  Banner Comparison: Size Does Matter
+--------------------------------------+

This month we tested 6 banners (5000 impressions each)
to see what their CTRs would be.

But the ONLY variable was the banner's size in bytes.
Visually, the 6 banners look the same. Can you guess
which one got the most clicks and which one got the
least clicks?

  http://www.whitepalm.com/fourcorners/BT009_banners.shtml

Of those 6, the best CTR is over 2x the worst CTR.

Once you've had a look and made your guess, check out
the actual stats:

  http://www.whitepalm.com/fourcorners/BT009_answers.shtml

Even though they look the same, each has had a different
noise pattern added to the background to artificially
inflate the number of bytes. Here are the sizes and CTRs:

  #1  2477 btyes, CTR = 2.60%
  #2  5161 bytes, CTR = 2.32%
  #3  6630 bytes, CTR = 1.35%
  #4  7422 bytes, CTR = 1.29%
  #5  9742 bytes, CTR = 1.18%
  #6 10149 bytes, CTR = 1.12%

Isn't that amazing? You can increase your CTR by a factor
of 2.3x if you can reduce it's size from 10K to 2.5K.
Clearly, the reason is because banners with more bytes
take longer to load. If someone never sees your slow-
loading banner, then they'll never have a chance to
click on it.

This strong argument for reduced-byte banners can be
summed up in this equation:

  CTR = 3.06 - 0.21K    (R-squared is 0.84)

Which says that for a banner of this visual design, the
CTR is 3.06% minus 0.21% for every 1000 bytes in the banner.
The actual data is plotted on a graph here:

  http://www.whitepalm.com/fourcorners/sizematters.shtml

Remember, just because YOU have a fast net connection at
work (or wherever you design your banners), most of the
world does not. If you want to increase your CTR, leave
the byte-increasing elements off the banner. This is
especially true for dithering, which doesn't compress
well in GIFs.

This "market research" thing is a pain, and is something I`ve seen few
articles about. One method I tried - not too successful to date - was to
conduct a survey. I used FLASHBASE ( http://www.flashbase.com ) which
allows
you to develop a survey that  ask a series of questions. In my case, I gave
a brief synopsis of video tapes I would consider making if there was enough
interest in an idea. I also requested an e-mail address so that IF the tape
ever got made. I could notify them.

Plus, the survey has a facility to send people to my hope page once the
form
has been submitted. So I can canvas people`s opinions, and at the same time
generate traffic to my site! ( http://www.flashbase.com/forms/video_data )

I also did a similar "crafty" survey re Who Will Win The F.A.Cup --- which
directed people to a gambling syndicate I was promoting. In this case, the
survey was valueless, but was used as a promotional gimmick

Subject: Integrated Marketing

Hi everybody,

Looking at changing shape of the internet today  while visiting
different sites, I'm thinking that many people are getting somewhat
wrong impression, what internet can do for them and how they can
take advantage of it.

Many sites I visit  (this is due to Adland Classifieds) are
poor attempt to generate  any business.
Desire to make quick buck, seems to be so big for many,  that
they forgot about actual purpose of their presence on the internet.

But internet is not different from business prospective than any other
area  in terms of how you get  people to buy your product or service.
In fact it might be even harder as there is no  personal  contact between
buyers and sellers.

I'm convinced  that those who put their time in learning and developing of
their own business, will earn benefits at some point. Those who try to get
involved in different (hard to believe) "ideas"  will never see anything back
and  will just waste their time   as Ralph Seward  was saying in
his post to Digest #72

>If they think that they
>are going to 'get something for nothing' they will discover, all too
>soon, that they have received 'nothing for something', i.e. their
>hard-earned money.

Knowledge is the king and if you can convince others that you posses it
and know how to take advantage of it ,  people will come to you for advice
and will pay for it. But if four elements below are not satisfied, best
knowledge is lost in cyberspace.

1.)Site has to be designed professionally.
This single element will make people  think for a second about  the site
and make them  curios to read information on some pages and click some
links.

2.) Access to site  is fast.
Tones of banners on the page  or cute useless Java splash screens only slow down
the download.
If I have to wait  more than 20 seconds for page to show up I'm gone  and I
probably never will come again.

3.)Unique domain name .
For $30.00 US per year site looks like somebody is serious about it.
I always spend extra time on sites  which have their own unique name.
This makes me think that site owner is  serious about his/her business,
and site will be there tomorrow when I come to see some more pages or link
to it.

4.) Promote it

There is  lots of materials regarding
this and other marketing concept in Adland Digest archives
http://www.softfornet.com/archives.

Subject: Review of "Leann Estes" website

This is in reply to posting from:

"Leann Estes" <bet@yell.com>
Subject: Website Promotion

Leann,

Successful websites nowadays are leaning towards providing quality content
to their visitors, not just 'opportunities' or links to 'programs'. Sites
providing readable content is the number one reason people visit a site repeatedly!
Articles, which abound on the internet, and free reports provided either via
autoresponder or uploaded to your site are one way of getting visitors.
Also you did not mention how you are promoting your site, are you placing
ads in the classifieds? Are you using ezines as a way to advertise (the
number
one way!)? Are you submitting to search engines? One of my favorite
sites on promoting is http://www.virtualpromote.com   Here you can find
many ways to promote your site including the Big Search Engines.
Also for articles you may place on your site for content you may go to:
http://www.e-zinez.com/gallery/index.html   This is another one of my fav
sites for picking up information articles to either use in my ezine or
post on my site for my visitors to read and inform themselves. The idea is
to give something to your visitors that they can learn from and make sure
you update your site regularly.

Getting your own domain is a great step towards getting noticed.
It is much more professional to have one's own domain name and people tend
to take it more seriously than a site from one's ISP for example.
Remember that promoting ones site is a never-ending job, you must
constantly promote, promote, promote, through ads, ezines, discussion list,
optin email lists, bulletin boards and search engines.
I have some free e-books on my site you are welcome to download for free
that may help you in promoting and designing your site. You can look them
over at:  http://www.bizgold.com/library.htm

Hope this advice will guide you some in the right direction!

Subject: FFA Blaster from SubmitAd.com absolute dissappointment

There's nothin more comforting to see that there are people out there
that are in the same situation as I am.

I am a newbie to internet marketing and have found your logo absolutely
valuable as well as your monthly digest extremely valuable.  I just
started learning internet marketing about a couple of months ago after
learning that people are actually making a living out of the internet.

Just like everyone else  struggle day after day learning the curves of
how to market associate programs and mlm and so forth. That's why I
bought a software called FFA Blaster from SubmitAd.com.  So far this
program has been an absolute dissappointment.  I have been trying to
warn people about the software or at least get the word out that this
program is NOT worth $90 US that I paid for.

Anyway, I am providing a free service to fellow newbie networkers where
I can blast their ad ( to promote their mlm's or associate programs,
business or services) for free, no string attach whatsoever.   All they
have to do is visit my site (which in need of desperate repair) and
enter their email address at the bottom of the page and submit it.
Then they will receive an autoresponder message, where they have to send
it back with all their informations ( like, the title of ad, url and
email address etc.)

If you know of anyone that could use this kind of service, I would
really appeciate it if you could let them know.

Thank you for your time.

Dear Bogdan,
This is about building your newsletter base of subscribers.
This is not a new approach, but it works!
I have had a hard time starting off my site newsletter, although I work hard to keep it
interesting, and I post copies of it at the site (as you can see, it is new) the membership
to it was very low, despite hitting an average of 350 page views per day recently.
It has now taken off! I am getting a lot of new members added every day!
HOW?
I am giving a FREE GIFT with every sign-up.
To see it in action go to
http://meeting-place.8m.com/news.htm

You sign up for the newsletter, and when you receive the confirmation e-mail, you get the URL to get your FREE downloadable gift!
The best part is, it is a small download, takes about 3 minutes with a 28.8 connection, and IT IS FULLY CUSTOMIZED to my site - The Meeting-Place - Where Adults Meet
http://meeting-place.8m.com

AND it's a fun little program!

HAPPY SELLING!

LEARNING ALL THE TRICKS OF NETWORK MARKETING

After taking the last week off and working with
a number of people in my downlines, I have been
dumbstruck at the lack of knowledge out there.
People are struggling to grasp the whole concept
of Network Marketing and when they do not succeed
in the first month or so, they drop out, and jump
to another program.

One of the worst perceptions is that they can just
sit back and the system or their upline will do the
work for them.

A lot of people in our downlines do not realize that
to be successful they really will have to work at it.
It does not have to take a lot of time, but it does
have to take some of their time if they want to be
successful.

As sponsors we need to do everything we can to get
this message across to our downlines. As sponsors
we must learn to help our downlines and be there
for them at all times. These people are trusting us
to help them. If your not an experienced person in
network marketing, then you need to get help. There are
many places on the internet where information is available
that will help you and your downline.

They will need constant encouragement, new advertising ideas,
methods on how to advertise effectively and methods on how to
reach other people who may be interested in their program.

Even something as simple as blind copy when sending to a list
needs to be taught. I have been horrified at the number of
people who do not blind copy. Something so basic.

We have people who sign up for our programs and then never
read the information they are given. I have had people who
join and pay and then sit there and do nothing.

In order to be effective we must learn everything we
can about Network Marketing. You can't support a downline
if you do not have the knowledge yourself.

I have been in Network Marketing for 2 years now. Even I
still have things to learn. One of the things I did recently
was to join the Warriors Site. I learned things like:

Effective Email Marketing (I am getting very good at this)
How To Write Headlines (You only have seconds to get their attention)
Ezine Advertising How to Break Even and Still Make Money
Signature Power - 50,000 Eyes See Your Ad
How to Attract 1,000's of Prospects to Your Site
How to Make Affiliate Programs Work For You

They have a FORUM where you can talk with other Network
Marketing people. Exchange ideas and make contacts.

There are 100's of Free Reports there for you to utilize
and learn.

There is so much at this site it is unbelievable. YES it
does cost money to join. A one time fee. But I guarantee
that what you learn there will help you to recruit people.
It will help you support your downline.

Imagine being able to pass on all of these ideas to your downline.
Help them to become effective marketers and they will
BUILD YOUR BUSINESS FOR YOU.

Even an old Dog can learn new tricks. I was amazed at what I
learned from this site that I had never thought of on my own.

The Internet market place is changing drastically every month.
New things and new ideas are going to be constantly needed if
you are going to make money in this business.

So, not only does my downline need to learn, it appears that
I do also. And I will pass all I know onto them, so that they
may become successful. With their success, comes mine.

==================G u e s t  A r t i c l e (2) ===================

From: Joseph Jobst <joseph@linz1.net>

The Web is not WYSIWYG.

1) It's frustrating but true.
The Web is not What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get. Well, actually,
that's not exactly true. What you see is what you get, of course.
The problem arises when you mistakenly assume that what you see
is what everyone else gets. The key thing to remember here is
that there are millions of Websurfers out there who don't use
YOUR favorite browser, your video card, your screen settings, or
even the same kind of computer as you.

2) HTML is a structural markup language,
   not a page-description language.
When you write HTML, you are defining the structure of a document,
not specifying its layout. Yes, HTML does include some basic
formatting and alignment tags.
But it's very easy to misunderstand and misuse these tags.
You heard right -- it's possible to misuse HTML tags. In HTML,
there are actually rules for what tags are okay, and where they
are okay. There are even tools available to check your pages to
see if they follow these basic rules of HTML.

3) Web authoring is not word-processing.
When you create a word-processing document, you can exercise
precise typographical control over some or all of a printed page.
Defining the structure of a Web page is a much less predictable
process.
Get over the urge to control every little formatting feature of
your Web pages. The surest way to create a Web page that looks
good to all your readers is to trust that your readers' browser
will render your page the best it can, if not exactly the way
you'd like.

4) Not everyone browses graphically.
Graphics are a great way to spice up a Web page. But there
are at least a million people in the world who, whether of
necessity or by choice, don't browse graphically. That's a lot
of readers.
Build pages that convey their message and navigate easily, even
without graphics.

5) Most "cool tricks" aren't really all that cool.
When you're new to the WWW, pages that automatically load
other pages seem almost magical. But most of the cool stuff
you're encountering for the first time has actually been around
for quite a while. It's been done already.
Truth be told, it's been done to death.

6) Gear-driven Web pages get very old, very fast.
The Web is like a high-tech toy store. Everyday, someone
comes up with some cool new toy that's the absolute latest in
smell-o-matic-blur-o-vision technology. And like all good toys,
these new techno-gadgets are undeniably fun to play with.

Here's the problem: twenty bazillion other people are also
rushing to employ this latest breakthrough in trendy technology.
And after you've seen 10,000 smell-o-matic-blur-o-vision pages,
it's hard to get excited about seeing number 10,001.

7) Original content is the key to a good Web page.
Presentation is an undeniably important element of good Web
design. But more folks use the Web as information source than
as an entertainment source.

By implication, there is simply no substitute for good content on
a Website. Individuals and organizations alike can make a unique
contribution to the World Wide Web. Simply share what you know
and think about the things that interest you.

It doesn't really matter whether it's needlepoint, or motorcycle
engines, or landscape architecture, or stupid Unix tricks. After
all, you think it's interesting, so it's a good bet that there's
other folks who think so, too. Building a good set of Web pages
means putting some of yourself into your Webspace.

8) Don't use reports of your browser's popularity as an excuse
for invalid, exclusionary, non-HTML markup tags.
Statements like "97% of all people use Netscape or MSIE" are:

- statistically suspect and verifiably untrue
- irrelevant

There's actually a fairly complex set of statistical reasons why
these reports are inherently suspect and statistically invalid.
But you don't have to be a statistician to understand that if you
build a page that only works in, say, MSIE, pretty soon, all the
people who come to your Web page use MSIE! (Surprise!)
The reason it's irrelevant is that there are literally dozens of
versions of these two programs floating around out there. Thus,
the terms "Netscape" and "MSIE" actually refer to dozens of
different feature sets, quirks, etc.

Web clients are unpredictable, idiosyncratic, and buggy.
Structuring your pages to accommodate or exploit browser quirks
is a fairly spectacular example of letting the tail wag the dog.
(It's also a great way to build a very high-maintenance Website.)

9) Fast-loading pages make for happy Websurfers.
Most folks' biggest beef about the Web is piggish,
slow-loading pages. Fast-loading pages make for more
(and happier!) visitors to your Website.
The key to building fast-loading pages is simple:

* Send less data.
There are two key elements to building fast-loading pages.
One is to build relatively small pages, and then use hyperlinks
to connect these smaller pages into a larger Website. The other
key is to reduce the size of your graphics files; it's really
fairly easy to do, and your visitors will love you for it.
  Honest.

10) Watch your step
Web design is undeniably fun and exciting.
As your Webspinning skills evolve, you'll probably find yourself
interested in exploring new avenues for your technical and
creative talents.

As you explore, it's important to bear in mind that "the Web" is
actually dozens of different technologies under a single name. All
of these technologies are still very young, and many are still
fairly unstable. Some are even downright dangerous.

Proceed cautiously, and realize that a lot of uncertainty still
exists about almost everything Web. In fact, about the only thing
you can be sure of is: you'll never be bored.
