resounding "YES!"  But, the basics of this issue go much deeper than that.

As a veritable dinosaur, in business on the Net since 1994, it seems to me
that those who are most outspoken against unsolicited commercial email
claim that the main reason for their wrath is that having to deal with
unsolicited messages costs them money because they ostensibly stay online
longer than they would have to otherwise to delete, or otherwise deal with,
unsolicited email messages they receive.

So, let's look at other mediums that freely (and without ANY public outcry)
bombard ALL consumers with "unsolicited" ads:

1)  Cable Television Stations:  Indeed, those who pay for Cable TV service
are subjected to unsolicited advertisements every 10 minutes, or so, for
every product and/or service under the sun.  (I hope someone in this Group
will give credit to that Group member who first brought this up.  I cannot
find her posting.)

2)  Non-Cable Television Stations:  Considering that most of us pay for
electricity, TV ads cost us all money.  Unless one shuts off their
television EACH time a commercial comes on, and then turns it back on when
the commercial is over, one is, in effect, paying more on their electricity
bill for all those commercials.  If someone bought their TV with credit,
and is still paying for it, that individual's "cost" of commercials goes
way up.  I never heard of anyone turning on and off their TV in order to
avoid commercials - at the most, we might mute the sound until the content
programming is restored.  But, the cost of the electricity we pay to have
the TV continue to be on throughout so many commercials does add to our
monthly electric bill.  Miniscule amounts of money - yes.  But, not more or
less minuscule than Anti-Spam Fanatics' claims that unsolicited email is
"costing" them.

3)  Radio Stations:  The same issues apply with radio advertising as with
cable- and non-cable television advertising.  A radio plugged into an
electrical outlet costs the listener extra money to hear the unsolicited
advertising.

3)  Newspapers and Magazines:  People who subscribe to newspapers,
magazines, and/or other periodicals which include advertising do so to gain
access or information regarding the 'content' of that publication.
Virtually no one subscribes to a publication for its advertisements.  Yet,
those of us who shell out $10 - $50 per year for EACH of these printed
publications are subjected to hundreds of ads for products and/or services
that we neither asked for or want.  Can you imagine hundreds of thousands
of New York Times, Wall Street Journal, or People Magazine subscribers
suddenly claiming (or even filing a law suit!) that what they paid for was
the 'content' of those publications, and demanding that they receive all
future issues without any advertising, because reading that advertising
costs them money and/or time that they hadn't bargained for?

4)  U.S. Postal Service:  If you have a physical address in the United
States, you do receive postal junk mail.  While I do not have any
verifiable figures to back this up, we would probably all agree that the
U.S. Postal Service derives the majority of its net profits from postage
fees paid by bulk advertisers - not from postage collected on letters
addressed, "Dear Grandma..."  Bulk advertisers "Spam" U.S. residents
unmercifully, planting five to twenty, or more, unsolicited ads in each of
our mail boxes EVERY day.  Worse, there's no "targeting" about it.   The
fact that you happen to be a renter in your early 20's does not prevent you
from receiving unsolicited paper advertising regarding refinancing and
geriatric products.  Worse yet, this completely accepted advertising
practice needlessly depletes valuable national resources, such as trees.
It's amazing that the Anti-Spam Fanatics, who most certainly also receive
pounds of junk postal mail, are not screaming about this!

5)  Movie Theaters:  Been to the cinema lately?   At $7 to $10 per ticket,
you probably didn't expect to see TV-type commercials on the screen prior
to the movie you paid to see.  However, the theater probably wasn't being
picketed because of this practice, nor did you see anyone attempting to get
a refund for that portion of their ticket price that was consumed by an
unsolicited commercial.

6)  Cost of goods, services, and packaging:  It goes without saying that a
portion of every advertising dollar spent on a product, service, or the
packaging thereof, adds some amount of cost to the ultimate consumer.
Worldwide, people paying for products and services are also paying for
advertising those same things to other consumers who would never purchase
such goods or services.  Yet, as a people, we universally accept these
added costs as the norm.

Email advertising, bulk or otherwise, presents a problem not because it is
evil, or bogus, or costs money, but because it is a new concept that most
of us have yet to get used to.  It's not readily recognizable for what it
is - advertising, therefore it's not generally accepted as the norm.

It surprises and disappoints me that entities such as the U.S. Postal
Service, television and radio stations, and publishers nationwide have not
come marching forward to lobby for the rights of all to advertise products
and services through all mediums.  Afterall, if a relative handful of
Fanatics can restrict or remove the right to advertise via email, what's to
stop similar zealots from eliminating revenue-producing commercials, postal
junk mail, or even ads in printed publications?  You can be sure there'd be
serious lobbying going on in Washington were any of these revenue streams
threatened.

