First of all I dispute the statement that "90% of business is done
locally". 100% of my business is online, and I have several clients whose
business is predominately online. ( See http://www.rhymelines.com
http://www.tipsbooklets.com http://www.magnoliasandmoss.com as wildly
different, but successful, examples)

However, another one of my clients, a local telecommunications interconnect
company, (http://www.kisscomm.com) has a site that is primarily in support
of their local brick and mortar business. The goal of their site is to
provide an additional information resource to their customers. The intent
is not to necessarily get new customers from the web, but as a resource to
send their customers to rather than sending them a brochure. They put
their URL on all of their business cards, letter head, and it's included in
all of their off-line advertising.

In all of these cases, the site is "Integrated" into the business as a
whole. It can't be treated as a separate entity and promoted without
regard to the overall business and marketing plans. This is a critical
mistake I think many IRL businesses are making in relation to web site
promotion - they are so busy promoting their site (driving traffic) that
the forget that they need to promoting their business (driving customers).

All advertising is communication. In all other cases it is mostly a one
way medium that requires the customer to pick up the phone, fax, visit, or
write to respond. A web site and the Internet in general provides us with
the opportunity for interactive advertising where you can have an exchange
of information, build rapport, and develop relationships quickly and
easily. It can be used to extend your market, service existing clients,
test new products or services, the possibilities are limited only by our
imaginations (and pocketbook <g>).

>page description, or "Users Guide for Web Site Owners". In fact I'll
>write one myself, that is addressed to non-technical web site owners
>(not the hosting site managers)

IMHO it needs to be done from the very beginning as part of the design
process. Some business shouldn't expect their sites to be a source of new
business, but rather a way to extend their services in new way. I'm
writing a tips booklet entitled "### Tips For Getting Your Business Online"
(number of tips yet to be determined <g>) that will provide tips and a
guide for businesses starting online. To be notified when it is available
send a blank email to mailto:GYBO@tqm-online.com?subject=adland

>My reply, politely of course is "How many new clients has your fax
>machine generated in the same time? Neither are advertising platforms,
>but a means of enabling your customers to more easily contact you"

It all depends on their expectations doesn't it? How many designers lead
these people to believe that submission to search engines and directories
is all they have to do to promote their site? The goals and purpose of the
site should be discussed when during the pre-design process, but I think
most designers just want to take the money rather than be honest with the
client about their expectations.

Subject: Success with Ultimate Promotion and GoTo.Com

Greetings,

I am new to this list and would like to share some of the tips that are
paying off for my latest client's web site ( http://www.nation-search.com
People Locators). After completing the site a week ago, I registered with
Ultimate Promotion ( http://www.ultimatepromotion.com ) for $69. This is
the second time I've used UP (Ultimate Promotion) with quick results. My
current banners get about 1-2% click thru ratio. Out of 11,000 banner
impressions, that's only about 165 visitors, but I'll take visitors any way
I can get them. The more valuable service to me has been the 500 free for
all sites and the 900 search engine registration. To my surprise, once UP
submitted my site to the free for all sites, I found many links back to my
site in AltaVista. It's too early to tell, but I'm hoping these links were
also registered in HotBot and other search engines that factor popularity.

My big success story has been a result of advertising in GoTo.com. I had
reservations about paying for placement in a search engine, but it has paid
off with visitors in a big way. The secret is always in choosing your
keywords. I used their client services section to view their top 100
keywords and chose my keywords accordingly. In the last 4 1/2 days, I have
received 1,700 unique visitors from GoTo.com alone! And this is with low
bids (max: 0.05, most of my bids are 0.01). Spend some time choosing the
right keywords and it will pay off.

Respectfully,
Joe Johnston

Note from moderator.

I used both goto.com and ultimatepromotion and have to agree with you
that both were giving relatively good results.
Like with every advertising, you have to know where to advertise and
you can get very good results for little money.

I don't currently advertise Adland (except Goto) but traffic to my site
grows steadily . Yesterday I had 1,600 visitors from which
70 were from search engines, including goto where I pay for four keywords.

The secret is: create content and work with partners.
1,530 visitors came to Adland through links on other sites, and from
bookmarks (300) . I always ask to place link to my site when my free service
is used.
I never tried to optimize my pages in search engines but concentrated on
creating content and reasons for people to come back or
recommend my site. I'm not saying that my site is perfect as I know there is
many things which could be changed or added if I only had time.

Again to stress the fact, how important is where you buy your ads
I would like to give example of one of my advertisers who is getting
right now click-thru 6% for banners which you can see on the front page
of Adland http://www.adlandpro.com

Statistics for his banners can be seen here
http://www.adlandpro.com/BannerAdvStat.asp?rep=cash&days=10
His success is direct result of being in the right spot with the right
message.
This message fits profile of visitors to Adland, who look for affordable
promotion
and are interested in internet business.

