From: Chris Leilich <postmaster@businessbug.com>
Subject: Our newest 4-letter word:  Spam (response)

In response to Liz Scot's post in Adland Digest #66

The difference between the other advertising methods you mention (TV & Radio
Commercials, Newspapers & Mags, Junkmail, and  Cinema adverts) and spam is
the big issue that you are overlooking. If you really demanded your money
back
for the advertising you had to watch, read, sit through, etc. YOU would have
to pay THEM.

Advertising sponsorship makes these things CHEAPER. If they had to rely
entirely on ticket sales, most sportsmen/women would never have been able
to start their careers. Where would the Spice Girls be without Pepsi's
marketing
power? Without the regular postage paid for junkmail, would the post office
deliver to your mailbox every day? Would you be willing to buy your
newspaper
or cinema ticket at triple the price? How popular would popular music really
be
if the consumer would have to pay the full cost of making the records?

What makes spam unethical is that spammers do consume the same resources
without paying for them. That's why ISPs fight them off like the parasites
that they are. Having 1 spammer for every 100 ethical customers means that
the
spammer hogs half the ISP's resources, while paying the same as everyone
else does. And transferring email occupies the resources of a lot of ISPs.

That is all the points from Liz post answered except for the last one: "Is
it not the ultimate consumer who pays the advertising revenue?" Very true,
Liz. I totally agree to it. However the spammer pays next to nothing for his
direct-emailing campaign and that affords him
- either higher profits at the expense of the ISPs, who have to charge
everybody to finance the next upgrade of their resources,
- or lower prices for the buyers, which is an unfair advantage over those
who do sponsor their advertising vehicle(s).

To conclude, if we did not fight spam, spammers would drive the ethical
internet merchants into ruin. And the ISPs also. And then, no more internet.
In this
respect, you can call me a Patriot.

Hi Bogdan,

I have followed along with the spam onslaught you have dealt with.  And
did send a message to Heidi back in January.  But before I had read of
your situation I had created this commentary for my own ezine.

Just before my computer crashed Jan 4th I submitted it to Add Me and the
featured it.  On January the 17th I got my computer back and found over
1700 messages waiting for me.  Not all were responses to my com-
mentary but there were hundreds of responses.  Out of them were only
three negative people.  This should clarify how small a minority the
anti-spammers really are.  And how ridiculous it is that the world wide
internet is letting the tail wag the dog.

I am submitting this article to you for review as it has tremendous
bearing on what has happened to you and to so many others who are
operating a legitimate business.  If you would like to use it, you have
my advance agreement.

Please keep up the good work.  Our rights and freedoms in this brand new
cyberworld are at stake.

Best Wishes,

TOP Commentary

                               I     HATE    SPAM ! ! ! !

Now here's a statement that brings smiles to many and frowns
     to few.
     (Or so I've been told.)

But before I place myself on the chopping block I want to
     place a few
     facts on the table.

Spam, a unique type of meat and an even more unique form of
     advertising
has been my main course for over 4 years.  And  I would have
     to scratch
away several thousands of monthly earnings if it were not for
     the brave souls
that sling their spam messages into my email.

I, myself, am as cowardly as they are brave.     Because I
     don't have the guts to
chance losing my provider service simply to market my wares.
     The interruption
time would cost me too much money.

Yet there are those who bravely take a chance on total
     disconnect from the
internet and in some cases to actually be prosecuted in courts
     by their provider
service, just for the opportunity to send me an email
     concerning questions of my
desires or interest in their products or services

Well, as I've stated in past commentary, "I am a firm believer
     in free enterprise."
And I have little to say against these brave frontiers men and
     women who are
willing to fight the giants already trying to rule the
     internet.

It was spam that first got me to try making my own website
     using  my own free
web host.  Both found through spam email.

It was information found in spam that placed working tools in
     my hands to
promote my classified sites and produce my first income on the
     internet.

And it was spam that brought in an opportunity that now feeds
     me a growing
check that is soon to pass the $10,000 per month mark.

Spam can be an aggravation.  And it is possible for it to even
     cripple your
online service.  But in my experience spam has been nothing
     more (or less)
than a way for me to receive knowledge, ideologies and
     opportunities.

And it has given me insight to the mind workings of thousands
     of people and
hundreds of areas of the world that I would not have had an
     inkling of an idea
of how to obtain by any other means.

No!  I am not inviting junk mail.  I have no interest in the
     sexiest doll in Irucurbania
or the tilted lifestyle of Bogus Rumpus.

But way back when I was the newbie of newbies I did learn how
     to click and delete.
And I can do it in bunches in the same amount of time that I
     can do one.  So the
pain of spam is minimal compared to the riches of new ideas
     and new people I meet
     through the so called spammers.