However, fair or not, SPAM has become this nation's newest
four-letter-word.  Those of us who wish to keep our ISP's and our good
business reputations will refrain from its use and continue to market our
goods and services responsibly.  I wince at the amount of trouble the likes
of "Heidi" have caused so many subscribers to this group when it seems that
everyone here goes out of their way to be responsible.  I wish you the best
with your "Heidi" problems, Bogdan, and continued success with Adland.

If anyone is still with me, I really would appreciate a critique of our
site at http://www.loanlist.com
In business online since 1994, we get 5000 to 6000 unique page hits per
month, yet are very low in sales of our service.  Everyone we've ever done
business with say we have a valuable, inexpensive service.  Still, our
sales are very low, and I would invite opinions as to why that might be
and/or how to solve the problem.
Thank you in advance for your comments,
Liz Scott

Leif,

Your ideas are wonderful.  I have never been shut down, but I have had
unfair complaints filed with my ISP.  It is very difficult to defend
yourself.  The anti-spammer seems to be able to harass without any fear of
reprisal.

Last year, I unintentionally added someone to my in-house mailing list.  I
sent him email.  Now this is a person that I have visited his site and
subscribed to his newsletter.  He had fits.  I apologized and removed him
from my list.  He was assured by my ISP that I have been with them for
several years, and that I was a responsible email user that had made an
error.  I had only one other complaint against me - EVER (and that was from
someone that forgot the signed up to get my mailings).  He wrote email
after
email to my ISP arguing to have me removed.  Of course, he cc'd me on
everyone.  It was a nightmare.  It was so bad that now when I call my ISP,
everyone knows me and say "your the one!" I guess it was a mixed blessing.
I get the best service from my ISP now because everyone knows me.

Good luck with your project.

Dear Adland's List Members:

Dale Clark's expressed disappointment with his Website's Sales
Results is a common plight of the majority of "Net-epreneurs".

In the beginning the mantra was "build it and they will come".
Then we assumed that people would just flock to our sites and
spend money. Yeah, Right. Welcome to the real world: It Sucks!

As opposed to having a physical business, the internet is a very
fluid and ever changing medium. It's still a new "toy", and even the
big guns are trying to figure out how to make money.

One of the main problems that I see is a matter of perception and
identity. We are complete strangers, briefly connected by no more
than a phone link. People have to get used to this toy as a
COMMERCIAL Medium. Remember how long it took for the ATM's?

We, as Net-Business People, understand that this may be the
most effective and convenient medium to conduct business. Your
future "customers" still don't agree completely. They still will have to
WANT to buy whatever your offer is.

It takes a while to create a "Web Persona". A domain name by
itself just doesn't cut it. You have to constantly keep your "identity"
out there, so people can get used to your "face". Anyone can get a
domain name and start a scam.  If it's done in the real world,
it's done on the Web.

Unless you are selling dollar bills at a discount, people won't buy
from you UNTIL they TRUST YOU and your Product.

There's no quick way to success in this business.

To help all of us deal with this problem; I have prepared a FREE
Webmaster's Net-Business Survey that will try to shed light in our
present situation.  Since your participation is completely
anonymous, there's no need for ego boosting here. Your can spill
the beans and nobody will know they are your's. The results will be
available in Real Time, so everybody can use them as a basis for
any future plans.

I extend my personal invitation to all Webmasters to participate.
We will all learn from this.

If you want to be notified when it's finally ready, send me a EMail
to: <raguilo@concentric.net> subject=SURVEY

It will be released within the next 2 weeks.

I'm trying to estimate acquisition costs per visitor/user for a
start-up website.

Clearly there's a big difference in costs between an entrant in
an established business with high barriers for users (I know
brokers look  at acquisition costs of around $100 per account)
and a new, highly compelling and free service (e.g. Hotmail -
I believe they got  to 12m on $500k, or 4 cents per user!). Any
insights appreciated.

From: Joe Reinbold <Jfreinbold@aol.com>
Subject:  FREE Resources to Improve Your Online
               Marketing Experience!
               by Joe Reinbold

When you are new to the Internet it is a never ending battle
to absorb the glut of information you need to make your online
experience a success. How can I promote my web site? How do I
register with the search engines? How do I set up my page? Is
my web site working right? How do I promote by email? How do
I make a banner? Do I have to pay for all these things?