Hi Bogdan,

I don't know if you will want to post this to the Adlands
Digest or not, since it could be construed by some to be
a "commercial advertisement", so if you choose not to,
then just consider this FYI. :)

I agreed with everything you said in your comments to
Endianto, except where you recommended he open a storefront
on Yahoo for $100.00/mo. with a maximum of only ten
products.

To my way of thinking, $100.00/mo. for a storefront with a
maximum of 10 products is EXCESSIVE! Most Adland subscribers
are on a tight budget and would not be able to afford that
price.

I can set up a website in Independence Mall
( http://www.independence-mall.com ) and install a database
driven shopping cart (no limit on the number of products)
with secure order form for only $100.00 setup and $25.00/mo.
(this software will also accomodate regular HTML pages, but
you can update the database directly from your web browser!)

The Independence Mall website is now averaging over 2100
Page Accesses per week (not "hits" which includes picture files,
etc.!)

If you would like to see a working example of the shopping
cart, go to: http://www.independence-mall.com/gifts_for_all

I hope you find this information helpful, and wish you
continued success with Adlands.

I'm a newbie to marketing on the net.

Who is making money on the net. I work about 5 to 6 hours a day either
on my website, doing the click thru thing, posting to opt in lists, and
doing free classified sites.

I've gotton little responses. I would like some imput. I'm changing my
web page again. This time I'm getting cousin who's a teenager to do
the graphics, because I don't know much html, i'm learning as I go.
But I think a theme for my page would be best.
If anyone could help that would be appreciated. But please look at the
whole thing, What kind of background is best?? where's the best place to
find free backgrounds,etc.

Is any one else finding that everything goes into phases on the net? or
is it just me. I'm finding what was hot two weeks ago, I hardly ever
see this week.
I just joined The Emerald Coast news, I thought great! Only need 3
people,to get the international magazine free every month. Everyone I
talk to to is on it. Who isn't??
If anyone can help me with suggestions on "free advertising that would
be sooo nice. I"m in real need of a mentor!!!!

From: Ray Brooks <actsnet@fsbdial.co.uk>
Subject: AN E-LETTER FROM BRITAIN.

Hi Bogdan,

AN E-LETTER FROM BRITAIN.

Finally I have plucked up enough courage to write to you at Adland. For some
time now (around 7-8 months), I have received the Adland Digest and have
read with great interest every issue that I have received.

I like the way it provides much needed help and advice to those new to Net
Marketing and I have found the intermittent articles on e-commerce and
website design and promotion helpful. However, like so many others, I find
all the technospeak most frustrating. Learning anything from base zero is
hard enough, but when one is presented with what looks to be a very
informative article only to be spoiled by the extensive use of net terms in
the form of abbreviations without explanations, it soon becomes very
'un-helpful' and 'un-informative'. This defeats the original objective of
the author and slows down the learning curve even more. I mean, what is
meant by 'CPM' and 'Click throughs', (yes I am a real Englishman borne and
bred thus do not spell 'through' as 'thru'), 'Affiliates' etc, etc, etc, the
list goes on and on does it not?

Why cant these supposed great net-writers and net-gurus' include a brief
definition of what the heck they are on about? For example: 'ISMT' (I Simply
Mean This). No one expects a full-length training course to be given in a
short article but surely a brief explanation would go a long way to helping
those new to web marketing and provide a much shorter learning curve. This
would allow them to become 'NT' (Net Savvy, or conversant with the Internet)
'FMQ' (Far More Quickly). I mean, not all of us have had the enormous
advantage of having studied business at Harvard or the London School of
Economics. By the way the United Kingdom does exist and we do have computers
that can be connected to the Internet and the WWW (World Wide Web) and we do
have companies that do business over these hallowed portals. Knowing that a
business has a website is ok, but knowing in which country a '. com' company
is based without first having to trek all the way to their website would be
of enormous help to us here in 'Britain', or indeed any country, including
America.

So often your contributors talk of 'net-etiquette' and seldom live up to
their required expectations. To us in 'ye goode olde lande of Britannia',
(Ye olde English spelling for 'the good old land of Britain'), we know a
thing or two million about etiquette, after all we have been using it for
more than two thousand years. I realise of course that the world did not
have computers in either Caesar's, Plato's, or Shakespeare's times, and that
modern day technology brings with it new forms of etiquette. However, some
Americans etc, may be surprised to learn that in Britain (United Kingdom) we
also have Televisions, Computers, Radios, Newspapers, Telephones, Land
Postage and Camera's. We should have these as Brit's INVENTED them all. What
a surprise, even the humble computer was originally invented by a Brit.
How's that for blowing my own country's trumpet?