My simple process of quick delete, save for later folder and
     read now has made
email reading a pleasure.  Because I never fail to find a new
     idea or a new friend
in the large mailings I receive.  And because I welcome all
     email I get the newest
of the new in what's happening on an everyday basis.

Yes, it looks awesome, even a bit overwhelming to see 1000,
     2000 or more emails
piled into my email box.  But after a quick view and delete
the number is down to half.
Second run puts them in view later folder and third run gets
     my immediate interest.
So I doubt I spend much more time reading email than someone
that gets 100 emails a day.
You just get use to looking for certain things in the subject
areas or certain return email address's.

So, before you go supporting the antispammers big boys, who
     don't want to compete
with spam because they can't control it or make money from it
     themselves by forcing you to
go through them.  You know of whom I speak.

The giants that are already segregating the internet
population into untouchable groups and categories
that can only be reached through their channels at their
enormous price.  Before you buy into their
propaganda and damn the average netter for trying to market
their wares ... just give spam a fair shake.

Not only are you helping the big boys to cut your throat by
eliminating your rights to market, but
you are rapidly helping them strip away the right to free
enterprise on the supposedly free internet.

In just a matter of a couple of years the bulging giants have
gained control of most of the effective
advertising avenues including the search engines.  Spam has
become the only method left to the
average netter that some giant foot hasn't already stomped and
molded into their own working payoff tool.

Just keep in mind that marketing on the net is no different
than out in the real world.  The independent
entrepreneur is still little more than the lamb among wolves.
And unless the lambs group together
and stay in bunches we will surely parish in their giant
     gnashing teeth.

I have been a member of your list for only a couple of months now, but find
it is filled with great ideas and links that have been very helpful to me.

I can sympathize with the issue of people who get some sort of vicarious
thrill from "reporting" you for "spam" when you never had any intention of
spamming.  I was recently reported to my ISP for spamming because I placed
an ad for a sales person in a newsgroup that didn't want my ad there.  Not
only did this person complain to my ISP, but also reported me to excite.com
which I was using an address from to try to track where I was getting
responses from!  Luckily, my ISP nor Excite even criticized me for placing
that one little ad!

Hi.

Just coming in on the tail end of this spam debate, I personally was
getting a bit "miffed" to say the least, at my naughty autoresponders.

I was recieving spam emails telling me they had left my domain & gone &
visited sites & signed up for newsletters/ezines etc.
(I will have to learn how to train them to stay put!!!)

Anyhow, I had a bit of a bitch about it in my own ezine, & KimSkinner of
KnDpublishing got back to me with this brillent article on anti-spam
resources.
If ya wanna read it:
mailto:anti-spam@paychecks-online.com?subject=adland

I appreciate that everyone is trying to earn a bob or 2 on the web, BUT
unlike the USA I pay thru the nose for local call access to the web,
average 16 cents per min. Paying to download crap really gets me annoyed.

I used to use the old ploy of replying to these messages with a counter
offer etc, but as the number of "user unknown" or inbox full messages
increased I realised this was costing me money both ways, so dont bother
doing that anymore.

I was once also accused by some stamp collectors of sending spam when I
announced the launch of my ezine via Onelist..crazy eh????

Suffice to say that as far as I'm  concerned, the only use I have for spam
is as a 2nd rate carp-bait.
Anyone recommend a good book on autoresponder training guides????

to have as many autoreponders as you like, with automatic follow-ups - you
choose how many, how far apart to send them, etc. and it's free!  Good luck

SMART AUTO RESPONDERS:  Last issue, Mike Holy asked about a good
autoresponder service.  We like the "smart" autoresponders from Get
Response.  You can set them for not only the initial reply, but for a
series of replies.  Use them creatively!  Hold a contest where one clue
is delivered each week.  Deliver your e-book, or a series of reports to
your paying customers.  That's working smart, not hard.   I'm sure
they'll help you.  See:

>Liz Scott

Liz, I took a look at your site and found it to be very attractive and
professional.  It's possible that you are not getting the right people
there, since you said you get a lot of visitors.

One thing you might try is placing ads on yahoo.com - they allow you to
place up to 10 ads at a time, and I saw one or two sections specifically
for Real Estate.  While that isn't really what you want to sell, it surely
is related.

I don't recall exactly where I got this tip, but in one of the many
newsletters I receive a woman gave a step by step plan to make sure your ad
stayed in the top of the section. There are so many ads placed on Yahoo,
they move down very quickly. She said to go in every 3rd day and delete all
the ads and then submit them again.  Best way to do that is to make a text
file of each ad and you just cut and paste it into the description area.
Try to come up with a catchy ad title or subject that will grab the readers
attention. And don't limit yourself to just Real Estate.  I placed ads for
my free monthly newsletter, Smoker's Revolt! in Announcements, Politics,
and Protests. I have gotten visitors from them after just 1 day.

You might also advertise your site with paper flyers around local realtors
and neighborhoods, or in a local paper - the more places you have your URL,
the more visitors you'll get.  I wish you great success!

Issue: High hits, low sales (why?)
Dear Liz:
The page, http://www.loanlist.com/loan_add.cfm where users enter credit
card numbers is not secure and this is a big reason for low sales. This page
states that "sales will be charged to credit card via secure server using
Secure
Socket Layer v3.0 and CyberCash. Your transactions are encrypted and are
processed by your bank." However, this page where the user enters the
credit card number is not HTTPS, only HTTP. In my opinion, it is not enough
protection for the consumer. This page should be secure.

From: Barbara Webbak  webmark@catskill.net
Subject: Site review http://www.loanlist.com

In Response to:

From: "Liz Scott" <loanlist@loanlist.com>
Subject: Request for Website Review

I have taken a look at your site and it appears to have all the
required elements of a good web page.  Since you are getting a
good number of unique visitors to your site....it appears the
problem is not in the meta tags, content (as far as search engine
placement goes), or general marketing efforts.  Since your problem
is not the usual design, layout, meta tag, etc type of dilemma; I
have decided to respond to the group, rather than you individually,
in order to address the issue of tracking....which is the next step in
effectively marketing your website (once all the other elements are
in place).

I don't know what type of statistical program you are using to track
your visitors ( there is a wide variety to choose from).  Which ever
program you are using you need to be able to use the information it
supplies and analyze where your trouble is.

Keep in mind that although you are getting 5,000 to 6,000 unique
visitors a month, if they are not qualified visitors that could very well
be your problem.  Using some of your keywords here is an
example.....Keyword = home

I could use this word to find sites about "home improvement, home
repair, stories about peoples homes, home work, just about
anything that contains the word home.  I may visit your site
specifically looking for one of these topics and not care anything
about finding suitable home mortgages or loans.  So even though I
show up as a "unique visitor" I am not a "qualified visitor". (By
qualified I mean someone who is likely to take advantage of your
service).  This could be a reason for low sales.  Keep in mind that
loan companies who advertise with you will want to know that can
offer them qualified hits....not just visitors.

Ok, so let's say that I am looking for a "home loan"....let's examine
the next possible problem....Price...

Is your price a fair price for the service your visitors will receive?
You will need to do some research and compare what others are
charging for the same type of service.  If you know the price is fair
then on to the next possibility.

Is the quality of service excellent and is the deal as good as I think
it is?

One problem I can see is there is no guarantee.  If you want to gain
the confidence of your visitors (especially the borrowers) you need
to offer a guarantee, testimonials, list of companies who have given
loans to your clients, or something that let's them know you are
reputable and that they are getting a great deal for their
money.

You offer a great deal and you've told them the benefits of your
service....but you're lacking proof that you can deliver the lenders.

On the Lender side.....why would they want to advertise when you
are giving them the list FREE?  If you want to profit from the
lenders I would offer them additional services for a fee.  i.e. For
$x.xx/ we'll email you updated listings weekly or some added
feature of value to them.

Another area you may want to evaluate is who you are offering the
free services to?  One of your benefits is offering lenders a free
service, however, you may want to consider if this is the best
option.  Perhaps there would be more to gain from offering the free
service to borrowers and charging the lenders.  Just something you
may want to consider.

Once your website is up and running "tracking" is critical to
determining how your online business is running.  It takes a lot of
analysis to determine where you could better spend your money
and your efforts.  You need to take it one step at a time....

IF you are using a tracking system make sure it is tracking all your
web pages, not just your home page.  This will help you determine
if visitors are actually visiting all your pages or just stopping by the
home page and then leaving.  You also want a tracking program
that determines what keywords your visitors are using to find you.
This can be especially helpful in determining if you are receiving
qualified visitors or not.  For example if a good number of your
visitors are using the keyword "home" and only stopping by your
home page and leaving, it's a good indication that you are not using
the right keyword or targeting the audience you want.  On the other
hand, if that's the word they are using and you are getting sales out
of it and not other keywords you may want to concentrate on that
word.

You should also have as a feature to your tracking program the
capability of determining what website has referred visitors to you.
This will help you decide which types of pages are the best for link
exchanges.

The list goes on for both features of a tracking program and what
steps to take to determine the effectiveness of your web efforts.
It's a process of elimination....Eventually, you will hit the problem(s)
and be able to correct them.

Hope this helps those of you who are getting hits but not sales.

I would like to start a thread of favorite lists and

Here's what I'm looking for:

a. lists that allow signature files. (moderated and

Only genuine lists that offer information on
advertising, marketing, promotion, that sort of
thing.

b. bulletin boards that permit links at the bottom

Don't endorse yours if you only have a few visitors.

Have only recently started joining lists so I can't
really help anyone on that. I avoided those since
they were prone to blatant ads and very little
useful information. Atleast that's what I thought.

Increase Response By 30 To 50%... Instantly!
By Thom Reece

Among the variety of techniques available to you as a marketer,
there is one that is virtually guaranteed to increase your
business... Testimonials! Testimonials are the single most
powerful marketing tool ever discovered.

To clearly understand why testimonials are so powerful we must
first look at the basic perceptions of our audience.

Here's how "John Q. Public" might describe his/her attitude:

[ "In addition to making me an enticing offer, you must prove
to me that you are okay to do business with. You must eliminate
any fear that I have about doing business with you. The basis of
my fear is *doubt* and *skepticism*... Two essential components
for survival in today's tough business marketplace.

I come by my fears honestly and from experience. I have been
conned before. I have been lied to before. The quality of
products and services that I have purchased in the past have not
always lived up to the claims made for them.

Hardly a day passes that the nation's press doesn't reveal some
major breach of ethics by business and political leaders.
Dishonesty and misrepresentation are commonplace. So why, in the
face of all this negative experience, should I believe your
advertising claims?" ]

These are sobering conditions in which to operate. It's easy to
understand why customers temper their buying decisions with
caution. They don't want to lose money and, more important, they
don't want to feel foolish. Eliminating this natural fear and
skepticism is the job that testimonials do best. The reason is
simple: If *you* say you are good, people ignore your
self-serving back-patting. When others say you are good, it's
credible. This goes to the very heart of why testimonials are so
powerful... They give us *credibility* and *believability*.

When you deliver a strong offer that is both credible and
believable, your sales and profits will increase.

Types of Testimonials

There are four major types of testimonials. They are:

*  Customer: By far the strongest category of testimonial is the
satisfied customer. In consumer offers a 30% increase in business
is not unusual, and business-to-business offers often double or
triple results through the use of good customer testimonials.

* Celebrities: Celebrities are not as believable as customers.
Their credibility suffers because they are paid. I may not like
the celebrity, which could negatively affect my attitude towards
your company or product. They generally increase awareness, but
it may not be good awareness.

* Experts: If you are selling artificial hearts, then a
testimonial from Dr. Denton Cooley would probably boost business.
Even though he might be paid, he is so credible that it would
probably work. Your expert must be an expert in a relevant field.

*  Expert Organizations: A trade association, a magazine in your
field, a chamber of commerce, a newsletter, etc. Expert
organizations carry a lot of weight because people believe that
their opinion cannot be bought.

What Makes a Good Customer Testimonial?

To maximize the selling power of testimonials, you should keep a
few tips in mind:

Tip #1: Be Specific

Testimonials phrased in specific terms pull more weight than more
general statements. For example:

"I increased my company's profits by $78,350 last year using your
advice!" is a lot more effective than "I enjoy working with your
company."

Tip #2: Cite Complete Attributions

"Mr. John Jones, President
Smith Manufacturing
Chicago, IL"

Instead of...

"J. Jones, Chicago."

[ The more complete the attribution the more believable the

Tip #3: Use Customer Terminology and Phrasing

Resist any temptation to rephrase your customers' words. You'll
generally lower the believability factor.

Tip #4: Use Photos of the Testimonial Writer

You will triple the believability and selling power if you print
a photo along with the words. Photographs of the person using
your product work best.

How To Collect Usable Testimonials

Collecting usable testimonials should be an organized and ongoing
marketing function. First, read the incoming mail carefully and
keep a file of customer comments. Follow-up on those with
potential and put them in usable form.

Second, analyze your customer list and develop a sub-list of your
top 10% of customers by sales volume and frequency of ordering.
Carefully craft a letter to this select list asking "for their help."
Suggest to them what you are looking for in the way of comments
and then let them provide you with the raw material. The important
lesson here: You can't sit casually back and hope for testimonials
to come your way -- you have to go out and get them.

The reward, however, is always worth the effort. The time you
spend nurturing your testimonial program will result in increased
sales and profits, an improved image, more sales leads, lower
sales costs, shortened selling cycles, and improved cash flow.