All these questions fly in the face of the statement that all
you have to do is "Build Your Site and They Will Come"! Like
any other business, you HAVE TO work at it! Yes, the startup
expenses are considerably less than opening up a retail outlet
in your local strip mall or mailing 100's or 1000's of recruitment
packages by snail mail every month! If you are not a technical
minded individual familiar with the ins and outs of the Internet
world, you will have a pretty good learning curve. I went through
it and almost everyone I have been associated with on the web
did too!

The Internet is full of free resources that can help you both
learn the process and help you with some of your promotion. I
have kept track of some resources that have helped me and have
listed them below. One of the first hurdles a new online
marketer has to get over if he or she wants to jump right in
and get their feet wet is putting together their site. Of
course you can pay someone to design and maintain it, but that
can get expensive everytime you want to make a small change.
We make changes to our site every week, sometimes daily. So
I definitely recommend making an effort to learn a bit of HTML
in order to build and/or make changes to your own site. We
started out with a program called "Hot Dog" which we found
relatively simple since we didn't have an ounce of knowledge
about HTML. Now we are into FrontPage98 which seems to be even
simpler. You don't have to become an expert at HTML but the
basics will help.

There are a number of free resources online that can help you with
basic HTML, both of which give you some insight into what makes
your page work:
          - HTML Tutorials in Web Design
            http://www.bfree.on.ca/HTML/index.htm
          - HTML Help
            http://www.htmlhelp.com

There are free sights that can also help you check if your
HTML code and other operations of your site are working:

If you want to check or enhance the effectiveness of the Meta
Tags on your site, which you need to promote your site through
the search engines, these sites analyze your tags and make
suggestions for free:

Once your page or site is ready to go you want to get it
registered with the main search engines and submit it on
a regular basis. These sites offer free registration:
          - http://www.siteowner.com

Once you are registered you can check and see where you rank
on the search engines by going to:

Here are some sites where you can get free resources to enhance
your site and increase traffic:
     Build free banners:
          - http://www.quickbanner.com
     Free scripts:
          - http://www.infohiway.com/javascript/indexf.htm
Add a Free Post Card site and more:

And if you are looking for information on how to promote your
site or how to market online, visit these free sites for free
marketing information:

          - http://all-4-free.hypermart.net/tips.htm
          - http://www.uni-sol.com/window

These are just a few of the many free resource sites that
are available online, there are hundreds more. Having access
to the Internet is like having your local library at home.
There is no reason to invent the wheel, there are many good
writers online who share their experiences everyday with
millions of readers. That is why it is also a great idea to
subscribe to the many online newsletters (ezines) like this
one, so you can take advantage of those experiences. See you

===================S u c c e s s   S t o r y======================

From: Clair Sedore <927121@ican.net>
Subject: WELCOME TO THE INTERNET

My name is Clair Sedore. I am a 60 year old male who just had two heart
attacks in October, 1997. Other than finding out from my doctor how lucky I
was to survive (less than 30% survive the first heart attack), my whole
life changed as I was no longer employable, not that there were long
lineups previously. My entire career had been in retail, I was an
accomplished bookkeeper, and thank God knew how to type. I had never been
on a computer and knew absolutely nothing about them.
In February, as I was beginning to mend, a friend of ours gave us an old
Mac, complete with a printer, and I wrote a book on my 50 years of
theatregoing experiences, called "Give 'Em The Whole Razzle Dazzle (50
Years of Theatre and Footlights)." The book turned out to be some 258 pages
(with an extensive bibliography). I had been working on the book for over
three years, and of course a lifetime to collect the material. I wrote to
every publisher, but with no results, other than some very courteous
replies. If it had been a murder mystery, or a technical how-to book, I
probably would have had better results. So I printed a few copies myself,
thanks to my trusty computer.
In March, 1998, when I got my income tax refund, I bought a brand X
computer and got on the net, with unlimited time (courtesy of C.A.R.P).
There are some advantages to aging, although very few.
My whole world changed. I was completely self taught and learned how to do
html, but had great problems with imaging, and 90% of the time, in spite of
all the reading and research, and the downloading of just about everything
from Tucows, I would end up with a tiny square and three colour dots. But I
could create wonderful coloured pages and interesting text.
My next immediate problem was money, as I was living on Canada Pension, and
little else. I started working on websites, and at the moment have over 50
on the go.
The next step was getting advertising banners and links from various
reputable companies on the net, like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Art Today,
Big Star, CDnow, Magmall, Eads, Link Share, Web Position, Trellian, Pulsetv
,Download Mall, Gold Rush, Beyond Com, and Feature Presentations.
Needless to say I did not have the money to promote my sites properly, so I
used every free promotion site that I could find, not only the search
engines, but also the free for all types. I lived at sites like Add-It
Free, Submit Plus, Engenius-Add Url, Add Me, Add 4 Free, Submit-It,
Launch-it, and Submit Away.
I worked on the computer from early June,1998 until the present, from
approximately 5 in the morning, until 9 or 10 at night. It took me over 6
months of constant promotion to get to the point where my products were
beginning to sell. I will never be rich from this exercise, but now do have
some extra cash dribbling in.
On the net, one thing tends to lead to another, and my next series of
webpages were called "Make Money 4 Life," which started with one site and
ended up with four, on how to make top commissions with reputable companies
on the net. I had learned a lot from my experiences and wanted to give back
some of my findings to other new webmasters.
More time was now spent promoting these sites.
This was followed with the next logical step, a newsletter or ezine not on
making commissions, but on what I was an expert at, theatre. My first issue
was December, 1998, and with all my promotion, I have a subscription list
of just under 1000, and it continues to grow moment by moment. Each day I
am getting another 2-3 subscribers. I, of course, have listed my ezine with
probably 250 Ezine Lists, which include all-links, asphyxia, alco,
canlinks, catalog.com, canada.com, deterrnet, disobey.com, dominis.com,
ezine-news, etext.org, ezineadsource, ezinesearch, earthlink,
e.publications, foxcities.com, geocities.com, internetdatabase ,infobot
,inkpot, lockergnome, launchpad, list.city,  liszt, lifestylespub,

I also discovered Eudora Light, the great email programme, which helps me
send out my newsletters. Just yesterday I signed up with a great free
service,  WebSite PostOffice.com, to maintain my subscriber list and send
out my ezines.
In my 9 months on the web, the length of a pregnancy, I cannot believe the
wonderful things I have learned. I am now up to a 333 pentium system, with
sound, a printer and a scanner, which I have not figures out how to work. I
copy photos, but when I try to send them, not only does the recipient get
just html mombo jombo, but the computer freezes. At least I have a
challenge for 1999, and a wonderful group of computer friends I have met
along the way.
I cannot believe how very helpful and unselfish computer people are. I
have lived at Tucows, reviewed whatever I could, as I felt this was the
price I could afford, have helped other people in whatever way I could, as
long as it wasn't imaging. I have joined Shareware, owe a large debt of
gratitude to a particular website:
http://www.poorrichard.com/freeinfo/ezine.htm, for help, not only on the
ezines, but websites as well.
I subscribe to most of the ezines, and learn something from each of them. I
hope mine is as interesting to my readers as they are to me.
After all the hours I have spent on promotion, according to Visibility
Analyzer, I have reached No. 1 at Planet Search, Magellan and Infoseek; No.
2 at Planet Search, Excite, Web Crawler and Infoseek, No. 3 at Planet
Search, No. 4 at Planet Search and Infoseek, No. 5 at Planet Search, No. 6
at Planet Search, No. 8 at Infoseek and Planet Search, No. 9 at Alta Vista
and No. 10 at Infoseek. It is nice seeing your websites appearing in print.
My computer dictates what is next. One letter from an interested theatre
composer, led me to my new ezine called "Curtain Up," which gives job
postings for actors, musicians, playwrights, designers and technicians. There
is no charge for theatres ,television stations, or clubs to post notices,
but there is a 20.00 subscription fee for members (30.00 snail mail). The
first issue is scheduled for March 15th, but I already have a large number
of postings, so we may go to press earlier.
I do not know yet what my next step with be, other than learning how to
scan, but rest assured, the computer will dictate the next move. One thing
we can all be sure of, our computers have lives of their own, and we are
just along for the ride. But what an exciting ride it is.

Dear Friends, Toronto, Canada

Started teaching in 1957 at the age of 18, went on to work in public
relations for Canada Life Assurance (when I started with Canada Life in
1960, the computer took up a whole room, had to be climate controlled, and
dust free, and the reels or disks were probably  three feet in
diameter--things have certainly changed), Shell Oil and opened my own
freelance bookkeeping operation, specializing in Interior Design accounts,
followed by my own  retail interior design businesses in Toronto, Aurora
and Goderich. Retired, but not by choice, and now work harder on my
computer than I ever would have worked for anyone else, and for little
money, but more enjoyment than any job I have ever had.