Enough ramblings about the British and back to net basics. I represent a
new-ish company located in the old Shire county of Bedfordshire, England. We
call ourselves ActsNet (not to be confused with the American Churches
Technology Network (who is at http://www.actsnet.com). I have even given
them a mention with hyperlink so they know we carry no ill feelings. We
however are at http://www.actsnet.co.uk. ActsNet provides online listings of
professional entertainers and non-performance professionals based both in
the UK and worldwide in order that they may promote themselves over the
Internet for free, irrespective of whether they are connected to it. In this
we are trying to set a precedence. We are NOT an Entertainments agency. We
do not charge a commission to any listed act or non-performance
professional.

In order to maintain our website and promote its use, we are seeking to
offer paid advertising to businesses and organisations who are either
connected to the professional entertainment industry, or who see as we do
the enormous potential of targeting those who seek to hire entertainers and
non-performance professionals. Performance entertainment crosses all
socio-economic boundaries. It is a universal language in its own right. Thus
businesses are able to compliment their existing advertising campaigns by
targeting all types of people from all walks of life, and from within a
highly used sector.

For myself and on behalf of all my coleques at ActsNet, we know that we may
yet have a long way to go in producing a great and attractive website. I
would be grateful therefore for any comments about our website. As former
and working entertainers ourselves we are not unused to hard criticism. Any
report will be looked upon as being constructive no matter how harshly
critical they may seem to you. Please feel free to offer the same invitation
to all Adland subscribers.

Whilst I understand that your time must be very short indeed. The inclusion
and short explanation of a net-commerce or website promotion term in each
issue would be a valuable addition. This would be of enormous help to us all
in the UK. It would also save time and the additional cost of having to trek
to the website, as we do not get free local calls here. The alternative is
to thumb through stacks of printed material in search of a definition.

Last, but not least. Please accept my apologies for such a long message and
my sincere thanks for each issue of your Digest. I also offer my very best
wishes for its continued growth. Please keep it coming and thanks for those
new tips in each issue.

With kindest regards,

From: Debbie Ducker <m_dducker@centuryinter.net>

Subject:Advertising Free or Paid Is Only As Efficient As The People Behind
It!

So you have promoted your site's URL to 100's of free sites and many
paid ones... You check your tracking system, only to find a
disappointing amount of hits to your site. What's wrong you say?

Well if you have a tracking system that lets you see where and what
sites your hits are coming from, you may be surprised at the details.
You will likely find that you are not getting any hits from many of the
sites you submitted to. Advertising free or paid is only as efficient
as the people behind the advertising site. If they are not promoting
their site, thus not getting hits either, then it only stands to reason
that you are not going to get any results from that site.

Here are some things to consider before you put out hard earned money on
an advertisement and your valuable time on free submissions. Go to the
search engines and see if that site comes up on a common keyword
pertaining to it (although do not end your hope with this site based
only on this, there are many factors involved and this is only one of
them). How do they get hits to their own site? Do you see banner
advertisements, classifieds, etc. for them? How did you find them?
Check out their site and see if it is easily navigated, do they have
search? is there categories? have they made it easy for people to find
sites based on certain topics/subjects? Maybe you put your site in,
found it, but a few weeks later you do not turn up? Find out how long
they keep ads and/or submissions, how often you need to resubmit if at
all, etc.

Here are two great examples of advertising worth your time and money,
there is one classified site that I use Kingdom Classifieds -
http://www.interking.com, when you place your ad it is given an http://
address and you are able to promote it to the search engines just like a
web site, right from your classified account at Kingdom with one click.
I get amazing traffic from this classifieds site, thus making it worth
the very small fee you have to pay. Another example is a paid submission
service, for FFA's and Search Engines, I use called Silver Services -
http://web4.superb.net/silver/index.shtml. Here for a small monthly fee
you get unlimited submission access to 400 + FFA's and 60 + Search
Engines and Directories. This site is different. You submit your ad
yourself by filling out the form one time and then simply submitting to
each with one click on a button per site. It does take a little time
but the results are amazing. You can verify each site yourself and not
depend on someone else. I am not saying the services that do
submissions for you are bad either because I have had good results with
a few of them also. But this is just to show you that you can find
places to advertise that are worth your time, money and effort. It just
takes a little research and time.

These same principals and questions apply if you have or run an
advertising site, especially if you are charging for it. Are you giving
your customers everything possible for their money? Can people find
you easy in the search engines? Make sure that you optimize your ad
pages where possible, to get good rankings in the search engines, by
using useful keywords in the HTML coding (meta tags, image alternate
tags, description, etc.) page title and content. If this is not
possible at least advertise the site to as many useful places as
possible, make sure you are doing all you can to get traffic to the
site. Are you advertising your site on a regular basis and trying to
get as much traffic as possible? Also encourage your visitors to view
the ads as well as place them. After all without your advertisers you
wouldn't have much of a advertising site would you?

Wishing you all the best with your online business marketing. For many
free and unique places to advertise your business online visit the
online marketing resources of our site at:
